Resonant Envelopes (Patch & Tweak/Learning Modular)

Published on Sep 13, 2018 Learning Modular

"Electronotes #86 had a circuit idea of combining an envelope generator with a resonant filter to create additional detail (namely, resonant bounces) in the envelope's shape. I finally got around to making a video demonstrating this technique, with two different filters (Random*Source Serge Variable Q VCF and Doepfer A-125 VCF5 Wasp Filter).

00:00 explaining the patch
01:13 using a DC coupled filter
04:35 using an AC-coupled filter
08:03 playing with inverted transients
09:58 using different filter modes
12:34 repeating the experiments with a different filter

Later I will release a movie for the Sly Grogan - a module from nonlinearcircuits based on the original Electronotes circuit.

Technical note: Yes, the keyboard camera was malfunctioning. I treated the video the best I could so you could see my key depressions. It's already been fixed for the Sly Grogan video."

"Very rare but absolutely essential part of the 100 modular system. A joy to program, absolutely required if you're going to do anything live with the System 100.

As a bonus, it can accept relatively low gate levels (5-15V), but outputs +14V gates as required by Arp 2600, Odyssey, System 100/101, System 100/102 and many other early 1970's instruments. This is a great convenience if you have a lot of old analog gear, you don't have to get it modified for low trigger levels, you can just use it with the 104.

100v, comes with (tiny) 110v->100v converter for operation in US as seen in photos."

Octave Plateau The Cat Analog Synthesizer PRE-SRM 1976

This one was listed back in 2012.

"Pre-SRM model, super clean, works and sounds great. Much richer tone than either of the later SRM models. Comparable to Mk. II Arp Odyssey (2810) except many more routing and sound shaping options. One of the most versatile monosynths ever made, a superb solo/lead instrument, an insane FX machine, an absolute joy to play.

This unit has holes drilled for CV/gate (non-standard) but interface does not work. so just consider this as a standard pre-SRM Cat that can be easily modded in the event you want to add CV/gate."

TONTO Week: Malcolm Cecil, A Tribe Called Red, and The National Music Centre in Calgary

The Story of TONTO Published on Jan 22, 2014 National Music Centre

"The Original New Timbral Orchestra (TONTO), the world's largest analog synthesizer, has found a new home at the National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta. This is the story of how TONTO went from a dream to a reality, and then found a new life and home at NMC."

Note the above video is from January 22, 2014. You should all be familiar with TONTO.

Update: It has come to my attention that John Leimseider has passed away. He was scheduled to give a TONTO Demonstration with Malcom Cecil on Nov. 17 per below. The demonstration will remain scheduled with Malcom Cecil, however the Synthesis 101 course on Nov. 14 has been canceled.

Details on the event:

TONTO Week puts "holy grail of synthesizers" in the spotlight from November 14-18

Week of activities to feature TONTO co-creator Malcolm Cecil, A Tribe Called Red, Phantom of the Paradise screening, and more

(Calgary, AB — September 13, 2018) After years of careful restoration, the National Music Centre (NMC) will commission one of the crown jewels of its music and technology collection, The Original New Timbral Orchestra (aka TONTO), during TONTO Week from November 14-18.

To commemorate this milestone, NMC will host a week of music programming timed to coincide with Alberta Electronic Music Conference (AEMCON), running concurrently at Studio Bell during TONTO Week. NMC Members receive discounted or free admission to all TONTO Week events (not including AEMCON conference passes), so purchase your membership online today at studiobell.ca/members. Individual tickets are available at nmc.ca/whats-on. AEMCON conference passes are available at albertaelectronicmusic.com.

Members of A Tribe Called Red will be the first musicians to create new music with the legendary synthesizer, and they’ll demo TONTO during a public workshop and incorporate the instrument into an evening Studio Bell After Hours set. “After seeing TONTO for the first time back in 2014, I knew that I had unfinished business at the National Music Centre,” said 2oolman of A Tribe Called Red. “I have been waiting patiently ever since to get my hands on that instrument.”

Malcolm Cecil, one of the co-creators of TONTO, will be in attendance to deliver demonstrations and lectures on the history of the instrument. NMC will also host a screening of the cult classic film, Phantom of the Paradise, in which TONTO appeared, and other activities associated with the instrument.

TONTO is one of the world’s largest analog synthesizers. Created by Malcom Cecil and Robert Margouleff in 1968, its creation marked the first attempt at making a universal language for different synthesizers to communicate with each other, which was a revolutionary achievement. Under the band name Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, Cecil and Margouleff released the highly influential album Zero Time. The album demonstrated the rich, layered sounds of the massive synthesizer and attracted significant attention.

Used on multiple Stevie Wonder and The Isley Brothers albums in the 1970s, TONTO helped shape albums by a long list of notable artists such as Minnie Riperton, Joan Baez, the Doobie Brothers, Quincy Jones, Randy Newman, Bobby Womack and more, and was prominently featured in Phantom of the Paradise.

“I needed to find a home for TONTO that would survive me and where it could be used,” said Malcolm Cecil after NMC acquired the instrument in 2013.

“We made a promise to Malcom to ensure that TONTO would be used again in the creation of new music and that its legacy would live on,” said Adam Fox, NMC’s Director of Programs. “It took several years to properly restore the instrument, and now it’s finally ready to enter its next chapter. We couldn’t be more excited to hear where NMC’s Artists in Residence take TONTO next.”

TONTO WEEK SCHEDULE

Dystopia (DiN56) by Parallel Worlds & Dave Bessell Now Available

Announced back in August, "Dystopia (DiN56) by Parallel Worlds & Dave Bessell is now available on the DiN Bandcamp store as CD / Download.

The names of both Parallel Worlds and Dave Bessell should be very familiar by now to followers of the DiN ambient electronica label. Bakis Sirros (aka Parallel Worlds) has two solo albums, Obsessive Surrealism (DiN26), Shade (DiN32) as well as collaborations with DiN label boss Ian Boddy on Exit Strategy (DiN37) and most recently World Adapter (DiN48) with Self Oscillate (Ingo Zobel). Bessell on the other hand has a single solo album Black Horses Of The Sun (DiN47) as well as his contributions to the two synth supergroup Node releases (Node 2 (DiN44) & Node Live (DiN55)). Of course the duo have already collaborated before on their 2012 album, “Morphogenic” (DiN41) and “Dystopia” sees these two musicians continue their sonic dialogue.

Track titles such as “Cipher”, “Mutagen” and “Devoid” as well as the album title leaves one in no doubt that you are entering a dark and foreboding sound world. Indeed Bessell quotes the infamous novel “Neuromancer” by William Gibson as a major influence. Bakis Sirros as ever weaves his intricate modular rhythms that seem to squirm and writhe underneath vast slabs of analogue chords that rise and fall like cities. Indeed the album is very dynamic with complex, almost classical arrangements that constantly shift under ones feet. Amongst this Bessell introduces some fleeting guitar work as well as his adventurous analogue physical modelling sound design. Seeming to inhabit a netherworld between dark electronica and progressive synth these two musicians have once again created an album that just doesn’t sound like anyone else out there. Join them for a unique sonic adventure.

All tracks composed, arranged and produced by Dave Bessell & Bakis Sirros between November 2015 and November 2017.

Bakis Sirros: ARP-2600, Doepfer A-100, Concussor, Eurorack modular (with Make Noise, Intellijel, Mutable Instruments, Waldorf, Cyndustries, Tiptop audio modules), Serge, Buchla, Blacet/Metalbox/CGS modulars, Oberheim Xpander, OB-Mx, Waldorf Microwave 1, Microwave XT, Roland System-100, Nord Modular, Yamaha FS1R, Emu EMAX II, and other sound modifiers, tape echo & software.

Dave Bessell: Macbeth M5n, Minimoog, Moog Sub37, Alesis A6, Vermona Perfourmer, MosLab System 32, Gibson Les Paul, Laney and Fender amps & Aum guitar."

German video below.

"The Mr.Q VST Plugin is available @ www.klirrfactory.com

Mr.Q is a unique VST/VST3 instrument based on bandpass filters. Mr.Q has up to 8 double (serial) resonant, tunable bandpass filters that allow you to create sounds from ambient textures over fine lead voices to absurd sub basses. It's hard to explain - so check the demo videos.

Mr.Q has 3 sequencers, a Q compressor, a up to 40 stages Wavefolder, Soft and Hard Clip and a bunch of controls for every of the 8 channels.

Be aware that this instrument can get crazy on high Q or Feedback values - but believe - it's a lot of fun!
Have fun!

Almost skipped this one as it's actually an accordion, but I thought it actually looks kind of cool as a desktop synth. It has a preset for strings as well. Curious when these were made.

This one appears to have been listed back in 2011 and 2010. Great to see the synth, box & docs have been kept in great shape.

"Moog "The Rogue" synthesizer for sale. In very good to excellent condition. Interior foam removed by previous owner. All keys, sliders, knobs and mod wheels working properly. I have only used the audio out jack so I cannot verify the condition of the others.

Cosmetic condition is pretty darn good as shown in photos. Always kept covered to avoid dust.

FYI, this is a "lowest-note priority" mono synth. Makes cool bass and lead sounds, especially using the mod wheel.

Includes original paperwork, power supply and box as shown."

Hammond 'Auto-Vari 64' voiceboard testsong ft. Ambika & Nyx

Published on Sep 13, 2018 Stereoping

"After midifying a voiceboard left over from a broken Hammond 'Auto-Vari 64' Drumcomputer i made up a song with it. Before the song starts at 1:00 you'll be presented some programmed drumloops and footage of the voicecard. Bass and Chords coming from the Ambika, the chords are sent through a Böhm Phasing Rotor 78 (don't miss the switching of the Böhm to 'SCHNELL' at 2:44 - it's this beautiful instant Solina feeling). There is also the NYX playing some dramatic solo themes, the Micromonsta bringing in blippy Arpeggios and the famous K4 contributing epic 8bit choirs, equalized by the Vermona inductor EQ and sent through the Roland DEP-5 endless reverb. Thanks for watching :-)"

Did You Know You Can Control Your Ensoniq Sampler With A Microphone?

Published on Sep 13, 2018 The Daydream Sound

"Using a microphone with your Ensoniq Sampler you can create new ways to make amazing music. In this video we’ll use a microphone to control the filter modulation on the Ensoniq ASR 10. This method utilizes the CV (Control Voltage) input available on the Ensoniq ASR 10, EPS 16+ and Classic EPS. Since this is the case, you can use this method on all of these Ensoniq samplers. Although CV has become almost synonymous with Eurorack modular synthesizers. Now you can take advantage of the Ensoniq Samplers CV input without a modular system."
