"Questions? Email support at dave smith instruments dot com.
It's a Bigger Badder Mopho!
Mopho SE is the newest addition to DSI's revered line of analog subtractive synthesizers. Building upon the same award winning voice architecture of the Mopho and Mopho Keyboard, the Mopho SE boasts huge sound in an ideally sized, portable, and elegantly designed package. Use it to create huge basses, creamy leads, and maniacal sequences.

The Mopho Sings!
The Mopho SE voice is composed of two analog oscillators, two sub octave generators, selectable 2- or 4-pole famed Curtis low-pass filter, three 5-stage envelope generators, four LFOs, a re-latchable arpeggiator, and a 16 x 4 step sequencer. Its voice also comes packed with 20 modulation sources and almost 50 destinations!

FM the filter to create metallic bell-like sounds and use the feedback path to add subtle or destructive harmonic content to your sound. Process external audio through the Mopho's voice and add some analog warmth to any source. Mopho SE's 100% analog signal path is powerful, monstrous, and sonically dynamic!"

"This is my little christmas present this year. I hope it will be accepted by apple in time. Of course it will be free, it is a gift. But enough about that.

Svärm implements a particle swarm that reacts to sound. All computations are done in real time so both live and recorded music works just as well. As input you can use the mic, line in or load songs from the iPod library. Oh, and it also supports audio bus (input, output).

This example shows one of my own tracks called RE."

Roland Jupiter-8 + TR-808 Trig Seq.

Published on Dec 10, 2013 TheSynthFreq·205 videos

"Hi everyone!
TSF here. :)

This short video is featuring the Jupiter-8 arpeg. clocked to the TR-808 trigger out. I am demonstrating the 808's precise control over the arp in JP-8 using EXT on JP, JP-8s ability to be modified while the 808s triggers are being received and then further in the video after some editing of the patch I plug the 808 AC TRIG OUT directly into my mixer channel strip so you can hear exactly what JP-8 "hears" from the 808. It is a high amplitude signal.
If you do not have an 808 but wish to trigger the JP-8 or JU-6/60 or any other synth that receives trigger in, it CAN be done. There are several other great videos demonstrating this on youtube by other users. Also,, to trigger the JP (or other synth/drum machine) you will need a high amplitude sound or short duration "spike" kind of pulse from another source. Drum sounds seem to work well for JP-8, even a drum sound sent directly into JP from the Yamaha Motif6 triggered JP's arp.
Here is some information on the 808s trigger out:

808 has 3 trigger outs. They are CB, CP, and AC all of which are located on the back of the 808 which I show the camera when I am picking up the 808. Keep in mind these trigger outs will function simultaneously along side the actual (cow bell CB), (clap CP) and the (AC accent) function/sound. If you do not want to hear the sound along side the trigger, you can simply turn down the individual volume for each, a nice feature of the 11 sounds on the 808.

A 'TRIG' or Trigger is a high magnitude voltage or transient spike, 808 provides 3 trigger outs, each trigger signal is a positive 15 volt, 20 millisecond pulse. It is very loud and will peak a mixer channel easily as it did on mine.

Some ENV/ADSR settings to approximate the short trigger of the 808 could be suggested as:

(synth: JP-8) ADSR- A= 1mS-5mS, D=1mS-10mS, S= 0-100%, R= 1mS-10s
(Also keep in mind that the Decay time and Release Time on an analogue synth like JP-8 are the same parameter just placed at different sections of the ADSR or "Shaped control voltage".
A= 0 meaning the attack time of the ENV should be 0 so that there will be a quick instantaneous response once the key or other trig/gate is started/pressed. A- controls the amount of time required for env voltage to reach its max level after a gate signal is received.
D= 0 to 2 or to the setting that works best. The decay time controls the amount of time required for the voltage to fall from its level at the end of the end of the attack time to the level set by the sustain control.
S= 0%. there needs to be no sustain for a short sound. Sustain control determines the level to which the voltage will fall at the end of the decay time.
R= 1mS- release of the gate signal. The amount of time required for the voltage to fall to its minimum level after the release of the gate signal.

Please enjoy this simple arp/808 jam.!
:) TSF"

u-he Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary of Zebra & an Update for Diva

u-he has released new Version of Zebra 2.7 for the 10 year anniversary of the software synth. The update includes a new Distortion module, Howard's anniversary soundset & AAX support for Pro Tools 10 & 11.  Pictured above and below is the original version of Zebra.

Some interesting history via u-he:

"It all began with an innocent little synthesizer for Apple's newly introduced Audio Units (AU) platform. Zebra was one of the very first instrument plug-ins available for this format, long before even the biggest companies had those in stock."

"The Performance tab with 4 XY Controls was already in there, and visual artist Cris Pearson snuck a number of bogus advertisements into it. The Synthesis view, however, looked nothing like it does today. Zebra 1.0 had a modular architecture underneath the hood, but there was no user interface to change its signal flow. This happened later, when Version 1.5 came out in 2004."

"It took more than two years until Zebra 2.0 was finally released in October 2006 - this time for both MacOS X and Windows. From then on things went quickly. Howard Scarr discovered Zebra and completely revamped the factory presets. Shortly thereafter, Hans Zimmer decided to make Zebra his go-to soft synth. He asked Howard to co-design Zebra sounds for "The Dark Knight" movie, followed by several more blockbusters over the next few years..."

As for Diva, it has been updated to version 1.3 with the following:

"The Uhbie, a filter modeled after a famous analogue multimode VCF. Our take on this morphs from lowpass to highpass via your choice of notch or bandpass.

The Digital Osc, a dual oscillator with a flexible feature set reminiscent of the synthesizer that started the hardware VA revolution in the 90ies. Not only have we covered its typical waveforms such as the original Super Saw, Feedback and TriangleMod, we even gave both oscillators the full feature set! (we also sneaked in a high quality mode with less aliasing)

An Arpeggiator! - Not to be mistaken with the recent crop of sequencers that also arpeggiate, this one pays tribute to good old analogue style arpeggiators, including some of the lesser known modes such as the "Leap" mode found in rare monophonic synths.

Further improvements include:
60 new factory presets using the new modules
AAX support for Pro Tools 10/11!
vastly accelerated GUI opening
many little niggles fixed"

Curious if the Digital Osc is based on the Roland JP-8000 supersaw. If so, it wasn't the first VA of course. That title goes to the original Nord Lead 1 and to an extent the KORG Prophecy which followed shortly after and included physical modelling. The Access Virus, Yamaha AN1x, Novation Supernova and Roland JP-8000 came in the next wave.

"The Synth Machine is a fully analogue synthesizer module developed by Michael Schweikard and Thomas Welsch (of Anyware Instruments). it is a Eurorack module made to the standards of Doepfer (meaning +/-12v power, cv and gate connections, cv pitch at 1v/oct., 3.5mm jacks on front etc.).

The Synth Machine is a 100% fully analogue synthesizer handmade in a small village in Germany named "Herborn". The module depth is only 2.8 cm. the width is 42 TE/HP (half a typical rack case). The build and component quality are very high. The 24db lowpass filter works great. It is a classic Moog-style filter. The envelope is more than fast enough to produce percussive sounds. The noise with Sample & Hold is programmed by Tom Wiltshire from Scotland. all modules pass trough a 24 hour test and check before shipping.

Synthesizer Block module: complete, fully patchable, semi-modular synthesizer voice
M3 module: audio and control voltage signal router
MIDI2 module: triple mode MIDI to CV converter
Outs module: dual independent output module
4hp logo panel
Cell[48] case
Single row hardwood side panels
450mA universal linear power supply
5 patch cables
System 1 user manual
The Cell [48] System 1 is a complete single voice, analog synthesizer and a great entry point into modular synthesis. Using the Synthesizer Block module as its centerpiece, the System 1 contains all of the most important components of a modular synthesizer. Connected internally, the Cell [48] System 1 is hardwired to create a complete monophonic synthesizer without needing to add patch cables. However, each major component within the System 1 is fully patchable and can function independent to the rest of the system by using the available patch points and included patch cables.

An unpatched Cell [48] System 1 offers direct access to a wide array of classic analog monosynth sounds. Without a single patch cable, deep bass and warm sweeping leads are just a few knob tweaks away. Plugging in a few patch cables opens the Cell [48] System 1 to experimentation by offering unlimited control over both the modulation and audio signal paths. The full functionality of the Oscillator, Filter, LFO, Envelope Generator, VCA, Midi, and Outputs can be broken apart and used like standalone synthesizer modules. All of the elements of a classic voltage controlled, modular synthesizer are available as an open, patchable, modern synth."

Sorry for the shaky footage but I'm recording the video on an iPhone in one hand while performing the techno tweaks with the other. You too can have this much fun with this little amount of gear! All Buchla 200e & clones, only delays from the Korg PME-40X and Ibanez DM 1000.

Basic take was bassdrum (swept 258 clone oscillator), hihat (noise through module module VCA), bassline (258 trough 292e) and sequence (261e) - sequenced by the Marf-clone. Second take was beginning and end drone. Then 3 takes of "acid" lines (258 through 291e) and 3 takes of spacy effects (swept 261e modulation oscilator and noise through the 291e). Cut out the best bits, but no stuff was moved. Working on sonar combining everything was boring enough !"

The Hackme Vector 3D Sensing Gesture Controller for Eurorack

Currently on Kickstarter

Details captured for the archives:

"What is Vector?

The Hackme Vector is an entirely new and unique way to interact with a modular synthesizer. Vector is a three dimensional control interface designed for Eurorack modular system. It senses the location of a hand over its face and outputs a signal proportional to position for each axis: x (left and right), y (up and down), and z (in and out). So, you can control three things at one time, like turning three knobs all at once by moving your hand through the air. The possibilities are truly infinite. You could control the amplitude of a sound with the x axis, the pitch with the y axis, and the modulation of that sound with the z axis. By moving your hand slowly over the surface, you can create subtly evolving, changing and dramatic sounds. With quick movements, you can generate bursts of dynamic audio.

To provide feedback, Vector has LEDs ringing its active sensing area. These LEDs light up according to the location of your hand. It lights red for the z axis and blue for the x and y axis. As you get closer to the surface, the red LEDs get brighter. As you move closer to a location on the x-y axis, the blue LEDs in that region get brighter and those farther away get dimmer. This makes Vector visually stunning, brilliant for live play and, excellent for dark spaces.

Vector can also recognize a number of simple gestures. It recognizes swiping gestures as well as circular motions over its surface. These gestures can be used as trigger outputs and for interacting with the built-in looping feature. Vector provides a menu system that uses gestures to change the system behavior.

Velocity Sensitive Synthesizer
Sync-Box
4x CV/Gate controller
Midi to Analog Input Filter
Fast Digital Midi Controllers
2 channel Midi Merger
Ring Modulator

TheSyntecno TeeBee is a bonafide 303 ACID emulator with some tricks up its ownsleeve! At first glance you'll notice it has many of the same controls as theoriginal TB-303 - Tuning, Cutoff, Resonance, EnvMod, Decay. It has square and sawtooth waveforms like the 303, and adds a ringmodulator and external audio input. There's no Accent but this synth has MIDIwith velocity sensitivity (there's your accent). Although it has a sequencer,it is very simple and hidden. Therefore, there is no cool 303 slide effect. However, slide effects can be controlled through MIDI, as well as every othereditable parameter using MIDI SysEx commands!

As a 303 emulator it sounds good as the real thing. The Syntecno TeeBee hasMIDI in/out, Roland Din Sync and CV / Gate in/out as well as an external audioinput making a creative tool in your studio for emulating 303's, filteringexternal audio such as drum loops or voice, and controlling older synths usingCV / Gate. Probably the best 303 emulator ever made.

• A4-channel MIDI-to-CV converter.
•Five rotary controls which can act as MIDI Controllers.

It's a classic Lo Pass Gate, but in Pittsburgh style it's also a wicked bad ass Lo Pass Filter. This thing is capable of some serious acid."

Make Noise STO as modulation source for granular synthesis

Published on Dec 10, 2013 MAKEN0ISE·28 videos

"This video shows the Sub Timbral Oscillator in low frequency, sending variable pulses from the SUB output to the Exponential FM INput on the DPO. This results in short blips of the type associated with classic granular synthesis, which are recorded and played back in real time with the Phonogene, then echoed and pitch shifted with the Echophon for dense controllable grain clouds.

Buchla 100 meets a 259 (Part III)

Published on Dec 10, 2013 DJjondent·214 videos

"This patch is a development from the previous 259 patch.

The Buchla 100's 123 sequencer is not being used as a traditional
sequencer. In this experiment it's acting like a "preset manager"
Each of the 8 steps has its own CV & gate settings. It effect they are my 8 preset sounds for the 259.

Top row of the 123 goes to mod index.
Middle row - timbre input
Bottom row to harmonics.
The 180 attack generator is modulating a 291 filter (not visible in this video.)
And the white cord that i patch into the CV in of the modulation Osc comes from the
alternate pulse out of the 140 timing pulse generator.

The sequencer used is a J3RK Flip Flop.

Using the 114 keyboard I can step through each stage to trial the different
sounds available."

Details on Open Music Labs x0x-heart $79 Mini DIY TB-303

and kicking! Published on Aug 31, 2013 openmusiclabs·16 videos

"the camera did some wierd things to the audio in places (mostly at high resonance). the yellow wires swapped saw/square."

Follow-up to "it's alive!" posted here.

"The x0x-heart is the heart of the infamous TB-303, surgically extracted to be transplanted into your designs. The x0x-heart is just the analog section of the TB-303, replicated with SMT components, and made small enough to fit into a Eurorack modular format. It even has a Eurorack power header on it.

The x0x-heart is designed to be small, inexpensive, and a close replica of the TB-303. It is not a perfect replica – some sacrifices were made to keep costs down – but it’s pretty darn close. It also has no pots or controls, making it great for DIY synth building. All of the useful I/O points are pinned out, and as a special bonus feature, digital control is given for Accent, Slide, Decay, Waveform select, Cutoff, and Env Mod. For all the nitty-gritty details, and a user manual, check out the x0x-heart wiki. Or, wander over to the x0x-heart store to pick up your very own."
