Synthrotek Verb: Modulated Resonator (LMS: Eurorack Expansion Preview)

Published on Jun 24, 2017 Learning Modular

"The Synthrotek Verb is a lo-fi reverb module based on a trio of PT2399 delay chips set up as a resonator to simulate vintage reverb effects. One of its more unusual features is a voltage-controlled Mod parameter, which alters the tuning of the three delay lines. When static, you can use it to dial in different resonant peaks and valleys to complement the sound being fed through it. When modulated, you get an interesting cross between chorus and reverb effects. In the following movie, I explore the Mod function, including using a spectrograph display to better understand its resonant behavior.

This is the second of two movies on the Synthrotek Verb from my Learning Modular Synthesis: European Expansion, released by Lynda.com and LinkedIn Learning July 3, 2017. Vintage FM Synth DX 1024 HYPRA-ROM Sound Memory Card

"Yamaha DX7 FM 1024 HYPRA ROM sound bank cartridge [Extremely Rare!] 1024 Patches. Comes with the original Yamaha ADP-1 adapter cradle for the different versions of the Yamaha DX7 type FM synths which in itself is quite rare and seemingly quite expensive by itself if other Ebay auctions are to go by (feel free to check).

Reasonable condition (apart from missing switch cover - see pic) although this has been kicking around since the 80s so shows the signs of being used, scratches and dings as per the pic - This is very hard to find data rom cartridge made in Germany for the DX7 1024 sounds. There are 3 switches to chose between banks and patches. Switch 1 from A-D, 1 from 1-4, 1 with Alpha and Beta, resulting in 4 x 2 x 4 banks - which means 32 x 32 = 1024 presets for the DX7.

I have absolutely no way of testing this unit as my DX7 has long since gone and there is a real possibility that it may have lost its memory or does not even work thus I am selling this with this caveat. Then again it might work absolutely fine if you plug it in.... I have genuinly no way of telling but the adapter is probably worth quite a bit by itself."

"The Korg SR-120 is an analog drum machine produced in Japan in 1976, and came in two variations, a wood panel version for home/studio use, and a black tolex travel-ready version of which this particular SR-120 is an example. This was the most advanced drum machine from the Korg "Mini Pops" series, which was the name given to a number of early drum machines from Korg during the late 1960s into the 1970s. The machines were based around a number of preset rhythm patterns, such as waltz, samba and rhumba. The onboard sounds are famous for being delightly "lo-fi" and are just as at home in hip-hop as they are in indie/dream pop."

Dave Smith Instruments Prophet REV2 Now Shipping

via Dave Smith Instruments

"We’re excited to announce that the Prophet Rev2 is now shipping! The first units have left our manufacturing facility in San Francisco. Check your local DSI dealer for availability!

The Prophet Rev2 was designed to be a successor to our popular Prophet ’08 poly synth. Like its predecessor, the Prophet Rev2 features two DCOs per voice, and Curtis filters at the heart of its sound engine, but boasts a number of significant enhancements designed to make it more powerful. The result is a boutique-quality instrument at a price that’s affordable to working musicians.

The most obvious difference between the Prophet Rev2 and its predecessor is polyphony. The Prophet Rev2 has 16 voices as its standard configuration — twice the polyphony of the Prophet ’08. (An 8-voice option is also available, as is a voice expansion card for 8-voice users wishing to upgrade to 16 voices at a later date.) Since the synth features bi-timbral operation, two completely independent sounds can be stacked or split (layered together or assigned to two different zones on the keyboard).

Additional features include waveshape modulation, a sub oscillator per voice, digital effects, a modulation matrix twice as extensive as its predecessor, a polyphonic step sequencer that allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step, a gated sequencer that provides 4 different 16-step sequences for complex modulation, and an arpeggiator. Other improvments include a premium-quality, five-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, USB support, and a crisp OLED display.

The 16-voice Prophet Rev2 is available now with a US MAP of $1999. US MAP for the 8-voice version is $1499. US MAP for an 8-voice expansion card is $599. All are available through DSI’s worldwide network of authorized dealers.

DreamsOfWires - Korg Arp Odyssey & AJH Mini Mod

Published on Jun 23, 2017 DreamsOfWires

"A re-recording of a something I uploaded a year ago, which I originally recorded using only the Arturia iSem app ([posted here]). I've wanted to do an analogue version of it for a long time, but I had to make some compromises; the iSem version was using up to 5 polyphonic voices
(10 VCO's), whereas this version uses just 2 duophonic/paraphonic voices (5 VCO's).
The sequencer used was Genome on the iPad into an Expert Sleepers FH-1 (for the Mini Mod part). Both synths recorded simultaneously into AUM, with reverb and delay from AUFX Space and Dub. Interface was an iConnectAUDIO4+, cans were Beyer DT100's, cameras were a Lumix GX7 and an iPhone SE.
It's probably a tad boring to watch as there's no extra video footage/film this time - my PC is over a decade old and couldn't even preview what I'd done so far, so I had to render it as-is. Once I win the lottery I'll upgrade it."

The The Future (?) of the Access Virus

synthmorph has a speculative post up on the future of the Access Virus here. What makes this one interesting is it goes into the reliance of ever obsolete DSP chips. It also lists out the chips used for each Virus. I never managed to pick up a Virus, because every time I was about to be ready a new model would come out. I wanted to pick up one Virus that covered all previous Viruses, which still leads me to the question if the latest can cover the character of previous incarnations. If anyone has an opinion, feel free to leave a comment.

"First we should talk a bit about the special computing chip, the heart of every Virus synthesizer, a certain version of the Motorola 56k DSP (digital signal processors). The origin of the DSP 56000 series came from Motorola's requests to the U.S. Music Industries as to which DSP architecture features they would need to produce synthesizers and other keyboards. This happened in the mid 1980s when the Japanese music industry introduced digital keyboards using ASICs (Application Specific Intergrated ICs), and started dominating this field previously exclusive to US manufacturers. Yamaha, Korg, Roland and others started to outdate Moog, ARP, Oberheim and Sequential Circuits. The result of this request was the birth of the first Motorola 56000 digital signal processor (DSP) generation in 1986. These 56k chips were used widespread also in the audio industry since the mid 90s, not just in hardware synthesizers and effect processors, but appeared as an auxiliary digital signal processor for audio functions in some high-end multimedia computers, like the NeXT, the Atari Falcon or the Silicon Graphics Indigo workstations...

As you certainly know, Virus is a digital synthesizer, with a 56k DSP running software code to generate and modify all aspects of the sounds, these are the exact models:
1997 Virus A - 1 x Motorola DSP 56303
1999 Virus B - 1 x Motorola DSP 56311
2002 Virus C - 1 x Freescale DSP 56362
2005 Virus TI - 2 x Freescale DSP 56367 - 2x150 MHz
2009 Virus TI2 - 2 x Freescale DSP 56321 - 2x275 MHz."

"This is a tutorial of the TipTop Audio Quantizer eurorack module. A quantizer is a module which takes continuous control voltage and outputs a quantized 1V/Octave signal which you can patch into an oscillator. You can then configure custom musical scales so you can turn an LFO into an arpeggiator for example. The TipTop Audio Quantizer has a couple of unique features like a slider which you can assign to various parameters like octave or transpose. It also has a mini note recorder which you can use as a sketch pad to record and loop melodies. It also has a clock input which you can use to clock quantization to synchronize rhythmically."

Rare ZW BASSMACHINE Vintage Synth

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Looking online ZW Electronics is a Swiss/Italian company with not much history behind it and the "Bassmachine" was the only synth to have been commercially available in small numbers.

The instrument has a two-octave keyboard, an octave switch, tune, envelope controls and second oscillator switch with Detune.
This comes with 10 preset sounds with no much control over any of them.

The filter design is a Moog-style transistor ladder type filter, clearly identifiable on the circuit board unclear whether official.

A fantastic synth worthy of a museum or any studio and the "BASSMACHINE" standout text alone draws its own attention.
Search #zwbassmachine on instagram and you will see this very one played back in 2015!

A word brandished pretty loosely is rare, but this is no exception you will be hard pushed to find anything on this extremely rare monosynth and all mentions online or of anything non-working! Schematics are non-existent and this one is the only one of approx 100 that were made."
