Future Retro Announces Release of New Mondovox Product

"The Mondovox provides new ways to play, control, and breathe new life into MIDI sound modules. The Mondovox allows you to play up to 16 monophonic synthesizers polyphonically, in ways you would expect to find in features-laden polysynths, and also expanding upon those ideas for many new and exciting possibilities such as three new detune modes for creating truly massive sounds.

Although it's designed to play multiple monosynths (such as our popular XS semi-modular synthesizer), the Mondovox can be used with any monophonic, polyphonic, multitimbral or single voice, analog, digital, virtual synthesizers or samplers.... it doesn't matter, as long as it has MIDI.

With the plethora of inexpensive monophonic synthesizers being manufactured at this time, we believe the Mondovox is the ideal solution to expand their capabilities to include new polyphonic possibilities.

We are now taking pre-orders, and expect the first orders to begin shipping in as soon as 1 week.

List price is $300 USD.

Each unit comes with a universal power supply that can operate at 100~240V mains voltages, and includes an assortment of power plugs for various countries.

For more information, please vist the Mondovox product page at:
http://www.future-retro.com/mondovoxoverview.html"

Additional details and specs for the archives:

"The Modovox takes polyphonic MIDI data and translates it to so that each voice is on its own MIDI channel.

There are nine different polyphonic modes of operation:

UNISON: Stack up to 16 voices to play in unison for one big sound. Unlike traditional polysynths that only allow you to play a single note while in unison mode, the Mondovox allows you to play up to 16 notes simultaneously, creating huge unison chords. Obviously, this will depend on the available voices in the sound module you are controlling. While digital and virtual analog synths usually provide high voice counts to support these unison chords, controlling analog monosynths in this way will activate their auto-glide portamento circuitry.

UNISON DETUNE: Three Unison Detune modes -- detune down, detune up/down, and detune up -- allow you to play up to 16 notes in unison, as well as detune all voices to varying degrees simply by moving the pitch bender. Once you discover this feature, you will wonder how you ever made music without it. As you increase the pitch bender value, small amounts of detune will create "true chorus" effects, unlike traditional cyclic DSP chorusing effects. Increase the pitch bender more to discover that you can make any sound module take on that "super saw"-like quality, although obviously you're not limited to just sawtooth waveforms. Increase the pitch bender even more and sounds take on buzzing swarm effects, and finally as you move into extreme settings, a dark side reveals itself, producing eerie dissonant sound effects perfect for any scary movie. Releasing the pitch bender retains the degree of detuning so you're free to concentrate on playing and tweaking your sounds. Moving the pitch bender in the negative range will then clear the detune setting, bringing all voices back into perfect unison.

Just like in Unison mode, you can play up to 16 of these detuned unison voices polyphonically, so long as your sound module supports that many voices. By the way, that's 256 voices, for those wondering. Let's just say you haven't experienced "phat" until you've tried the Mondovox!

Another interesting fact about these detune modes is that you can detune the voices, then select a different polyphonic mode in the Mondovox and it will remember the detuning for each voice. This capability creates a wonderfully simplistic way to get boring "perfectly tuned" digital synths out of their static element and into new experimental territory.

UNISON POLY: In this mode, playing a single note will cause all active voices to play in unison. Playing a second note will reassign half the voices to the new note value, and playing additional notes will further allocate the available voices as evenly as possible between the number of notes currently being played. Unison Poly mode allows the overall weight of a musical part to remain fairly consistent when alternating between playing single notes and chords.

DON'T PANIC: If you are an intergalactic traveller you probably already know what this mode is for. However for those of you who aren't, it's simply a means for you to stay calm if the sound module you are controlling is not be able to comprehend the large amounts of MIDI data the Mondovox is capable of producing. In other words, it sends an "All Notes Off" MIDI message to clear voices should they become latched. Selecting the proper processor routing mode (mentioned later), will usually elliminate the need for such panic.

POLY RANDOM: Poly Random mode allows notes played to be randomly sent to 1 of up to 16 voices, adding more variation from one note to the next when similar sounds are played. You may also assign different sounds to each MIDI channel within a sound module, and this mode will then randomly play those different sounds at the current pitch.

POLY CHASE: This mode plays one available voice after another sequentially. Sometimes this is referred to as "round robin." Poly Chase ensures that if you play a single note repeatedly, that it will sound slightly different with each new key press. In addition, the Mondovox lets you use this mode as a psuedo sequencer, allowing you to play different sounds sequentially on different MIDI channels. You can set the loop point from 1 to 16 steps by the number of voices you define. The Mondovox will reset to begin playing voice 1 each time you select this mode.

POLY FIRST: Poly First mode always plays voice 1 first, and as more notes are played simultaneously, voices 2, 3, 4, etc. will sound. Repeatedly playing and releasing a single note will allow voice 1 to play only. This feature allows the voices played to be more predictable with repeatable results.

CHORD MEM: While in Poly First mode, you can play and hold up to 16 notes, and switch to the Chord Memory selection to latch the chord into memory. You can then play that same chord by playing a single note on your MIDI controller. The root of the latched chord will be the first note you played while in Poly First mode. Not only can you play chords with single keys, you can play up to 16 transpositions of this chord by playing up to 16 keys. Of course this will be limited by the number of available voices in the sound module you are controlling.

DEFINE VOICES: When in Define Voices mode, you can enter the number of voices to be enabled by simply tapping a key on your MIDI controller once for each voice. The number of voices defined will remain in memory even when the unit is turned off.

DEFINE ROUTING: This mode determines how MIDI is handled by each of the four internal MIDI processors. Routing 1 allows each of the four processors to play all 16 MIDI channels -- useful when controlling a multitimbral sound module and you only need to use a single MIDI output. However, you could connect up to 16 multitimbral sound modules to play giant stacks of up to 256 voices at once using all available MIDI Out ports. Routing 2 assigns each processor to handle four MIDI channels in sequential order, allowing faster MIDI timing than the Routing 1 option while still maintaining easy routing when using lower voice counts. Routing 3 assigns each processor to handle every fourth MIDI channel, provideing the fastest MIDI timing, as four notes can be sent over MIDI simultaneously. The routing selection is stored in memory even when power is turned off.

The Mondovox will detect the MIDI channel of the first note it receives after being powered on, and it will automatically set the incoming MIDI channel to that value.

A universal DC power supply is provided with each unit, that can operate anywhere in the world.

Each Mondovox is handmade in the USA using only the finest components, with a great deal of attention going into every unit. A rugged all-steel chassis makes this unit nearly indestructible, and the unique finishing technique used on the brushed stainless steel front panels is truly an industry first.

Although simple in its design with only a single control, the Future Retro Mondovox offers an amazing range of possibilities!
A must-have piece for any MIDI user."

"Some people think house music is all about pink drinks and afterglow.
It's not. It's about soul. And part of the soul that needs to be explored is pain.
The wake up call that tells you are alive, and what you care about in life.
The constant reminder of a deeper place where wrong is so right.
Welcome to the Haus of Pain, where the strings are life and the bass is strife."

WMD Triple Bipolar VCA Eurorack Module

Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS)

"The WMD Triple Bipolar VCA, the input side expansion for our Phase Displacement Oscillator. This module provides dedicated inverting/polarizing/bipolar amplitude modulating inputs normaled to the Phase Modulation inputs on the PDO.

A bipolar VCA is like a normal VCA when operated with positive control voltage. But when using a negative control voltage, the output will swing back past zero amplitude and invert the signal coming out. This produces deeper modulation than a normal VCA.

The Triple Bipolar VCA is also designed to be used as a standalone module, it does not require the PDO to operate.

Controls and I/O

+ In - This is the normal input for each VCA channel. It drives the inverting side of the Bipolar VCA. These inputs are normaled from outputs on the PDO.

- In - This is the second input for the VCA channel. Normaled through this jack is the inverted signal from the + Input. Plugging in here converts the channel from a Bipolar VCA to a crossfader, blending between the + and - inputs. When in crossfade mode, both inputs and the output are non-inverted.

CV - This input jack drives the CV knob. It can handle unipolar or bipolar signals.

Out - This is the output of each VCA channel. They are normaled to the Phase Modulation inputs on the PDO.

Bias Knob - Sets the manual gain for the VCA. Centered will have a zero output in bipolar mode, and 50%/50% of both + and - inputs in crossfade mode.

CV Knob - This knob is a bipolar attenuator for the signal applied to the CV jack. Spin clockwise from center for positive CV interactions, counterclockwise to invert the CV.

Mix Out - This output jack mixes the signals from each VCA.

Features

Three Bipolar VCAs
Normaling to PDO
Linear Response
Bipolar Attenuator for CV
Mix Output Sums All Three VCAs
Bi-color Signal LED
"-" Input for Crossfading"

Frequency Central Waverider Digital VCO Eurorack Module

Perfect Circuit Audio (RSS)

"The Waverider Digital VCO is a wavetable VCO with lots of features from voltage controlled interpolation to modulated bit crushing.

Frequency The Frequency CV input accepts 0-5V control voltages, quantized to semitones, to cover the MIDI note range 0-63. It is possible to limit the CV input with the CV attenuator. The basic frequency range of the VCDO is ten octaves from MIDI Note 0 to MIDI Note 120 (8.18Hz to 8372Hz), and can be selected by the manual Frequency knob.

Detune The Detune CV input is not quantised, and allows for -5V to +5V CV to modulate +/-8 semitones. The manual Detune knob allows adjustments to be made +/-100 cents.

Waveform The VCDO section has 16 waveforms which you’re unlikely to have seen before, arranged as a wavetable. The VCDO is able to crossfade from one to the next, creating a wavetable which you can scan through under voltage control, -5V to +5V. It would have been easy to include standard waveforms like ramps and triangles, but there are many oscillators that produce those. This oscillator has its own character and provides something different.

Sub Wave As well as the main oscillator, there is also a sub oscillator with 8 waveforms. Each waveform can be selected at one of four octaves, either +1 octave (above the main osc pitch!), in unison, -1 octave, or -2 octaves. Additionally, the Sub Wave can be selected externally by CV, -5V to +5V.

Glide Waverider also includes a glide/portamento effect, glide times range from 12ms/octave to 2.4secs/octave. Turning the Glide knob to minimum switches the glide effect off. Additionally, Glide can be externally controlled by any gate source, 0V = Glide off, 5V = Glide on.

Crush The Crush knob controls the sample bit resolution of the output (ie bitcrushing). This can be reduced from 8-bit down to 1-bit in eight steps.

VCDO and Sub Osc Outputs 8-bit, 62.5KHz sample output rate. The internal waveforms and calculations are 8-bit, and new samples are output via the on-chip PWM modules at 62.5KHz. The PWM modules’ outputs are at 125KHz.

"Continuum looks and acts rather like a VCF, in fact that’s exactly what a phaser is, an all-pass VCF. There’s far more to phasers than just sweeps up and down from an LFO, so Continuum has two CV inputs, so you can use a variety of CV sources simultaneously.

The topology of Continuum is 4 swept OTA all-pass filter stages with a fixed all-pass filter stage either side of the swept core. There’s a switch to select Regen over odd or even stages. Most phasers stick to odd stages, but there are undiscovered sonic possibilities using even stages of Regem.

Too, Rob now produces both the 'classic' version (with 1/4" jacks) and a version with a combination of banana jacks and 1/4" jacks. My unit (as can be seen in the photos) is the former, having only 1/4" jacks for all ins and outs. I never got 'round to using this unit, and purchased it solely for the uniqueness and exclusivity. There aren't too many around, and Rob only does small runs when enough orders are received to make it worthwhile. As far as I know, he does still produce the Blippoos, though there's typically an indefinite wait-period between runs. So said, this unit is as new, and in the exact condition as it was when received by me - no known issues whatsoever..."

But don't worry, if you can't manage to create the sounds you like, go and find a lot of great Presets in the built in Library, created by John Lehmkuh who used to work for Korg as a professional sound designer from 1988 - making patches, combinations, drum kits as well as creating the sample data for almost every synth Korg has released since the M1. And if you don't find your salvation here, go straight on to the Sunsine Audio Preset Library! For the other features: Audiobus, Sonoma AudioCopy, AudioShare, Open in, Core midi, Virtual Midi, Wist!
Ok! Did I forget something...?
Yes, I love it! I'm totally convinced by the sound types that you can generate with it!
A Must Have!"

"I build a four step sequencer from a couple of old relays and used this to switch between a couple of podmeters that control the speed of a cassette walkman.
Not sure what to call this, a sampler or a synth, well, doesn't really matter now, does it?
I think the last tape I used is actually not source material from me but from Machinefabriek."

Native Instruments announces MASCHINE STUDIO and MASCHINE 2.0 Software

Published on Oct 1, 2013

"Maschine is reborn: New flagship Maschine Studio, new Maschine 2.0 software. The ultimate groove is coming - get the full story: http://www.beat-these.com"

"Berlin, October 1, 2013 – Native Instruments today announced MASCHINE STUDIO and MASCHINE 2.0 – the new flagship groove production studio and next generation of MASCHINE software. Considerably bigger than the original hardware, MASCHINE STUDIO provides expanded tactile control and new hi-resolution color displays, setting a new precedent in intuitive, hands-on, computer-based beat production. As with the acclaimed MASCHINE and MASCHINE MIKRO, MASCHINE STUDIO is an integrated solution combining the latest software technology with a hardware-based workflow. MASCHINE 2.0 features a host of enhancements – including a new mixer page and dynamic drum synth plug-ins – designed to deliver more power and speed to all three MASCHINE production studios. MASCHINE STUDIO will be available at the NI Online Shop starting November 1, 2013. MASCHINE 2.0 is included with MASCHINE STUDIO and all MASCHINE and MASCHINE MIKRO products shipping on or after November 1, 2013.

Providing complete hardware control over virtually all software functions, MASCHINE STUDIO's workflow is centered on 16 highly-responsive multi-color backlit pads, a new Edit Section with jog wheel, a Level Section and two hi-resolution color displays – a major hardware advancement. The displays enable producers to focus on MASCHINE's hardware workflow, providing detailed visual feedback of the software's powerful features. When editing samples or working in MASCHINE's clip-based pattern sequencer, the displays show an overview of the full selection on the left screen while the right screen allows for detailed fine-tuning when slicing, editing, and composing. When browsing, the displays provide easy navigation and selection of projects, groups, sounds, instruments, effects, and samples with KOMPLETE Instruments and Effects product icons visible directly from the hardware.

A new Edit Section provides dedicated buttons and a jog wheel with LED indicators for visual feedback and enhanced functionality. The jog wheel allows quick adjustments to volume, tempo, and swing settings, and speeds up browsing and editing. The Level Section provides a convenient volume knob and a multi-purpose meter display for master, group, sound, and cue levels plus monitoring for up to four selectable input sources when a multi-channel audio interface is connected. Dedicated control buttons allow fast switching between MASCHINE STUDIO's sampler, arranger, mixer, and browser, and provide direct access to channel settings and an all-new plug-in strip. For producers already using external equipment, one MIDI input and three MIDI outputs allow MASCHINE STUDIO to function as a command hub, controlling all equipment from one comprehensive controller. On the underside of the unit, a highly sturdy, built-in collapsible stand provides the optimal angle for working with MASCHINE STUDIO.

MASCHINE 2.0 presents a major revision of Native Instruments' groove production software, delivering a host of powerful features to MASCHINE STUDIO, and both generations of MASCHINE, and MASCHINE MIKRO. A tag-based attribute browser makes samples and presets easy to find while the new plug-in strip make MASCHINE's internal plug-ins much more accessible by displaying their individual user interfaces instead of generic buttons and knobs. A brand-new, dedicated mixer page provides detailed level adjustment and flexible routing of MASCHINE 2.0's aux sends, plug-ins, and unlimited groups and insert effects. A new audio engine with multi-core technology adds sidechaining and allows higher instrument, effect, and plug-in counts, faster load times and more. High-quality 32-bit float internal summing delivers the latest advancements in professional sound quality.

Also new and exclusive to MASCHINE 2.0 are five drum synth plug-ins meticulously developed with Native Instruments' years of experience in software synthesis. Each instrument caters to a specific drum type, and delivers an easy-to-use interface. The plug-ins are capable of a wide range of sounds – from crisp and digital, to warm and analog, featuring accurate acoustic-sounding drums. Because they are based on synthesis, producers have a refined level of control over the sound of each drum. Not only are these plug-ins fully-adjustable and automatable directly from the MASCHINE hardware, they now add a signature sound aesthetic to the world of MASCHINE.

In addition to hosting any VST or Audio Units plug-in, MASCHINE 2.0 comes with an 8+ GB sound library of professional, production-ready sounds. Also included are full versions of Native Instrument's acclaimed MASSIVE synthesizer, the unique synthesizer for percussive and mallet sounds PRISM, the powerful compressor SOLID BUS COMP, and the meticulously sampled vintage electric piano SCARBEE MARK I, providing a versatile setup ready for any production task. MASCHINE can be used as a standalone on either MAC or PC systems, but also loads as a VST, Audio Units or AAX plug-in in all major DAWs for seamless integration with existing production environments. MASCHINE 2.0 software features batch export of full songs, groups, and single sounds in lossless WAV or AIFF formats in up to 32-bit/192kHz quality. Import of older MASCHINE projects, iMASCHINE projects, REX files, and MPC programs is also fully supported.

MASCHINE STUDIO is available for purchase at retailers worldwide and at the NI Online Shop from November 1, 2013 for $999 / 999 € / ¥ 104,800. MASCHINE 2.0 is included with MASCHINE STUDIO and all MASCHINE and MASCHINE MIKRO products shipping on or after November 1, 2013. Current MASCHINE users can purchase MASCHINE 2.0 on the NI Online Shop from November 1, 2013 for $99 / 99 € / ¥ 9,800. Customers who purchase MASCHINE or MASCHINE MIKRO between October 1, 2013 and November 1, 2013 will receive MASCHINE 1.8 with purchase and a free download for MASCHINE 2.0. They will be able to download the new software on November 1, 2013.
