Live Modular Expression: Cello Patch

Live Modular Expression: Cello Patch from thijs de vlieger on Vimeo.

"i've been looking at getting a french connection or a roli seaboard, but can't justify the price. so i decided to see what i can do expression wise with a keyboard and my intellijel planar joystick. i tried to make a cello patch using braids's bowed mode, and it came out pretty nice i think!

played it live, no editing, line signal recorded straight into the camera.

soundcloud downloadable audio:
https://soundcloud.com/thijsnoisia/live-modular-expression-cello-patch

patch details for the illuminati:

planar x-axis going into cv mixer, only mixed in a little.

minibrute v/oct into maths for portamento, into cv mixer, on 100%.

cv mixer out into braids v/oct and multed to braids color.

planar y-axis multed and into mvca, braids timbre and a-124 wasp filter cutoff.

braids on BOWD mode, output to wasp filter. wasp freq at 13h30, just easing off the highest freqs. wasp output to mvca.

mvca to behringer vd400 (great bbd delay) and tc trinity on spring verb.

rhythm is by roland aira tr8, triggered by pamela's workout in euclidean. delay on tr8 is the built in delay with some step on/off programming in the sequence. tr8 is the master clock, clocking pam by audio: rimshot every 8th note out into doepfer 143-1 comparator, comparator then clocks pam's sync. the synth on the 1 is the aira tb-3 through the aira vt-1, into the the tr-8's sidechained input."

Jeff Mills Exhibitionist 2 Featuring the Roland TR-909

Exhibitionist2Trailer from AxisRecords on Vimeo.

DJing with hardware synths. The focus in this trailer is performing with the Roland TR-909.

via CDM via factmag

'The Exhibitionist 2 DVD is designed to go even deeper into the art form to display, not only how a DJ uses the latest technology, but how he thinks in real time to create and work spontaneously like a musician playing an acoustic instrument or a soloist thinking of rhythms on-the-spot. This is a rare opportunity to see how the technology of today is allowing DJs to be more free and thus, more creative,' says Mills."

"The CD + DVD package will be out in September 2015, 11 years on from the first edition, accompanied by a series of three EP releases serving as “an introduction to the Detroit native’s new effort to go behind the scenes and inside the mind of an electronic musician.” Exhibitionist 2 Part 1 (AX067) kicks off the series, dropping in late June on Axis Records.

All the tracks were written by Mills specifically for the project and will feature in the Studio Mix on the DVD, which gives fans 'an inside view as to how some of the tracks were created'."

OCTAVE CATSTICK synth controller

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"ULTRA-RARE and fully working Octave-Plateau CATSTICK synth controller in amazing condition !
The original ad described it simply as :
"The better alternative to wheels, ribbons, pressure pads, knobs, sliders and pedals for any patchable synthesizer"
Built by OCTAVE-PLATEAU Electronics Inc. in New York City.
The unit runs on 110 volts and comes with an adaptor to make it work with European 220 voltage.
PATCHING
WHAT IS IT ?
The CATSTICK is a very powerful precision, spring-loaded joystick controller that lets one hand control four different modulation settings - 1 for each of the 4 joystick directions. By moving the stick off axis, combination modulations of different proportions are possible. When the stick is released, it springs back to its vertical, zero modulation position.

HOW DO YOU USE IT ?
For portable synthesizers, like the CAT, ODYSSEY or MINIMOOG - to quote a few - you can connect the CATSTICK outputs to the VCO, VCF or VCA inputs normally intended for footpedal controls. This lets you use the CATSTICK LFOs and control voltages to modulate the synthesizer as the joystick is moved. In patchable systems like the ARP 2600 or Modular MOOG, you can connect the CATSTICK VCAs in series with patchcords to allow real-time control of synthesizer patches.

WHO CAN USE IT ?
If you own a MINIMOOG, CAT, KITTEN, ODYSSEY, 2600, OBERHEIM, ROLAND, MODULAR SYSTEM or any other synthesizer with control voltage inputs, the CATSTICK is for YOU !

VERSATILITY
Included are 4 VCAs (each externally accessible), 2 wide-range LFOs with rate LED monitors, and a complete internal voltage processing system. The 20-jacks rear panel patch bay allows access to all of the internal control voltage signals and makes the CATSTICK a versatile addition for both performance-oriented and studio synthesis systems.

Not only the CATSTICK is a very powerful hands-on performance controller but it also is a very, VERY rare collector's item. You almost never see them for sale. So this is your chance to get hold of an exceptional piece of gear..."

Dave Smith Was an Ironman Triathlete

In case you missed it in this post, Roger Linn noted Dave Smith was "an avid athelete, cyclist and triathlete. He actually participated in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon in his younger years..."

@birdkids reminded me of an article on the development of the Prophet VS archived on the WaybackMachine. In it, Chris Meyer mentions Dave was in Hawaii prepping for the tournament during that time. I thought it was interesting and worth sharing. I captured it below.

The Birth of the Prophet VS

By Chris Meyer, ex-employee of Sequential Circuits

reprinted from the VS WaveWrangler User Guide by permission of Interval Music Systems,
©1991 Interval Music Systems.

It all started somewhere in 1985. We were still working on the Prophet 2000 sampler,
and as resident historian (in other words, I had the most magazines and manuals) another
engineer was asking me to explain how various instruments performed crossfades. I had
finished discussing the Fairlight, and had moved on the PPG - explaining its wavetables,
and the ability for it to scan a group of waves first in one direction and then back again,
While I was scrawling this back and forth motion in my notebook, suddenly a little twinge
went off in the back of my head, and myhand drew the next line arcing down the page.. and the
concept of crossfading beween waves in two dimension, not just one, was born.

Free presets pack for Native Instruments Massive X

Published on Sep 9, 2019 Expressive E

"🔥🔥🔥 Discover Expressive E free 🎁 original presets for #NATIVEINSTRUMENTS #MassiveX synthesizer! These presets are available for #Touché and Non-Touché users and can be used with or without Touché. Download link 👉🏼 www.expressivee.com/massive-x
This new 20-preset collection harnesses the advanced sound-design capabilities of Massive X and offers users the next level in articulate playability.

📌You don’t already have a Touché or Touché SE?
Expressive E has released a free synthesizer preset pack that does not only require one of its unique Touché or Touché SE controllers. The deep modular nature of Massive X lets its users interact with its sounds much more expressively than on traditional subtractive synthesizers, making it a perfect candidate for the sound design talents of Expressive E’s team. Their free presets utilize Massive X’s macro controls with multiple parameters per macro, sophisticated programming, so users can immediately shape the sounds in creative ways with the turn of a single control. Even after the initial sound stops—for instance with short pluck or bell sounds—the macros that single control continues to put out volume and timbre changes with no need to re-trigger the note.

🎁 This Massive X 20-preset download is free to anyone who registers an account at Expressive E’s website: www.expressivee.com

Owners of an Expressive E Touché or Touché SE controller will have an even more precise and supremely tactile experience with these sounds. The devices’ four-axis control surface offers the highest degree of touch and pressure sensitivity for both the most subtle and most aggressive parameter changes.

While anyone can open these free presets directly in Massive X, Touché and Touché SE owners can open them Expressive E’s Lié plugin host software. This allows the user to manipulate up to eight of Massive X’s macros at once with a single hand, making rhythmic manipulation of the sounds much more varied and physically intuitive. Each of those Massive X macro controls manipulates multiple parameters, making these synth sounds extraordinarily dynamic when used the Touché or Touché SE.

Touché and Touché SE hardware ships with more than 200 sounds powered by UVI Workstation software. These sounds are custom-designed to perfectly complement the controllers’ four-directional movements. Lié also includes presets for more than 30 popular software and hardware synthesizers from brands such as ARTURIA, KORG, MOOG, NOVATION, ROLAND, UH-E, and others. These free MASSIVE X presets are Expressive E’s latest sound design effort but by no means the last.

They are available now, along with the Touché ($399) and Touché SE ($229), at www.expressivee.com

Parallax - "Ryu." Live synth super-mega colon-blowing keytar soloing!

YouTube via hamsterdunce | July 10, 2010

"More music on umop.com/parallax.htm

Skip ahead to @3:30 for the keytar solo if you're the impatient type.

After uploading a live version of another "VIsit the Entropics" tune last week ("Umlaut" - which I promise to redo as well) and being thoroughly disappointed with its audio quality, I decided to offer up this fun indoors direct-audio performance of "Ryu" that's quite a bit more watchable. I'm basically just playing along with the CD here, and the solo is so incredibly hard to double that I decided to harmonize with most of it instead. The result is an occasionally messy wank that has moments of pure alien bliss.

Korg TR-61, 01/W, and Axis-1 "Axistron" controlling the Roland JD-800 off camera.

The bin boxes all contain Lego blocks; inventory for my Bricklink.com shop. A man's gotta pay the bills somehow."

SCREAM 2007: ANALOGLIVE! - Instrument List

Via Peter Grenader on the Plan B list:
"as of Friday all of the ensemble performers have arrived in the Los Angeles area, with Richard coming in from Atlanta and Thighpaulsandra making the long trek from Wales. We begin work early in the week in a sound stage before commencing formal rehearsals in the theater on Thursday afternoon.

As far as the equipment we'll be using, we've put together an orchestra of oscillators: Off the top of my head - three rather large Plan B systems, a Doepfer/Plan B/Livewire system, Arp 2600, two cabinets of Aries, one nine panel and a medium-sized three panel Serge fitted with a custom Plan B model 13, the largest Wiard system in the world, an EMS Synthi-AKS, the EAR Performance system, a Buchla 200e, Nord Modular, a Novation, a Waldorf Wave, two tcelectronic reverbs (a 2000 and 60000), tons of delays and a Yamaha SPX90. Controller include a C-Thru-Music Axis, a Continuum Fingerboard, a Doepfer PK88 and MAQ 16/3, Roland A-33, a Fatar workstation and an Analogue Systems French Connection.

Along with a wall of effect racks, Chas Smith will be bringing two of his own instruments: the Guitarilla and the Towers. Guitarzilla is a steel guitar made of machined aluminum and welded titanium tubing. It has a 12 string neck tuned to a diatonic scale and an 8-string bass neck. It is also fitted with a small waterless Waterphone-type instrument which is bowed. The Towers are eight 1 1/4" diameter grade 9 titanium rods with titanium plates welded on the ends which are both bowed and struck with a variety of mallets. The longest Tower is 109", standing over 10 feet tall in it's hanger, and the shortest is 55". They have been cut to form a scale which can be obliterated by the complexity of the sounds that the plates generate. They're sonically and visually majestic, bordering on astonishing. Go here for a photo:

http://www.ear-group.net/towers.jpg
(pictured)

We will be performing six pieces, one each from the six players, all of which performed by the ensemble - it's not a series of solo performances. Three of the pieces will be world premiers."

5) recording Bass & Pads from G2X - Live Mode
6) mute some Tracks
7) add another Bass (Jupiter Xm) Track - Step Mode
8) small Melody by MicroFreak - Live Mode
9) showing Track Transpose...

From the user manual:

MidiTraC v1.01
++ 4Players ++

Preface:
Sometimes developer are so deeply connected to their project that they don't reach customers, so they don't manage to transport the real message. Hence this preface, which should explain the basic idea behind the concept of MidiTraC.

The actual inspiration comes from a video showing "Vince Clarke" and the "BBC Computer". Based on this, plus a lot of imagination and feedback from beta testers, the current version of the MidiTraC sequencer was developed.

The initial spark was the idea of the polyphonic step sequencer, which is often found in hardware synthesizers. Unfortunately many implementations are only half-hearted and have many limitations (monophony, number of steps or complicated impractical handling). MidiTraC tries to counter these shortcomings.

MidiTraC combines different device classes:
+ Midi Looper (Notes & CC Data)
+ Step Sequencer (polyphonic)
+ Conditional Sequence Generator
+ Note Editor & Modifier
+ Arpeggiator

MidiTraC can handle 16 tracks, each track is assigned to a fixed midi channel. The tracks can be independently muted, quantized, deleted or transposed.

All midi events, that arrives at the midi input are recorded. Therefore all settings have to be done at the midi input source, e.g. the choice of the midi channels. Usually the input source is a Midi-Keyboard, but it can be everything that send midi notes or CC data.

The principle is comparable to an audio Looper, with the difference that the amount of data is not generated by the time axis, but by the number of recorded events.

The device works on the basis of five slots, each slot can handle patterns up to 1024 midi events (a pattern manage 16 midi channels).

Notes can be generated, recorded live or step by step. An infinite number of overdubs are possible, each of these overdubs can have different lengths [Loop]. The longest recorded loop, represented here by the total lengths [Bars] (from 1 to 999 Measures).

Every operation can be done while running, so patterns can be loaded, saved, copied or merged to/from the Slots (for now, there are 128 memory locations). There is always one [Undo] step possible. [See the user manual for more].

Quick Specs:

+ 16 tracks, 1024 events (notes / midi CC) per pattern
+ 5 patterns with variable pattern lengths: 1 to 255 bars
+ Scales and quantization on recording or via ChannelQuantize
+ 18 quantization grids 1/64 - 1/1 (including triplets & dotted notes)
+ Note Editor (Microtiming 1/192, Pitch, Velocity, Duration, Channel)
+ unlimited smart overdubs with variable loop lengths (consolidate)
+ polyphonic step input with individually adjustable gate lengths
+ Pattern Generator (polyphonic / monophonic / drums / scales)
+ individual transposing / muting (live/lock) for all midi channels
+ Merge / load / save while sequencer is running...
