Patrick Moraz Shares Sounds and Sights in Honor of Bob's 75th Birthday

via The Bob Moog Foundation
"Today marks Bob's 75th birthday. Thursday night we celebrated his life and legacy at the Orange Peel in Asheville at Enter the Mind of Moog: Celebrating Bob's 75th Birthday with a live recording session, interactive exhibits, the installation of the MiniMoogseum and much more. Hundreds of enthusiastic attendees joined us and enjoyed a sonic playground replete with Theremins, Moogerfoogers and synthesizers. Wheat Williams, one of our steadfast volunteers, came up from Atlanta to attend the event and blogged live from our site. Check out his reports here. Thanks to all of the volunteers, musicians and attendees for making the evening a fitting tribute and a great success.

Today we celebrate Bob's birthday with Patrick Moraz, a brilliant musician, long-time Moog user and Bob's close friend. In honor of Bob's 75th birthday, Patrick has offered to share some of his life's work to help support the Bob Moog Foundation and celebrate the life of the pioneer that helped shape his sound. Patrick (Mainhorse, Refugee, Yes, Moody Blues) has had a long career marked by prolific performing and composing in genres that stretch from progressive rock to electronica to jazz fusion.

Patrick, who was has been a Moog endorser throughout his career, has played many a Moog and was the owner of a rare dual manual minimoog which he had designed to his own specifications and which he played from 1975, specifically for the Relayer tour with Yes until the end of the 80s while still in The Moody Blues, as well as for all his solo-albums recordings.

In his rise as a virtuoso keyboardist in the mid-70s, Patrick worked closely with Bob testing the Polymoog and Macromoog. He visited the Moog Music factory, then located in Williamsville, NY and Bob visited Patrick in Switzerland to help him with the programming and tweaking of the Polymoog for Patrick's upcoming album Story of I.

Today we are offering a rare and wonderful photo of Bob and Patrick during that period of collaboration. In this particular photo, Bob and Patrick are walking through a field behind the Williamsville factory on their way to Patrick's photoshoot with the Macromoog and Polymoog. Patrick has the Macromoog prototype slung over his shoulder. To view the photo, and others from that day, please see our blog.

In February, Patrick released his most recent album Change of Space. Patrick notes "Change of Space" is a collection of songs and instrumental pieces not previously released which I finished composing, recording, mixing and polishing over a period of about 14 years."
The CD offers three piece instrumentals as well as collaborative works with other highly regarded musicians.

In honor of Bob's 75th birthday, we are offering Patrick's Change of Space and the photo of Bob and Patrick walking through the field with the Macromoog, autographed by Patrick for a donation of $75.00. Donate here today; availability is limited to the first 25 people.

"Dear Bob, wherever you are in the Cosmos, I wish you a very Happy Birthday and a great ride on the "centrifugal beaches of Infinity", on Your Journey around and across the Universe!
You have definitely left an indelible mark on my mind and your sensitivity in all things humans always fascinated me, especially for a scientist and inventor of your caliber!" Happy 75th Birthday, my Friend!"

Update: Note the reference to Macromoog, not Micromoog. I confirmed that this was not a typo and indeed was a prototype Macromoog. "According to Patrick, this is indeed a mAcromoog. Patrick says this came out the same time as the Poly, and he's not sure it was ever formally released. He bought one, and used it for a long time. He assures me this is not a Micro--which was much more popular." Update: "It was never really released because the poly was released at the same time and their efforts went into that."

Rare Moog Macromoog

See the reference to the Macromoog in this post. I originally thought it might have been a typo for Micromoog as there is no Macromoog. It turns out it actually is a rare prototype Macromoog. Comments disabled here to keep them there.

Arturia KeyStep 37 Chords with Scale Quantizer Demo (Feat Novation Peak Synth & Boss DD-8 Delay)

Sound Provider

Update: moved this post up as I had a typo in the video ID. It should play now.

"After my video about the "One finger Chord" with Arturia KeyStep 37 controller & Sequencer Keyboard ( below ) some people asked me how the keyboard manages chords with the scale quantizer , because doing maj 7 (for exemple) on every key is cool (and lot of good house or rave tracks we were made that way) but most of the time it's better to have chords that fit with the scale you use.
So I did this quick exemple , hope it can help some of you.
Little reminder, on Chord mode you can choose 12 differents chords type and on the Scale Quantizer you can choose between Chromatic /Major/Minor/Blues and User Scale.
For this video I also use the Novation Peak Synth and the Boss DD-8 delay.

Voila.

Leonard de Leonard"

Futurama: Moogfest vs Simpsons: Hapsichordfest

This one spotted by creekreee who had the following to say:

"The Futurama Facebook page posted a short video called 'Happy backwards day'. This is essentially the intro to each show, with a special intro music that was used on only one episode.

The video is horizontally mirrored, thus the caption, which is unique for each episode, is not as easily readable.

I took a screenshot and mirrored it again - and guess what?

The caption says

Futurama: Moogfest
as
Simpsons: Hapsichordfest"

I found that interesting and thought I´d share it with you. (I guess there is a typo in there.. 'as' should probably read 'vs')"

Mighty Coupigny modular

via Fabrique
from Matmos:
"the 'Coupigny' modular synthesizer housed in the INA/GRM studios at RadioFrance in Paris and used extensively by some of the titans of
musique-concrete."

Update via Fabrique:
"It seems so as many composers in residence at GRM have recently requested to use it after it was unearthed by composer Christian Zanesi. Built in 66, it has been used by Parmegiani (La Roue Ferris), Bayle, Berio, Schaeffer... (in french) [and Googlish]

And it appears he also built a video effect unit used by Martial Raysse and other artists (Note : Francois not Francis might be a typo):

"1968 - Creation of the GRI (Groupe de Recherche Image) at the ORTF under the direction of Pierre Schaeffer. François Coupigny develops the "truqueur universel" (universal special effects device), which is used by Martial Raysse, Peter Foldès, and Jean-Paul Cassagnac for attempts at coloring the video image from black-and-white images."

http://newmedia-arts.net/english/reperes-h/60.htm

Another article that mentions Francis Coupigny:
"The two most brilliant technicians who worked with Pierre Schaeffer were Francis Poullin, in the early 1950s, who developed the phonogène and the morphophone, and Francis Coupigny, in the 1960s, who created the console and the integrated synthesiser."

Published on Apr 15, 2015 The Tuesday Night Machines

That is not a typo in the title. Think of the testing that went into the new module.

"Italian Eurorack Modular Synth maker soundmachines brought some fun prototypes to Musikmesse 2015. One of them converts your breath's alcohol content into control voltage. Surely a hit at parties!

Synths + Pedals: Vintage Boss DSD-3 & RV-3 as delay/Reverb w/ analogue MiniMod Eurorack synth

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"Trying out 2 80’s/90’s Boss guitar pedals on simple synth notes using the 3-VCO MiniMod voice from AJH Synth for some fat Minimoog sound. This video was mainly to hear what the delay of the DSD-3 sounds like, but I thought I’d add the RV-3 on the end of the signal for some reverb too, to keep it all-guitar pedal. No post-processing, just the raw output of the pedals.
The 1987 Boss DSD-3 is apparently internally identical to the 1985 DSD-2, and shares the ‘long chip’ of the rack-mount SDE-3000. Here I’m just using it as a delay effect, but I’ll experiment with the sampling function in a future video. Excuse the typo in the on-screen titles - this was an 80's pedal, not 90's.
The 1994 Boss RV-3 however is quite a lot different from the 1987 RV-2 - a later and more advanced processor, so it’s bound to sound a little more modern, although it does seem to have that vintage digital metallic quality to the reverb tails sometimes, at least to my failing ears.
You buy these pedals for their character, not their realism, but for me they’re also pedals I wanted when I was a broke teenage guitarist back in the day, so there’s nostalgia and curiosity in them too.
The Synth: The MiniMod is a Eurorack modular synth system, accurately based on the vintage circuitry of the original R.A. Moog Minimoog. It has that huge, rich, warm sound, but with the open architecture/flexibility that modular offers.

PPG Wave 2.2

flickr set by krunkwerke

Update via Qwave in the comments: "Notice the missprint above the lower right knob:
ENV_F_LOPE

My PPG wave 2.2 had the very same print. And I know of several others. Do all PPG waves 2.2 have this error?
The PPG wave 2.3 does not have this error."

Update via Steamy Vicks in the comments: "Check the parameter list under the display - VELOSITY. Another error.

My 2.2 has the envelope typo too, so yes - from what I've seen, all 2.2 models have these errors. The 2.3 models do not."

New May releases from Plan b

Via Peter Grenader of Plan b:

"There are a few suprises coming for the month of May which include the release of THREE NEW PRODUCTS above and beyond the Model 26, and a major re-design of another module that's been released for some time. Included in these will be the Model 15A, the Model 28 and 28A

Model 28?

That's not a typo! The M28 has been kept a secret, even at Namm and Musikmesse... but not for much longer.

Keep an eye on the EAR site where they'll all be announced and released over the next four or so weeks.

Don Martin Moog Modules

images via this auction

The infamous Don Martin Moog modular. For those that do not know the story, Don Martin obtained the rights to the MOOG name after the company went under and while Bob Moog was doing business as Big Briar. Bob Moog eventually won his name back, but not without having to fight for it. You can see a letter from Bob regarding the name in this post. Be sure to click on the Donimoog or Don Martin link at the bottom of this post for more. The "Donimoog" refered to the Don Martin Minimoog. You can see some in the prior posts.
The modules in these auctions are an interesting bit of synth history.

Modules listed (note the first 901A nd 910 power supply are genuine RA Moog):

1 x '71 Moog Modular 901A Osc Controller Module
1 x RA MOOG 910 power supply
2 x MOOG 901A / Don Martin 9501B
2 x MOOG 911 / Don Martin 9511
1 x MOOG 902 / Don Martin 9502
1 x MOOG 904A / Don Martin 9504A

Note the Don Martin modules added the 5 after the 9. Also note the 901A is a 9501B? Not sure if that was a typo in the auction or the correct labeling per Don Martin.

Walking on the Clouds ;)

Published on Dec 28, 2015 Alba Ecstasy

"This video is about Clouds. This famous (sorry about the first typo - geeez) texture synthesiser.
You don’t even need a serious audio input to feed it, because it’s capable of amazing this by itself. Still:

I used the self oscillation of Ripples to generate the sound, where Cutoff is modulated by Z3000 as LFO with square and Resonance with sawtooth.

The sine of Z3000 is also feeding the FM of Ripples.

I used BP2 and LP4 to feed (through the DVCA) Clouds’ inputs.

Doepfer’s gate, through MFB ADSR is controlling Freeze and Position.
Doepfer’s CV out is controlling the Clouds’ Pitch.

LFO Z3000’s sine to Clouds’ Texture and triangle to Density.
Recorded in Logic Pro."
