Superbooth 20HE: Arturia Keystep Pro with Sébastien

Published on Apr 24, 2020 sonicstate

"One person we always enjoy catching up with at the tradeshows is Sebastien from Arturia. So we were happy when he agreed to talk to us from isolation and show off the Keystep Pro. We do actually have one in for review but Nick just hasn’t had the time to look at it yet considering everything that has been going on…

In this video Sebastien takes us through the Keystep Pro and gives a run down of one set up using the Micro Freak, Drum Brute Impact and a vast array of Eurorack modules. He starts by building up a beat in record mode then adding everything else in real time to build a composition in a couple of minutes."

Roland System 100m | Nexus

Published on May 8, 2020 Alex Ball

Break down video further below.

"Following on from the 'closer look' video [posted here], here's a full performance with the Roland System 100m from 1979.

I tried to demonstrate the versatility of a setup like this by making things like full drum kits, squelchy basses, phased and delayed textures with sequenced filter mod, synth guitars, ring mod nastiness, audio rate down-sampled formants, voltage processed LFOs, lush Jupiter-esque polyphony, a singing and gliding lead, sounds that can't really be described and more.

Many sounds were also created in groups together at one time because you can!

The eagle eyed among you may have noticed that there were actually five 191-J cabs used in the video, although only four at one time.

Across those cabs we had the following modules (and duplicates thereof) and I used every single one of them at some point in the demo.

110 VCO / VCF / VCA
112 Dual VCO
121 Dual Filter
130 Dual VCA
131 Output Mixer
132 Voltage Processor / Mixer
140 Dual Envelope / LFO
150 Ring Mod / S&H / Noise / LFO
165 Dual Portamento
172 Phaser / Audio Delay / Gate Delay / LFO
182 Sequencer
184 Polyphonic 4CV Keyboard*

The only original modules not present are:
173 Signal Gate / Multi
174 Parametric EQ

*The original 184 keyboard arrived in the mail right when I was finishing recording and filming this track, so you only see me using it in one section at the end. I thought I'd explain this for those of you wondering why I used the Arturia KeyStep Pro for almost all of the keyboard duties instead of the original top-of-the-line keyboard. (Side note - the new KeyStep is fantastic).

Other gear used:
Roland RE-201 Space Echo
Roland RE-5 Digital Space Echo
Arturia KeyStep Pro
Ibanez RM-80 Mixer
Ibanez Jem 7DBK
Alvarez ABT60 Baritone Acoustic
TR-808 clap sample
TR-606 Hi-Hats
Oberheim DXa (final choruses)

Mixed by Jakob at Sonic Peak Studio. He breaks down the mix of this track here:"

Polyphonic: Using the Keystep Pro for 4-Voice Polyphony in Eurorack Modular - with AJH Synth MiniMod

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"This video demonstrates the Arturia Keystep Pro controlling a MiniMod system in polyphonic mode, and show's how to enable up to 4 voices of polyphony on the Keystep Pro controller keyboard. The MiniMod system uses just 4 VCO's, envelope generators, VCF's and VCA's to supply 4 simple, single-oscillator voices, which are then complimented by either an LFO or noise source to add interest to the sound. This really is about as spartan as you can get for a modular 4-voice setup, so adding further modules would greatly expand it's sound palette, but this is just a proof of concept. Since it's fully modular, even with such a simple voice structure a surprising range of sounds can be achieved.

This was partly inspired by the earliest polyphonic synths, which were initially huge modular systems controlled by polyphonic keyboard controllers, and then the first polyphonic Oberheim synths, which controlled 4 or 8 individual monophonic synth voice modules individually (the superb-sounding SEM), each needing to be setup and tuned. However, this meant that each voice was free to be whatever the user wanted - similar or completely different than the others, something conventional analogue polysynths can't do.

The Gemini 2412 is used here as it has extensive multi-mode filter options, and conveniently contains 2 fully-featured VCF's per module, but also since it is directly based on the filter from the classic SEM module. A pair of Contour Generators serves as a simple and convenient dual envelope per module, although here they are shared for both VCF and/or VCA.
It's unlikely that many would buy a complete modular system purely to use as a polyphonic synth, but as your system grows it may eventually provide sufficient modules to be used in a poly configuration, even just as 2 voices, such as here: [posted here]

POWER: This module setup and PSU is just an example of the concept - it isn't necessary to arrange the modules in this way, and you should always ensure your power supply is sufficient to provide significantly more power to your selection of modules than is needed, across the +12V, -12V, and 5V power lines. For example, in this setup I'm using roughly 400mA on the -12V rail, but the PSU only provides 500mA to -12V, so this is pushing it a little too close to the limit than is ideal. Modulargrid.net is a great tool to use for designing your system and calculating your power needs, but also consult your PSU's documentation for advice on power usage.

MODULES USED:
Vintage Transistor Core VCO x4
Gemini 2412 x2
Contour Generators x2
Discrete Cascaded VCA x4
Dual LFO + VCA x1 (optional)
Entropic Doom x1 (as a noise source, optional)
Precision Voltages (as an offset for Gemini D-FCV, optional)
V-Scale x1 (as a buffered multiple, optional)

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

A Magical Night in Madrid: Synthesizer Symphony Under the Stars

video upload by Al Platino

"Last night, in the heart of Madrid, a sonic spectacle resonated between the walls of the imposing Almudena Cathedral and the majestic Royal Palace. With the stage set between these two iconic landmarks, I delivered a performance inspired by the rich history, culture, and spirituality of the Spanish capital.

Using the Nord Lead 4R, Elektron Octatrack, and Arturia Keystep Pro, I aimed to capture and convey the essence of Madrid, a city that has deeply inspired me since my first visit. Each instrument played a crucial role in creating this mystical and vibrant atmosphere.

The Nord Lead 4R, with its modulation capabilities and vast sound palette, allowed me to evoke the rich tones of the cathedral bells, mixed with the bustling life of Madrileño streets. I could mimic everything from the gentle tinkle of morning bells to the powerful toll marking the passage of time.

On the other hand, the Elektron Octatrack acted as my sonic canvas, enabling me to sample and manipulate sounds in real-time. I recorded snippets of Madrid's ambient noise: laughter, footsteps, the gentle hum of conversations on terraces, and the distinctive sounds of traffic, to later weave them into a rich musical tapestry that underpinned my performance.

Finally, the Arturia Keystep Pro was the bridge that tied all these elements together. With its sequences and control capabilities, I could steer the direction and flow of the music, adding melodies and harmonies inspired by flamenco, fandango, and other traditional Spanish rhythms.

As the first chords echoed, a visual projection unfolded on the façade of the Almudena Cathedral, showcasing scenes from Madrid's history, from ancient times to the bustling metropolis it is today.

As the night progressed, attendees were taken on a sensory journey. From the dark mystery of the Spanish Civil War, through the cultural renaissance of the Movida Madrileña, to the vibrant pulse of modern Madrid.

I deeply thank everyone who joined me on this sonic journey. It was an honor to share my love for music and Madrid in such a spectacular setting. Here, under the starlit sky and between buildings that have witnessed centuries of history, we all felt the eternity of the moment.

Until next time, Madrid. Thank you for the inspiration. 🎹🌌🎶"

Aerated Distortion: synth track criada com Moog Sub 37 e MPC One

video upload by Marcus Padrini

Tudo sequenciado no MPC One.

During the pandemic, I recorded some ideas with an alternative setup. Now, little by little, I'm transferring the tracks to the main setup. This is the case with the track Aerated Distortion, created from a Dave Smith Tetra preset, with a sequence from Arturia Keystep pro, strings from the Behringer VC340 and lead from the Moog Sub 37. Of all of them, only the Sub 37 remains in the setup.

The Tetra and VC340 have been replaced here by the MPC One and its virtual instruments. I recreated the Tetra timbre using Jura (juno 106) and the strings with Solina from MPC. Performance of The Week: 'Vangelis'-inspired Melodic Eurorack Jam w/ Arturia Keystep Pro

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"A melodic modular synth performance loosely inspired by the late composer Vangelis, who sadly passed away this year (2022), particularly his unforgettable music for the 1983 movie 'Blade Runner'. This is a kind of homage to someone whose work has doubtlessly coloured the music of many musicians who came after him. The instrument used consists of a range of AJH Synth modules to create rudimentary analog percussion, choir' like pad, choppy monophonic pattern, and Blade Runner-is lead sounds, all of which are entirely analogue.

Modules used:
Percussion - Entropic Doom, Multi Burst Envelopes, Discrete Cascaded VCA
Choir Pad - Glide + Noise (a little glide added), Precision Voltages (for choosing note intervals whilst composing) Vintage Transistor Core VCO (x2, sawtooths), Wave Swarm, Fixed Filter Bank 914, Lunar Module (as noise source), Next Phase, Dual LFO + VCA (for panning FFB), Muting Mixer & VCA
Sequence - Vintage Transistor Core VCO (x1), Ring SM (adding 1 sub-octave, Sonic XV filter, Dual RVG (modulating filter), Contour Generators, Discrete Cascaded VCA
Lead - Full MiniMod voice (Glide/VCO x3/Ladder Filter/Contours/VCA), Dual LFO + VCA (pitch vibrato), DH-ADSR (providing envelope for vibrato level)
Sequencer used is the Arturia Keystep Pro"

Prototype Jam! TINRS Fenix IV, mmalex Plinky and Faust on Teensy 4.0

video by Making Sound Machines

"Here's a little prototype jam, using all the lovely modular gear and hardware we've been testing these last weeks! The granular glockenspiel is made with This is Not Rocket Science's Fenix IV Eurorack compatible system-in-a-box - this is a beta machine but production hardware is actually done! TiNRS’ Stijn and Lauri built in an awesome way to load sample banks into the digital oscillator in wavetable mode, so we were able to use a recording of my childhood glockenspiel as grains in this synth sequence, with beautiful warbles from the onboard delay! TiNRS Fenix' sequencer allows for each of its four channels to have its own rhythm subdivisions and to be transposed via MIDI - this is exactly what's happening here using the Arturia keystep pro. Fenix' extra seq channels are triggering a kick from GHzTomash Callisto teensy arduino DIY drum module, and gating some noise percussion using the Fenix' VCA. The lush swell of reverb at the end is coming from a combination of Fenix built-in verb and using our beta unit mmalex Plinky as an FX processor - DIY kits and the expander will soon be available again from Thonk.

The stereo organ pad is made on a Teensy 4.0 arduino, running an additive synth patch made with Faust DSP and the teensy audio library, controlled via MIDI with the Arturia Keystep Pro and patched into the Eurorack with our own Multiplikand module. It's rhythmically chopped using This is Not Rocket Science's Wobbler complex LFO into Mutable Instruments Streams dual dynamics gate, using the TiNRS Fenix' sequencer to reset the LFO in time with the sequence. The bass is Moogs DIY voice Werkstatt 01, a CV-controlled voice with a ladder filter and that lovely Moog sub.

The beats in the ending come from our circuit bent e-licktronic NAVA TR909 clone, sequenced using the Roland Aria TR-8 drum machine. While the NAVA is an exact copy of the famous TR909 circuits, hacked by us with 34 mods to vastly expand the sonic palette of the instrument, the TR-8 is a digital emulation of the same synth and somewhat shunned for its color scheme. If you look beyond that, it's a very practical and lovely machine.

❤️ Huge thank you to everyone sending us stuff to test and build! This is extremely fun!"

Modeling (Clavia Nord Drum 3P - Modeling Percussion Synth // Arturia Keystep Pro Sequencer)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"I wanted to dive a little deeper in the synth engine of the Nord Drum 3P drum pad! So I used 4 of its 6 tracks (sequenced by the KeystepPro) to play monophonic synth parts and the last 2 tracks, to play live some drum sounds (kick and snare).

I was quite impressed by the versatility of the Nord Drum and how much it can be an expressive instrument! Hope I'll become a good drummer one day 😅

Velocity - From scratch 🌠 (Waldorf M + Timeline // Moog Minitaur + H9 // Roland TR6S // Streichfett)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"Another track built from scratch this time with a retro / new wave 80s vibe 😉 recorded in one shot. In the intro, you are hearing the live/raw sound recorded by the camera just to get that retro feel! 😊

Everything was sequenced by the Arturia Keystep Pro.

The chimes sounds are from the Waldorf M, hybrid analog/digital synth (I used its MULTI mode with 3 layers, where velocity has been used to switch between the 3 sounds).

The bass is being played by the Moog Minitaur through the Eventide H9 (Chorus, adding stereo width).

The drums sounds are coming from the Roland TR-6S (with my favorite VINYL SIM effect on its master bus 🤩).

And finally the LEAD/PADS are coming from the Waldorf Streichfett digital string synth.

* Hardware used *

- CHIMES : Waldorf M + Strymon Timeline (delay)
- BASS : Moog Minitaur +Julianna Eventide H9 (chorus)
- DRUMS : Roland TR-6S
- LEAD/PADS : Waldorf Streichfett
- All synth & drum parts sequenced by the Arturia Keystep Pro"
