Cloning Euro - uBit Gourd - a Qu-Bit Chord Audulus Module

Published on Sep 19, 2016 Bimini Road

Get Audulus for: iOS | Mac | Windows/Linux

I LOVE the Qu-Bit Chord module - if you haven't tried it out or seen a video, you should check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE3QJ... [posted here]

Although I have a hardware version, it's a fun exercise to take hardware modules and reconstruct them in Audulus. This is phase 1 of the process - using Macro Machine's infinite crossfader (included in the new update) to fade dynamically between 4 oscillators, and having the 7th chord built up at the input. Clearly based on how the inversions and voicing and harmonization works in the actual Qu-Bit module version works, I have a lot to do to rework the front end, but here it is - the beginnings of my uBit Gourd module! I'll share it with everyone when it's finished at http://www.forum.audulus.com

If you're interested in buying the actual module, buy it from the store I work for on Reverb.com - http://www.reverb.com/shop/centurysou...

If you ask me nicely at mark@audulus.com I'll share the in-progress patch with you :)

Cover - Phuture's Acid Tracks (Readers Digest mix) & 303 Distortion Party

Published on Sep 19, 2016 retrosynthads

"First attempt at covering Phuture's Acid Tracks - Reader's Digest mix. Very raw. In attendance are the TB303s, as well as the TR707/727 drum machine combo also used in the original.

Yeah - I took a few liberties.

Notes for next time: more squelch required."

"TB303 #1 going through a RAT distortion pedal. TB303 #2 going through Boss Overdrive and Delay pedals. Electribe 2 for drums. Everything going through too much reverb from a Strymon BlueSky pedal. Korg KMS-30 providing MIDI-DIN SYNC conversion. And the smallest mixer I could find at the moment. Compression during the quiet parts coming from video camera input."

Filter: RT-451Dual Multimode - what else ;-)
The groove and the bass: Spectralis 2
additional Doepfer modules: 2x A-140 Envelopes, 1 DVCA A132-3, A-190-4 MIDI-CV interface (Sync from Spectralis to A-155)

An intimate and triumphal atmosphere, such as the rise of the sun in the morning, welcomes a nymph appearing from the seawater.

The discovery of some stone heads, memories of a past time, mark the path from the sea to the dense forest.

The passage of time is beaten by continuous timelapses; the light shape the rocks, pierce the treetops and crosses the clouds, the wind ruffles the water of the lake and get the nymph's hair swayed.

In this worldview, music represents a universal language.

Rara Avis –––– computer synthesis + birdsong

"Barcelona based label ALKU presents Rara Avis, a tape + booklet about computer generated birdsong.

Rara Avis is a collective research/fun project that recreates bird calls through autonomous synthesis systems.

It features material by Chris Brown, Oswald Berthold, Anders Dahl, Joe Gilmore, Roc Jiménez de Cisneros, Fredrik Olofsson, Tim Perkis and Peter Worth, compiled on a cassette tape and a 64 page publication featuring essays and interviews with the artists. It has also been presented as a multichannel installation in 2011 (CosmoCaixa, Barcelona) and 2016 (Entzumen Behatokia, Donostia).

The tape is tweety-yellow and comes in a yellow clear case. The booklet was offset printed on 120 gsm canary-yellow PopSet paper.

Click here for an mp3 of the first minute of the tape. The tracks feature custom designed/written software synths in SuperCollider and Max/MSP, except for one, Tim Perkis (of League of Automatic Music Composers fame), who used a Yamaha TX81z.

Vintage Analog Studio Equipment

This one spotted on eBay DE by Florian. It appears to be test equipment. You can see a a filter, complex waveform synthesizer, a TIEFPASSFILTER low-pass filter OF5T, various oscillators (a couple Made in England by LEVELL ELECTRONICS LTD.), oscilloscopes and more. If anyone can ID any of the equipment, feel free to leave a comment.

original text:

"Angeboten wird diverses analoges Studio Equipment.inkl. Regal und Kabel. Den Zustand möchte ich als mindestens gut bezeichnen. Die Teile stammen aus einem analogen Studios meines Onkels. Wofür man sie genau nutzt ist mir leider nicht bekannt. Ich weiß nur das ein Teil ein seltener Sequenzer ist."

googlish:

"We offer various analog studio Equipment incl. shelf and cable. The state [of the gear] I would call at least good. The parts come from an analog studio of my uncle. Unfortunately I do not know, how to use them. I know that one device is a rare sequencer."

"The Matrix 12 is a synthesizer of legendary reputation. Created in the mid-eighties, it is still one of the most sought-after analog synthesizers. It's long been in the forefront of the market when it comes to thick, fat and round analog pads, sweeps, buzzes, basses, and textures. This thing has an incredible range of sound capabilities! It's in great condition, too! Keys are in good shape, knobs are all in-tact and all systems are functional."

Custom Bass Pedals Synth

via this auction

"Note: This is not a midi instrument,.. it is a sample-based Bass Pedals Synthesizer. If needed, your own sounds can be added to the instrument (send contact inquiry [on eBay] for details).

The computer used for this application is an IBM Thinkpad X41. It's attractive, and great for this application. As pictured you can swivel the screen around and lay it down as a flat screen (locks into place). The computer is held to the Pedal unit by 4 screws (very secure). A new internal memory battery has been installed.

The Pedal Shafts used in the construction of this unit are the very same Norlin-made shafts that were used in the original Moog Taurus series...

This is a very versatile Bass Pedals System that will open up all kinds of possibilities for the right musician. At power up, a custom automation program runs.. opening the appropriate software and putting everything into place for you so that you are ready to play in moments...

A list of the included instrument samples are as follows:

1. Taurus Bass
2. Custom Taurus Bass
3. Hammond B-3 w Leslie (single low note)
4. Rickenbacker Bass
5. Yamaha FB-01 Bass
6. ARP 2500 Bass
7. Warm Sawtooth Bass
8. Piano/String Bass
9. Mellotron Low String
10. OBX (single low note)
11. Stand Up Bass
12. Filter Sweep Bass (..as in Rush's "Tom Sawyer")
13. FM Tone (single low note)
14. Tympani / Orch
15. Dyn Bow String
16. Woodwind (single low note)

Another feature of this instrument is that samples of major and minor chords are also included. Major chords across the standard 12 note range, and if you push the momentary footswitch provided (pictured to the left of the Pedals in the pix) the chords then turn to Minor. Chord Samples include:

1. Organ
2. Strings/Horns Mix
3. Korg Layer Strings

Software features include:

1. Full ADSR control
2. Distortion
3. LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator, for vibrato effects etc)
4. Reverb
5. Delay
6. Glide (also known as Portamento,.. a rare feature for a Sampler to have)."

don buchla - 112309 & Skot Wiedman on Don Buchla's Passing

"in 2009 don buchla went to mexico city to do a lecture or visit a friend or both. anyway he ended up performing on a 200e and a recording was made. i'm pretty sure nannick bonnel is playing the piano, unfortunately i don't know who else is participating, if you do please reach out."

The above is from a post on Smile Politely, featuring Skot Wiedman of Motus Mavis and The Hyve Touch synthesizer, who had the following to say on Don Buchla's passing:

"This week has ended on a melancholic note for me. The news of the passing of one of my heroes, musician, engineer, and futurist, Don Buchla, has left me only to contemplate the vastness of his contributions to music, art, and technology. I was fortunate to meet him and couldn't thank him enough for his generous creativity and maverick spirit. His life's work is both an inspiration for me and he continues to be a giant on whose shoulders I proudly stand."

Luna and a Roland JP-08

Sending some good vibes over to Luna and Amanda of CatSynth. Feel better Luna! Hang in there Amanda!

"Today we have a special treat, as Luna poses for a CatSynth pic with the Roland JP-08 'Boutique' synthesizer. It’s 'cat-sized', but for humans it’s also a good size for an auxiliary synth and easy to carry to gigs alongside the Nord or Moog. It also brings in some Roland Jupiter sound to the repertoire.

As for Luna, she is continuing to do better since her nadir at the beginning of the month. She is eating well and active, though she does still walk with a bit of a limp. Nonetheless, we get to spend some good time together, including in the studio."

Modular Jam 59 'Sex Drive'

Borderline NSFW, so all you peeps at work, be warned! Great track though so be sure to check it out later if you can't now.

"Patch Notes:
Drums, bass and modular percussion elements were from an older session (from before I started keeping patch notes unfortunately). Drums were in Patterning processed through Flux and Filtatron and Replicant. The bass patches were all west coast patches made with 258 VCOs, Optomix and Maths. The modular percussion was also made with the same sort of arrangement (probably being modulated by PEG and Wogglebug...sorry it was a while ago)

Acid Patch 1
Standard-ish acid patch:
Seq 1 driving Rubicon sigmoid into VCF-303
303 EGs out (through Maths for mix) to uVCA

Acid Patch 2
There are two variants, Bandpass (A) and Lowpass (3 pole):
Sequencer 1 triggering Maths ch1 and Dual ADSR (Gate) and Minimod EGs (Accent)
Pitch going to Cranial Saw in sawtooth with a tiny bit of sub
Into Polaris modulated by Rubicon sine (via uVCA modulated by PEG OR) at audio rate in FM1, mix of Wogglebug Stepped Out and Maths ch1 envelope (on gate) and an accent envelope from the Minimod (AD)
Wogglebug smooth providing fall modulation to Maths ch1
Dual ADSR ch1 into Minimod VCA (Gate), Minimod EG2 into Minimod VCA (Accent)

Vocals
All made with the TransVocal Discombobulator (my own little monstrosity made from Uhe Diva, Zynaptiq Morph and Cytomic's The Drop)

Yamaha CS-5 Analog Synth Overview

Published on Sep 19, 2016 ProckGnosis

Note: He says the CS5 is 1/16th of the CS80 as 5 goes into 80 16 times. It's also one voice/mono while the CS80 is 8 voice x 2, so 1/16th again. :)

"CAUTION: this video is for serious synth geeks, who actually like watching or listening to people just screwing around with an old, analog synth for 20 minutes.

This is sort of like a review, only 30-40 years after the product was released. For being a single oscillator, mono synth, this thing really has some punch for bass, especially with the square wave undergoing some pulse width modulation from the single LFO.

As I explain in the video, this is first analog, mono synth I ever bought, and it was playing with this synth a few years ago that piqued my interest in analog mono synths again (the OLD kind that don't require menu diving, and you can't save the patches).

• Oscillators - 1 VCO with pulse or sawtooth waveforms and noise-gen
• LFO - Yes, with sine, sawtooth, sample and hold
• Filter - 1 filter: 12dB/oct High pass or Low pass; 6dB/oct band-pass
• Effects - None
• Keyboard - 37 keys
• Memory - None
• Control - CV / Gate
• Date Produced - 1978-83"

"Song recorded in Propellerhead Reason using only the Yamaha CS-5 synth and Reason's Kong Drums. Skip to 6:57 to hear the clips and sounds (without the drums or any effects). For an analog, one oscillator mono synth, this thing can kick some ass. I admit, the more I play with it, the more I like it, even with its limitations (one oscillator, one EG, etc) being at the low end of the CS family."

"Despite the look, it is not semi modular like the Arp 2600 or the Korg MS-20 but fully modular and fully patchable, like a current Eurorack system but all included very cleverly on one front panel. All built with discrete Through The Hole components, not SMT technology. Which translates to better (vintage) sound and future serviceability.

Metroid - Kraid's Lair (Analog Synth remake)

Published on Sep 18, 2016 Luminist

"I wanted to find out what the original NES Metroid soundtrack would be like if it was remade with REAL synths, 80s style.

All sounds were generated with a Korg MS20 Mini, then processed with some juicy studio effects to make things more atmospheric.

I also filmed myself playing the Kraid's Lair area of the game (y'know, because authenticity?). Died a lot of times. Sooooo many times. Excuse my terrible playing and just enjoy the music ok!

~I might do some more of these if people like it.. hint hint~

Frum FM Drum Synth for iOS Released

iTunes: Frum - TORICO Inc.

"• • • Special offer to celebrate our first app launch for a limited time!!! • • •

Unlocking new potentials of FM synthesis.

Frum is a radically new FM Drum Synthesizer, incubated after many years of research and development into FM synthesis. You may imagine FM sounds to be clear and harmonic, but those are just the start of the possibilities FM has to offer. More potential is unleashed by harnessing the unlimited, free power of complex sound waves.

Close sound encounters of the third kind.

Traditionally, FM synths are overwhelming, with too many parameters to control the sound texture. Frum bundles many of these parameters together in the BUG button, offering entirely new textures each time the button is pressed. It’s easy to find and tweak these sounds to make drums, other percussion, fat bass, organic noises such as insect songs, environmental sounds, human screams, as well as all sorts of intriguing melodies.

Features

• The sounds are at your fingertips.
With Frum, we had to rethink the existing UI design for hardware and software synthesizers, bringing the power of FM to the iOS touch screen. The vertically scrolling sequencer allows you to enjoy single-handed, stress-free control of the UI.
• Rearrange blocks to compose music.
Entire songs can be composed by rearranging pattern blocks with your fingers. Complex arrangements and organisation is possible with the user having control over song name, pattern block colors, loop counts and durations.
• Share your song on the timeline.
From incorporates SNS technology, allowing you to listen to hot new tracks from around the world, as soon as somebody shares them. Let people know what you think, and get feedback on your own tracks, via the like button, and comments section.

New MeeBlip Triode

via CDM where you'll find all the details.

In short:

"Our MeeBlip synth is back. It’s still a tiny box you can add to a synth setup. It’s still just US$139.95. But now, it packs some improved features – and bigger-than-ever bass.

The most important thing I can tell you about this is, when you flip the 'sub' switch on and enable its new third oscillator, its bass sound is simply enormous...

NEW sub oscillator
NEW red color
NEW 8 additional custom wavetables, for 28 in total
Tuned envelopes for more response
Front-panel glide
MIDI control of analog filter resonance

All of this digital grunge is combined with the same Twin-T analog filter from the anode. It’s a vintage filter design intended for things like guitar pedals, which adds aggressive resonance to your synth sound."
