MOOG SOUND LAB Season 2: Twin Shadow

YouTube Uploaded by MoogMusicInc on Feb 2, 2012
Re-Published on Jun 23, 2012 GreeneSigns·10 videos

"Twin Shadow graced us with a Mooged out version of "Castle in the Snow" from their album Forget.

Twin Shadow AKA George Lewis Jr. deftly plays the Moog Guitar, utilizing the patented sustaining power to float cascading melodic lines across the soundscape. Lewis' guitar and vocals are running through the Analog Delay Moogerfooger.

Keyboardist Wynne Bennett uses the Little Phatty to lay down a fat rumbling bass line throughout the song with her left hand. With her right hand she plays a Minimoog Voyager XL, which is MIDI controlling Moog's new synthesizer iPad app, Animoog enabling her to play polyphonically.

Bass player Russell Manning plays the Moog Guitar, using the control pedal to sweep the cutoff of the guitar's internal ladder filter, to create a wah-like effect that adds a funky dub feel interwoven with the percussion.

Michael Hutcherson plays a Minimoog Old School Voyager, layering haunting soundscapes and filter sweeps throughout the song.

Drummer Andy Bauer is playing three Minimoog Voyager Rack Mounts as percussion instruments, triggering each one separately using the Trap-Kat XL drum pads. Each drum sound is a Minimoog Voyager preset that was specifically sculpted to envelop the track.

Mega Moog Semi Modular: Minimoog Voyager Synth & Moogerfooger Effects

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Voyager is a limited edition SOLAR that came out after the Electric Blue - It cost me $4999

Here’s the setup:

Moog Voyager Solar
MF-101 Lowpass Filter
MF-102 Ring Modulator
MF-103 12-Stage Phaser
MF-104Z Analog Delay
MF-105M MIDI MuRF
MF-107 FreqBox
VX-351 CV Expander for Voyager
CP-251 Control Processor
MP-201 Foot Pedal
2 X Moogerfooger Rack Mount kit
Moog VX/CP Rack Mount kit

All the individual modules from the Moogerfoogers can be patched into the Voyager via the VX-351 Expander and modified by the CP-201 Control Processor. This adds the following modules to the Voyager:

3 x LFO’s
2 x VCO’s
2 x Envelopes
1 x Filter
And obviously all the FX (Delay, ring mod, phaser etc)

The (now discontinued) MP-201 Foot pedal can be used to send up to 4 discrete MIDI clocked LFO signals to the the Voyager and ‘Fooger modules (this is super rad as the LFO’s in the Voyager can’t be MIDI synced)

Couple all of this physical patching ability with the new Pot Map feature on the latest Voyager OS (essentially internal modular patching) and the ease of use of this feature using the Voyager Plug SE VST/AU (rather than the screen) and you’re in analog Moog modular heaven!

Make no mistake this is a BEAST of a Moog Semi-modular setup."

Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog Exibition Updates

"Exhibition features Keith Emerson's Legendary “Monster Moog” Modular Synthesizer through October 18th, 2009

CARSLBAD, CA/ASHEVILLE, NC – The Museum of Making Music (Carlsbad, CA), in partnership with the Bob Moog Foundation, has opened Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog exhibition, to run through April 30, 2010. The exhibit is the first of its kind, marking the first public display of the artifacts from Bob Moog’s archives and an examination of the impact of his work on the world of music.

MONSTER MOOG INSTALLATION
On August 30th, Keith Emerson's (Emerson, Lake and Palmer, The Nice) mammoth “Monster Moog” modular synthesizer was added to the exhibit after it was featured the previous evening in a musical celebration of the exhibit opening by Emerson and Erik Norlander. Emerson used this remarkable instrument on numerous recordings over the past 40 years, including his solo in “Lucky Man” (1969), possibly the most popular synth solo in history. He also used the synthesizer on countless world tours and is generally credited with pioneering the use of the Moog modular as a touring musician.

The “Monster Moog” began as a modest system, but grew over time as Emerson
requested that Moog create custom additions for his touring instrument, including extra modules, custom sample-and-hold, and several pre-sets, an innovative addition for that time. The synthesizer grew into a massive cabinet of five sections and over 75 modules. It stands more than four feet above its special base – almost 8 feet high. Its sound is noticeably clearer and stronger than any other keyboard Emerson plays – it is an instrument of significance and legend, and arguably the most famous synthesizer of all time.

Bob Moog and Keith Emerson enjoyed a special relationship of toolmaker and musician that grew in to a lifelong friendship. Moog is noted for listening to musician's needs and technical specifications which he then used to improve his instruments: This dynamic is explored throughout the Waves exhibit.

Moment of MOOG

Moog Urges ''Moment of Moog'' Throughout the World; In Addition, Foundation Launches Web Site to Continue the Moog Legacy

"Moment of Moog" audio file ASHEVILLE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 2006--August 21st, 2006 is a difficult date for lovers of the synthesizer. It was one year ago on August 21st that Bob Moog, inventor of the synthesizer, passed away. This year, Moog Music is rallying the media world to honor the memory of Bob Moog with a special, 20-second "Moment of Moog." During the Moog moment, Moog requests that radio stations play a short musical piece, recorded on one of Moog's most famous inventions, the Minimoog(R) Voyager(R). (See MULTIMEDIA AVAILABLE links or download from www.moogmusic.com.) [Here's the mp3] In doing this, the world of music will be paying tribute to one of the greatest legends in electronic musical instruments.

"Sometimes it feels as if he is still here; other times, he is sorely missed. One year ago his fate was sealed and the finality of his death certainly gave all of us pause. The 'Moment of Moog' is our way of honoring the tens of thousands of musicians who carry Bob's legacy forward," reflected Mike Adams, President, Moog Music.

Another organization is also set to honor and continue the Bob Moog legacy. The Bob Moog Foundation for Electronic Music will launch its Web presence on August 21st, 2006. The foundation will be online at www.moogfoundation.org. The objectives of the Foundation are to create: endowed scholarships at University of North Carolina-Asheville, Berklee School of Music and Cornell University; a Memorial Museum in Moog's name; an outreach/mentoring program that brings electronic music into disadvantaged schools; and to sponsor electronic music competitions and concerts that would foster innovation in the field.

Ken Soper, composer of the "Moment of Moog" piece, said, "These sounds remind me that Bob, like the Minimoog Voyager, is alive."

Moog Music and our customers carry on the legacy of Bob Moog, the inventor of the synthesizer. We design and manufacture electronic musical instruments with unlimited sonic possibilities, including Etherwave(R) theremins, Moogerfooger(R) effects modules, Minimoog(R) Voyager(R), Little Phatty(TM) synthesizers, and the Moog PianoBar(R). Founded by Robert Moog, Moog Music is located in Asheville, NC."

We all know he didn't invent the synthsizer. It's just annoying when they state that.

Signed Moog Minimoog Voyager Anniversary & Dotcom modular

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This mid-size dotcom modular system is offered in excellent condition, fully working with no marks or scratches. Also included in the auction is a Moog Minimoog Voyager Anniversary Edition, signed by Bob Moog himself. I bought the Moog just before Bob Moog sadly passed away in 2005.
In addition to all the complexity offered by the dotcom system, and the classic format of the Voyager, I have customized a Moog C-351 CV expander, and made a panel to include it in the dotcom rack. The finish is every bit as professional as the rest of the system. By connecting the Voyager with the multicore cable, it's CV's, LFO's, envelopes, noise, and a comprehensive range of controllers become patchable on the front panel. I have also added extra multiples on spare panel space. The build quality of both the dotcom and the Moog is of very high standard, and of course you get that classic rich Moog sound, with a total of 5 Oscillators available.

2 Q106 Oscillators
1 Q113 8 channel mixer

Foundations of Synthesis Series by The Bob Moog Foundation

Published on Feb 11, 2013 moogfoundation·82 videos

Featuring Marc Doty, aka AutomaticGainsay

http://moogfoundation.org

Playlist:

1. The Synthesis of Synthesis - "This is the introductory video for the Bob Moog Foundation/macProVideo series "The Foundation of Synthesis." In it, Marc Doty sets the stage for the intent of these videos, which is an integrative instruction which not only describes synthesizer function and operation, but also gives a historical foundation for the functionalities and their implementation."

2. The Synthesis of Synthesis- Sound - "No instruction in synthesis would be complete without some explanation of the physics of sound! This video is one of several videos which outline the physical principles upon which synthesis is based."

3. The Synthesis of Synthesis- The Hammond Novachord - "The progression of devices which led to the modern synthesizer is diverse and interesting. The Foundation of Synthesis covers a number of them which portray a progressive development. One of these synthesizer precursors was the Hammond Novachord, a tube- based keyboard device whose groundbreaking technology is still present in some synthesizers today. More than most, this proto-synthesizer resembled what we came to think of as the modern synthesizer."

4. Foundation of Synthesis- Oscillator Introduction - "The Foundation of Synthesis dives into synthesizer technology with the Oscillator— the origin of sound in synthesis! Marc leads us through the history of this device from its beginning— as a lightbulb!— to its implementation in electronic musical instruments."

5. Oscillators- Pulse Width Modulation - "Pulse Width Modulation is a pleasing aural effect generated by the voltage-controlled adjustment of the width of a square wave. In this Foundation of Synthesis video, Marc demonstrates this function on several classic synthesizers. The video includes an oscilloscope, which shows you exactly what is happening when the width of the square wave output of the oscillator is changed!"

6. Filter- Introduction - "In this part of the 3rd Tutorial of the Foundation of Synthesis, Marc outlines the history of the filter from its origin in the telephone to its application in electronic devices in order to give a firm understanding of how the filter came to be an important part of modern synthesizers. The filter is a function which removes harmonics from a sound. Since harmonics define the timbre of the sound, this is a fast and easy way to create new timbres."

7. Filter- Cutoff Control - "Adjustment of the cutoff point of the filter is such a popular process that it has spawned whole genres of music. In this video, Marc shows the sound and functionality of this particular aspect of the most popular module in the modern synthesizer."

8. Filter-Voyager Serial Resonance - "The Moog Voyager design of Bob Moog includes some unique and useful functionalities. In this video, Marc explores the dual-filter nature of the Moog Voyager by demonstrating some unique ways to apply its filter arrangement."

9. Control Voltage Explanation Part 1 - "For the average musician, control voltage is an abstract concept. Of all the aspects of synthesis, it seems to be the most confusing. In this video, Marc gives a straight-forward and easy-to-understand description of the functionality using concrete examples. With a firm grasp of control voltage, synthesis becomes considerably easier and fun!"

10. Control Voltage Explanation Part 2 - "Here is part two of a video where Marc gives a straight-forward and easy-to-understand description of the process and application of control voltage. With a firm grasp of control voltage, synthesis becomes considerably easier and fun!"

11. The Amp Introduction - "In this video, Marc gives us a basic history of what can be the least-exciting module in the modern synthesizer, but then goes on to show what can be done when this module includes a fair amount of functionality. The Amp is the last step in the synthesis process, and can give you a variety of power over the timbre you create!"

12. The ARP Envelope Follower - "The Envelope Follower is one of the most fun control functions to exist. It takes the amplitude of a given signal and converts it to a voltage. As the amplitude rises, the control voltage rises. This can be used to control any function in the synthesizer which can be controlled via control voltage... which, in an analog synth, is most of them! In this video, Marc gives a demonstration of this under-implemented synthesizer function using the ARP 2600."

13. Designing Timbres- Introduction - "This video introduces the "Designing Timbres" tutorial by explaining exactly what is going to happen within it. It features some of the music and synthesizers used in the rest of the tutorial."

14. Designing Timbres: Major/Minor Chord - "'It doesn't play chords!' -This is the complaint most heard in regard to monophonic analog synthesizers... but wait... if you have three oscillators and some awesome functionality like the Moog Voyager, there is an answer to this complaint. In this video, Marc shows you how you can generate a sort of controllable polyphony using the monophonic Moog Voyager!"

15. Designing Timbres: Duality - "In this video, Marc demonstrates the the functional benefit of a synthesizer like the Yamaha CS-15, which is essentially two different synthesizers stacked together. By altering settings in each division, interesting timbres can be created."

Asheville, NC --- The Bob Moog Foundation announces a once in a lifetime raffle opportunity to begin Tuesday March 9, 2010 at 12pm (EST). The Foundation will be selling $50 raffle tickets for a chance to win one of Lou Reed's Moog Guitars. Only 200 tickets will be made available. Participants can purchase raffle tickets online at the Foundation's online store http://moogfoundation.org/shop. The raffle will close when the 200 tickets have been sold and a winner will be chosen by an automated random selector and notified via email. All proceeds go to benefit the programs of the Bob Moog Foundation. Employees and volunteers of Moog Music, the Bob Moog Foundation and Lou Reed are not eligible to participate in the auction.

Moog Music Inc., the company which carries on the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog through its innovative instruments, is donating the Paul Vo Collector Edition (1 of only 300) Moog Guitar, serial #005, signed and played by Lou Reed. The strikingly beautiful instrument is a maple top Tiger Eye Flame with an ash body, maple neck and ebony fret board. Reed has signed the front of the guitar; his labels for the guitar's controls remain on the instrument as well as the brackets for his guitar strap.

Lou Reed, best known as the former guitarist, vocalist and principle songwriter for the experimental rock band Velvet Underground, has enjoyed a prolific career as a solo guitarist known for the pioneering of many sound effects including distortion, high volume feedback and nonstandard tunings. His love affair with the innovative Moog Guitar began early, as he played the instrument in its prototype phase. Reed experiences the Moog Guitar for the first time in this YouTube video. Upon hearing the guitar for the first time, Reed exclaimed “This is amazing....this opens the door”. Reed performed on the Moog Guitar on the David Lettermen Show in the fall of 2008.

Mike Adams, President of Moog Music, states “Our thanks to Lou Reed, who experienced the Moog Guitar in its earliest evolution and inspired us to continue our development efforts. Gratefully, the proceeds from this raffle will support the Bob Moog Foundation. Both the Bob Moog Foundation and Moog Music serve to honor the genius of Bob Moog.”

Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation acknowledges “The Bob Moog Foundation is deeply grateful for the support of Lou Reed and Moog Music. The funds raised from this raffle will be of great assistance in expanding our Student Outreach Program, the program in which we bring Moog instruments in to the schools and teach children the science behind the sounds of electronic music. This program, even in its infant stages, has opened children's minds and engaged their spirits to explore the extensive sonic possibilities that Moog instruments offer.”

Special Moog Voyager Signature Edition SN 598

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "This is the 598th Signature Edition Moog Voyager. It is the third-to-last one ever made in 2003, and was a special arrangement between a dealer in Los Angeles and Moog Music to receive the last three (598, 599, 600) made in an absolutely gorgeous flamed maple wood chassis to commemorate the end of the run.

Because of this exclusive arrangement, not many people are aware Moog did something special with the final units. The Signature Edition marked the triumphant return of Bob Moog to the analog synthesizer world, so it's truly fitting that the last three instruments got something special, just as the final twenty five original Minimoogs did many years ago.

I bought it brand new in 2003 and later sent it to Moog in Asheville, NC for a full factory calibration & software updates bringing it up to v3.X functionality.

I have only used it sparingly in my smoke-free home studio. It is in MINT condition.

Comes with:

1) Original Moog shipping box
2) All documents (including certificate hand signed by Bob Moog and service record)
3) Original gooseneck lamp
4) Moog soft Voyager Gig Bag ($99 value)
5) Moog ATA Voyager hard case ($319 value)

This is a unique opportunity for the Moog collector to turn the clock back over a decade and pick up a truly special example of this legendary instrument in brand new condition."

Overdriving the Moog Voyager

FAT MOOG: How to make your Moog Voyager sound FAT, overloaded, unstable, about to lose it...etc

Published on Oct 10, 2012 by timtsang3

"This is a simple "overload" trick that's been posted on the Moog Music Forum for some time now (http://forum.moogmusic.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14154), and I found it to be real helpful. you totally dont need a distortion pedal if you have a Moog Voyager. The whole thing IS a distortion pedal."

Note there are different ways to overdrive the filter. Via MBlom in the thread: "But at least in theory there are two different ways you can overload the filter/VCA. If you send one of the outputs back into the mixer you get a feedback loop where the resonance might self oscillate. But if you use an insert jack and put it in the Mix Out/Audio Filter In you can boost the signal from the oscillators prior to the filter. This creates an overload as well but no feedback. So if I'm not misunderstanding something, you actually have two different types of overdrive in the Voyager. Right?"

The audio levels are also different between the line outs on the back the headphone out on front.

And via Sound on Sound on the Old School: "Mildly exasperated, I turned to the rear (or upper) panel, which is largely the same as the Voyager's. This means lots of quarter-inch voltage inputs (11 in total) for interfacing with expression pedals, or modular gear such as Moog's own Moogerfoogers. An effects loop insert point is provided too, ideal for plumbing in external effects after the mixer section and before the filters. This is one of those simple additions that prove to be genuinely worthwhile in practice and had me digging out a wide collection of old effects processors. Adjacent to the insert point, the external audio input is on hand to process any source you fancy — including the Old School's own headphone output. This version of the Minimoog trick sounds a trifle different in this incarnation; indeed, with the levels cranked up it threw up some of the most extreme (and occasionally scary) noises in the Old School's repertoire."

DISCOVERY: Garaj Mahal and Fareed Haque Present The Moog Guitar

"ASHEVILLE, N.C. (March, 2010) – Take the guitar considered by many to be the most innovative instrument of the decade; put it in the hands of a musical visionary and you’re sure to embark on a voyage of discovery. Moog Music did just that and the soundtrack to this musical journey has been captured on a new CD titled DISCOVERY, Garaj Mahal and Fareed Haque Present The Moog Guitar.

DISCOVERY was inspired by Garaj Mahal’s exploration of the Moog Guitar’s sonic palette and the limitless ways that it can be incorporated into traditional and modern playing and production styles. The result is a vibrant, eclectic yet coherent body of work from players at the top of their game. The songs span a range of styles from clubby euro/electro and jazz/rock to traditional jazz and classical. Whether overdubbing seven Moog Guitar parts to recreate a Vivaldi lute concerto or sampling, processing and remixing The Moog Guitar with Ableton Live (by Garaj Mahal keyboardist and Moog synth wiz, Eric Levy), Fareed and company never sacrifice musical expression for technical showmanship.

In addition to his work with Garaj Mahal, jazz, classical and world music virtuoso Fareed Haque has played with a stellar list of top artists including Sting, Joe Zawinul and Medeski, Martin and Wood. Throughout his career he has balanced a love of guitar tradition with a spirit of sonic exploration, making The Moog Guitar the perfect musical vehicle for him.

Introduced at the Summer NAMM tradeshow in 2008, the Moog Guitar has received numerous industry honors including Guitar Player Magazine's 2009 Reader's Choice Award, Electronic Musician Magazine's 2009 Editor's Choice Award, 2008 Summer NAMM "Best In Show" honors, a 2008 “Best of What’s New Award” from Popular Science magazine and a 2009 Mix Foundation TEC Award. The instrument’s unique ability to control string vibration opens the door to another musical dimension without sacrificing traditional guitar tone and playing techniques.

Along with Lou Reed and Vernon Reid, Haque was one of a handful of top musicians given access to The Moog Guitar prior to its launch. During a Garaj Mahal tour, a brief stop at the Moog factory in Asheville, NC led to his first encounter with a Moog Guitar prototype. After a short session in the Moog sound room, the band continued their tour and Fareed’s mind filled with musical possibilities.

By the time they reached Atlanta, plans were already underway to immediately secure a Moog Guitar for recording. When Moog could not ship their only prototype to Atlanta, the band did a 4 hour U-turn back to Asheville. Borrowed the Moog guitar prototype that evening and then drove all night and all day to their next gig in Florida. The song Moog Improv #1 from that session appears on the DISCOVERY CD.

The CD’s extensive liner notes paint a fascinating picture of the many ways that The Moog Guitar’s innovations were used to advantage in the creation of this work. In addition to Fareed’s offbeat performance notes, Moog synth wiz Eric Levy describes how he created many of the electronica influenced tracks by manipulating Moog Guitar recording clips in Ableton Live.

“I have long been a fan of Fareed, Eric and Garaj Mahal – both for their incredible musicianship and who they are as people.” said Cyril Lance, Moog Chief Technical Alchemist and resident blues guitarist. “As the Moog Guitar came to market, I knew Fareed would know what to do with this axe as he was instrumental in its development. I’m extremely proud of this CD by Garaj Mahal. It represents the best of collaboration and the unique link between us as inventors and the musicians who use our instruments. Fareed takes us on a seemingly effortless but breathtaking tour of the sonic landscape of the guitar supported by his colleagues. His ability to explore so many genres and bring new voices to each is extremely gratifying and inspiring.”

DISCOVERY is available on iTunes and other online music sources and on the Moog website at moogmusic.com/booksandmusic.

Michelle Moog-Koussa and the Moog Voyager

Image of Michelle Moog-Koussa of the Bob Moog Foundation with her father's creation, the Moog Voyager. I asked Michelle if I could put this image up and she gave me the OK. The image means something special to Michelle, and it also represents something extremely important to the synth community. When I asked Michelle if I could put this up she replied, "Sure. Can I just say how amazing it is for me to sit behind that synth -- a synth that represents the culmination of a 50 year career, and have it mean something? Wow. This job keeps me humble."

Michelle's response keeps me humble. The image not only represents the legacy of Bob Moog carried through his instruments, but also through Michelle and the Bob Moog Foundation. The Voyager and Moog Music will continue the legacy of Bob Moog's instruments, while the Bob Moog Foundation will continue his spirit, history and influence in people's lives. This is extremely important. The foundation not only keeps the memory of Bob Moog alive, it has a positive impact for the community by educating and inspiring people of all ages into our world of synths. Without Michelle the foundation would not exist. We would have the instruments but not the museum, the archives and the outreach programs. Think about that for a bit.
