Circuit Bent Elmo

YouTube Uploaded by FrankenMusik on Jul 10, 2011

"Yet another fun Elmo Bent Toy. Originally this toy was a Silly Parts Talking Elmo. Unfortunately I do not have any of the accessories, but he is still loads of fun to play/sample from.

There are two basic mods, pitch control and power starve. About half way into the video I switch over to added effects; space like sounds from Elmo.

" Power Starve
1/8" Output Jack
Pitch Control
Pitch Control Switch: Pitch ON/OFF/(ON)
Runs on 2 "AA" Batteries

This is a custom Circuit Bent toy that offers some great sounding glitches. Alter Elmo's voice and send him into drones by limiting the power to the CPU (brain); this is the Blue Control knob atop Elmo's head-appropriately place.

Originally this was a Silly Parts Talking Elmo and unfortunately I do not have all the accessories. Released in 2003 and discontinued in 2009. From what I gather a bit of rare toy, but not my forte. I fashioned a couple of aluminum pins that activate the switches in Elmo's body. The switches (8 of them) are located at his hands, feet head, belly and nose. If you have plans to dress him up, you are out of luck :).

Electronically, this moderately modified toy is in great working order. Battery cover is in place. Elmo has some minor scratches and scuffs."

CAUSTIC - Control Automation (knob recording)

YouTube Uploaded by CausticApp on Jul 9, 2011

"This short video shows how to record knob positions for playback, aka controller automation.

This new feature lets you add much more character to your songs by changing values over the length of the track. You can accomplish classic things like filter sweeps and volume fades. Any automation will be saved into your file and exported into output files."

"This video explains how to use the various sections of the SubSynth machine in CAUSTIC for Android.

The subsynth is probably the most complicated machine in the rack so I thought I'd give it its own tutorial. This video also shows off the cool new "Waveform Editor" that allows you to draw a waveform right on your Android device and use it as the starting point for your SubSynth preset.

Inside an Akai AX-73

"The Akai AX-73 is too big/heavy to be portable and has a very minimal control surface...perfect for a chop job. Thus was born the Akai AX-37.

It was a bit of work, with the hacksawing through the all-steel chassis and cramming the boards together, but it all works!

The walnut ends are from a fellow who does *very* nice work and is offering them for sale for the AX-family. I think they really make this project look quite classy."

Korg Delta Vintage analogue synth

via this auction

"For those that don't know this synth it is polyphonic and has 2 very seperate sections, namely the 'Synthesizer' and the 'Strings' and each section has its own dedicated set of parameter pots and switches.

1) The analogue String section is quite straightforward and has a simple AR (envelope generator) with a pot for blending the octave range of the sound from 16' to 8' with a nice fat sounding mix at 12 o'clock and completing the String section is the 2 band EQ with a simple yet effective Bass and Treble pots and a Multi/Single Trigger switch for Triggering of notes. The String section has its own dedicated output and a mixed output, very useful for live work as well as in the studio.

2) The analogue Synthesizer section is a little more complex with 4 octave range sliders for simultanious or single use from 16' to 2' plus Noise, these also have a an Octave switch to raise the pitch by one octave. The Synth section has a full ADSR (Attack, Decay, Sustain and Realease Envelope Generator which can be assigned to the Band-pass or Low-pass filter section where the Depth and Phase is controlled by the EG (Envelope Generator) Amount pot. Then there is the all inportant Resonance pot and Cut-Off Frequency slider, a must for any analogue synth and some truly weird and wonderful true analogue sounds can be realized from this simple set-up, along with all the classic fat basses and searing lead solo, plus of course the endless polyphonic capabilities for pads etc. There are 3 more switches for this Synth section for 'Keyboard Follower' to track the note frequency, the Trigger switch for Multi/Single shot triggering and finally the VCA/EG Mode switch, this is used for the amp section to either follow the envelope generator or simply on/off with no ADSR effecting the amp.

There are 2 sliders on the output for individual output level mixing of Synth and Strings and an overall Volume pot linked to the Power on/off switch. There is a joystick control for modulation of notes set by the MG Speed and Vibrato Depth pots, you can also use Noise to modulate with the Joystick, there are also 2 additional switches for the FM Depth and fcM Depth all controllable from the Joystick, all in all a great range of routing is possible for some truly amazingly effects to the basic oscillators, and of course it does the usual pitch up/dow bit too."

Novation Bass Station

via this auction

"This thing covers a lot of ground on the bass and lead front. I loved the sync sounds, not like a pro one, more like a roland. I could make some really aggressive bass sounds, the attack is plenty fast. The resonance is great, think tb 303. Very roland resonance. Still though, I could program some huge sounding moog type bass sounds out of it as well. Honestly, I wish I had gotten one of these long ago instead of all the big vintage gear I had. One rack space, and very fat and snappy. Sounds like a moog meets a sh 101 synth. Amazing. The build quality is decent, could be a bit better though..."

"Feeling creatively blocked? It is something which happens to all of us once in a while. You want to make some new sounds, but you don’t really know how to describe them nor to find them. You’re trying to play some notes on your MIDI keyboard, but you’re still finding it hard to create unique sounds.

At a moment like that, you need a tool that allows you to feel and touch sound in a very natural way. For example, shaping sounds with your hands and fingers.

Did you know, we have a standalone application, called Loopshaper, which lets you play any instrument loaded into Loopshaper using one AudioCube for note triggers, and another AudioCube for controlling 4 parameters of the synth simultaneously?"

There is a sequencer glitch section that spits out variations to your sequence, and sends out the alterations as midi info. There is a global pitch control that to be honest doesn't do much. There are 4 six position rotary switches that control the bends, with 7 segment LED's displaying what position you've selected. The panel is silk screened on black anodized aluminum."

"This one is in excellent condition and working 100%. It has just been serviced by Wes Taggart and needs nothing. There are some small imperfections here and there, but check out the photos and judge the condition for yourself. I will not say it's "mint" or "minty", but probably better than any other Minimoog (with the exception of a muSonics model I have on Ebay.) ;) It does have the buffer board for better tuning. The serial # is in the 6XXX range."

Shruthi-1 digital / analogue hybrid synthesizer

via this auction
"This is a digital/analogue hybrid monophonic synth module produced by Mutable Instruments in kit form. The filter is the SMR-4 variety (see their website). The oscillator section is digital (with onboard mini sequencer and appregiator) but the filter and VCA's are analogue. The whole thing is programmable via 4 knobs, an encoder and 6 press buttons.... it is controlled via midi. There is also an audio-in socket so that external signals can be processed by the filter and VCA's. Mutable instruments release this as a kit of parts every few months and usually offer a number of ready-made modules at a similar price to this buy-it-now for those who don't like soldering. I built this one from a kit a few weeks ago and it functioned perfectly from the first power-up. (My soldering is of a good standard by the way!)."

Buchla Donut & The "Ratchet"...

YouTube Uploaded by genxtargetmarket on Jul 10, 2011

"This was an effort to see if I could emulate the tracking modes of The Harvestman's Hertz Donut module with my Buchla 200e system. The "Ratchet" in Pendulum/Ratchet(3rd Party Pleasures)

YouTube Uploaded by genxtargetmarket on Jul 10, 2011

"I felt like exploring some of the other offerings in the world of Buchla 200. The Kilpatrick K4816 Pattern Generator is running the show. I've got the Eardrill Pendulum/Ratchet (P/R) employed as a Burst Generator. Whoo-Hoo! "Burst" and "Pattern" Generators in one go.
You'll notice that I've also leveraged the thoughtful design layout of the P/R wherein the Buchla 266e Source of Uncertainty (SOU) is merely a shorting bar away. In this case, I'm having the SOU change the density of pulses from the "Tock" output and am also having it change the speed of the P/R's clock. This varies things up quite nicely.

The Eardrill Pulse Balloons module is acting as a Pulse Train limiter and A/D Generator (yes, that's 3 function generators in total now). It is triggering the 2nd 261e dual oscillator's 292e LPG. It is also simultaneously varying the Modulation Index of the oscillator.

Special cameo appearances from the ladies in my life. Better audio is posted on the almighty Muffwiggler forum as I'm too lazy to lay the audio in here.

A good guide to making your own bongo sounds is detailed in the YouTube video by Make Noise. Just search for "QMMG Make Noise bongo" and you'll find it."
