Acid, pings & alien voices | Nekyia Circuits Root Locus VCF

video upload by Tom Churchill

"Root Locus is an analogue filter from Nekyia Circuits, a new manufacturer based in Greece. It’s a 12dB/octave multimode design that’s based on the classic Serge VCFQ - but it adds a couple of unique twists, like the two audio inputs with a voltage-controlled crossfader, and a variable mode output with CV input.

In this video, I explore some of the weird and wonderful things you can do with it. A lot of these techniques can be applied to other filters too - you might just need one or two extra modules in some cases - so as always, you’ll hopefully get some ideas you can apply to whatever you’re using."

via Nekyia Circuits

"Root Locus is an analog 12dB/octave multimode filter, based on the CGS512 VCFQ filter. It adds a dual input crossfading mixer with gain control and a variable mode output with cv control for sweeps between filter modes, aiming for an extensive tonal variety! It also features a Ping input that allows for an impressively wide variety of percussive sounds. The sub range switch makes it a very versatile CV filter too, able to filter control voltages as well as transforming it to an interesting quadrature LFO while in self oscillation."

Doctor Mix & Anthony Check Out the PWM Mantis Synth | NAMM 2024

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"Join me and my good buddy Doctor Mix as we explore one of the most talked about synthesizers at NAMM 2024. It won't be difficult to discover how much fun we're having checking it out for the first time. I can see that there is still a lot to unpack about this synth and I'm looking forward to doing just that. Please stay on the lookout and tune in to AMM for a much more in-depth look at this super fun and great sounding instrument. It's part of a special family of synthesizers that were all designed with much love. PWM Mantis is a collaboration between the late Chris Huggett (EDP Gnat, EDP Wasp, OSCar) and PWM (Paul Whittington). A hybrid-analog synthesizer, Mantis utilizes mathematically-generated oscillators with a pure analog signal path and a modernized design architecture based on the EDP Wasp with an OSCar-style filter. It is also duophonic, with two fully independent voices, and features dual multi-mode filters that can be combined in series or parallel. Fully featured, Mantis is equipped with an arpeggiator, 37-note full-size semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch, multi-function joystick, and MIDI/USB control for easy integration with any studio or live environment.

A Salty Eurorack Filter with BAGS of Character // Neptune by Winterbloom & Decapod Devices

video upload by DivKid

"Meet Neptune, a salty sea dog of a Eurorack module, dripping in character from Winterbloom & Decapod Devices. It's a diode ladder filter with an added 'salt' control, which is a feedback-modulated distortion (I show you exactly what this is AND how to add it to your own filters/patches in the video).

It's a multimode filter that instead of giving different filter mode outputs gives inputs to them, which allows for flexible spectral morphing between two inputs, dual band saturation and tilt EQ FX and plenty more, lots of patches below, take a look.

As part of this video I sat down to chat with Carson Walls of Decapod Devices. Short parts of that interview are in this video, but you can watch the full thing here [video below]."

Quad Multimode Filter & Morphing Scanner Bank // Atlas by Vostok Instruments

video upload by DivKid

"I really love the approach of Vostok Instruments where they’re building out modules that not only sound great, but that offer multiple channels of the same functions. In modular you often need more, and not particularly more variety, but more of the same functions to push creativity and deeper levels of patching.

Atlas is a set of 4 multimode filters (low pass, high pass, band pass), with clever normalisations, dual modulation inputs per channel, a ‘classic synths of Japan in the 80s’ inspired sound PLUS you get an interpolating scanner bank that will morph between the four filter outputs. It’s an impressive thing that’s been a delight to play and patch with.

As always I hope the video provides you patches to explore Atlas and other filters and functions in your own systems."

Update: new video from Stazma:

Atlas Eurorack Module Demo | Gear Talk w/ Vostok Instruments

07:39 My first patch with Atlas
08:11 Four voice poly synth patch
11:23 Funky Bass & vowels
14:01 Ping it!
14:54 Stereo patch
17:17 Ambient w/ Torso T-1
18:14 Drum machine patch
21:34 End talk

Mini press release follows:

"Atlas is the latest addition to our range of multi-channel modules, a fully analog, four-channel multimode filter.

The cores are a modern approach to the gain-cell-based filters included in many of the classic Japanese synths of the 80s, with a vastly improved dynamic range, a super-accurate resonance compensation circuit, and a clean self-oscillation. It is perfect for recreating iconic TR-drum sounds by pinging the filters with fast envelopes or triggers.

In addition to the four filters, the module counts with a dedicated Interpolating Scanning Circuit that morphs between all the filter outputs to create new shapes and timbres."

User Manual

Additional details via Vostok Instruments:

When we talk about the sound signature of synths, filters are probably one of the first topics appearing.

On Atlas, we dive into the sound of the 80s Japanese classics with four gain-cell-based multimode filters that keep the silky and creamy sound of those legendary machines along with some technical improvements like a better noise floor, an accurate resonance compensation, and a daisy-chain input implementation that makes some patching techniques like parallel filtering a lot easier.

The filter cores have been carefully designed and tweaked to be pristine without losing character. With three filter modes available per channel, 4p-LP, 2p-HP, and 4p-BP, Atlas can cover almost any filtering technique, from superb filter sweeps to multi-slope resonant patches.

Thanks to its precise resonance circuit, each core creates a clean sine wave when self-oscillating. Excite the inputs with fast trigger or gate signals, and you will get TR-like drum sounds, from deep kickdrums to nice toms and congas.

In addition, the module counts with a CV-controlled Interpolating Scanner circuit that morphs softly between each filter output, creating new shapes and timbres as it fades between the channels.

Features
Four analog multimode, gain-cell-based VCF circuits.
Three modes per channel: 4p-LP, 2p-HP, and 4p-BP.
Resonance compensation circuit.
Daisy-chained audio and Freq inputs.
Secondary CV input, selectable between Frequency or Resonance.
CV-controlled Interpolating Scanner circuit.

Two New Modules from Bubblesound Instruments

via Bubblesound Instruments

First up we have the SeM20st.

The SeM20st is a stereo version of the first module bubblesound put out, the SeM20. It has become one of the classic filters in the EurorackWorld. The SeM20st is the most versatile analog stereo filter on the market today.

The inputs on the Left side are all normalized to the Right, so one input can be turned into a stereo signal. There is an Offset for the Left Cutoff, this allows a wider stereo field and is especially useful if the input is coming from a mono source. The CV inputs on the Left can also control the Cutoff and Resonance of the Right side. The Right side CV Cutoff pot is an attenuvertor, when it's at noon it's off, turn clockwise from noon the pot acts like a normal attenuator, gradually adding the CV to the Cutoff. When it's turned counter-clockwise from noon the CV is inverted, acting like an inverted ADSR.This can be used with a single LFO into the Left Cutoff CV to create a sort of ping-pong with the 2 sides, as the Cutoff goes up on one side it goes down on the other.

The Resonance section is exactly the same as in the SeM20, but with the Stereo version the Resonance is controlled by a VCA, allowing for CV control of the Resonance. The Resonance CV will work with either an LFO or an Envelope.

Outputs: Channel has 4 outputs available:
Low, Band, High and Notch Passes.
The Notch Balance pot sweeps from Low Pass to High Pass and can produce some really nice phasing.

width: 10HP

current draw: +45mA -35mA depth: 35MM

Next we have the SpringVerb

The SpringVerb is a classic analog Spring Reverb Driver with a few extras.

The input signal goes into a state variable filter that is capable of self-oscillation.Then the filtered signal goes to the reverb driver, into the tank and back to a Voltage Controlled Crossfader for a CV-able Wet/Dry.The switch under the filter select switch determines what goes into the "Dry" side of the Crossfader. It can either be pre or post filter.

There is a Voltage Controlled Feedback section as well as CV for the Cutoff Frequency and the Resonance of the filter section.

The Feedback does exactly what it says, it feeds the Post Tank signal back into the input section. It can go from very subtile to guitar and amp style feedback.

The Filter is very similiar to the SeM20, so the Resonance is aggressive. The input can be overdriven a little, depending on what the input is. Unlike the SeM20 it doesn’t really clip, but just like the SeM20 when the input is low and the Resonance is high most of what comes out is Sine waves.

Outputs: Filtered, Reverb Only and Mix

Tank:The SpringVerb comes with a medium decay, 3 spring tank and is compatible with many others.

width: 10hp

current draw: +43mA. -30mA

depth - 45MM with RCA cables plugged in

Abstrakt Avalon MOD ENV sidechain tips and tricks

video upload by manmade madman

"The MOD ENV on the Avalon can be super useful as a sidechain for 4 on the floor music. In this use, it will duck the audio on the steps that its triggers.
The MOD ENV is a simple Attack/Decay envelope which you can use on the filter or VCA. You need to adjust the Attack/Decay according to the tempo, and you can get syncopated things going on which aren't possible on a standard Roland TB-303.
Near the end of the video, it can also become a "reverse" sound as it sweeps in slower than the normal attack."

Create an industrial drone synth on the LXR-02

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Is it an industrial drone synth? Maybe it's an interactive FM sequencer? It's certainly droney with FM sweeps and industrial grind and that's just one variant. Here I create a single synth voice which is then fed with synced LFO modulation. What's most important here is the technique rather than the specific result. My version has a 16-step melodic pattern, but with a few tweaks you could create a retriggering playable voice, or a much slower evolving noisescape using the random LFO waveform. I'm also just using the first voice, but the snare, clap and metal engines have their own flavors and modulatable parameters as well. I was going to look into them as well as quickly creating different melodic "starter" sequences but this was already getting a bit long for something a bit niche. Let me know if you want to go there :D

Finally, from the programming you'll see how easily the LXR performs as a synth. It certainly wasn't my intention to concentrate on the "LXR as a synth" idea, but synthy things start to slip out very easily once you're in the mode.

Lambda Synthetics PolyPulse Now on Kickstarter

introduction video upload by Lambda Synthetics

"Lambda Synthetics today launches their Kickstarter campaign for the PolyPulse, the algorithmic performance workstation which combines the playfulness and performability of physical instruments with the precision and sonic detail of digital music production techniques into a single package!"

PolyPulse workflow overview

Ward Slager performing live with the PolyPulse

You might remember Lambda's PolyPulse from SUPERBOOTH23. They are now on Kickstarter seeking funding.

Details captured for the archives:

The PolyPulse is an algorithmic performance workstation which combines the playfulness and performability of physical instruments with the precision and sonic detail of digital music production techniques into a single package!

Its 5 tracks each have an algorithmic sequencer, a polyphonic sound engine of your choice, customizable audio effects chain and morphing touch pad. The algorithmic sequencer allows you to easily create long evolving rhythms and melodies. With the touchpads you can fluently morph between four presets per track to create expressive and dynamic changes in sound and texture.

The PolyPulse has four audio inputs which can be sampled, and has eight audio outputs allowing for various routings including individual outputs per track or spatialized multi-speaker setups. It can be synced using MIDI, sample accurate clock signals and it even talks Open Sound Control. MIDI can be used to control sequence synthesizers and CC messages morph sounds on your favorite synthesizer module!

Key features

The PolyPulse can already do a lot! In the following section we're outlining what the current firmware is capable of, but we hope to be adding features in the years to come! Algorithmic sequencer

With the PolyPulse you create rhythms using an algorithmic sequencer controlled by a set of parameters. This allows you to quickly create a variation on a groove by turning just a single knob. Melodies are created using 'note lists'. When a note is triggered by the sequencer, it picks a pitch from the note list and sends that to the sound engine. Due to the separation between rhythms and melodies you can mix and match to try out new combinations and to discover wonderful sequences.

Morphing and mixing

With the touchpads you can have expressive control over all sound engine and audio effects parameters. On each corner of a touchpad a sound can be stored. These sounds can be modified on-the-fly, or prepared beforehand and stored in the project.

Each track also has a dedicated volume knob and effects sends knob. The effects send can be routed internally, or you can send signal to your favorite external effects processor!

"Eternal v2 is a barber-pole flanger effect designed and developed by Sinevibes. Available as AAX/AU/VST plugin for Mac and Windows. Product page: https://www.sinevibes.com/eternal"

"Eternal is a barber-pole flanger effect plugin. Unlike a traditional flanger which has its tone repeatedly go up and down, a barber-pole flanger goes upwards or downwards in a seemingly endless fashion. To accomplish this unique effect, Eternal employs a thoroughly calibrated low-frequency oscillator with six output signals which modulate and crossfade three flangers – and they do this in a very special way. Since these oscillators have a “through-zero phase” design, Eternal can go from downwards to upwards motion and back completely seamlessly. With two distinct timbres available thanks to positive or negative feedback, this plugin produces a wide variety of delicious spectrum sweeps – plus unusual chorus, pitch shift, and stereo widening effects.
