Vintage Moog P2 Modular Synth (Rick Powell Collection)

via this auction

"This unit is part of the Rick Powell Collection. Rick was a musician, a major producer and a contemporary and close friend of Bob Moog, among others, and often received original units from manufacturers to test in the studios. Rick was my studio partner up until the day he passed away and his wife has asked me to sell some of the items that were studio kept for many years. There are many treasures in this collection and we will be adding them as they are photographed, tested and cataloged.

This is probably the crown jewel of the collection. The Moog P2 Modular Synthesizer. Rick used this very unit on his Choir Book LP and also the Switched On Country LP. You can see it in its full glory on the attached album photo. You can also read about the P2 and the other modular Moogs at synthmuseum.com

This synth has no power supply (that we could find among the storage area in their home). Perhaps if someone can show me a picture of what it's supposed to look like, we could find it more easily. Or perhaps it's not available. I've read that the power supplies that originally came with this unit weren't very reliable and many collectors have built their own. The unit has been kept in the home for many years. Stored in A/C. We have no idea what it needs in order to make sounds. Perhaps a few tubes and a power supply would get it going. You collectors will know more than I do about it. I can barely work a light switch.

This unit has the 950 keyboard (serial 2048) in very good condition. Also the 2 loaded banks, also in good condition built into the travel cases. The modules are 4 of the 902 voltage controller amplifiers, 2 of the 911 envelope generators, a 907 fixed filter bank, a 904-A voltage controlled low pass filter, a 904-B voltage controlled high pass filter, a 901-A oscillator controller, a 901-B oscillator, a 903 white sound source, a 901 voltage controlled oscillator and 2 of the mixer units. The cable that runs from the keyboard to the units and the cable that runs from unit to unit are there and look to be in fine condition.

Here's a little story about Rick you may enjoy. He told me that when he was in Nashville, RCA approached him about doing a series of albums to compete with Walter Carlos' LPs of Switched On Bach. Rick turned them down, thinking it wouldn't go over very well or pay very well. So RCA went to another synth artist named Tomita. Rick always laughed about how stupid he was to have turned that down. But being the good-natured optimist that he was, he kept working on the "next tech" device that would enhance people's ability to make music."

Frostwave Fat controller

via this auction

"Frostwave Fat controller plus power supply. These things are super cool for your modular gear, it has midi and cv/gate so you can really do a lot with it. I really liked using it to use sequence different CV inputs on a modular, really cool and sadly Frostwave isn't making these anymore..."

MOTU Volta Ships

Word on the street is that MOTU's Volta has officially shipped. I'm seeing the pre-order on Nova Musik listed at $199.

"Volta is a virtual instrument plug-in that turns your audio interface into a voltage control interface. Any hardware device with a control voltage (CV) input can be placed under precise digital control from your favorite audio workstation software. You can play and automate modulars, analog synths - even effects processors. Whether you’re a seasoned modular synthesizer devotee or simply a computer-based studio owner dreaming of adding that rich, coveted sound only true analog synths can deliver, Volta finally enables you to easily incorporate CV-equipped analog gear into your computer-based studio with all the control, precision and convenience of a virtual instrument." click here for previous posts including video

Yamaha SK15 Movement

via Adrien
"hi, as i told on a recent post about yamaha sk series it's possible to add some movement to sounds, and to make it remind vector synths (i mentionned prophet VS, but it's really exagerated, there are no magical trick to turn a poor organ into a great sounding synth) but i thought it was interesting to use that feature to make unusual sounds with that cheap organ i did it by adding similar sounds on strings part and synth part, using the filter enveloppe (i did not touch levers while playing) (since sounds are similar, some frequencies cancel, producing that kind of sound ...)
1. only the string sound
2. synth sound then, both"

"another example
maybe it's more interesting, i can't say ... (i added at the end the out of order SK ensemble, well, it barely works but should not be that noisy ....)

as information, the CS70M ensemble seemed identical to me (i used to have in my home long ago, among many other things, CS60/70/80 and SK 15/30)"

JH Variable Slope Filter/Phaser: Building a Prototype

Front panel of the JH Variable Slope Filter/Phaser first posted here and here.

notes from JH:
"Well, the first prototype was part of my JH-3 Modular, of course.
But for testing the PCB layout and fine-tuning the circuit for which I
intent to offer PCBs, I wanted to build a standalone effect. For this, I'm
using the same tabletop enclosure that I've used for my Wasp Filter Clone
some years ago. (Pultgehäuse from Conrad Electronic, Best. Nr. 520772 -
Manufacturer is APW)
The focus is on the on-board LFO modulation, so you won't find any
potentiometers for external CVs on this front panel. (The circuit allows a
lot of external CVs, of course.)

Here's a screenshot of the panel in Frontplattendesigner (Schaeffer):

http://www.jhaible.de/varislope_filter_phaser/varislope_proto_fpd.jpg
[pictured]

Input Level - Audio signal input level control
Feedback - Resonance Loop. Can burst into self-oscillation. Inverted or
non-inverted feedback for unusual effects.
Mix - Wet / Dry mix of filtered and unfiltered signal. Inverted or
non-inverted mix. Mandatory for phasing; interesting for LPF mode because of
phase cancellation effects.
Ouput Level - Output attenuator for audio signal
APF / LPF - Switches to change the function of the 6 filter stages from All
Pass Filter (Pole/Zero pairs) to Low Pass Filter (Poles only). 3 Switches
for 3 pairs. (6 individual switches would be possible as well.)
Mix / Filter - In "Filter" position the "Mix" potentiometer is disconnected
for 100% filter signal without any crosstalk from the dry signal (important
for powefull 36dB/Oct LPF effect).
Clean / Dirty - Dirty applies some dynamic load to the single-ended buffer
of the last filter stage.
Active / Bypass - True hard bypass
Slope - Spreads the pole frequencies of the individual stages. This means
less filter steepness in LPF mode (ccw end is 36dB/Oct), and wider notch
spacing in Phaser (APF) mode.
LFO Amount - Modulation amount of on-board LFO
LFO Wave - Crossfade between LFO waveshapes: Tringle -> Sine -> Square ->
Sample&Hold -> Audio-Rate Self-Modulation (see video).

Also possible, but not on Front panel:
Slope Control Voltage Input
LFO Amount Control Voltage Input
LFO Waveshape Control Voltage Input
LFO Rate Control Voltage Input
External Filter or Phase Control Voltage Input (for ADSR etc.)
External 1V/Oct Control Voltage Input (no tempco, though.)

Oberheim SEM Based DIY Synthesizer

via David Rogoff on Facebook
"couple of pictures from freshman year of college. This was a home-made synthesizer using a case I did the woodwork and plexiglass faceplate for. It used an Oberheim SEM inside, along with my keyboard electronics.
There are two wheels visible - the usual pitch/mod, plus a third wheel on the side next to the other two for filter mod. The idea was based on Jan Hammer's wearable Probe keyboard (weighed a ton!)."

MOOG SYSTEM 55

via this auction where you'll find more images. Details: "Here is probably the last Moog System 55 of this planet. This is a rare opportunity to buy this legendary monstrous modular synthesizer. The Moog modular was used by most of the world-famous composers like Keith Emerson, Hans Zimmer, Vangelis, Pete Namlook, Tangerine Dream (Klaus Schulze), Wendy Carlos and others pioneers... The Moog modular synthesizer offered musicians a revolutionary new way to produce sound when it was released in the 1960s. It was originally intended for use in recording studios and universities and was not intended for (or widely embraced by) musicians for use in live performance. The analog electronics of the system often made sound generation unreliable and unpredictable during live performances.

This System 55 come in excellent (Mint) conditions, all modules are perfect and original of course, no keyboard but you can drive the modular with midi to cv converter box or the new synthesizers.com keyboard.
As you can see in the photos the system has a rich configuration because it mount another 904A lowpass filter respect the standard system 55 release ...so there are 3x filters + Filter coupler AMAZING!!!"

360 SYSTEMS VINTAGE GUITAR SYNTHESIZER

via this auction
"For your consideration is this cool and very rare 360 Systems Slave Driver guitar synthesizer controller interface. This is one of the first units to allow a guitar player to access all of the sounds and sequences typically only available to the synthesizer world. With this unit, a guitar player is able to hook up a guitar to a CV input synthesizer using this controller. You simply run the Slave Driver between your guitar and your synthesizer and you are able to produce and manipulate all of the sounds on your synth with your guitar. This unit is great for any experimental guitar or synth player alike and a must have for the synthesizer collector. These units are extremely rare, and 360 systems equipment is very collectible. It does not include a guitar pickup."

KORG Polysix

via this auction
"Korg Polysix (61 keys) from 1981 in good condition. This is a true analog piece that sounds original. The Polysix has warm-sounding real analog oscillators, softer and brassy-er sounding that the Juno. Engage the built-in Chorus on a simple single-oscillator sawtooth patch and you were pretty darned close to that expensive Prophet sound. But the big ace in the Polysix's hand was the Ensemble effect. Instant Mellotron-like strings. 6 voice polyphony, 1 VCO per voice (saw, PW, PWM) + 1 sub-oscillator per voice, 1 LFO assignable to VCA,VCF or VCO. Chorus, phaser and ensemble effect. Really good Arpeggiator (Up, Down, Up/Down, Latch; Full, 2-oct, 1-oct; rate 0.2 to 20 Hz)"
