Roland SH-01 GAIA - Some 80's patches

"Roland GAIA gets lot of bashing and beating at synth forums, but I've always loved mine. I bought it new when it came out, and I've never thought of letting it go. It's relatively cheap, fun to use and it has great interface and controls. Synth engine is good for learing synthesis and GAIA has tons of hidden modulation and soundscape building possibilities under the hood.

This short video shows couple of the first 80's style patches I recreated with GAIA. Brasses and pads emulate Jupiter-8 sounds. Melody at 'Love In A Real Train" emulates Juno-106 type of sound.
Strings around 1:36 emulates Juno-106 chorus strings.

In almost all cases, GAIA was recorded dry without any of the synths internal FX. Gaia's own presets are drowned in effects, I wanted to show how this sounds dry and with external effects."

"Demo of the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, DK Synergy, Korg Monopoly and Steiner Parker Synthacon. The Prophet 5 is a vintage analog polysynth, the Synergy is a vintage digital polysynth, the Monopoly is a vintage paraphonic analog synth and the Synthacon is a vintage analog monosynth. I start off by playing melodic music and end with more experimental sounds on the Synthacon. I recorded these demos at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum here in California. Some light reverb was applied in post via ValhallaDSP Room."

"This is a Yamaha SY77/ TG77 demo and comparison video with Yamaha DX7. I will also compare the SY77/ TG77 with Roland D-50 and Korg M1.

I will show you key differences between the DX7 and SY77/ TG77. This includes:
- Sampled waveforms
- Self-oscillating resonant digital filters
- Advanced frequency modulation, including algorithm, feedback, AFM source inputs, oscillator with 16 selectable waveforms, envelope generators etc

I will go into detail with AFM parameters for digital filters, algorithm, feedback, oscillator and envelope generator.

The SY77/ TG77 has superb digital filters that can self-oscillate with its higher resonance setting. It's analog-like sound is just amazing. It's filter can be used for low pass, high pass and band pass settings. The you set two filters with the same low pass filter setting, you get -24dB cut off.

I will also give an example of SY77/ TG77 sound design using one of my original patch.

I created this Oberheim OB-Xa emulated sawtooth pad using just one AFM element, giving you 16 polyphony. It uses algorithm 42 with 3 independent towers. As you can assign 3 operators with a feedback loop, I created 3 independent towers producing their unique sawtooth waves. By combining them, you can create an amazingly rich and analog-like sawtooth pad.

The SY77/ TG77 also includes expanded envelope generator. It has 7 levels and rates and you can loop AFM envelopes. I will give you a quick tour of its envelope generator and a demo of a sound that uses the envelope loop function.

The SY77/ TG77 also has a pitch envelope that can be assigned globally (to overall sound) or per operator (you can switch on/off for each operator). This makes it very easy to create an analog-like stab brass sound.

Basically the SY77/ TG77 is a big brother of the DX7 and its FM synthesis, capable of producing far more complex sounds."

"Rare to find an EML 101 in such good condition, they were often owned by educational institutions and were commonly played hard by students. This ElectroComp 101 was used for 18 years in a sound design studio in Hollywood and has been sampled/played extensively on many film soundtracks and TV commercials. A real workhorse that is often described as a poor-man's Arp 2600 but that's not really fair; it has a very unique sound that some describe as harsh, metallic, alien, machine-like, I think this comes from the fact that it has no onboard dynamics and really responds well to reverb, delay and other sweeteners."

"I'm pretty happy with how the "mood" turned out in this one. It feels cinematic, in a way, with heavy brass bass and dramatic bell stabs.

Patch notes:

Noise tools only provides a steady clock to get the patch started. Branches takes that clock as input, and channel 1 randomly flips between outputing a static voltage to (A) Rings' frequency input, and (B) Rings' structure input. In effect, it jumps between to "preset" states on Rings.

Branches' channel 2 uses the same clock input, and randomly chooses whether to forward each trigger to Peaks' channel 1 (A) or 2 (B).

Peaks' channel 1 is in the alternate drum mode. The sound it produces is sent into Rings' input, to be further processed by the resonator. Rings is in the alternate inharmonic strings mode (flashing red LED), which has a built in reverb. No external effects were used in this patch.

Peaks' channel 2 is in tap LFO mode, producing a stepped random voltage. This is sent to Rings' V/Oct input, controlling the fundamental of the resonator. Because Branches will randomly omit triggers sent to the LFO tap input (or rather, send those triggers elsewhere), the LFO tempo changes continually. However, it's still related to the master clock, and so it stays "in time" with the patch. The result is kind of like a randomly changing clock division. Pretty cool interaction between Branches and Peaks there, I think.
