Lo-Pass Gates (LPG) | From the Buchla 292 to Mutable Streams

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I've been using a lot of LPG models, including a few that don't use vactrols. However, I use the Buchla 292 as a reference because it represents the original design. If it doesn't (at least) sound like a 292, it's not a LPG in the classic sense. But it can still be something better or cooler. Manufacturers have the freedom and creativity to build on it, and make it their own, like the QMMG, Streams and the Steady State Gate.

The MakeNoise modules are strongly represented, because it's cool to see all the subtle (and not so subtle) differences between modules. They're all unique signs of the times.

I wish I could include the Rabid Elephant Natural Gate because it may be the most natural gate around, and seriously missing in this collection. It is advertised to be 'strike speed aware', and it also knows that a high note rings shorter. I managed to find a reasonably priced one in Germany and it's on its way to the Lab. It also seems the Rabid Elephant website came back to life, so hopefully they're producing again.

It's funny, but I got Mutable Streams about six years ago and couldn't position it next to the Veils VCA. I remember buying it for the compressor. At the time I had no idea what a LPG was. The manual talked about Buchla, but what the hell did I know. I remember watching DivKid's video, but at the time it sounded like Russian poetry.

Now I know what an LPG is, but my encounter with Streams is about 24 hours young. I remembered a little vactrol symbol on Streams (I am blessed with photographic memory), so I looked it up in my box of forgotten modules, read the manual and was surprised to read it's a dedicated LPG module. All modes have something to do with a low pass gate. I patched it up and was blown away by the possibilities you probably already know about. But I need to learn too, especially stuff I have lying around unused for many years.

Modular Percussion: Rings, Elements and Stolperbeats

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Super excited to be part of Dutch Modular Fest @dutchmodularfest4609 today - a super nice one day modular meet in Utrecht NL with workshops, lots of great synth makers and concerts. We will be showing our #Stolperbeats drum trigger sequencer and a handful of rare unreleased prototypes.

If you've been eyeing one of our Eurorack DIY kits and you want to build it together with us, today is the perfect opportunity! Hang out with us and build a Farbfolder, Farbshaper, Farbhighpass or TausenddB and Multiplikand with us.

Our friends Stijn and Priscilla from TiNRS @thisisnotrocketscience3942 will be showing their awesome new collaborations with Paul Error Instruments@paultasbeeb: Brinta, a lovely granular module for live recording and processing audio, and White Rabbit, a fantastic reverb and delay ranging from etheral to glitchy.

Lauri @vaski will show off his beautiful new 2HP Lights Stereo Visualizer audio visualisation module and a handful of other incredibly clever utilities like the ECS-4 Triggered Switch and his AM-3/3 Triple Attenuverter Matrix.

We've been playing with prototypes of these modules for a while and it's super exciting to see them being released now!

Today's video is a little jam that happened when packing for Dutch Modular Fest. Stolperbeats is seen here sequencing Mutable Instruments awesome physical modelling synths #Elements as well as #Rings through their Streams dual dynamics gate with percussion from our own secret modular drum prototype.

The reverb in this sketch is @Befacosynth Lich, a great programmable multi-function module based on the @RebelTechnologies OWL platform. If you are into PureData, Max or Faust, you should give this one a whirl!

Prototype Jam! TINRS Fenix IV, mmalex Plinky and Faust on Teensy 4.0

video by Making Sound Machines

"Here's a little prototype jam, using all the lovely modular gear and hardware we've been testing these last weeks! The granular glockenspiel is made with This is Not Rocket Science's Fenix IV Eurorack compatible system-in-a-box - this is a beta machine but production hardware is actually done! TiNRS’ Stijn and Lauri built in an awesome way to load sample banks into the digital oscillator in wavetable mode, so we were able to use a recording of my childhood glockenspiel as grains in this synth sequence, with beautiful warbles from the onboard delay! TiNRS Fenix' sequencer allows for each of its four channels to have its own rhythm subdivisions and to be transposed via MIDI - this is exactly what's happening here using the Arturia keystep pro. Fenix' extra seq channels are triggering a kick from GHzTomash Callisto teensy arduino DIY drum module, and gating some noise percussion using the Fenix' VCA. The lush swell of reverb at the end is coming from a combination of Fenix built-in verb and using our beta unit mmalex Plinky as an FX processor - DIY kits and the expander will soon be available again from Thonk.

The stereo organ pad is made on a Teensy 4.0 arduino, running an additive synth patch made with Faust DSP and the teensy audio library, controlled via MIDI with the Arturia Keystep Pro and patched into the Eurorack with our own Multiplikand module. It's rhythmically chopped using This is Not Rocket Science's Wobbler complex LFO into Mutable Instruments Streams dual dynamics gate, using the TiNRS Fenix' sequencer to reset the LFO in time with the sequence. The bass is Moogs DIY voice Werkstatt 01, a CV-controlled voice with a ladder filter and that lovely Moog sub.

The beats in the ending come from our circuit bent e-licktronic NAVA TR909 clone, sequenced using the Roland Aria TR-8 drum machine. While the NAVA is an exact copy of the famous TR909 circuits, hacked by us with 34 mods to vastly expand the sonic palette of the instrument, the TR-8 is a digital emulation of the same synth and somewhat shunned for its color scheme. If you look beyond that, it's a very practical and lovely machine.

❤️ Huge thank you to everyone sending us stuff to test and build! This is extremely fun!"

Sea People - Hardware / No DAW Jam #36

Published on Sep 6, 2018 Jay Hoskins

Title: Sea People
Genre: Electronic Melodic Ambient Downtempo
Artist: Rite Rain Causality - Jay Hoskins

In this track the Tonestar 2600 provides the bass line sequenced by the Timbrewolf. I wanted to try longer patterns in the eurorack so all four channels of the Timbrewolf are used and switched through a sequential switch. The gates are independent of the cv and generated by the Turing machine. The Minilogue provides an initial pad and then a melody is recorded live into the sequencer. The circuit is doing drum duty and additional bass reinforcement. Finally the MS-20 is adding some lead pads. Delay and reverb are from the Flashback and Hall of Fame.

Played live without a computer and recorded directly from the mixer outputs.

Modular Performance: Elegiac Theme

Published on Dec 18, 2017 Mike Thomas

"This piece grew out of a faster thing I had worked on for a few days, but got frustrated with. I decided to slow things down and see how it worked.

Ornament & Crime is in Harringon 1200 (chord) mode, and sending v/oct to the Verbos HO, Sputnik Oscillator, and Elements. Chord changes and inversions are driven by Verbos Voltage Multistage.

Mutable Instruments Frames is in sequenced mode, modulating several Elements parameters and driving octave changes on the O&C.

At some point it struck me to hold down the Gate button on Elements and wiggle the Flow and Blow knobs. Additional modulation of Elements' tone is provided by FM from Ripples in self-oscillating mode.

The HO and the Sputnik Osc are fed to Streams in (red) vactrol mode, and on to Clouds' left and right channels. Clouds is in Parasite looping delay mode.

Various modulation provided by Qu-Bit Chance, Batumi, and Sputnik WCRS.

Recorded direct to Sony PCMD50. No post-processing. Video recorded on a Sony A6000 with Sony/Zeiss 35/2.8."

amygdala.exe | Eurorack Composition

Published on Jul 10, 2017 Head[Space]

"Modules used and some brief patch notes:

All sequencing is programmed on a pair of ER-101's, one of which is coupled to a ER-102 sister controller module.

Continuing on my journey of creating music solely on a modular synthesiser, this song has been in the works for a while (a lot longer than I would usually spend on a patch anyway) partially because i'm expecting an ER-301 any day now after a long lead time, I wanted to integrate the 301 as i'm interested how the 301 is going to affect the music I can create in a modular environment, i'm excited to sink my teeth into it. Secondly to that, I felt an emotional connection with this track i've enjoyed listening to it, exploring it and programming it.

At the heart of my rack is a pair of ER-101's that do all of the sequencing, each one has 4 tracks, each track has 3 outputs (CV-A,CV--B and GATE) I will often use CV-A for melody or pitch and CV-B for distributing control voltages to parameters around the rack, if however CV-A is on a track that is only outputting Gates that gives me 2 channels of CV that can be fine tuned to any value, lots of control just the way I like it. I've always written music in a DAW, and the ER-101 pair allows me to approach sequencing in a similar, reserved and meticulous way.

They provide me with all the brushes I need for my paintings.

There are 3 main voices,
- Elements in Ominous Voice mode 4x4 FM operator, which is the main melody. Damping controls the amount of filter modulation from the internal envelope on the output of Elements, so to add accents and introduce more frequency content. CV-B track 3 on the ER-101 controls damping, and the entirety of track 3 controls Elements.
- Loquelic Iteritas - in SS mode playing chords with rings. Some modulation sent from Ornament and Crime controls FOLD (introducing more frequency content) using the same gate to trigger a different envelope.
- Rings in 2x2 FM operator mode, tuned to a nice interval for nice dispersion of harmonics. This plays chords with Loquelic (and itself, polyphony is set to 4 voices), small amount of modulation to the POSITION on Rings, controlling the feedback between oscillators creating some really nice beating on the lower frequencies. Rings is sent to the Erbe-verb which is always modulating itself so the internal Lfo is set to 11.30, decay is set to 12.00, Depth at 14.00 decreasing the depth of modulation, Tilt at 10.00 filtering out some of the upper harmonics and absorb is at 12.00 also filtering / dulling, ultimately thickening the sound the Erbe-verb is fantastic.

Clouds is processing Loquelic, creating random grains and adding reverb

DPO - is used for the kick created using Streams as a VCA / Envelope combo Exponential envelope and a second envelope from MATHS to modulate the exponential FM input on the DPO for a sharp descending pitch.

DPO second oscillator FINAL output is used to create the percussion, fm sent from VCO-A to VCO-B FM index all the way up, Exponential attenuator full lock, linear at 10.00. Sent to Dual looping delay, the DLD's parameters are modulated by the ER-101.

Braids is used to create a snare, using its internal envelopes / modulation. Also sent to the DLD, delay time is modulated from really short times to slower, to create fills.

Belgrad is filtering the Loquelic Iteritas' more digital harmonics out. with 2 different resonant peaks, allowing me to pick out the harmonics I thought sounded best.

Modular Jam #33 - Beatstep Pro

Published on Jun 6, 2016 DivKidVideo

"Just a quick edit from some video I captured when I first got my beatstep pro. Which is mainly my drum sequencer at the minute.

PATCH NOTES

Beatstep pro is providing triggers for the drums and also using a spare drum trigger out providing the swung clock for the patch.

Drums

The HexInverter Electronique Mutant Drums providing the backbone for the jam with the Mutant Bassdrum, Clap, Hats and Mutant Machine all mixed within the Mutant Hot Glue.

Bass

Sequenced by the Audio Damage Sequencer 1 with ratchets and accents the sound source is the Sputnik Modular Dual Oscillator. Timbre and waveshaping modulation comes from two of the modulators in the Sequencer 1. Both in LFO mode one set to a 7 step length sine wave and one a 16th note random stepped LFO. The gate out on the Sequencer 1 is triggering the Sputnik Modular Quad Function Generator which also modulates the Dual oscillator and also the Sputnik Modular Quad VCF/VCA (LPG!). This then going into the Make Noise Erbe Verb for some basic reverb FX with plenty of hands on control for jamming with.

Arpeggio

This is Mutable Instruments Braids going into Mutable Instruments Streams for basic envelope control over the on board analogue VCF and VCA. The sequence comes from the sample and hold on the SSF Ultra-Random Analog. This is then quantized by the ADDAC 207 Quantizer. Playing with the level of internal noise of the Ultra-Random Analog and the active notes on the quantizer we can get a moving and changing random arpeggio.

FX

Sputnik Modular Dual Four Tap Delay and Crossfader is taking the square wave output of the Dual Oscillator (as opposed to the waveshaped out we hear for the bassline) which is first processed through the low pass gate in the patch. Feedback on the delay is set up with the Mutable Instruments Ripples filter in band pass mode also taking LFO modulation from the sequencer 1. Patching in feedback on the delays gives us another element to modulate with a phaser style swirling sound from the LFO on the filter as well as some reflective delay sounds."

New Ornaments & Crimes Polymorphic CV Generator Euorack Module

Uploaded on Apr 23, 2016 Tim Churches

"This video provides a very brief overview of version 1.0.0 of the Ornaments & Crimes firmware for the ornament & Crime DIY eurorack synthesier module by Max Stadler (mxmxmx). This enhanced firmware has been a collaborative effort by Patrick Dowling (pld) (who did a great deal of the work, and all the heavy lifting), Max Stadler (mxmxmx) (who designed the module and wrote all of the original firmware) and Tim Churches (bennelong.bicyclist)."

via GitHub:

"ornaments & crimes is a collaborative project by Patrick Dowling (aka pld), mxmxmx and Tim Churches (aka bennelong.bicyclist) (though mostly by pld and bennelong.bicyclist). it (considerably) extends the original firmware for the o_C / ASR eurorack module, designed by mxmxmx."

And additional details via mxmxmx:

"it can now be found here. and it runs on the (almost) eponymous module.

huge props go to pld and bennelong.bicyclist who've basically rewritten the firmware from scratch and mutated the thing beyond recognition, both in terms of functionality and performance.

everything is, of course, open source and we've even made a little schematic for you (NB: post-hoc). speaking of: special thanks must also to the ever-generous olivier gillet, on whose code much of this new functionality builds. (and the hardware, too, gradually gravitated towards being fairly MI-esque). not so much the user interface, which does everything the one-knob-per-function doctrine interdicts: displays, menus, encoders ... the payoff is that you get a polymorphic module that can serve several functions somewhat more transparently:

there is still a improved and enhanced quantising ASR (analogue shift register) function in ornaments & crimes, now named CopierMaschine, but several other "apps" have been added. these "apps" are selectable on-the-fly, without having to reboot the module or power-cycle.

The apps currently available in ornaments & crimes are:

Angular Distance Amplifier - Mutable Instruments Elements

Published on Apr 22, 2016 A Box In The Sea

"All sounds are made via the Mutable Instruments Elements and parallel processed through Twin MI Clouds, Mannequins Sisters, guitar pedals - Echo Degrader, Take 5, El Capistan, Big sky and Afterneath . The gates and all modulation are self generating. The Octatrack is sending clock to Tempi to control all modulation including the Tempi itself. I'm sampling into the Octatrack all throughout the piece and jumping back and forth between the modular and the OT to constantly mix in and out all parallel streams."

The Fossils of Intention | Eurorack Ambient

Published on Jan 30, 2016 r beny

"An ambient piece for my Eurorack modular system. All sounds/effects from the rack.

Patch Notes:

Piano Sound: Mutable Instruments Rings (in symphathetic string mode) being excited by Mutable Instruments Braids in "CLOU", running through a Make Noise MMG and a Laurentide Synthworks VG2. The VG is getting a quick exponential envelope from a Make Noise Maths. Rings going through a Mutable Instruments Clouds in granular mode with audio-rate random modulation from a Qu-Bit NanoRand. As the song progresses, I slowly make the envelopes on Maths longer and turn up the wet/dry mix on Clouds. Rings is also multed to an Alright Devices Chronoblob delay.

Lead: A second Mutable Instruments Rings (also in symphathetic string mode) being excited by the same Mutable Instruments Braids in "CLOU", except that the signal is multed straight from the MMG bypassing the LPG for a constant drone. This Rings is going into a Mannequins Three Sisters filter into the high input and output and then into a Make Noise ErbeVerb.

Bass: Make Noise STO running into a second Mutable Instruments Clouds in looping delay mode on the lowest quality setting and a Mutable Instruments Streams in compressor mode.

All sequencing provided by a Korg Electribe 2 via a Vermona QMi2 MIDI to CV module."
