Radikal Technologies Quickstart Guide
"Hello Matrixsynth Lounge! I wanted to announce a new Quickstart Guide I wrote for Spectralis users. This is meant to be a supplement to the original guide. "What happens when you take an infinite amount of monkeys, over an infinite period of time, and give them a handful of CMOS chips, an old voice changer toy?
This thing is a workshop tool, which also makes lo-fi tones and grainy effects.
It was made using (from memory) at least one 4093, a 4040, a 5051, a 4017 & an old 80's voice machine.
I use it to test out circuits on my creations using the patchable bolts. It also makes a good probe, for finding useful pulses & clocks within curtain devices."

This unique feature allows you to set a full two bars start delay for your external tempo-sync hardware if you wish to give your DAW project a traditional ‘count-in’ period when tracking externally sequenced audio. Applying more complex combinations of offset values also allows for further creative external hardware syncopation by delaying the external start in rhythmically interesting ways."

Most of you should recognize Bruno Ender Lee from his videos featuring some impressive synth spotting here on MATRIXSYNTH. He has just released a new compilation album titled Space...And Beyond...Vol...2 It is currently free for 24 hours. Normally this post would go up with his next synth spotting video per the site's guidelines, but I thought I'd make the exception so you can grab it now vs. later if you are strapped for cash. Thinking of Detroit when I jammed these two out. So much amazing music has come from that city. It's also had so much hardship. When I play these live I'll sometimes add a small processed vocal; "We are with you in your fight, Detroit" Honoring its struggle to keep its democracy in the face of disaster capitalists..
Played on my usual ungainly hardware: Roland MC505--Korg ESX--Yamaha SU700--Mackie 1202. I also use an Electrix Filter."

"The Amstrad CKX100 is a quirky / odd 8-bit machine from the late 1980's. It was designed by the same team of people who were responsible for all those SID based devices, which have since become legendary.
The CKX100 does not contain a SID chip, instead it has a little ROM and a fancy DAC which does all the interesting stuff.
To the untrained eye, the Amstrad probably doesn't look too hot, but with some gentle circuit bending, it can be re-envisioned as something truly fantastical -
These particular 'Trance-Gate' Amstrads represent about 5 years of experimentation and hacking.
I am currently working on a new version of 'Strad, with different sounds & features.
There's something very lovable about these bleepy old machines..."

"Lo-Fi grainy digital drums & loads of features - the Kawai R-50 drum machine is one of my favorite devices for circuit bending.
This one has loads of new sounds and features thanks to some hardcore circuit bending on the ROM.
It also has an extra ROM, containing the the excellent R-100 soundset. There is a switch which will swap between the two ROMs.
There is also an 'LTC1799 precision oscillator' inside the machine, which can be used for live / instant pitch modulation of the drum sounds."

This Omnichord has been fitted with an array of powerful new circuitry to dramatically increase it's features & functions -
The obvious stuff is FILTER, LFO, ECHO, METAL TOUCH-POINTS.
Just out of camera shot is a Metal Bolt-Bay, which is connected to the Omnichord's RHYTHMs chip - this allows the rhythms to be re-patched in any combination to create custom rhythms.
Switches above the rhythms buttons allow the rhythms to be combined, and thus increase the potential of the Bolt-bay.
There's also knobs to tweak the drum sounds.
The really interesting stuff happens when you use the Step-Sequencer circuit - this can be used to create custom rhythms, but it can also be used to modulate the Pitch of the Omnichord, and also the Rate of the Echo... Very cool warped Echo sounds can be achieved using this mod."

"Just 7 months after JACK was released as an alternative to Audiobus, Crudebyte has had to announce the project has hit a fundamental roadblock in iOS 7.
'Apple introduced a new policy with iOS 7, which prohibits any Inter-Process Communication (IPC) among third party apps. That's the actual reason why JACK currently crashes on iOS 7, because all IPC mechanisms are now blocked for all third party apps. Obviously, without a way to communicate with other apps, we have no way to use or fix JACK for its purpose on iOS 7. Only Apple is in the position to change this situation, since this is a policy restriction enforced on operating system level. We can't do anything about it unfortunately.'"

"Duet for Synthesizers and Mobile Conductor is a piece composed and performed by John Keston in collaboration with David T Steinman who also performs in the piece as the mobile conductor. Steinman creates a real-time audiovisual score that is broadcast into the performance space from a remote location. This score consists of textural, atonal, and arrhythmic "sound features" produced with artifacts from Steinman's apartment. The imagery and amplified sound become content within the music as it is interpreted through improvisations by the synthesist, John Keston. Keston accompanies the sound features while controlling three analogue synthesizers (Novation Bass Station II, Korg Monotribe, and Korg Volca Keys). This use of an audiovisual score is a means to harness the sensory influence of non-musical sounds and images in our environments, elevating these sources to compositional structures.
Duet for Synthesizers and Mobile Conductor was performed on November 7, 2013 at the Strange Attractors festival, St. Paul, Minnesota. This video was captured during a private performance made shortly after the public showing. The piece was made possible by a grant from the American Composers Forum with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation.
