"We take a detailed look at two of the modules in the Buchla Red Panel Series: the 158 dual channel oscillator and 156M dual channel CV processor. The 158 oscillator is close to the original design from the 100 series by Don Buchla and uses discrete analog components. The Red Panel series also reproduces the original 156 control-voltage processor, but we opt for the "modern" 156M. While it also uses discrete analog components, it is optimized to play well with other Eurorack modules.

"The MOK Waverazor exposes a large array of CV points to control its wave-slicing oscillators. This provides an opportunity to connect a Sensel Morph with Buchla Thunder overlay for expressive timbral control. We experiment with this setup, using an Expert Sleepers FH-2 and FHX-8CV to connect them, along with our Arturia MiniBrute 2 for keyboard and amplitude envelope.

Arturia Minibrute 2S - Let's Build a... West Coast-y, Buchla-ish, Music-Easle-eque Patch!

"The mysterious world of Buchla synths is a quiet fascination for me - one that, out of necessity is conducted from a distance - as the instruments that make up their catalogue are eye-wateringly expensive.

For me, the Buchla Music Easel, seems to typify the whole mysterious vibe; it looks like some kind of retro-futuristic control panel in an alien spaceship - and sometimes sounds like one, but if we look at the specs on paper we have: two oscillators, a wave folder, a low pass gate, an envelope, a source of randomness, a 5 step sequencer and a cool pressure sensitive keyboard…. Well the Minibrute 2S has a lot of that, and I reckon we can bodge the rest of it so… Let's see if we can apply some Music Easel magic and build a 'West Coast Brute" of sorts!

Sound Meccano is an alias of Rostislav Rekuta, a seasoned sound designer and field recordist from Riga, Latvia, who's been making electronic, electroacoustic and ambient music since 1999, most often - in collaborations with various local musicians.
For a long time he collaborated with fellow Latvian artist Evgeniy Droomoff for “Volokno” (2005 / rx:tx) and “Walking Through” (2014 / Naba Music) albums. Continuing the collaboration with the ambient guitarist Jura Laiva for "Andrejosta" (2015 / Flaming Pines), "Sireli Aeg" (2016 / Crónica) and "Salty Wind and Inner Fire" (2017 / Eilean rec.). Since 2007 Rostislav has curated the event series “Space Textures” at The White Night festival in Riga."

Arturia Minibrute Setup:
MEGAfm mono out -- Arturia Minibrute filter input -- Lexicon MX200 effectunit stereo out

Haken Setup:
Haken Continuum Fingerboard midi out -- MEGAfm mono out -- Lexicon MX200 effectunit stereo out

The Haken Continuum Fingerboard is an old one with only midi out. I didn’t use the Y (Up/Down) and Z (Pressure) axis.

Elektron Digitone Setup:
MEGAfm Stereo out -- Elektron Digitone stereo out

In the beginning you hear the sound of the MEGAfm, followed by some sounds of the Digitone.
With 8 Midi CC i controlled the MEGAfm through the Digitone. I also used on the CC many parameter locks.

"There was another jam all ready to record before this one came about, but at the last moment I pulled a creative hissy-fit, tore the patch down and went in a very different direction.

The Minibrute is heading through the trusty Zoom MS-CDR70 providing two lots of delay (to add rhythmic interest) and a reverb (because reverb). The Monologue is heading through the Digitech Polara reverb (because reverb) and the Volca Kick is dry as a bone (because I ran out of pedals)."

"Here's some Eurorack beats and bass that came from wanting to build up a big sounding stereo mix from a small Eurorack mixer, which was the ST. Mix by Befaco. The piece built around that but quickly went into working basslines with moving pitches against a static pedal tone that plays an octave higher. Hints of chord tones develop as the bass moves and the pedal tone stays static. The beats shift with random probability and I'm just playing around with this live.

"We explore the Metasonix RK5 Dual Low Pass Gate. A lowpass gate is essentially a low pass VCF configured to behave like a VCA. The RK5 is a unique take on the LPG with two independent channels that have their own sonic characteristics. It is extremely simple, with just input, output and a single CV per channel. We demonstrate it with envelopes as CV and a variety of input spirses.

'Since part of our remit is to explore an electronic-music history that didn’t actually happen, one inevitable product would have been a lowpass gate. Our version is a dual unit, dead simple Sallen-Key filter with just input, output and CV input for each channel. The tube used is a “high-perveance” dissimilar dual triode, the 17JK8. It was apparently intended for use as a “cascode” RF front-end amplifier in cheap consumer FM radios.'"

"I made this keyboard out of a broken Commodore machine and a Arturia MiniBrute keybed.

This thing is not a MIDI controller nor a Arduino / Raspberry Pi design. It uses carbon contacts that act as switches and connect directly on the keyboard matrix inside a Commodore 64.

Because of this, it can be used with ANY programs that allow the musician to play notes directly on the C64's keyboard, allowing you to use a wide vierity of original music programs that were compat"

STEREO FIELD is one instrument with three uses. It is simultaneously a stereo/quad modular touch plate feedback atonal synthesizer, a stereo/quad audio processor and a pressure sensitive chaotic CV "controller". All three uses are available separately as well as simultaneously and in conversation with each other. The Stereo Field allows its user to manipulate and patch two analog stereo preamp circuits via touch plates. By utilizing skin conductivity as new paths for current to follow you are creating "new circuits" and new sounds in relation to where your fingers are patching. The individual touch plates are directly connected to nearly every connection point of every component in its circuitry (located directly under each corresponding touch plate). When touched with multiple fingers it will create atonal analog feedback with either of the two mirrored circuits represented by interlocking touch-plate circles. The resulting feedback can go beyond the abilities of human hearing (Take caution!) and down to the very slow clicks of a saw waveform and both can often be happening simultaneously."

"Setup with 2 players: ARTURIA MINIBRUTE 2 is 1 channel and on the other there is a modular wiring with WMD PHASE DISPLACEMENT OSCILLATOR into MUTABLE INSTRUMENTS CLOUDS (clone). The latter is controlled via CV by INTELLIJEL METROPOLIS in the end the signal is filtered to taste by CWEJMAN QMMF-4,"

ESK - Ambient 2 with Percussa SSP FX

"Again i used the Percussa SSD as an effect mixer.
The Tom Oberheim SEM gets some dual delay from the Percussa and also a simple sequence.
The first Arturia Minibrute makes the solo sound with a long reverb FX from the Percussa.
And the second Arturia Minibrute has only a Midi connection to the EMU Ultra Proteus which goes into the Percussa with a comb filter and a delay FX.
