Bastl Instruments NEWS at Superbooth 2017

via Bastl Instruments:

"We have a lot of exciting news to share at Superbooth 2017 - finally our flagship effects processor Thyme comes to life! Peter Edwards a.k.a. Casper Electronics will show his new invention: a portable, experimental synth called the softPop. We have a new eurorack module drum pad interface Kong. Dude is a new portable mixer with concept of modularity in mind. We are starting to offer our trusty microGranny as a DIY kit and we will also show the aluminum panel designs for our Eurorack line of modules for the first time. And as the Bastl community is growing we have more updates in the wide range of activities that we make, too.

The Thyme effects processor [see here for a Superbooth video] will finally scrap off its vaporware label at Superbooth, where we will give the first public demo in two years after announcing an early prototype back in 2015. The Thyme is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With a lot of parameters at hand it enables the exploration of all the time based effects and the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories! Each of the 9 different parameters (Tape Speed, Delay Coarse & Fine, Feedback, Filter, extra heads Spacing and Levels, Dry Wet Mix and Volume) has a dedicated and very flexible modulation source - called the Robot - which can be phased out differently for left and right channel to create psychedelic new sound effects. The Robot can either be an LFO with many different waveshapes, external CV source or an envelope follower to enable effects reacting to dynamics. On top of everything there are 8 buttons to select a preset and those presets can be sequenced by a built in meta sequencer. The Thyme is ready for production and pricing and availability will be announced in May 2017.

softPop is a playfully organic, semi-modular light and sound synthesizer with wide variety of sounds: from random dripping water pops to heavy subtractive basslines. Its fully analog core consisting of heavily feedbacked system of dual triangle-core oscillator, state variable filter and sample and hold is played through an intuitive interface of 6 faders that provides countless combinations which can be explored by anyone. It can also process external audio thru the filter while using the envelope follower to intuitively synchronise to the incoming signal. The analog soul is enhanced by a quantize feature (auto-tune) and pattern generator with two memories A and B. For adventurous and courageous souls there is a secret chamber in the back for hacking & modding. We will launch the pre-orders in a couple of weeks with price somewhere below 300 eur.

KONG

The expressiveness of a drumming performance and the freedom of a eurorack modular synthesizer finally have a dedicated interface! Kong is a dual drumpad interface that amplifies the drumpad signal and converts it to trigger and velocity CV signals. The Gain knob helps to amplify signal from any drumpad and serves as a sensitivity setting for the velocity, too. The whole architecture is fully analog and the Velocity CV signal is generated by sample and hold circuit with extremely low drift which makes it perfect for controlling crazy patches by hitting a bunch of drumpads. Kong is available NOW for preorder from noise.kitchen for 109 eur without tax. Preorders will ship in June.

Dude is a portable battery operated 5 channel audio mixer with mini jack inputs and output. Each channel has a dedicated mute button and up to +20dB gain to boost weak signals or saturate line level signals. It is a monophonic mixer but can drive your headphones and therefore its perfect for small portable rigs or submixes on stage. It runs on four AA batteries (or external powersupply) and it is almost as small as its batterypack. Because each channel has enough gain that it can be turned into tone generator by feeding the output back to an input thru a passive eq and other simple circuits. The first batch of the Dude is available NOW from noise.kitchen for 75 eur excluding tax.

microGranny2 as a DIY kit

We have announced the microGranny2 about 3 years ago and it still is very popular machine. After several updates we can finally offer it as a DIY kit! microGranny is a granular sampler with built in microphone that operates samples on a microSD card. It is available NOW from noise.kitchen for 130 eur excl. tax!

Aluminum panels for Eurorack modules

We dedicated a lot of effort to make our wooden panels look and feel great. Now after quite some requests from people we finally found a manufacturing partner for the aluminium panels that meets our high expectations. We are using silkscreen printing in between of the anodizing phases. This method bakes the color perfectly into the material making the colour full, rich and yet very durable!

The modules will be gradually available from selected retailers from 1st May 2017. Note: the wooden panel version of the modules will NOT be discontinued

Further updates from the Bastl Community

● We have made a zine about the Bastl community which will be presented and distributed on demand at the Superbooth 2017 and further
● Noise Kitchen Synthfest: Connecting Distant Patchpoints organized by Bastl and partners takes place in the coming days after Superbooth 2017 in 4 different cities: 23.4. Berlin, 26.4. Praha, 28.4. Brno, 29.4. Wien . Join us there <3 http://noise.kitchen/synth-fest-2017/
● Two new films were published about the Bastl community: Cuckoo’s in depth documentary & Electronic Beats INSIDE: Bastl Instruments
● 2 recent releases on our Nona Records label: NONA004 Family Matter, NONA005 607f/s by ~emb http://www.nona-rec.com/
● We are opening new coffee store front called Koffein at Panská 13, Brno, Czech Republic. Learn how to make great coffee at home, enjoy the best coffee made by Valentino at Bastl and patch a modular synth in the meantime!
● Project 60 knobs is getting finalised
● Due to the recent shift of the Czech Currency (CZK) and rising living costs in the Czech Republic we
will be adjusting our international prices accordingly from 1st May"

SoftPop 2 in Session | Bastl x Casper | Noise Kitchen

video upload by NOISE KITCHEN

"Bastl Instruments x Casper Electronics' SoftPopII SP2 is live: 'a radical subtractive synth under the influence of unconventional digital control. It’s a rare beast that excels at both melody and noise in equal measure, ranging from bassline bangers, angelic chord progressions, distorted beats, and water droplets. It can even process inbound audio through the filter and VCA.'

Pretty words, but how does it actually sound in a live setting? In this video by Noise Kitchen staff Lotus Wash and Niels Aras we get right to it — two Bastl Instruments x Casper Electronics SoftPop SP2, one Eowave Quadrantid Swarm, one Moog DFAM, processed through Valhalla Supermassive, nothing else.

Over the 13 minutes multiple different dimensions of sound are explored, from punchy acid rollers and psychedelic slow-motion dancefloor beats, Niels Aras & Lotus Wash guide you through how the SoftPopII can be weaponised for the rave, away from the more ambient electronica applications of the synth heard elsewhere.

Filming & Editing by Adam Kořínek & Vít Linek — many thanks!"

Bastl Introduces New Product at Moogfest - The bitRanger Handheld Patchable Analog Logic Computer

Published on May 18, 2016 Bastl Instruments

"Bastl Instruments introduces a new product at the Moogfest: the bitRanger designed by Peter Edwards a.k.a. Casper Electronics who moved recently to Brno, Czech Republic to join forces with the Bastl crew. The bitRanger brings together the legacy of the previous products debuted at Moogfest the Werkstatt and the Pocket Operator and bridges both realms of these instruments together.

The bitRanger is a patchable analog logic computer which sculpts sonic worlds ranging from data noise to melodic arpeggios. While being a handheld standalone synth it is also right at home in the music studio. Extensive connectivity makes it so flexible that it can connect to almost anything: CV control its unique sound, sync it with drum machines and sequencers or use it as an algorithmic CV / GATE pattern generator.

The patchbay of the bitRanger (in the same style as the Werkstatt) is a place for exploration where you can simply connect outputs to inputs to see what happens. This can be done methodically or with complete experimental abandon. Go nuts! Battery Power and a built in speaker make the bitRanger totally portable. Tweak it's 4 knobs, 8 switches and more than 100 patch points in the woods, on the beach, on a train and in the studio.

There are only 3 places in the world where you can try out the bitRanger: the Moogfest in Durham NC, freshly opened store of Bastl & Casper Detective Squad in Brooklyn NY and original Bastl store Noise Kitchen in Brno Czech Republic. The first limited edition will be available for sale at Moogfest for special price 259 USD.

BitRanger is available at noise.kitchen website for 222 EUR excluding TAX and will be shipping in June."

Jožka Říhák plays the ELEKTRON - 83 drum machine / synth

Published on Jun 15, 2015 Peter Kirn

"From Brno, CZ - Synth Fest 2015, hosted by Bastl Instruments / Noise Kitchen. A one-of-a-kind instrument from Communist-era Czechoslovakia."

This is the ELEKTRON - 83 posted here. We now have some additional details on this unique system via CDM: "The Elektron-83 is the creation of Jožka Říhák, legendary in Moravia as a genius electronic instrument builder. His Syntezátor – 83 Unisono went into production, but the ELEKTRON – 83 is one of a kind. We got a live performance and demo/ explanation of the creation at Brno’s Synth Fest hosted by Bastl Instruments and their new Noise Kitchen shop in the Czech Republic.

And this thing is simply amazing.

First of all, it does so much that Jožka – now into his 70s and mostly retired from playing – was worried he wouldn’t remember everything he’d made it do. It’s really an early rendition of a workstation/arranger keyboard. It’s part organ, an analog synthesizer with loads of timbral variations. It’s also part drum machine, with a rich analog sound set that might be as at home accompanying techno as playing Czech folks songs. And it’s part effects box, with various additional processing onboard or accessible via a set of stompboxes he also designed.

It’s when you look closer at the design that you begin to realize how deep the rabbit hole goes. Some of the controls are obvious: okay, those are drawbars. But then the drawbars are augmented with switches, and knobs, and combinations of switches “unlock” other features, and then you find more knobs and more switches augmenting the other knobs and switches. If there was a spare bit of panel, he added a control. If he ran out of space for controls, he kept adding functionality anyway, by using combinations of additional switches and knobs..."

Introducing The Bastl Midilooper

Bastl Instruments

Price excluding tax: 239€ - comes to $283.44. Pics with press release below.

"Midilooper is a device that listens to MIDI messages (control information about notes, dynamics and other parameters) and loops them in a similar way an audio looper would loop pieces of audio. However, loops of MIDI messages remain in the control domain, which means a lot of other processes can happen on top of them - timbre modulation, envelope adjustments etc.

"Bastl is more than excited to announce the Midilooper! Rather than being a sequencer, it is a device inspired by audio looper style workflow with a really fast, performative, single gesture interface.
Looping is a blazing fast way of music making and looping in the control signal domain is a key feature that allows for all remaining parameters of your device to be tweaked and modulated on top of the looped sequence... or MIDI CC looped!

Midilooper has been in development for over 3 years and several iterations of the control interface and connectivity have been extensively tested within the context of a live performance. It has the ability to bring a live setup or a studio to new life and make you explore your gear in a refreshing, hands–on manner.
Midilooper can be synchronised to MIDI or analog clock and it can also run on its own (tap tempo/free running). It has 3 voices that can each be assigned to a different MIDI channel, allowing it to control and loop 3 individual units of gear. Each voice can be individually recorded, muted, overdubbed, or cleared.

Midilooper also offers some basic processing of the recorded information: transposition, velocity locking and shifting, quantisation, shuffle, humanisation (random variations of velocity), adjusting the length of the loop, or doubling and halving of playback speed.

In addition, it features CV and trigger inputs for seamless integration with modular synths: reset, retrigger, velocity, and transpose. It can also be controlled with foot pedals.

Stay tuned to Bastl Instruments YouTube channel for more walkthrough videos. Price excluding tax: 239€
Shipping to dealers now.

Features:
• 3 independent voices (each has MIDI channel assigned) • overdub/overwrite
• transpose mode
• octave transpose
• quantize, velocity lock, shuffle, humanize • odd looplengths, time stretch

"dual line level audio click to modular clock / trigger converter"

"We are happy to announce our new product: the KLIK!

It is a synchronisation device that enables the user to make rock solid analog sync signals from their computer and hardware synths. The KLIK revives the old-school sync technique of using audio tracks for synchronisation purposes. Record your synths exactly on the grid into your DAW while compensating for the latency of your sound card. Jam between your computer and your HW in a really tight sync and add groove to your clock.

We have collaborated with Bitwig and Irrupt Audio to make the KLIK as powerful and easy to use as possible and are presenting this collaboration for the first time at NAMM 2017. Check us out and try the KLIK at booth C4911 !

The new version of Bitwig (2.0) adds a HW CLOCK device which we collaborated on to use with the KLIK!

Please note that the KLIK is designed to only transmit clock / trigger information. Its output is either low or high 0 or 5V. It doesn't output continuous CV signals.

Pricing and availability
Price is 49 eur excluding tax (approx 59 eur including tax)
The KLIK is available for preorder NOW at Noise.kitchen and first units will start shipping in March 2017"

Bastl Instruments New Modules, Superbooth, Thyme is Shipping & Further Updates

via Bastl Instruments

"We are really excited to share some news from Superbooth! Come to see us and our booth E240. First we are announcing two new eurorack modules - the Timber - dual waveshaper and the 1983 - MIDI to CV interface from the future with creative voice allocation and automatic tuning capabilities. Peter Edwards a.k.a. Casper Electronics will preview another Bastl collaboration on his forthcoming product line of Eurorack modules! We are finally shipping THYME effects processors and we have couple of new music releases at our Nona Records and the week after Superbooth we are hosting a touring festival from Prague to Brno.

Timber - dual waveform lumberjack is a flexible wave shaping module that can produce rich timbres by adding harmonics to any signal. It has 2 different wave shaping circuits that are controlled by the same parameters. Both shapers are classic Serge inspired designs that have been heavily modified and enhanced with a voltage controlled crossfader. The fader can be used to fade between the two shapers or either one and the clean input signal. Video introduction

1983 is a polyphonic MIDI to CV interface with creative voice allocation and automatic tuning capabilities. There are 4 channels of CV and GATE outputs that can be configured to various layouts. Each channel is also able to LISTEN to the simple waveform of an oscillator and with a single press of the TUNE button it magically makes everything play in tune. The UPDATE and WINDOW inputs allow creative mangling of the voice allocation and open harmonic content to be animated in modular environment. The TRANSPOSE and GLIDE jacks open up the module for further creativity.

New product line of eurorack modules is coming soon from Casper Electronics. At Superbooth Peter Edwards will preview his prototypes which are highly influenced by his signature gestural performances using experimental mixer techniques with loads of feedback and overdrive. Now with everything under complex CV control and fine-tuned for modular environments.

After a long wait we are finally shipping our beloved THYME - The Robot Operated Digital Tape Machine. This certainly is the most advanced instrument we have ever created and it opens huge sonic possibilities of real-time sound manipulation. We have released a new video.

Pricing and availability:

- Timber - available now at noise.kitchen for 170 EUR excl. tax , currently in production, ships in July 2018

- 1983 - available latest in September 2018 with price around 250 EUR excl. tax

New Bastl Expander Modules Announced at #knobcon

If you are at Knobcon this weekend, be sure to check them out. Bastl Instruments is in the house.

"Slim Fit line of 5 new eurorack expanders / modules by Bastl Instruments

We are happy to announce 4 new slim expanders and 1 module to enrich the line of our eurorack modules. The expanders enhance functionality of existing modules and and new fascinating features.

SPA - the grandPa expander adds CV input for nearly all parameters of your grandPa granular sampler module.

CV Trinity Expander pairs with CV Trinity - the 6 channel modulation source and adds independent RESET / RETRIGGER inputs for each channel.

Knit Rider Expander pairs with Knit Rider trigger sequencer and adds clock output and reset jack. The reset acts as input or output depending whether the sequencer is master or slave. There is also a 3 way passive multiple and a clock inverter as part of the module.

Solenoid Expander pairs with Solenoid 4 channel motor driving module and adds independent CV input for each channel to set the output pulse width which results into the way how hard the solenoid can hit the object - thus velocity control.

Wackel Kontakt - this unique 1HP module emulates broken contact or cable in form of a 4 way passive multiple! You can calibrate it to obtain the right level of broken-ness. It is not only a random type of generator to break your patches, it is also very useful as a CABLE HANGER or as 1HP blank panel. And most of all… it is the ONE module you would love to talk about with your friends!

Modules are available now from http://noise.kitchen/ and soon from other retailers. Prices exclude tax.

SPA - 5HP grandPa CV input expander - 82 EUR
CV Trinity Expander - 2 HP reset / retrigger expander - 49 EUR
Knit Rider Expander - 2 HP clock and reset expander 49 EUR
Solenoid Expander - 2 HP CV input expander - 49 EUR
Wackel Kontakt - 1HP broken contact emulator - 8 EUR"
