Comparison of vintage analog Soviet synth Alice 1387 and VSTi Alice2012

YouTube ploaded by tikovbcn on Nov 1, 2011

"At beggining you can hear real analog Alice 1387 , from 35 sec - its VSTI emulation purchase at http://www.tikov.com/softrave/alice2012.htm Softrave presents Alice 2012 Vsti. This instrument is based on waveform samples from Alice 1387 vintage analog soviet synth produced in 80 `s. The idea was to recreate deep low sounds of Alice 1387 as close as possible to original. This synth is good for electro, techno, idm ambient and other electronica styles. This synth will be developed further, i have some ideas how to improve it. Upgrade to next versions will be free for all customers."

The Pianome

"It is interesting that the piano, an instrument created to popularize equal temperament, is so biased to certain keys.
The Pianome is an ongoing project in an effort to exploit alternative methods of utilizing a Monome, or any grid controller. Columns of buttons output MIDI notes chromatically upward, and in 4ths across from left to right. Very similar to the structure of a lute, or bass, offering a grid or pattern based approach to performing piano music, rather than each key being a different "finger pattern", as in key biased instruments like a piano.
For added velocity, currently mapped to shift pitch registers for added range, I turned my audio volume pedal into a MIDI controller by controlling a generated tone, who's RMS data is being analyzed, scaled and converted to MIDI in Chuck, and sent back to Ableton Live, where MIDI piano is being triggered.
Since this video, I have built a Chronome, which allows for, among other features, pressure sensitivity. This will allow for a more expressive Pianome. That coupled with double the buttons (and better piano samples) will offer a much more comprehensive fingerboard with the complete range of a piano, rendering the piano almost obsolete."

MLR in Reaktor!

"The original MLR was written in Max/Msp by Brian Crabtree, inventor of the Monome. I have rebuilt his program in another language, Reaktor for many reasons: to best understand how a program works, bottom up; because I would like to see the program have more functionality, and I am more fond/capable of/with Reaktor over Max/Msp; and because Reaktor adds certain features that Max/Msp does not allow for. For one, the ability to use any program created in Reaktor as a VST, automatically in your favorite DAW.

After I am complete advancing the program the way I would like to in Reaktor, I will code it in C as a standalone program."

QuNeo & FX

"In this video, Pressure, X, and Y CCs have been mapped to different parameters on 16 audio effects allowing for dynamic and performative audio mangling. Each Pad turns effects on and off, as well as tweaks their knobs and tickles their faders. Vertical sliders change volume, horizontal sliders mix in more audio effects, the long slider cross-fades, and the rotaries are tempo control. Very fun to play, very expressive, and very exciting."

It's a Moog anyway

YouTube Uploaded by skoulaman on Jan 6, 2012

"It's clear, it's about a solo performed with the Moog Little Phatty (upgraded tribute to version 2). Ritme is performed with other synths and a arpeggiator. Halfway (3 min) I put some more effect in the Moog solo (its a chorus/delay preset from the Lexico MPX 100 and a analog Yamaha E1005 echo). The sound becomes more intens and Iike that better.

Enjoy listening

Modular synth: Monolith2 custom cabinet

flickr By Jon Sonnenberg

Click through for the mouse overs for each module and more pics.

"I don't really know much about this synth except that the modules that I have working sound great and are mostly made up of discrete parts. I bought this off of a coworker when I was working at a music store several years ago. Originally, there was a different case, with speakers and a copper touch-plate keyboard and the word "Monolith 2". The inside was a nightmare of spaghetti wiring. I decided to tackle one thing at a time and first rebuilt the cabinet and added the multiples at the bottom. Someday, I would like to get the keyboard working."

A bit ARP 2500 inspired in design mixed with some steampunk. The top row reminds me of a specific type of graphic design, but I don't know the name.

M-Audio Venom Sound Design Tips and Tricks – Oscillators

"Tip 1 – Recreating analog oscillator behavior

The first thing that comes to mind is how the frequency of an analog oscillator drifts over time. It slowly meanders in a seemingly random fashion as the circuit reacts to small variations in temperature and other factors. To quickly add some of this behavior to a Venom sound, turn up the Drift parameter using the oscillator section of the Vyzex editor."

Tip 3 – Unusual uses for drum sounds

Buchla 200e: 266e Sample and Hold Sequence

YouTube Uploaded by djangosfire on Jan 6, 2012

"Experimenting with the 266e Source of Uncertainty's "Stored Random Voltage " lower section. A 261e is used to clock the "sequence". The 266e grabs "notes" from a 281e falling transient (that is pulsed by the 261e). SO - as the tempo/frequency of the 261e changes . . so do the "notes" created.

The 258v VCO's are the target of the sequence. Using a 255 Control Voltage Processor to attenuate the 281e transient into the 266e - allows for sequence note modifications on the fly . . . the 261e clock is passed through the 255, and is used to balance the stereo imaging.

Lot's of manual knob twiddling - more experimenting - fun stuff!!!"

GRAHAM MASSEY on Synths & the 808 State Sound

YouTube Uploaded by TerryFuckwitt on Jun 16, 2008

"808 State is an English electronic music outfit formed in 1988 in Manchester, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine and the "state of mind" shared by the members. They were formed by Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson.
This is their music video Cubik from 1990"

via A Guy Called Gerald, article via DJMag

"At some point the Roland 101, 202, 303, 808 and 909 machines became a set of kit that would all connect together happily and became affordable due to all the new midi/digital technology, making analogue a dirty word....

The sampler opened up a huge sound world to us and would be the key instrument in terms of giving a track an identity. For instance, the chords on 'Pacific State' were created by sampling a chord from a Juno 106 keyboard layered with a d50 string sound with a bit of filtering in the Casio FZ1 sampler. The bird sound on that record was an Akai sample demonstration disc of the Canadian Loon. "'Cubik' was again a multi sample stacked up with sounds from a Waldorf microwave and a Chase Bit 99 digital keyboard played by a Casio Midi guitar, which we had just got that day."

Dean Friedman of New York School of Synthesis back in the day. This is a great intro to sound synthesis. Currently Dean is an indie recording artist with a slew of international chart hits and critically acclaimed albums to his credit. You can see what he's currently up to on his website www.deanfriedman.com and his YouTube channel www.youtube.com/deanfriedman.

I want to thank Dean Friedman for giving me the permission to put these up and swissdoc for sending them.

Dean Friedman on Wikipedia - be sure to see his full bio for his musical accomplishments. The following is just a portion pertaining to his book on synthesis, the "New York School of Synthesis", and this video:

"In 1985, Friedman produced a seminal work on the newly emerging synthesizer industry called Complete Guide to Synthesizers, Sequencers, and Drum Machines. Whilst dated, this tome is still of use in evaluating devices that crop up on the second-hand market. Friedman also set up the "New York School of Synthesis" and provided a series of videos entitled Intro to Synthesis'. Friedman presents the rudiments of this topic in an audio-visual format, whilst incorporating a unique sense of humor." Note the videos must be from 1988 or later as they reference the Korg M1. Thanks goes to Caixa in the comments for catching this.

You can find Dean's website here: http://www.deanfriedman.com/

Synth Trivia: At the end of the video the credits mention the synths were provided by The Music Connection in Happinger Falls, N.Y. I did a quick search on them and nothing came up.

Note: I added a link to this post in both the Synth Books and Synth Movies sections. There's actually two copies of Complete Guide to Synthesizers, Sequencers, and Drum Machines on Amazon [link] at the time of this post.
