Jean-Michel Jarre at The Paramount Theatre Seattle

Jean-Michel Jarre at The Paramount Theatre

Above you'll find a photo stream of some pics I took at the Jean-Michel Jarre concert last night at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle (mouse over the image and use the controls on the left and right to flip through). Apologies for the quality of the pics as I only had my iPhone at the show. I was there to enjoy it, not to document it. That said, I of course couldn't help but take some pics and video. I still need to review the videos, so they may come in follow-up posts if they do JMJ's fantastic performance justice - see this post for a couple of videos from the San Jose concert for now - there are others on YouTube as well. I will say the concert was an absolutely incredible experience. If you ever get a chance to see Jean-Michel Jarre perform live DO NOT miss him. P.S. There are still two dates left for the tour in Southern California, Coachella tonight in Indio, and the Spreckels Theater in San Diego. Seriously, if you can make either, just go. The majority of the light show was all lasers and LED panels that moved across the entire stage. The effect was 3-dimensional. Jean-Michel frequently spoke to the audience and gave insight and background to many of the classic and new tracks they performed. I was fortunate enough to have Stephane Gervais, who performs with JMJ, invite me to the show. I was able to meet one of my personal heroes, an incredible influence on my life, early years, and now as an adult. I literally have Jean-Michel Jarre to thank for getting me into synths. It either was that or drums! :) Drums were not an option where I lived and I loved listening to Rendez-Vous when I was just 16. I ended up purchasing an Oberheim Matrix-6, brand new, and the rest his history. Thank you to Stephane and Jean-Michel for being such incredible people. Your music makes the world so much better.

P.P.S. Some synth spotting included Roland gear, an EMS SYNTHI, MacBeth Elements, ARP 2600 MKIII Orange and Black, and a GRP system.

Update: videos added below. These were taken with the iPhone so not the best; per above I was there to enjoy the show not capture it. I zoomed in while filming so the set in person was about 4x larger that what it looks like in these videos. I did see it all in person. The ceiling you see above is actually the underside of the second floor balcony seating. It was truly amazing to see, and it sounded pristine. The iPhone just isn't capable of capturing it unfortunately. Regardless, these videos should give you a sense of what it was like to be there.

03 Jean Michel Jarre - Chronologie 1 - Monaco

YouTube Uploaded by JARREmenoid on Jul 1, 2011

"This track from Jean Michel Jarre's album Chronologie (1993).

H.R.H Prince Albert II of Monaco and his fiancée Ms Charlène Wittstock, in celebration of their wedding, will offer a concert by Jean Michel Jarre. On Friday 1st of July 2011 at 10pm, the Principality of Monaco will pulsate with Jarre's electronic music.

Hercules Port, entirely transformed into a one-night stage, will showcase Jean Michel Jarre's concert-event, a special creation for Monaco, in this historic context.

Monaco will be the casket for a stunning evening. Jarre's futuristic concert marries lighting and laser choreography, HD videos and pyrotechnics, the visual score of his universal music, performed from the stage centred in the Port.

A concert in the city, or a city-in-concert, this civic event, open to all, will be broadcast throughout the Principality, as well internationally.

"It is a great honour to have been chosen by Prince Albert of Monaco and his future wife for such an event. It is also a real pleasure to be able to perform in the exceptional site of Hercules Port" states Jean Michel Jarre.

Jean Michel Jarre launches a Music App EōN on the Web Summit

Published on Nov 7, 2019 servicesmobiles

"Jean Michel Jarre unveils infinite music app EōN - iOS app produces infinite, ever-evolving music composed by Jarre
- https://apps.apple.com/app/e%C5%8Dn-b..."

"EōN produces infinite, ever evolutive music, abundant in variations, composed by electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre, accompanied by a constant progression of organic visuals.

Once you launch the EōN app, you can listen and watch a new infinite musical experience which has been designed to be absolutely unique for each listener, and always different each time you launch the app.

You can take this journey for as long as you want, the only limit is your device's battery!

JEAN-MICHEL JARRE ABOUT EōN:
« EON » is an ancient Greek God associated with Time & Eternity.

The « time » represented by EON is infinite and unbounded in the sense of « ages » and « forever ».

In cosmology, geology or astronomy, EON is often used in reference to a period of a billion years…

I named this project EōN, as it best defines exactly what it is – an infinite musical and visual creation, which offers each individual a unique experience on its primary support as an App: on each device, and on each launch of the EōN App, you will hear and see a unique ever-evolving orchestration of the music & the visuals. EōN is a never ending, never repetitive, organic art-piece that will live & grow forever in everyone’s own singular space-time continuum, at the tip of their finger.

Personally, I truly feel that EōN is probably one of my most exciting creative projects since Oxygene. I always wanted to create a music specific for each listener and which could constantly evolve. Here it is. EōN is conceived & composed for your own infinite journey.

I had a very clear idea of the organic, living visuals I wanted to accompany my music creation, and I was very lucky to have spent some time in Tokyo at Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (Sony CSL) where I found Alexis André and his singular visual world. Sony CSL with Alexis have conceived and developed an algorithm generating the endless flow of ever-evolving graphics, which like the music is never ending, nor repetitive.

The algorithm and audio engine that orchestrates the music of the EōN App have been engineered by Alexis Zbik & Vianney Apreleff from BLEASS after we defined the rules of the system together.

Synth Spotting & Synth Talk Interviews with Jean-Michel Jarre - New EQUINOXE INFINITY Release

Published on Nov 15, 2018 jeanmicheljarre

"Order your copy of EQUINOXE INFINITY here: https://jean-michel-jarre.lnk.to/Equi..."

You can find additional info at http://jeanmicheljarre.com.

"For my new album project EQUINOXE INFINITY I started for the first time with the album cover not the music. I still think that Michael Granger who did the original EQUINOXE cover created one of the best album covers of all time. For the original it was all about the WATCHERs. These strange creatures watching us? Watching Space? Watching machines? Watching a natural phenomenon ? We don’t really know…they are not scary, but odd and mysterious. So I took the original Watchmen of the EQUINOXE cover to continue the story.

I recently discovered the work of Filip Hodas, a super talented young artist, and asked him to create two different artworks in line with my vision for EQUINOXE INFINITY. One cover shows mankind in peace with nature and technology and the other depicts a picture of fear and distortion with machines taking over the world. With the artwork for Oxygene I wanted to draw attention to the poisoned state of planet earth. With these two artworks for EQUINOXE INFINITY I want to bring attention to the two scenarios we are facing today with our love for & our dependance on innovation and technology. The music of EQUINOXE INFINITY is the soundtrack to those two different worlds."

XILS-lab Releases miniSyn’X

"XILS-lab launches low-cost luscious soft synth emulation of Eighties polysynth par excellence!

'I’ve just got miniSyn’X and am so excited, because the Synthex is a fantastic rarity. Thanks to XILS-lab for giving everyone the opportunity to play with it.'

- Jean-Michel Jarre (April 2015)

GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software company XILS-lab is proud to announce availability of miniSyn’X — an authentic, cost-conscious soft synth emulation of a much-loved Eighties-vintage analogue polysynth of Italian origin that helped define the sound of an era — as of April 8...

miniSyn’X is a multi-format (AAX, AU, RTAS, VST), 32- and 64-bit polyphonic, duo-timbral virtual analogue synthesizer plug-in for Mac (OS X 10.5 and later) Windows (XP, Vista, and 7/8) that faithfully emulates the still-sought-after sound of the Synthex, a luscious, 1982-vintage, eight-voice programmable analogue polysynth independently designed by Mario Maggi and built by Italian home organ manufacturer Elka. Indeed, it was much loved by synth luminaries of the day — not least French synth wizard Jean-Michel Jarre, whose well-known Laser Harp performances still emanate exclusively from an amazing-sounding Synthex patch produced by one-time UK demonstrator/ programmer Paul Wiffen and audible in isolation in ‘Second Rendez-Vous’ on Jarre’s multi-million-copy-selling Rendez-Vouz album of 1986. Pity, then, that the Synthex did not sell in such Jarre-like quantities during a four-year, three-stage (50-, 800-, and 1,000-unit) production run, with one last post-production unit being built especially for Stevie Wonder, such was the legendary American singer-songwriter/multi- instrumentalist/record producer’s love for the future-classic instrument that initially failed to fly in the face of the-then ‘art nouveau’ digital age of dominating desirable FM synthesis from Yamaha’s considerably cheaper, MIDI-equipped DX7, and subsequent super-selling, all- singing, all-dancing digital designs from the likes of Roland (D50) and Korg (M1).

Win a Vintage Restored OSCar From Novation! - Timeline of Synths by Designer Chris Huggett

Novation has created a fantastic timeline of synths that were designed by and with Chris Huggett. Not only was he the mastermind behind Novation's line of synths, but also EDP (Electronic Dream Plant) and the Oxford Synthesizer Company OSCar.

"Most people know him as the genius behind Wasp and OSCar, the legendary monosynth from Ultravox's Love's Great Adventure, Stevie Wonder's Skeletons, and Jean-Michel Jarre's Revolutions Overture.

Chris' synths have been used by everybody: Orbital, Ultravox, Tom Yorke, Trent Reznor, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Stevie Wonder, Jean Michel Jarre, Keith Emerson- the list is endless. His heritage synths are sought across the world, and sell for upwards of £5000.

He is a true synth legend. He is also our synth designer. Every Novation synth has been conceived, shaped and refined by his passion and expertise, which spans five decades. To celebrate that, we're giving away an OSCar!"

Click here for the timeline and how to enter. I captured the timeline of synths below for the MATRIXSYNTH archives. It's not as nice as Novation's timeline so be sure to see it there while it's up!

Gamechanger | Audio launches crowdfunding campaign for electro-mechanical MOTOR Synth

"RIGA, LATVIA: having successfully showcased MOTOR Synth as the world’s first electro-mechanical desktop synthesizer at SUPERBOOTH19 in Berlin, May 9-11 — wowing well-known attendees like legendary French electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre and Atlanta-based American electronic musician and acclaimed sound designer Richard Devine in doing so, uncharted music electronics territories explorer Gamechanger | Audio is proud to announce that its IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign starts on Tuesday, May 28 (at 4PM GMT)…

Once its IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign commences, MOTOR Synth will be available to pre-order — prices starting at $749.00 USD — for 30 days. After the crowdfunding campaign closes, MOTOR Synth will only be available for online and in-store purchase at an MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) of $1,299.00 USD when shipping starts, scheduled for around November/December 2019.

As the world’s first electro-mechanical desktop synthesizer, MOTOR Synth really represents a new method of analogue audio signal synthesis since digitally-controlled electromotors (used to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy) have never before been used as the principal sound source for a commercial musical instrument. In a nutshell, MOTOR Synth produces sounds by accelerating and decelerating eight electromotors to precise RPMs (revolutions per minute) that correspond with specific musical notes. Each electromotor is fitted with a magnetic pickup/inductor and an infrared photosensor that reads a spinning optical disc with printed sine, sawtooth, and square wave-shapes. Besides using motors as oscillators, the rest of the synth’s features are designed in the best tradition of analogue gear.
