Buchla Lightning III
via Noisebug on eBay"LIGHTNING III is a specialized MIDI controller that senses the position and movement of handheld wands and transforms this information to MIDI signals for expressive control of electronic musical instrumentation. In addition to functioning as a powerful MIDI controller, LIGHTNING III, with its self contained 32 voice synthesizer, comprises a complete, ready to play instrument.
The bulk of LIGHTNING III's electronics is housed in a half rack cabinet.
A remote head, designed to be mounted on a standard mike stand in front of a performer, contains specialized optics, as well as graphic and numeric displays.Based on principles of optical triangulation, LIGHTNING gathers its information by tracking tiny infrared transmitters that are built into baton-like wands. Unencumbered by wires, these wands provide complete freedom of movement within a performance space that can be as large as 12 feet high by 20 feet wide.
Basically, LIGHTNING III senses all three coordinates of each hand, for a total of six independent coordinates. From this information, LIGHTNING's digital signal processor computes instantaneous velocity and acceleration, and performs detailed analysis of gesture. An easily mastered, musically oriented interface language allows the user to define relationships between various gestures and potential musical responses. In one sort of implementation, LIGHTNING's coordinates might be mapped to various MIDI controllers on multiple channels. Spatial pitch wheels, pan pots, level sliders and modulation wheels are easily defined and great fun to play. Performance gestures can be analyzed for direction and velocity and can be used to generate a variety of notes as well as other musical events. Multi-dimensional zoning capability can be used to create different musical responses in different regions. Everything you need to create the conceptual ensemble (an invisible, acoustic virtual reality).
User definable scale and tuning tables allow one to determine the range and selection of notes occurring along a horizontal or vertical axis. Pitches can be in any order, and the boundaries can be set where ever desired, facilitating the creation of spatial instruments and imaginary orchestras.
LIGHTNING III features a conducting facility that can analyze a conductor's gestures, display deviations from a preset tempo, and signal errors such as missed beats. Simultaneously, LIGHTNING can transmit a synchronous MIDI clock for controlling external sequencers and output programmed note data to accompany specific beats within a measure.
Those tiny, postage stamp size boxes hanging out with the peace dove are memory cards for storing presets. As many as thirty presets can be stored on one card. An additional thirty presets can be stored in RAM, and yet another thirty ROM based presets are provided as tutorial examples (good places to begin the LIGHTNING experience). To facilitate its use in conjunction with other controllers, LIGHTNING possesses intelligent MIDI merging capability. A complete system exclusive implementation enables LIGHTNING presets to be stored and edited via external computers and sequencers."

BEATLES Theremin
YouTube via copperleaves | November 27, 2010 | 3 likes, 0 dislikes
"This song is called THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD and it was one of the last songs the Beatles did together (1970) before the group broke up. For me, this video was an experiment in trying to play precision theremin and sing at the same time. I found that the best I could do was play "fills" (short instrumental phrases between the melody lines), so I only sang one verse.
The song itself has a very interesting history and has its own article on Wikipedia, at the following URL:

The theremin I am playing is a Moog Ethervox, and I am singing into a Sennheiser headset microphone."

The FATTEST, RICHEST MOOG SOUND MADE in a non-modular system. EVERYTHING OF THE CLASSIC MINIMOOG X 6! That's right: 3 VCO's per voice, and there are SIX VOICES, with Program Memory and ANALOG VCO AUTOTUNE (Thank God!) Same controls, same location. Same incredible VCF. And sure, you can make the VCO's "beat" and "roll" with the FINE TUNE vernier control. This is the coveted PLUS version, with refined and updated POWER SUPPLY, MIDI and SEQUENCER. AND, unlike any other MemoryMoog Plus, this one has AFTERTOUCH and VELOCITY Sensing Keyboard (also available WITHOUT it)."
MOOG MINIMOO with Velocity and Aftertouch
via this auction"THE REAL THING: The Legendary MINIMOOG, in ABSOLUTELY MINT condition, fully restored by EXE (40 years experience) and functioning perfectly. WITH AFTERTOUCH AND VELOCITY SENSING ADDED TO THE KEYBOARD!! MAIN ELECTRONICS UPDATED FOR MORE STABLE VCO'S. NOW "THE SOUND" WITH THE EXPRESSIVENESS ONLY AN AFTERTOUCH KEYBOARD GIVES.
The MINIMOOG had several VCO versions. While they all generate the sound the same way, (so "the sound" is always there no matter which version you use) the earlier versions tended to temperature-sensitive at times, and thus drifted in tuning, requiring constant tweaking during performance. That is what you will likely get on other Minimoogs that show up. SOLUTION: Confirm the VCO's are of the LATEST REV. That's what's shown below, and included and calibrated in the MicroMoog MAX here. These were only available in the very latest MiniMoogs."Inside a Kawai SX240

flickr set By kb_cheapmods
(click for more)
This is the Kawai SX-240, an 8-voice, 2DCO hybrid analog synthesizer from the early-mid-1980's. The layout and color scheme are very attractive, but the sound is even better. The only limitations I can see for this synth are: 1. DCO2 is square wave only; 2. there is only an alpha dial for altering sounds (not so bad); 3. the MIDI spec is very limited.
Because they are rare and there are no pics of the internals on Flickr, I wanted to photographically document it. I wish I had a better camera, though!
I got this off ebay for relatively cheap. Was stuck on one sound, had a tweaked bender, and missing the large rotary knob. It was pretty dirty when it arrived, so I cleaned it up. The electrical problem was due to two open traces on the digital board from slight battery corrosion. I removed the old NiCd battery, thoroughly cleaned off the PCB, and jumpered the open traces. I replaced the battery with an Li-ion CR2032 (first installing a diode to disallow charging when plugged in). I then restored the presets and voila - back to life!
Other mods I made were to replace the dedicated power cord with a 3-prong IEC socket. I also used a very nice big aluminum rotary knob to replace the missing plastic alpha-type knob."

There are six modes: Vibrato Synth, Harmonic Sweeper, 2-Octave Arpeggiator, Octave Cascade, Mono FM Synth and FM Arpeggiator.
There are 4 waveforms: Sine, Square, Triangle and Sawtooth.
