POLIVOKS (POLYVOX) - Rare, Soviet Era, 100% Analog Synthesizer

via this auction
"Duophonic analog synthesizer, with a 49-note (F-E) keyboard.
It features two VCOs, a noise generator, one LFO, a filter (low-pass and bandpass), and two ADSR envelope generators. VCO1 can be cross-modulated by VCO2. Each ADSR can be switched to auto-trigger, each with independent rates. The sound is quite rich and somewhat harsh and aggressive. This is more of a space-synth. You can be sure that you will have never heard the sounds this one can produce. It sounds like these old Yamaha CS-30's, but then fat filters like in Moogs. Produced in 1980x.

The supply voltage - 220-230V/50Hz. For use with 110/127V, a voltage converter is necessary. POLIVOKS has 5-DIN output connections (adapter to 1/4 jack included). No midi, no CV/Gate are installed. Dimensions - 780x490x195mm Weight of synth only - 16.00 kg

This is Very RARE RUSSIAN MONSTER!

Was Made by the Military Factory in the Kachkanar City. The sound is fantastic rich and warm – 100% pure analog machine!"

Grokking the FS1R: Part 5 - Formant Choir Dissection

YouTube Uploaded by NoisyLittleBugger on Mar 30, 2011

"WARNING - This video contains loud audio. Even though a limiter was placed on the output, the nature of FM means that noise peaks are inevitable when experimenting. You have been warned!

If you don't know what FS1R or FM synthesis are then there's no point in watching. Really.

Part 5: Formant Choir Dissection

The FS1R was primarily marketed for it's formant synthesis and Formant-sequencing (FS) abilities.

In this video I dissect a non-sequenced formant patch. Performance B008 - Choir uses formants and noise generators to mimmick the human vocal tract. Formants provide the vowel sounds, whilst the Unvoiced (noise) operators provide the consonants and/or breath.

I am collecting articles that explain the theory behind formant synthesis, with Frequency charts for common formants - see http://stimresp.wordpress.com/tag/formant/.

Essentially, the formant operators on the FS1R can be thought of as band-passed oscillators. The frequency and bandwidth of these formants can be changed to approximate the resonant qualities of real-world acoustic sounds, instruments, speech, etc.

The human voice can be approximated by at least three formants in parallel set at different frequencies. Research has produced charts that map the frequencies for common vowels and consonants - so in theory these can be used to make the FS1R say whole words. However the temporal aspects of such a patch would be too complex to program, as even 64 operators may not be enough. Changing the frequency and bandwidth is possible using MIDI knobs/automation, but the results are still far from convincing.

Yamaha's answer to this is/was formant sequencing. I will look at the formant sequences in a later video.

pellegrini space time keyboard for iPad demo

YouTube Uploaded by robotmakers on Mar 29, 2011

"Demonstration of the pellegrini space-time keyboard. A free open source iPad app based on the Control system, it allows wireless MIDI control of synths. The synths used in this demo include modular Moog."

Update: some additional info from robotmakers via Muffs:

"Inspired by the Haken Continuum, but in simplified two octave form, the pellegrini space-time keyboard is an open-source program that runs within the Control environment available free in the iTunes app store.

Control (OSC + MIDI) - One More Muse - iTunes]

The whole thing relies on your having a WiFi network and a computer with a MIDI interface. Setup is truly painless. Download the Control app to your iPad. If you have a Mac, you don't need any other software. For PC's you just have to install the free rtpMIDI driver which is very straightforward. Instructions are on the excellent Control website. Requires minimal computer skills. Really.

http://charlie-roberts.com/Control/?page_id=51

The way the keyboard works is through a combination of MIDI note and pitchbend messages. Upon initial touch, a MIDI "note on" message for the center key (from C0 to C7 depending on the octave setting) is sent, along with pitchbend info tuned to the particular key selected. Note that proper functioning relies on the receiving MIDI device (like your MIDI to CV converter) being calibrated to a pitchbend range of +/- 1 octave. When you move your finger without lifting, pitchbend information pertaining to the note "slide" is sent, along with programmable continuous controller messages proportional to the "y-axis" movement. Note that pitch information is precisely "auto-tuned" to the note in the scale being played when the user's touch moves vertically along a single key. Pitch information is also precisely "tuned" on first touch of a key. Otherwise, the player's touch freely selects continuous pitches within the two octave range. The touch end event sends a note off command. Octave up/down switches extend the playable range.

Use this link from within "Control" on your iPad to load the interface:

Sequencer relocation

YouTube Uploaded by organfairy on Mar 29, 2011

"I have had some comments saying that my DIY projects are always very organized and tidy. This video will prove that this is not always the case :-)

I have recently made a new sequencer for my first synthesizer. But the old one is still to good just to throw out. But since I am pretty displeased with the appearance of the construction I will now take it apart and rebuild it in a smaller box.

The music is made in 1998 using the old sequencer - which is now in a new box but the electronics is more or less the same. The other instruments are Rhythm Ace drum machine, Yamaha PSS-12, Yamaha VSS-30, Casio SA-1, Casio SA-3 (with BOSS OC-2 octaver pedal), Bontempi KS-3400, Kawai MS-20 toy keyboards, Roland SH-2000 synthesizer, and Dynacord Echocord Mini echo machine."
