New System 80 JOVE - Open Source Roland Jupiter-6 Inspired Eurorack Filter Module

You might recall System 80s Roland TR-808 eurorack module. It appears they now have a new open source eurorack filter module based on the Roland Jupiter-6. Demos below.

Details via System 80:

"The Roland Jupiter-6 is a 1980s analogue polysynth with a great sounding multimode filter that is quite distinct from other Roland filters of the same era. Here it is recreated in a 14 HP Eurorack module with an added 2-pole 12 dB low pass mode, reminiscent of the Jupiter-8. Like most vintage Roland filters, it is based around a cascaded Operational Transconductance Amplifier (OTA), in this case using the LM13700 OTA in place of the obsolete IR3109 quad OTA.

Sound

Carefully compared to an original Jupiter-6, JOVE is a faithful interpretation of the Jupiter-6 multimode filter without using obsolete parts.

Features

4 modes: 24 dB low pass, 12 dB low pass, band pass and high pass
2 audio inputs, one log attenuated and one non-attenuated
2 frequency CV inputs, one unipolar input and one attenuverted input
1 resonance CV input, non-attenuated
Open Source

JOVE is open source hardware. The design files are available on Github"

Vermona randomRHYTHM running everything (noodle)

Published on Mar 17, 2018 Molten Music Technology

"A simple demonstration of the Vermona randomRHYTHM where it's running the entire show. All triggers and gates generated by the randomRHYTHM. No sequencers used, all oscillators just droning.

Patch notes:
The randomRHYTHM has 10 outputs - quarter, eighth, sixteenth, triplet and combined Seq output x2.

Left side:
Quarter - triggers kick drum on Erica Pico Drum
Eighth - triggers snare on Erica Pico Drum
Sixteeth - triggers closed hi-hat on 2HP HAT
Triplet - triggers Maths envelope applied to both main and sub output of Erica Graphic VCO set to a 4th interval
Seq (combines all triggers) - triggers Maths envelope applied to Make Noise ST0 playing a high note

Right side:
Quarter - triggers open hi-hat on 2HP HAT
Eighth - triggers Basimilus Iterita Alter
Sixteenth - clocking Batumi LFO applied to JOVE filter on Erica Black VCO
Triplet - clocking Turing Machine modulating Basimilus S/L/M
Seq - triggering Z4000 envelope which is combined with LFO applied JOVE

The two "DICE" buttons re-seed the probability of each channel firing. Complexity governed by the height of the slider.

Full randomRHYTHM review coming soon."

System 80 – 860 Mk 2

video by SchneidersLaden

"The 860 Mk2 is the successor of the widely respected first recreation of the Jupiter-6 filter by System80 that was named Jove. It offers the same sound and some updated functions compared to the original Jove filter, which is no longer available. The filter brings a lot to the table, is only 10hp wide and can be operated in four modes: 24 dB lowpass, 12 dB lowpass, bandpass, highpass. There are two inputs each for audio and CV and another CV input for controlling the resonance – and the build quality is excellent.

The sound and behavior of the filter is very 'Roland' – it feels home in more aggressive lead sounds and the resonance is really wonderful, yet the sound loses a little power in the low-end with more resonance. This is by no means a bad thing; in fact, it can be seen as a very musical behavior – plus, the resonance really blends in nicely with the original signal. And have you heard the highpass filter setting? One of the absolute strengths of this filter!"

Lower West Side Studio M401 Multimode Filter Resonator

video upload by Lower West Side Studio

"A few seconds of playing with our M401 Multimode Filter Resonator during calibration

For more information visit https://richsstudioproject.wpcomstagi..."
Note they are currently having a Cyber Monday sale that ends tonight.

"The ARP 2500 was made famous for sounds it created with its 1047 Voltage Controlled Filter. You can now add that rich, incredible sound to your MU modular synthesizer with the M401 Multimode Filter Resonator from Lower West Side Studio.

The M401 Multimode Filter Resonator is the Lower West Side Studio adaptation of the ARP 1047 filter. The 1047 filter is what gave the ARP 2500 its legendary sound. The M401 Multimode Filter Resonator features;

Simultaneous filter outputs including LowPass, Highpass, Bandpass and a Variable Frequency output The Bandpass output has a gentle 6 decibels/octave slope on either side of its voltage-controllable “corner” frequency, making it ideal for replicating acoustic resonators. At the other extreme, it can be set to a very high “Q” or feedback, allowing only a very narrow band of frequencies to get through.

The M401 can act as a percussion module with a dedicated input for a gate or trigger signals to “ring” its filter with adjustable decay.

The M401 also offers features not available on the original ARP VCF including adaptive AGC input that reacts to input amplitude and settings and adaptive TRIG input that guarantees a full trigger pulse at all frequency settings"

Here is an interview with Dakota Melin, the designer of the M401 Multimode Filter Resonator:

Frequency Freaks Workshop - May 2021 upload by Frequency Freaks

"This months workshop has a special extended edition of the Gear Chronicles by Heidi Chan featuring a new Toronto based Eurorack module designer Venus Instruments Veno-Echo, the updated System80 Jove filter, and the new Filter Resonator from Hale (Dakota Melin) along with some very cool performances!"

Live Techno Eurorack Modular Synthesizer | Sworn64

Published on Feb 5, 2020 sworn64

"Live Eurorack Modular Techno Synthesizer | Sworn64

This is my first patch with the WMD Crater kick drum module and MSCL compressor. The bassline is going through the MSCL with the kick in the sidechain input. The bass is a Roland 512 oscillator through a System 80 860 Filter (The smaller version of the JOVE filter). Intellijel Dual ADSR is controlling the filter and the VCA output which is an Intellijel Quad VCA. Snare Drum is the Hexinverter Mutant Snare. The lead synth is the Noise Engineering Manis Iteritas with various voltages sources mixed t an Intellijel Scales quantizer to sequence pitch. The voltage sources are a clocked Mutable Instruments Marbles, a stepped random from a Make Noise Wogglebug (also clocked) and a cycling Make Noise Maths. These are all being mixed through an Intellijel Triatt. Noise Engineering Lapsus Os is used to perform the range of pitch to the Manis Iteritas via the Wogglebug’s External input. Wintermodular Eloquencer is the main sequencer and I’m using the EME expander for performance of kick and snare drum fills and mutes. The whole mix is sent through a WMD Overseer filter. The Intellijel Plannar is used to perform the filter cutoff as well as mix in some white noise from the Steady State Fate Quantum Rainbow. Mix is through a WMD Performance mixer with the Halls of Valhalla reverb on the Tip Top Audio Z-DSP and a Make Noise Mimeophon for Delay effects. The bassline is also going through the 4ms DLD for some stereo delay. The atmospheric background synth is the Mutable Instruments Plaits through a Strymon Engineering Magneto. Xaoc Devices Batumi is modulating lots of things. I am tweaking some random samples from the 4ms STS that have a really short loop on them to create some interesting sound effects here and there.

The LED lightbar is a Strange Electronic Lightstorm, a eurorack module that controls the LED bar via incoming CV. Thanks to Strange Electronic for providing the prototype arms to hold the lightbar above my modular so it lights up all of the gear. It looks awesome!"

Live annotated eurorack emotional cinematic synthwave, ARP-2600, Moog, OB-6 Tangerine Dream inspired

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a live cinematic synthwave electronic music performance inspired by later Tangerine Dream music, where I wanted to setup a more meditative environment and create a slow musical progression by interweaving layers with the Eurorack, using the electric bass as a guitar type of instrument, providing bass from the Moog Grandmother, chords from the DSI OB-6, and texture from the ARP-2600, and more texture from the Buchla 208c Easel Command. This is an entirely live and unrehearsed improvised performance, and I included annotations to show some of what I'm thinking about and also to demonstrate the different musical themes weaving in and out of the texture Since I'm a film composer by trade, this came out relatively cinematic and would work in certain movie score settings. This is a very simple setup to make a big sound. I hope this is educational for you as well, in terms of how I put these performances together. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!

Patch Notes:
Eurorack:
Stillson Hammer running at x6 multiply but using 1:1 gate from 0-ctrl to make bass. Two envelopes, one to VCA, one to filter.
Tempi clock divider running two channels of Make Noise René. First channel is to Dixie II oscillator to Jove filter to Erberverb. Second is to Serge NTO to Serge VQVCF to Echophon. I'm using a x4 clock divider to the Y channel, which is 1:1 to the VCA gate, but I'm using the C channel gate to the filter, which creates an interesting rhythm.

Moog Grandmother:
Normalled patch

ARP-2600:
3 oscillators tuned in octaves.

DFAM:
Pitch to Noise volume to create snare.

OB-6:
Polysaw chord setting"

TB-303 Acid Ambient Eurorack Modular Synthesizer | Happy 303 Day

Published on Mar 2, 2020 sworn64

"Roland TB-303 through an MXR Distortion+ pedal, synced to the System80 880. Moog DFAM on the ambient, noise percussion. Main lead synth is the Noise Engineering Manis Iteritas through a Make Noise Mimeophon. Melody is created from clocked stepped random of a Make Noise Wogglbug with occasional voltage sweeps mixed in from a cycling Maths, all quantized by an Intellijel Scales. Super saw chord pad is an Acid Rain Technology Chainsaw filtered in stereo by a System80 Jove and 860.

Xaoc Devices Batumi is sending various LFO modulations throughout the patch to make it ebb and flow. Delay on the 303 from the 4ms Dual Looping Delay. Reverb is the Halls of Valhalla on the Tiptop Audio Z-DSP. Mix is through the WMD Performance mixer.

Did you celebrate 303 day? Have you ever made ambient music with an acid bassline? Let me know in the comments.

Supercritical Demon Core Oscillator 16 Oscillators in 12 HP

Published on Aug 2, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Supercritical's Demon Core Oscillator has 16 analog DCO oscillators in just 12HP and with the expander it can even be used as a polyphonic oscillator bank. The Demon Core is great for giant super saw swarm oscillator sounds or more subtle unison.

To make a complete synthesizer with the Demon Core as the oscillators we added a System 80 Jove Filter and used a TC Electronic June 60 chorus pedal to complete the vintage Roland sound.
