How To REALLY Play A Synthesizer

"This video is all about using all the controls of an analog synth plugin in real time in a musical way. I meant this as a way of showing how articulating the sound is key to expression. It ended up being more of a demo of my 'Claude Controller' and related gear that I built for the purpose of maximising this. The principals can, of coarse be transferred to other controllers.

As a way of promoting this approach to synth performance, I am working on making some of my controllers available as kits, Please send your comments etc and together we can get synth playing back in the lime light!

You'll Be Fine by Calvin Cardioid

Friend of the site, Calvin Cardioid, has a new single out today on iTunes and Apple Music. It features two synthesizer-drenched tunes. The title track 'You'll Be Fine' has casually thoughtful vocals over steady beats, while the instrumental 'Loud Quiet' is hazy and lazy, sitting on the couch. There is plenty of Korg Arp Odyssey and MS-20 Mini involved, as well as heavy use of the Moog Subphatty and some Roland TR-8.

"I recorded this nearly a year ago and it's taken me till now to find the will to edit the video. In the end I decided, rather than trying to cut or transition between 6 concurrent video streams, to go with a simple split screen. I actually think this approach works better, and it's a lot simpler to achieve, so future videos will probably be in this kind of format.

Looks like a four octave Roland System-1 with more controls for $1499.

Curious if it will have the CV IO of the System-1m, and whether it will be capable of more than the System-1/1m. I'm guessing at least eight voice polyphony considering the name.

We'll find out more on 909 day if not sooner.

"This has had a rebuilt power supply, new key bushings, polished key contacts, and the voice cards had fresh capacitors and tuning calibration pots installed. Auto tune passes all voices and it's tuning is stable.The power supply is rebuild more robust than stock so you can operate the synth safely and cooler over a long duration. It's voices are panned so that every other one comes out of each side for a stereo panning fun which can be changed via trimpots on the voice card boards. That being said, the OBXA is a special type of synth that needs the right owner. One who is not a stranger to vintage synths and their insides. You'll probably need to get inside every now and then for some tweaking as the seasons change or when you move the synth around so if you're afraid of the inside of vintage synths, the OBXa is just not your synth and I recommend you try the new ob6."
