Yamaha Soundmondo Social Sound-Sharing Site for Reface Synths

Yamaha has launched Soundmondo, a resource site for Reface synth owners to share their patches. The following is the official press release:

"Soundmondo Social Sound-Sharing Website Lets reface Users Inspire and be Inspired Any Place, Any Time

BUENA PARK, Calif. (January 8, 2016) — Yamaha has officially launched Soundmondo (www.soundmondo.com), a groundbreaking social sound-sharing website for sharing reface Mobile Mini Keyboard sounds.

Soundmondo is one of the first sites to implement WebMIDI, a new W3C (API) pioneered by Google in Chrome (versions 43 and later) earlier this year. WebMIDI connects MIDI devices to the Internet allowing musical instruments to play online synthesizers, as well as save or share sounds with Soundmondo. Because WebMIDI is part of Chrome, Soundmondo works on Mac, PC and Android devices.

The Yamaha reface Mobile Mini Keyboards are the first instruments to work with Soundmondo. Featuring four models, each with a unique tone generator and control panel, reface empowers users with an easy way to store, recall, organize and share their sounds.

'Soundmondo is social sound-sharing for synthesizers,' said Nate Tschetter, marketing manager, Music Production, Yamaha Corporation of America. 'Back in the day, synthesizers had patch sheets where sound re-creation was a manual process of duplicating settings from a printed diagram. Soundmondo instantly sends the sound to your instrument and visually shows you how to re-create it. It’s like having your own personal synth programmer on call 24/7.'

Saving sounds on Soundmondo is easy. Once the user connects their instrument and sets up an account, they simply hit CREATE and give their sound a name, a description and tags. They can also add a YouTube video and SoundCloud audio to really show off their sound.

According to Tschetter, the real fun comes in checking out sounds created by other Soundmondo users. BROWSE shows all available sounds (currently over 1,200), and the user can refine their search using tags. Once the user finds a sound they might like, they simply click on it and hit SYNC. This will send the sound to their connected reface AND show them how to move the controls to recreate the sound.

For reface DX users, there’s an added bonus: a full editor showing all parameters with full navigation and editing using a computer keyboard.

Yamaha reface Mobile Mini Keyboards, introduced this past summer, feature built-in speakers and battery power along with interactive controls, incredible keyboard feel and great sound for a truly pro instrument that lets musicians create their sound any place, any time.

Your Sound. Any Place, Any Time

Published on Jul 3, 2015 Yamaha Corporation of America

And the press release, full details & a ton of pics are in.

"NASHVILLE (July 9, 2015)—Yamaha today introduced the new reface Mobile Mini Keyboards, portable yet powerful sounding keyboards that descend from a distinguished pedigree.

Why should guitarists have all the fun playing outdoors or anytime inspiration strikes? Even for beginners, these boards are fun to play because there are no deep, complicated control panels to learn: turning knobs and sliding faders brings an instant change in sound and players are able to create their own tones for a fun, tactile experience.

Building on Yamaha’s 40-year heritage of creating some of the most heralded and renowned electronic keyboards in music history, reface reimagines the interface of four classic Yamaha instruments – some of which are difficult to find in the vintage market and weigh too much to carry around. The new series offers thick, booming sound, built-in speakers, 37 keys with professional-grade HQ-Mini action (derived from the flagship Motif XF professional synthesizer) and battery-powered portability for making music on the go. But more than mere travel companions, these versatile keyboards connect with external speakers, smartphones, tablets, MIDI devices and computers for use on stage and in the studio.

reface DX draws its inspiration from the iconic DX7, which debuted in 1983 and became the first commercially successful electronic keyboard used extensively by a multitude of bands throughout the decade and beyond, including Toto (“Africa”), the Doobie Brothers (“What a Fool Believes”) and the theme from “Beverly Hills Cop” (Axel F”). With the press of a button, the reface DX changes from retro-80s tones to cutting-edge modern sounds perfect for EDM. A new Multi-Touch Control interface makes it easy to customize your sound with the powerful FM (frequency modulation) synthesis engine. The instrument includes 8-note polyphony, 32 Voice Memories and a backlit display.

reface YC reimagines the YC Yamaha Combo organs, introduced in the late 1960s and used by Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and others. The YC offers all the expression of drawbars, rotary speaker, percussion and effects. It includes five retro organ sounds—ranging from tonewheel to transistor to the original Yamaha Combo organ—and 128-note polyphony.

reface CP redesigns the Combo Piano, launched in 1975 and ubiquitous on stages during that era. The sound enhanced the work of Keane, U2, Genesis, Billy Joel and more. The CP model features six electric piano sounds including tine, reed, clav, toy and CP80 plus direct control of six different 1970s-style effects built into its retro-chic design. It also includes a sustain pedal input with a half-damper response and 128-note polyphony.

reface CS rekindles the legacy of the CS-series Control Synthesizers, introduced in 1976 and played by Vangelis, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, among others. Offering 8-note polyphony, reface CS uses virtual analog synth technology and five flexible oscillator modules to create a wide variety of complex sounds from analog to digital.

reface features a 'one to one' control scheme, meaning the panel controls perfectly match the tone generator for direct sound creation and musical inspiration.

'reface offers high-quality touch, tone, interface and superior design at an affordable price,' said Nate Tschetter, marketing manager, Music Production, Yamaha Corporation of America. 'These inspiring, horizon-expanding instruments are fun to play and let keyboard players take their music anywhere.'

The reface YC, CP, CS and DX mobile mini keyboards (MSRP: $799) will ship in September 2015.

I Dream Of Wires Coming to VOD & Worldwide DVD Release - Berlin Screening with Morton Subotnick

I Dream of Wires is coming to video on demand via iTunes and Vimeo on Demand on August 10. The DVD will be released in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America on July 31st. To celebrate, there will be a screening in Berlin with a performance and Q&A session with Morton Subotnick.

"To celebrate the August VOD/DVD release of I DREAM OF WIRES, the definitive and acclaimed electronic music documentary about the rise, fall and rebirth of the modular synthesizer, MONODUO FILMS presents a very special screening and electronic music event in Berlin.

On Tuesday July 28, I DREAM OF WIRES will celebrate it’s release premiere in Berlin, followed by a live performance by the legendary Morton Subotnick. Taking place at Babylon Kino Berlin, Morton Subotnick, accompanied by his frequent collaborator, video artist Lillevan, presents FROM SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON TO A SKY OF CLOUDLESS SULFUR REVISITED: VI, marking Subotnick’s first live appearance in Germany since 2011.

Morton Subotnick’s contributions to electronic music cannot be overstated; as a founding member of the seminal San Francisco Tape Music Center, Subotnick played a key role in the conception and development of the influential Buchla modular synthesizer. Armed with his Buchla, Subotnick composed and recorded the landmark 1967 LP, SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON, widely regarded as a modern classic, and the first all-electronic music album to connect with popular music audiences. In 2010 SILVER APPLES was selected for the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress. Long considered one of the essential milestones in electronic music, it continues to have great effect on later generations of artists.

Subotnick’s interview in I DREAM OF WIRES, alongside interviews with influential electronic musicians including Trent Reznor, Gary Numan, Carl Craig, James Holden and Vince Clarke, is pivotal in the film, and provides a revealing insight into this true electronic music visionary.

The film will be introduced by I DREAM OF WIRES' director Robert Fantinatto, who will also join Morton Subotnick for a post-screening Q&A. This July 28 event is more than just a celebration of the modular synthesizer; it’s a rare opportunity to learn and experience the historical roots of electronic music.

I Dream Of Wires is an independent documentary about the history, demise and resurgence of the modular synthesizer - exploring the dreams and obsessions of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this fascinating, esoteric electronic music machine. Over 100 inventors, musicians and enthusiasts are interviewed about their relationship with the modular synthesizer - for many, it’s an all-consuming passion.

Through tracing the history of the modular synthesizer, I Dream Of Wires also outlines the history of electronic music as a whole, from its very beginnings at the dawn of the electric age. The film provides a fascinating look at how technology has shaped the electronic music landscape. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument - it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bona fide subculture.

Interviews include:
- Legendary electronic musicians: Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Morton Subotnick, Gary Numan, Vince Clarke (Erasure).
- Contemporary dance & electronica artists: Carl Craig, James Holden, Legowelt.
- Synthesizer manufacturers: Doepfer, Modcan, Make Noise.

MOTU Releases The Bob Moog Foundation Encore Soundbank

via The Bob Moog Foundation:

"Cambridge, MA - May 19, 2015...

MOTU and the Bob Moog Foundation announce the release of the Bob Moog Foundation Encore Soundbank, a new and exciting collection of instrument and percussion sounds produced in commemoration of Bob Moog's 81st Birthday, coming up on May 23rd. In a charitable effort to raise funds for the foundation, over twenty legendary synthesists and renowned sound designers donated original samples to assist with the creation of the sound library, which offers over 2 GB of material. Now available for purchase from the MOTU website (www.motu.com/moog-encore), the library is fully compatible with any host software on Mac or Windows that supports virtual instruments, including popular DAW software such as Ableton Live, Avid Pro Tools, Cockos Reaper, and MOTU Digital Performer. All proceeds from the sale of the Encore Soundbank will benefit the Bob Moog Foundation.

The library ships in the form of a UVI soundbank that can be loaded into the cross-platform, universally compatible UVI Workstation virtual instrument player, available for free download from uvi.net. The library can also be loaded into MOTU's MachFive 3 sampler for side-by-side integration with other MachFive-compatible soundbanks. Most of the 200+ Encore Soundbank presets are scripted to include vintage Moog-style filter and envelope controls.

MOTU is proud to support the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog and the Bob Moog Foundation's educational and historic preservation work through the funding generated by the sales of the Encore Soundbank. The following artists generously contributed to this project: Vince Clark, Al Kooper, Jordan Rudess, Suzanne Ciani, Larry Fast, Tangerine Dream (Edgar Froese / Thorsten Quaeschning), Goldfrapp (Will Gregory), Kevin Antunes, Adam Holzman, Erik Norlander, Peter Gorges, Amin Bhatia, CJ Vanston, Drew Neumann, Kevin Lamb, Dave Spiers, Jack Hotop, Jerry Kovarsky, Kent Spong, Klaus Peter Rausch, Taiho Yamada, Michael Koehler, Chris Cox, 'Magic' Dave Roberts, Marty Cutler, Marc Doty and I Monster (Dean Honer / Jerrod Gosling).

The soundbank is released in special remembrance of Edgar Froese, who enthusiastically donated sounds for the project, but passed away suddenly on January 20, 2015. His contribution to the Encore Soundbank was one of his last musical endeavors. We are deeply grateful for his generous contribution to this project. He is greatly missed.

Sounds included in the library were created using classic instruments including various Moog modulars and Minimoogs, Buchla modular, EMS Synthi A and VCS3, Yamaha CS-80, Alesis Andromeda, Sequential Circuits Prophets, Hammond B3 organ, classic Korg synths, rare Russian Polivoks, multiple theremins and effects pedals, a rare and exotic Ondioline, and an extremely rare Moog Apollo, plus much more.*

'Bob Moog's legacy touches each and every one of us every day,' said Jim Cooper, Director of Marketing at MOTU. 'Here at MOTU, we were inspired by the milestone of his 81st birthday, to pay tribute to his lasting effect on music. What better way than with kids, and supporting the work of the Bob Moog Foundation to educate and inspire them through his life's work.'

Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation, notes, 'The Foundation is tremendously grateful to MOTU and the contributing artists who have made the Encore Soundbank an extraordinary resource for musicians across genres. The funding generated from this product will allow us to expand our educational project, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, and to inspire even more children through the intersection of science, music, and technology.'

The Bob Moog Foundation Encore Soundbank is now available for purchase from the MOTU web site for $99 (www.motu.com/moog-encore). All proceeds will be donated to the Bob Moog Foundation.

MOTU and the Bob Moog Foundation would like to extend special thanks and recognition to Erik Norlander, Arnaud Sicard, and the team at uvi.net for their invaluable assistance in producing this project, as well as to producer Nate Donmoyer who created the audio samples for the product."

Yamaha to Host Rare Vintage Synth Exhibit at NAMM

Pictured: Yamaha's first synth, the SY-1.

"Yamaha to Exhibit Rare Vintage Synthesizers From 40‐Year History at the 2015 NAMM Show

BUENA PARK, Calif. (January 6, 2015)—Yamaha today announced that it will exhibit around a dozen rare vintage synthesizers at the 2015 NAMM Show, the largest musical instrument trade show in North America, to be held January 22‐25, 2015 in Anaheim, California. This showcase, which celebrates Yamaha’s 40th anniversary of manufacturing synthesizers—a milestone reached this year— plans to include analog synthesizers like the SY‐2, CS30 and a special guest or two, the gorgeous GS1, the DX7, which was one of the most commercially successful synths of its day, and the rare VP1—a polyphonic physical modeling synthesizer. Some of the models will be playable. Yamaha introduced its first synthesizer, the SY‐1, in 1974 after decades of research and development and established a high technological benchmark when it released the CS80 polyphonic synthesizer in 1976. The company made musical history in 1983 when the DX7 debuted as the most commercially successful electronic keyboard of its time. This keyboard, which helped shape the sound of popular music in the 1980s, relied on frequency modulation—the leading‐edge technology of the time. By the end of the decade, Yamaha synths evolved from performance instruments to full‐fledged music workstations. The rise of music production synthesizers helped spur the home recording revolution by providing arrangers with a single tool to orchestrate almost any combination of musical instruments with ever‐more realistic tone generation. Yamaha helped develop the use of

sampled—or recorded—tones, along with physical modeling that went beyond sound by recreating instrument behavior as a mathematical model. Building on years of experience and distilling all of Yamaha’s technical innovations into one synth, the Motif series, introduced in 2001, evolved into an industry leader by offering great sound, computer integration and the ability to create sophisticated musical performances with ease. To celebrate the anniversary, Yamaha released the latest iteration of this series, the Motif XF, with a special edition white finish—the only Music Production Synthesizer on the market available in this color. The model offers an exclusive 40th Anniversary Premium Contents Pack that includes FL512M flash memory expansion, a USB drive with content from vintage Yamaha synthesizers and more than $1,000 in rebate offers on Yamaha products and third party soft synths, editors and sound libraries. Beyond hardware, Yamaha became an early adopter of digital technology. Earlier this year, the company launched www.yamahasynth.com, a new community for Yamaha synthesizer users. The site features a forum where members can interact with Yamaha’s product experts including the legendary Phil “Bad Mister” Clendeninn, Yamaha Synthesizer artists and other enthusiasts, along with resources to help all players get the most out of their instrument and download sounds directly into their synthesizers. 'Yamaha has long mastered the art of drawing on past technologies to improve on future synthesizer models,' said Nate Tschetter, marketing manager, Music Production, Yamaha Corporation of America. 'We continue to make high‐quality synthesizers for every stage of one’s musical career from the bedroom studio to the sold‐out stadium.' For more information, visit the Yamaha Booth at the 2015 NAMM Show in the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, Marquis Ballroom, January 22‐25, 2015, or http://4wrd.it/yamahasynth."

ADDAC .WAV Player & Moog Voyager
Update: cleaned up the description a bit:
1st test of my new ADDAC .WAV player. Watch at 1080p. The beat is the Amen Break included with the .WAV player which comes with an SD card loaded with a few samples. The synth that comes in at :15 is the Moog Voyager. I have the CV out of the .WAV player going into the Filter CV in of the Voyager. I have the Voyager set to play middle C with Gate ON so it just drones and the .WAV player modulates it. I just let the .WAV play adjusting the sample length followed by the bit/sample rate. Super simple. Listen not only to the Amen break change as I adjust knobs, but the Voyager as well. The .WAV player is in effect playing the Voyager.

Knobs:
Top Left: volume
Top Right: Sample length
2nd Right: File position - sample location
3rd Right: Sample Rate when enabled
4th Right: VCA
5th Left: CV Out Level
6th Right: CV Out Decay

Update: History of the Amen Break

Video explains the world's most important 6-sec drum loop

YouTube Uploaded by mobius32 on Feb 21, 2006

"This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip."
