Modor NF-1 Keyboard

via Modor Music

"Will there ever be a keyboard NF-1? Well, a little time ago we built a 44-key plastic casing prototype. And it works, but it has some flaws...

A keyboard version will need to be strong and robust, even more than a desktop synth. The keyboard mechanics can be delivered more or less complete by Fatar, that's not a problem. And the knobs and buttons can be the same as on the desktop NF-1. But there's no simple off-the-shelf thing you can use as pitch bend/modwheel. 3D printing didn't give the necessary precision, and plastic moulding becomes prohibitively expensive for smaller production numbers. Or should we make a version without PB/modwheel... ?

Also, if we use the same 2mm steel casing as for the NF-1, things may become really heavy... So we would need really strong packaging to avoid shipping damage, and shipping may become very delicate and expensive... Or maybe a standard included dedicated flightcase?

So, for now the keyboard NF-1 is on hold. It seems us too much of risk, and by trying to reduce the risk, the keyboard NF-1 would get too expensive. But never say never, maybe a very limited edition one day? Share us your thoughts... !

A little secret... Our keyboard prototype has CV/Gate inputs :-)'"

Modor Microtonal Upgrade v 013

via Modor where you'll find some demos.

"There's a new upgrade for the NF-1 (OS013) and NF-1m (OS006), ready for download at our download page! What's new?

The Chorus/Flanger effect unit finally works entirely stable under heavy feedback, positive or negative. About time! No more ugly digital spikes or speaker-damaging noise bursts, you can safely turn up the feedback and enjoy comb filter self oscillation.

The active Osc and Env selection get saved with the patch (NF-1 only)

Osc phase randomisation can be selected. Before (and still the default), all oscillator phases got reset at the beginning of a note. Now they can be randomized to get some more 'life' in some patches. That's more or less the same as so-called free running oscillators

You can set your NF-1(m) to start from the last loaded/saved patch at bootup. The default is still bootup with the empty init patch, but you can alter this in the System Settings menu

And last but very, very far from least, Modor goes microtonal!

Microtonal? Oh boy ... That ear-torturing stuff for freaks and nerds desperately seeking for something to sound distinct. Really, do we need to go that way?

Well, not entirely ... There's much more than you might think. Listen to the following examples of a major C chord. First in standard 12-tone equal temperament tuning (most synthesizers' basic tuning), and then in Just Intonation. Quite a difference, isn't it? Does the first one have some chorus effect on it? No, not at all...

Most synths (and many, many other instruments) use 12-EDO (12 Equal Divisions of the Octave), also known as (12-tone) equal temperament. The octave just gets divided in 12 equal parts, the 12 semitones of the octave. But that's actually only an approximation of real harmony. On a just intonated chord like the one above, the three notes C-E-G have their frequencies in proportion 4/4 - 5/4 - 6/4, or 1 - 1,25 - 1,5. On an equal tempered chord that's 1 - 1,25992105 - 1,498307077. So that's only an approximation, the three notes are sounding close, but keep slightly beating. In a just intonated chord, the three notes grab each other close and sound together as an integer unity. Both versions do sound well, but you can't say they're equal!"

New Modor NF-1 8 Voice Hardware Synth Now Available

You might remember the Modor NF-1 from the announcement post here. It looks like the NF-1 is now available for order at € 995 (roughly $1090).

A quick recap:

"The Modor NF-1 synth is a digital DSP synth very comparable to the classic Virtual Analog synths, but Modor is moving further on from this point. We use the classic structure of VA-synths, with oscillators, filters and effects, with parameters that can be modulated using LFO's and envelopes. But every element has been retought and reinvented. In a digital way.

The NF-1 has a classic 12dB/oct resonant filter, but we are also giving it a versatile formant filter, never seen in hardware before! It does make classic sawtooth waves, but we're also including a lot of other brand new modulatable noisy waveforms! It has a classic delay effect, but we make every parameter editable to give way to special unexpected effect types! And so on ..."

New MODOR NF-1 Demo

Published on Jun 12, 2015 obscure wave music obscure wave music

"NF-1 demo by obscure wave music. All sounds are only the NF-1, except the drums, a drum loop from Reason . Multitracked in Reason, no fx used except for some mastering tools. All parts played live, with tweaking of the NF-1, mainly the filters and the delay feedback. The NF-1 is a brilliant psychedelic machine !"

Yes, it's digital and we're proud of it! We are making a very hands-on, laborious new synth having plenty of knobs and switches right on top of it to shape any sound parameter thats in it. Nothing to look up in menus!"

Modor NF 1 Digital Polyphonic Synthesizer Demonstration song

Published on Aug 13, 2015 David Morley

"A tune made entirely on the Modor NF-1 Synthesizer. The only extra stuff was a Reverb. Not aiming for a Grammy with it (pretty chilled and typical) but hopefully it shows somewhat how flexible the Modor NF-1 is. The Modor NF-1 is a Digital Polyphonic (8 voice) synthesiser from Belgium. It has 3 Oscillators which have classic analogue style waveforms as well as Additive and FM synthesis. A multimode filter, a Formant filter, 4 envelopes, 3 LFO etc etc. It;s a very powerful synth.. In another video I will go through the features one by one. Hope you enjoy."

exept bass drum, snare drum and hi-hat which are the Kong drum designer in Reason. Multitracked in Reason, no additional effects used. A bit noisy at times, the input levels were not set up very well....Too lazy to start anew !!

Modor - New Eurorack Formant Filter // Synthfest 2017

Published on Nov 25, 2017 DivKidVideo

"I think this went largely missed by many at Synthfest but the new Modor eurorack modular formant filter sounded great! Stereo formant filter coming from their NF-1 synth in modular ... yes please! Looking forward to seeing how this develops."

via Modor Music

"We received the question quite a few times: 'When will you break up the Modor NF-1 in Eurorack pieces? Well, we 're not going to build Eurorack modules for everything there is in the NF-1, but we tought our formant filter is that special and unique we can't leave the modular world deprived of it ... :-)

So, here we are: Modor's Formant Filter in a Eurorack Module!

Modor's Formant Filter is a special filter that does a kind of 'vowel morphing' between three vowels. The big central FORMANT control is responsible for that, and on the Eurorack module there's of course a CV control (with attenuation) on this parameter.

You can imagine a formant filter as a set of parallel bandpass filters, picking up and amplifying a set of small frequency bands. For example, with these frequency bands around 750Hz, 1200Hz and 2800Hz, you get the sound of an 'A'. So far, nothing special. There are more formant filters around composed of a set of parallel bandpass filters.

It gets more interesting when you're able to 'morph' between different sets of those formant frequencies. Behind the central FORMANT control, there are 3 of those sets of frequencies. One at full left, one in the middle, and one fully right. So you can for example morph between A-E-O. Or U-I-E. Or AO-UI-EU. Or ...

That's what it does: morphing between different sets of formant frequencies, and that's why it sounds a lot more genuine vowelish than many other static bandpass combinators.

There are 10 preset vowels, that can be selected with the VOWEL button: A-E-O-I-OE-U-EI-EU-AO-U-UI. The vowels of the Dutch language... :-)

The 1-2-3-4 controls on top give you the possibility of composing your own vowels by manually adjusting the frequency bands."
