The Quatuor features a ring modulator, a sample-and-hold circuit, white noise and an internal sequencer. You can create all kinds of sound effects and powerful bass lines; it’s ideal for the Berlin School, for example.
2. NRsynth Quatuor: 3 famous sounds
Here are a few famous songs played live on the NRsynth Quatuor with my friend Jean-Luc Briançon (aka Kurtz Mindfields):
Jump (Van Halen, 1983)
Cyclone (Tangerine Dream, 1978)
Chants magnétiques 1 (Jean-Michel Jarre, 1981) Quatuor (main sequence) , Retro-one (Bass), Pro-800 (strings).
3. NRsynth Quatuor famous songs
White Eagle: A great example of how to use the dual arpeggiator to play this magnificent classic track composed by Johannes Schmoelling and Chris Franke (Tangerine Dream) in 1982.
Stranger Things: The original sequence was played on an Oberheim Two Voices (by hand, apparently). Here, it’s the Quatuor’s sequencer!
"Echoes from the golden age of electronic music — reborn with one of the most versatile modern synths! "Berlin Legacy" is a deeply evocative collection of 40 exclusive performances crafted specifically for the Korg multi/poly. This soundset channels the hypnotic spirit of the Berlin School — pulsating sequences that drive like unstoppable rhythms of time, soaring leads that pierce the atmosphere, and vast, breathing pads that fill the sonic horizon with analog warmth and digital precision!
Drawing inspiration from the pioneering works of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, these performances harness the Multi/poly's four-layer architecture, rich analog-modeled filters, powerful modulation matrix, and motion sequencing to deliver authentic retro-futurism with contemporary depth and playability.
A key advantage of this library: many sequences are designed as multi/split performances — the left hand triggers evolving, rhythmic sequences (classic Berlin-style arpeggios, driving basslines, or layered patterns), while the right hand plays expressive leads, melodic lines, or lush pads. This split/layer approach turns the multi/poly into a true performance powerhouse: one patch, two hands, infinite cosmic journeys.
All performances are heavily modulated — modulation wheel, velocity, 4 modulation knobs, and real-time controls add dynamic movement and expressiveness. From hypnotic, sequencer-driven grooves to ethereal, drifting soundscapes and cutting, melodic solos, "Berlin Legacy" bridges vintage analog soul with the Multi/poly's modern hybrid engine!
"Sometimes the best ideas appear when the mind slows down and distractions fade away.
This one-hour analog synth session was recorded live in the studio using hardware synthesizers and slowly evolving sequences — a quiet space for thinking, working, reading, or simply drifting for a while.
Inspired by the spirit of classic analog pioneers like Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, and Jean-Michel Jarre — composed live in one take using hardware synthesizers, no timeline, just performance.
Let the sound move gently in the background while thoughts begin to organize themselves.
Best used for:
• deep focus
• coding or writing
• studying
• late night thinking
• quiet creative work

OB-Xf is a continuation and modernization of the last open source version of OB-Xd by 2DaT and later discoDSP, bringing together several efforts going on in the audio space and combining them inside the Surge Synth Team infrastructure.
It is an amazing freely downloadable virtual synthesizer inspired by the venerable Oberheim OB-X.
The original Oberheim OB-X is one of the best analog poly-synths ever, used by Rush, Van Halen, Queen, Japan, Eurythmics, Ultravox, Tangerine Dream and many others.
It is a classic synthesizer with a timeless sound that continues to captivate musicians and producers alike. With its rich, full-bodied tones and expansive sound design capabilities, the OB-Xf is the perfect choice for those looking to add a vintage touch to their music.
The OB-Xf is a synthesizer that has been designed to recreate the sound and behavior of the Oberheim OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8. However, the architecture of the original instruments was limited in some ways, so the OB-Xf includes a number of additional or altered features. Overall, the OB-Xf has been designed to produce a sound that is as good and as rich as the original OB-X.
Also, like many synths of the OB-X's generation, the OB-Xf has no internal effects so its sounds and textures can be greatly enhanced by the use of additional processing like chorus, reverb, delay, etc.
In this demo I will just let you hear what some amazing sound designers have made for this stunning synth simply by scrolling and playing some beautiful presets.
No additional effects or outboard processing here. What you listen is what you get!

Press release follows:
Cherry Audio has announced SH-MAX, an innovative software synthesizer that integrates three legendary SH-series synths from the '70s: the SH-5, SH-7, and SH-3A.
Cherry Audio has announced the launch of SH-MAX, an innovative software synthesizer that integrates three legendary SH-series synthesizers from the 1970s: the SH-5, SH-7, and SH-3A. SH-MAX captures the bold sound of the SH-5 while incorporating features and aesthetics from the other models, enhancing the original designs with greater power, versatility, and essential tools for modern music production. Musicians and vintage synth enthusiasts can start using SH-MAX today for the incredibly low price of just $59, available at cherryaudio.com and authorized resellers worldwide.
SH-MAX faithfully recreates the vibrant tones and workflow of the original SH hardware. It features powerful dual oscillators, two LFOs and ADSR envelopes, the dual-parallel multimode and bandpass filter sections, and the five-channel mixer of the SH-5 (1976), plus a ring modulator and sample/hold capability. Also included are autobend, duophony, filter FM, and the syncable VCOs with additional waveforms found in the SH-7 (1978). The extra additive-style oscillator from the SH-3A (1975) further enhances sound design flexibility. Moreover, SH-MAX incorporates and expands upon the expressive touch performance of the SH-2000 (1973) and features an onboard sequencer inspired by the Model 104 of the legendary System 100 semi-modular synthesizer from 1975.
SH-MAX honors its lineage while taking full advantage of modern software capabilities, supporting mono, duophonic, and 16-voice polyphonic operation for rich chords as well as earthshaking unison timbres. It features three unique retro interface themes that pay homage to the aesthetic of the SH-3A, SH-5, and SH-7, providing a visually immersive experience for true vintage synth enthusiasts. Additionally, optional drift and slop controls for the oscillators, filters, amp, and dual envelope generators introduce authentic analog character and warmth to every sound patch.
The highly flexible SH-style stereo mixer and its varied workflow options allow for modular-style signal routing. Each sound source -- VCO-1, VCO-2A, VCO-2B, the ring modulator, and noise -- can be independently routed to the VCF, BPF, or VCA, with each path enhanced with its own chain of studio-quality effects. With 20 effects available to arrange and reuse within its four chains, SH-MAX provides an exceptionally wide sonic palette. Additional features include a four-channel step sequencer capable of parallel playback or extended chaining, along with a touch effects panel that supports channel and polyphonic aftertouch with compatible MIDI controllers.
SH-MAX's legacy traces back to over five decades of synthesizer and electronic music innovation. The SH-series synthesizers have been used by a diverse range of artists, including Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Jean-Michel Jarre, Brian Eno, Gary Numan, Throbbing Gristle, Skinny Puppy, Aphex Twin, Orbital, Mathew Jonson, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, Kitaro, MGMT, Vangelis, The Human League, Blondie, Yello, and more.
With SH-MAX, users can create everything from massive leads and thick basses to lush pads and exceptional sound effects, making it a true synthesis powerhouse at their fingertips. To inspire musicians right out of the box, SH-MAX includes over 300 expertly crafted presets that showcase its broad capabilities. For those wanting even more, the Maximum Overdrive Preset Pack by sound designer James Dyson is available from Cherry Audio for $9.99, offering 100 additional presets that highlight SH-MAX's raw analog tone, advanced modulation, four-channel step sequencer, and abundant effects.
Furthermore, until February 22nd, customers can take advantage of Cherry Audio's "Build Your Own Bundle" promotion at cherryaudio.com. Choose the Pick 3 bundle for $99 (regularly $129) or the Pick 6 bundle for $149 (regularly $169) to mix and match any of Cherry Audio's award-winning instruments for as low as $25 per plugin.
Cherry Audio's SH-MAX synthesizer is now available for $59 at cherryaudio.com and authorized resellers worldwide. SH-MAX is a virtual instrument for macOS (10.13 and later) and Windows (7 and later), provided as AU, VST, VST3, and AAX plugins, as well as a standalone application. A free 30-day demo is available. For in-depth product details, an introductory video, extensive demos, and system requirements, visit cherryaudio.com.
"Sampling antics using Sound Designer and the EMU Emulator II to create a short montage of a favourite film, the music and sound for which was recorded by Tangerine Dream, including use of the EII.
Welcome to the 25th full-length album by Chronos. With this release, Nick Klimenko celebrates the opening of his personal synth museum!
In this unique space, you’ll find 190 hardware and 160 virtual instruments spanning the years 1978–2025. Chronos returns with a third live-played album, exploring the full depth of both analog and digital synthesizers. Everything was performed and recorded live in one take, inside the new museum space - https://nksynthmuseum.com/en/
Nick devoted countless hours practicing live playing, sequencing patterns and harmonies, and shaping rhythms and atmospheres for every single piece on this release.
When the time came, he simply hit the 'record' button — and played each track straight through. This approach echoes the spirit of the 1970s, when Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream performed concerts entirely without computers or music software.
Musically, this album overflows with ambient and cosmic atmospheres, cinematic movements, and unique soundscapes

"Time for another collab with Paul Farvour (@pfmdude).
It's based on a cover I made a while back as a tech demo on the JD-Xi of Tangerine Dream's Love on a Real Train.
Enjoy..."
At 80, Barry Schrader — hailed by the Los Angeles Times as “a composer born to the electronic medium” — releases his first album of new music in over a decade. Ambient : Aether blends ambient textures, distortion, and noise with Schrader’s celebrated sound design, creating an immersive journey through Earth’s atmospheric layers into the unknown.
Composed in 2024–2025, the work experiments with stylistic features of ambient music and controlled distortion. While ambient elements have appeared in Schrader’s earlier works, this is the first album to intentionally embrace the style — yet it remains rooted in his techniques of musical development and timbral transformation. All sounds were created using computer and software; no acoustic sources were used.
Track List
1. Cloudrise (15:12) — Ever‑changing skies in sound.
2. Atmospheric Rivers (13:32) — Torrents of vapor dissolving into rivulets.
3. Supernal Ascent (15:50) — Layered voyage through: Troposphere [0:00], Stratosphere [2:52], Mesosphere [5:30], Thermosphere [8:30], Exosphere [12:26].
4. Aether (15:42) — At the edge of mystery.
5. Selected Review Quotes
“A composer born to the electronic medium.” — Los Angeles Times “Uses timbre fully as a structural tool.” — Gramophone
EMOTIONAL IMPACT
“Conjures up a whirlwind of emotion from some primeval source.” — Bebe Barron. “…outsynthesized Tangerine Dream in its hypnotic electronic coloration.” — New York Times
Barry Schrader has been acclaimed by the Los Angeles Times as “a composer born to the electronic medium” and described by Gramophone as a creator of “approachable electronic music with a distinctive individual voice to reward the adventurous.” His works for electronics, dance, film, video, mixed media, live/electro‑acoustic music, and real‑time computer performance have been presented worldwide.
He is the founder and first president of SEAMUS (Society for Electro‑Acoustic Music in the United States) and recipient of the SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement Award. Schrader has authored Introduction to Electro‑Acoustic Music and contributed to The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Grolier’s Encyclopedia, and Contemporary Music Review. He taught composition at CalArts from 1971 until his retirement in 2016 as Professor Emeritus, and has also taught at UC Santa Barbara, California State University Los Angeles, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His music is released on Innova, SEAMUS, Laurel, Opus One, Centaur, Pure Destructive Records, and Ex Machina."
"I’ve been getting a bit burnt out doing endless video editing lately so when my friend David (Kindred Lost) made a nice cover/demo of his Moog 960 style sequencer doing the bass sequence from Tangerine Dream’s 'Rubycon' and said 'nothing but the 960 can do this' so I fired up my trusty Moon 569 sequencer to see if I could do it too! 🤓 David’s demo sound much more 'Moogy' that mine and is closer to the original TD track, I mainly just wanted to see if I could recreate similar patterns. Check out David's video 👌😎: • Franke and Ruby [posted here]
I used the following modules:
Moon Modular: 569 sequencer
Oakley: Slim VCO B (as VC clock)
Marienberg: Envelope Generator A, VC Sine Phase Oscillator
Noise Engineering: Cursus Iteritas Magnus VCO
STG Soundlabs: Post-Lawsuit Lowpass Filter
Synthetic Sound Labs: Tube VCA, Quad LFO
Synthesizers.com: Q125 Signal Processor
"I keep returning to the bass line off of Tangerine Dreams 'Rubycon' (1975).
This rendering is more of an exploration of variations of how to control that sequence on the synthesizers.com Q960, a clone of the Moog 960 Sequential Controller. Short but fun and always satisfying.
The oscillators used were the Q169 dual Oscillator, a Q206 and Q206A. The Q169 is in square wave and sync, the Q206 is doubling in a sawtooth wave. The Q206A is a triangle wave directly to the mix in a lower octave.
The filter was the Grove Audio G294A Tribute Series Moog transistor ladder low pass.
I also used a tube drive from the Synthetic Sound Labs/CGS 1530 Tube VCA/Timbral Gate module after the output of the filter.
The envelope generators included a Q109 for the final VCA shape, another Q109 as the filter shape, an STG EG for the tube drive gate shape and another STG EG for the lower bass vco.
The signal was split and sent to the Yusynth panning mixer from Lower West Side Studios and to an Echo Fix tape echo/reverb device. The tape echo was panned using the second row of the Q960 sequencer. That row was also sending a filter modulation voltage. The final output of the mix was sent through an Empress Reverb pedal in red reverb+delay setting.
The final third row of the Q960 sequencer was used in 'Third Row Control Of Timing' mode for the fast burst motion as in the original bass line performance by Tangerine Dream."
