This reissue of the Dark Star uses the same basic circuit and updates the design with expanded control ranges and CV inputs for the Noise Clock, Noise Filter, VCO and PWM. Use it as a standalone sound generator or interface it with a modular system for some truly wild sounds!
With the interest in chaos theory and fractals in the past few years, this unit provides an excellent means to explore the effects of chaotic (noise) modulation. The results cover quite a wide range from the haunting to the apocalyptic...

"In 1985 I wrote this in BASIC and a few bytes of ASM for 4 different brands of computer and if I was known for doing anything in high school, this was it, the only thing mentioned about me in my yearbook. I would also leave these disks at computer stores and computer club. Although it is now known that the synthesizer is (capable of) higher quality than MP3, my means of programming sounds into it in the 1980's never had a reasonable explanation for why it worked at all, (and I now know that it simply didn't!,) and in the 1990's other unique methods were tried while this one was considered to be the worst kind of digital sound ever invented. The disk "apparently" has male female and robotic TTS voices, 2 songs, and a few talking games on it. But it seems to have been proved an accidental illusion, especially since it is known to be inaudible through a telephone line.

In other words, I still have the right to make random noise and call it music."

1994 Human Voice Synthesizer Calculator Prototype

"This is one of two prototypes. The other had a display, but was given away and then sadly thrown away. It uses the same kind of speech synthesis as my "awful" disks from 1985, but the method of programming sounds was reasonable in this case. This project was cancelled without ever being tested by for whom it was being designed, and is in a very early and peculiar state. It calculates arithmetic using it's memory as a virtual blackboard, exactly as a person would do it, but has a precision of 14 digits. It has the voices of two people, which were copied from my other projects, because I had not yet gotten around to making a voice specifically for it. The synthesizer was hastily set to work below telephone quality and below worst-case MP3 sample rates but I don't think it sounds bad in this video, especially compared to the "1985 disks".

The video ends as the battery "croaks"."

"A quick and dirty demonstration of the XenoSonic Audio Interface. A Yamaha S03 Synthesizer is hooked up directly to the miniBrute DRSSTC via the XenoSonic Audio Interface.

Since the XenoSonic only produces monophonic output, i prerecorded the Bach Fugue in Gminor on my Allen C-6 Classical organ and then simply added various voices using the Yamaha S03 in real time to the Tesla coil. Its quite a bit sloppy, but thats mostly because i didn't really practice how i was going to play individual voices from the piece and i had a hard time hearing the actual prerecorded music, so its a bit out of synch.

February 3, 2009 - The Bob Moog Foundation will be bringing its Interactive Sonic Experience, or MoogLab, to the inaugural BIG EARS '09 music festival in Knoxville, Tennesee. BIG EARS '09, taking place this weekend (February 6th-8th), promises to be an extraordinary weekend celebrating cutting edge musical explorations. Philip Glass, Fennez, Matmos and Pauline Oliveros are just a few of the innovative acts that will be featured during the festival. You can find out more about BIG EARS here.

The Foundation will be offering its MoogLab experience throughout the weekend. A team of BMF volunteers will be guiding attendees through several interactive stations of Moog synths, theremins and effect pedals as well as a very cool Moogerfooger® Remix Station.
