SouthPole Expedition Part 2: Modulation Mixing and LFOs on AudioMulch

via AudioMulch
"In part 1 of this series about AudioMulch's SouthPole contraption I presented the basics of resonant lowpass filtering. I gave an example of using AudioMulch's automation system to create rhythmic patterns of filtering by automating SouthPole's Base Frequency, Resonance and Gain. If you haven't read it you might want to check out part 1 here. This week's post picks up the story with an explanation of SouthPole's modulation mixing system. Then we'll look at some examples using SouthPole's LFOs (low frequency oscillators) to create various types of time-varying filtering."

Adaptation of the lowpass gate circuit from the Buchla Music Easel

"To learn more about these kinds of circuits, check out my lectures for my class on "Electronics for Music Synthesis:" users.ece.gatech.edu/~lanterma/ems I discuss the Sallen-Key filter topology in Lecture 21. I think I talk about the Buchla circuit in Lecture 22, but I don't remember for sure now."

Natural Rhythm Lopass Gate Project

"Features of the RLPG:

* Up to 3 Audio Inputs
* Up to 3 Control Voltage Inputs
* Offset (Frequency) Control
* Resonance Control
* VCF/VCA/Both Modes (Rotary or 3PDT Option)
* "Deep" Switch to set lower freq range
* Inverted CV Out (From CV Mixer)
* Jumper points to bypass mixer or remove resonance circuit
* MOTM Pot Spacing
* Compatible with www.bridechamber.com panels
* Additional synthesizers.com Power Connector
* +/-15v or +/-12v

Maxim MDS1000 - Simmons SDSV Clone

flickr set by Loscha
(click for more)

"A Japanese clone of the Simmons SDSV. Build quality is pretty good, although they didn't use rust-proof metal on a few places (like the screws that hold the modules in), this is trivial. My unit has a dodgy power supply I haven't had time to re cap and re-regulate yet, so it doesn't work reliably. Sounds great when it works, though!"

Crumar Spirit

via this auction

Not the best shots, but you don't see these often.

"Only 100 made in the world in the 1980's .This synth is number 43. Kept in a smoke free environment and never taken on stage.

If you are here, you probably already know the history on this Rare Crumar Spirit .The Spirit is one of the most complex, challenging, and - above all - powerful monosynths ever produced. . Sounds amazing- aggressive & fat. Everything works great. This one is a gem. The Crumar Spirit was originally designed by Bob Moog( himself), Jim Scott & Tom Rhea and released back in 1983. It has a 37 note keboard with 2 vco's.The two oscillators feature basic sawtooth, triangle and square waves and can be synced together.

The filter section is very nice featuring low-, high- and band-pass filters and switchable 12dB or 24dB slopes. Other features of the filter include an independent envelope with inverted and normal ADSR, key tracking and single or multiple triggering of the filter. Some other features of the Spirit include a built-in ring-modulator, an Arpeggiator with 3 different patterns and that can be linked to the LFO, and there's an external audio input for running external sounds through its filters, LFOs or Ring Mod.

For the hands-on approach, the Spirit is sure to please. There are 24 knobs, 10 switches and 15 sliders to start. There are 3 performance wheels for controlling the Pitch, Mod-X and Shaper-Y modulation effects (see LFO specs below). Using those with the Arpeggiator can get pretty wild. The Arpeggiator features 3 modes: Ripple (Up/Down), Arpeggio (Up several octaves) and Leap (Goes up 1 and then 4 octaves). There are also Auto and preset Glide modes for getting some elasticity or bending effects. Since all the LFOs, envelopes and filters are quite flexible you are sure to get some weird noises, fat basses, synths, etc. with the Spirit. This is a synth that rewards patience, experience, and a lot of thought rather than aimless knob twiddling. But once you've mastered it, all the classic analogue timbres are at your fingertips: warmth, smoothness, grittiness, and screaming analogue pain, all produced with depth, expression, and as much complexity as you could ever desire."

VINTAGE SANKEI KEYBOARD SYNTH

via this auction

"Unusual item made by Sankei in the 1970`s, the unit includes a Keyboard and various rhythms, cassette deck and 3 band radio, it also has a built in Mic but that does not work. Everything else works except the rewind function on the cassette deck. It comes with 2 external speakers and has input for an external mic. Condition wise it is in good condition but the Keys have gone a little yellow through age. It is a great retro looking item and will definitely turn heads."

Moog Prodigy analog synthesizer modified

via this auction. Note this one is from a different seller than this last post. Both Health Club mods.

"Modifications have been made by Health Club Music.
8 jacks have been added and 2 knobs to make the Prodigy a much more flexible synth. Additional mods are available at an extra charge.
Now this prodigy can be connected to a MIDI to CV/GATE converter and more!
The added mods are:
knob for DRONE level, so the VCA will stay on. This makes filtering sounds much better. It can also distort in a very good way if it is turned all the way up when the keyboard is played.
knob for AUDIO INPUT level
jack for AUDIO IN (audio signal to the filter via the mixer)
jack for VCF IN (this is a CV INPUT for the filter)
jack for VCA IN (this is a CV INPUT for the amplifier)
jack for OSC IN (this is a CV INPUT for the oscillators)
jack for KEYBOARD IN/OUT (this can be a CV in or CV OUT)
jack for S-TRIGGER IN/OUT
jack for GATE IN
jack for LOW LEVEL AUDIO OUT"

KORG DS10 DSi Version?

via Tony:
"I’ve just had a look at the AQ interactive site, as I was wondering if there was any prospect of the Korg DS-10 being developed further.

Although there is only a single picture (I can’t find a link beyond this point), It’s noticeable that it’s running on the new DSi model and the screen on display isn’t one that’s part of the original program; or at least that’s one I’m not familiar with?"

It looks like the Song screen with labels for the parts. I can't seem to find this exact screen myself. Anyone with a DS10 out there that can confirm either way?

Bug Clocked Lunetta

YouTube via wonkythomas.

Remember, to see more, click on the Lunetta label at the bottom of this post.

"More Lunetta noises (not loud enough!) being driven by a single clock, with a twist!

My slow 40106 drives the CV in of the 'Woggle Clock' on the breadboard. Inspired by Grant Richters use of a vactrol controlled 555 timer at the heart of the Wogglebug, I've adapted that part of the '#3' cct. for use with a home made LED+LDR in black tape vactrol. The output of the 555 is buffered with a Ken Stone Gate / Trigger cct. using the LM358N instead of a TL072.

You can kinda see / hear it work when I turn the pots, basic speed is controlled by one pot adjusting the amount of light going to the LDR, one pot adds the signal from the CV input.

I like that slow squarewaves going into the CV input create a crude burst generator, with lots of light during the on cycle of the waveform you get fast clock, then slow clock with no light during the off cycle,

Very fun with Lunetta Logic Processing (patent pending)

The finished module will have CV Input, CV Amount Pot, Speed Pot, Trigger Output / LED & Clock Output.

And yes, I really do need a better spot to hook these things up! Really need to clear some space."

KX77FREE - Free VSTs

via http://twitter.com/rekkerd
http://kx77free.free.fr/

The following is an excerpt from the site. Note these are not done with synthedit and note the description for KX-SYNTH-X16-V2 pictured. The site is a good resource on synthesis in general. Be sure to see the other instruments listed there.

"My work is maybe a little different than usual virtual synthesizers, but it is done for the attention of musicians who like to program their own sounds. Even if I explain clearly the KXMOD parameters use, you must have a minimum of knowledge of subtractive synthesis to appreciate them. The sounds provided with my plugins are examples but the presets of the Kxomni and the KX-MODULAD are really nice...

I started to work on KX77FREE plugins in October 2002. Comparing the sound obtained with Synthedit and with my SixTrack, I decided to do my own virtual instruments."

The "dry" and Phantasturized sound is mixed on a mixer.

Another Phantastron is played with the Electric Western ribbon controller. The ribbon sends a gate to a VCA which makes the second phantastron sound only when the ribbon is touched. So, the ribbon is touch sensitive -- very sensitive.
