The fifth in Dave Smith Instruments' "In The Spotlight with the PRO 2" series is currently up with SEBASTIAN AROCHA MORTON, aka ROCAsound here.

"Composer/Producer/Remixer Sebastian Arocha Morton (aka ROCAsound) graduated from Berklee College of Music and moved to Los Angeles to begin what would become a very fruitful and successful career in Electronic Music Production and Film Scoring. His remixes and productions for Sting, Counting Crows, Samantha James, Donna Summer, Seal, Jody Watley, Santana, Amerie, Vikter Duplaix and Fisherspooner among many others have yielded 6 Billboard #1 singles as well as 2 Grammy nominations. THE GREAT GIANA SISTERS - Live on Pocket Operator PO-28 'Robot' - [LukHash]

Published on Mar 25, 2016 lukhashdotcom

"Remix of another 80's classic. The Great Giana Sisters (Time Warp Productions), composed by Chris Hülsbeck in 1987. Played on a Pocket Operator PO-28 'Robot'. This one always had a special place in my heart, since I was a kid.. It was in fact the 3rd computer game I have ever played (Moon Patrol (on Arcade Machine) being the 1st one & Frogger 2 (on C64) being 2nd). Still remember how gobsmacked I was when it first loaded on my shiny brand new and belowed C64. I hope you will enjoy this little remix as much as I enjoyed playing Giana!"

Live homestudio improvisation Ableton Push, iPad, illuminated orbs, Rocket, Korg Volcas, Microbrute

Published on Mar 14, 2015 Perplex On

"This is a live and uncut homestudio improvisation / test-drive starring: toy robot, kalimba, illuminated orbs, Ableton Push, iPad loaded with Soundscaper and Dedalus, Waldorf Rocket, Korg Volca Keys, Volca Bass, Arturia Microbrute.

Tech facts:

- illuminated orbs with enclosed wiimotes, which are sending varius motion data (acceleration, pitch, roll etc.)

- this data is converted to midi data which is controlling the various analog synths (e.g. acceleration is triggering notes and pitch is controlling the filter cutoff)

- iPad loaded with the apps Soundscaper an Dedalus

- Ableton Push for piano

Timeline:

00:00 - 00:40: Live sampling of a toy robot and a kalimba
00:40 - 02:00: mangling with Soundscaper for creating a drone
02:05 - 03:25: illuminated orbs triggering and controlling the analog synths
03:25: some piano with Push
04:45 - 05:55 orb triggering some glitchy drums which are live processed with the iPad app Dedalus
06:07 - end: some little mallets triggered by the orb"

Midibot

Published on Sep 11, 2014 Robby Kilgore

"Another midi toy - Using the same hardware as the rotator board I created with Dennis Alichwer. I wrote a little hack to play semi-random midi bass lines. You have a lot of control over the mode, groove and various other parameters. It can also be clocked to external drum machines so it makes a nice "midi-robot" bass player that's pretty funky and fun to jam with."

Note this is the first Midibot post.

"Fred's vocals by DECTalk Express which is also used by Stephen Hawking. Cindy and Kate's vocals utilized two HP Scanjet 3C flatbed scanners. The robot guitar, keyboard, snare and bass drum all are controlled with a couple of PIC16F84A microcontrollers.

special thanks goes out to:

Chris Rasmussen who offered to fly me and my robot band down to Athens, Georgia for the Art Rocks Athens Festival. Sadly due to my work schedule I could not make it. What he didn't know I was already secretly working on my next video so I offered to promote this great venue.

Pastor Snoopi Botten has provided great on-line material with respect to programming the DECTalk speech synthesizer. http://theflameofhope.co/DECTALK.html

Special thanks goes out to Greg Howley and without his help this project would of never seen the light of day.

DX FM Free Synth And Drum Sample Library

"DX FM is a free sample library made with Yamaha's DX200 synthesizer. Very little outboard processing was used to retain the character of the synth. Crystalline keys, cutting drums, and alien robot noise make this sample library a must have for anyone wanting edge for their productions.

This library contains 39 one-shot sounds in 44.1 kHz WAV files, in 24 and 16 bit resolution.

If you would like to contribute to these free libraries, please head to www.darksideofthetune.com and purchase one of the libraries available in the store.

Season's Greetings from The Glasgow School of Art

Season's Greetings from The Glasgow School of Art from The Glasgow School of Art on Vimeo.

This one in via Alan, spotted on Creative Review.  James Houston who created the video brought us a number of other brilliant pieces using vintage computer gear.  You'll find links to them at the bottom of this post.  Be sure to check them out.   And of course, be sure to see the holiday channel below for more holiday posts!  Some great ones have come in so far.

"Season's Greetings and best wishes from The Glasgow School of Art for 2014.

This year's seasonal e-card comes from alumnus James Houston. James graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2008 with a first class degree in Visual Communication. He works in Glasgow as a moving image maker. http://www.1030.co.uk

The ensemble: A collection of vintage Mac computers, a Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum + 1 and a SEGA Mega Drive perform a rendition of 'Carol of the Bells' with lyrics re-written by Robert Florence & Philip Larkin in the Mackintosh Library at The Glasgow School of Art. Jacket by Ten30.co.uk (Alan Moore, GSA Textiles alumnus 2008).

James aimed to create a piece of Christmas music by appropriating past Christmas gifts. "I discovered that a few had the capability for speech synthesis so the obvious next step was to figure out how to assemble a choir." he said. "This is a process which is based on the last piece of work I did as a student at GSA." (See James' Degree Show film - Big Ideas (Don't Get Any).

Lyrics: Carol of the Bells

HAIL THE MACHINES

BLOW OFF THE DUST
WIPE OFF THE RUST

CHRISTMAS HAS COME

"Thank you to Karoke Version for permission to use their vocal tracks in my video. Initially I tried to program the vocals with DECTalk but it was unintelligible. All the toys were purchased from Goodwill and Value Village. I apologized for my failed attempt to turn Elmo and Teddy Ruxpin into Zombies. The premise was to have rejected toys cast aside by society turn into a couple of Zombies. As always I didn't have enough artistic abilities and time to complete this.
Toys used
Yamaha CX5M - organ
Casio SA-9 - saxophone and bass
Hard drives - drums
Elmo - Main Vocals
Teddy Ruxpin - Backing Vocals
Tomy Omnibot - Robot Voice
All the toys were hacked and are controlled by two PIC16F84A micro controllers and a bunch of L298N H-Bridges."

KMI Launches QuNeo Rogue Indiegogo Campaign

See the video here.

"Rogue is a robust wireless connection and battery for the QuNeo 3D Pad Controller.

BERKELEY, California – September 9, 2013 – KMI has officially launched an Indiegogo campaign for its newest product— QuNeo Rogue, an integrated wireless connectivity and long lasting battery power accessory for KMI's QuNeo pad controller. Giving artists unprecedented freedom, now anyone with a QuNeo can use Rogue to get out from behind their gear and into the spotlight.

What is Rogue?
Rogue is an accessory for the QuNeo that supplies long lasting battery power and an incredibly robust wireless connection to a computer.
Rogue attaches quickly and easily to the bottom of your QuNeo with low-profile velcro.
Battery life for Rogue exceeds 12 hours (in time-trials we saw it function over 16 hours).
Artists say…
"The idea of having a really sophisticated controller that's completely wireless would really open up a lot of opportunities that currently don't exist."
- Dan Deacon (yes, that Dan Deacon!)

"I love this controller; it's absolutely amazing. They're going to make my favorite controller even better- by making it wireless!"
- Thavius Beck (Producer/Artist, Dubspot Instructor, Ableton Certified Trainer)

"KMI told me about the Rogue and my brain started flipping out a little bit."
- Jack Conte (Pomplemoose, Patreon) (built a QuNeo playing robot!)

Learn more at www.keithmcmillen.com/QuNeo/rogue/

Contribute to our Indiegogo campaign now and be one of the first to get a Rogue for $350 (US shipping, add $50 for Int’l shipping) or get a QuNeo + Rogue for $450 (includes US shipping, add $50 for Int’l shipping)"

Voice bot for iOS Now Available

voice bot - robot, monkey, mexican, cat beard

Published on May 27, 2013 humbletune·50 videos

"This is my little test song for voice bot, sorry Imogen Heap for borrowing a few chords from you. This is a channel vocoder I have been working on, and I have been going back and forth, if I should release it or not. The reason mostly being that it takes a bit of effort from the user. Clearest I think the sound gets if you speak slow and articulate, in this sample though I kind of more sang, dragging some of the letters. Also, a mix of your voice and the vocoder could work too.

Well, I have decided to submit it anyway, I think it makes some cool sounds. It should be available soon and it won't be too expensive."

It is available now:
voice bot - Erik Sigth

"Voice bot is a real time channel vocoder. Using the microphone, your voice modulates the synth resulting in a robot like singing voice. The synth engine, also known as the carrier, comes with the oscillator shapes saw, square, pulse and noise and a pitch lfo. For the modulation part of the engine there is amplification settings for 8 frequency bands, frame smudge and sample rate, delay and flanger. There is also a minimalistic sampler and support for midi keys and Audiobus.

+++ microphone input.
+++ oscillator (saw, square, pulse and noise).
+++ 8 band amplification.
+++ frame smudge.
+++ sample rate.
+++ pitch lfo.
+++ delay.
+++ flanger.
+++ self adapting input gain.
+++ output gain.
+++ core midi (usb/wifi).
+++ Audiobus (output, effect and input)."
