RIP John Leimseider

Update: "A memorial and celebration of life will be held at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, this Sunday, September 30 at 5:00 pm in Studio Bell’s Performance Hall (850 4 Street SE).

More info can be found here.

Pictured: John Leimseider on the right with Malcom Cecil from this recent post on the upcoming event, TONTO Week.

It has come to my attention that John Leimseider has passed away. John was the head synth technician at the National Music Centre in Calgary, Canada, and previously the Cantos Music Foundation. He was recently scheduled to give a presentation on TONTO with Malcom Cecil on Nov 17 as part of TONTO Week. Please note, that talk is still scheduled to go on with Malcom Cecil. According to NMC, "TONTO was one of the last major projects of JL’s, so this event has much more significance now that he’s gone. But there will be an enormous void without him."

John Leimseider's influence spread far beyond the museum. Many of you visiting MATRIXSYNTH likely know him. I unfortunately never had the opportunity to meet him in person, however I remember seeing him engage on both the Rhodes Chroma and Yamaha CS80 lists. I still have some of those threads. I was hoping to one day make it out to the National Music Centre and meet him in person.

Below is a short playlist featuring John including his work at the NMC, an introductory video on the Roland System-8 from Roland, a video for The Moog Legacy featuring John, and a fun video featuring Neil Diamond's band paying a visit to the NMC, invited by none other than John Leimseider. He will be sorely missed by the synth community.

Playlist:
National Music Center Mini Doc [be sure to listen in stereo - you can only hear John on the left channel to start]
First Impressions of the Roland SYSTEM-8 with John Leimseider
Virtuality: The Moog Legacy, by Amin Bhatia [John Leimseider comes in at 1:58]
Quarter Note Video Tweet: Neil Diamond's band visits the NMC collection [keep an eye out for John]

You can find a handful of posts mentioning John Leimseider in the archives here. He worked on quite a few synths sold by individuals over the years. It's neat to think each one of those synths were touched by him at some point, and the work he did on them will live on.

Roland JD-800 Synthesizer SN A013112

via this auction

"Excellant condition Roland JD-800 with a new keybed from Roland, no red glue! The key test shows 127 for all 61 keys, perfect. It has scuffs on the left end cap but that's it. No marks or scratches on the facia, rear, or right end cap of the synth (there is some minor wear on the front lower end of the right end cap). I take extremely good care of my synths & it's functionally perfect."

EDP SPIDER SEQUENCER

via this auction

"A dinky sequencer to accompany the Wasp or Gnat synthesizer and indeed with other analog synths.
This comes from a smoke free studio which has been barely used and was last serviced in Sept'18 by SRS.
Tested and in good working condition prior to listing.
There are very minor signs of wear and tear as expected for something 35+ years old.

Included in the sale:
EDP Spider Sequencer
Link cable to connect with other EDP synths
UK power supply.

The Spider is a 256-note step, or 84-note real time digital sequencer to control the Wasp and/or Gnat. It features a few simple controls for entering notes in step or real time and transposing the sequence a semi-tone, whole-tone, major-3rd, or perfect-5th as well as speed controls. Although it has EDP's own pre-MIDI interface for connecting it to other EDP gear, it also had CV/Gate outputs for connecting it to other analog synths too."

Kawai Synthesizer 100 P

via this auction

"The Kawai s100p is a rare analog monosynth built in 1979 in the wake of, and apparently based on, the famous Arp Pro-Soloist.

There is some evidence to suggest that the keyboard aftertouch found in the Kawai was licensed for use by the Arp corporation from the Pro-Soloist.

The Kawai is a very expressive synthesizer with some powerful preset sounds on board. These sounds can be modulated and affected by several touch sensitive effects such as vibrato, brilliance/wow (filter), Bend up/bend down and Growl (adds grit).

Other effects include a hold and sustain switch, portamento AND glissando, note repeat function, an analog flanger and best of all an on board spring reverb.

Yes, this is a preset synth; but with all the sound shaping functions on offer and the quality of the presets you can't fail to find mouth salivating analog goodness. The Tuba is earth shattering, the Shakuhachi beautiful and warm and when you apply the repeat, hold and flanger to the Wood Bass its instant Ultravox (think Dancing With Tears in my Eyes).

This unit is in very good cosmetic condition with just some wear along the edges of the wooden end pieces. All voices work and sound splendidly analog and raw. All keys are connecting nicely for aftertouch and apart from one missing switch cap everything is as one could wish it to be from a nearly forty year old instrument.

Grab yourself a rare vintage preset synth from 1979 in very nice condition and make me wish I hadn't sold it."

Getting to Know Planar 2 - Part 2

Published on Sep 15, 2018 Intellijel

"In this video we dive a little deeper into using Planar 2 by exploring how it can record and playback your gestures as CV. We go over how recording and playback can be synchronized with a clock and check out the three loop modes.

With its smoothly responsive precision joystick, Planar 2 facilitates hands-on vector control of two entirely independent sets of outputs (quadrants A-D, and axis X/Y), plus the ability to capture and playback your gestures. Recording your joystick movements enables the creation of organic and complex envelopes, wild and wobbly LFOs, or extended sonic evolutions. It mixes, morphs, routes and pans audio inputs; triggers gates; outputs control voltages and is itself, CV-controllable. Planar2 puts the ‘joy’ back in ‘joystick,’ and the ‘fun’ back in ‘function generator.’ Its multitasking and tactile interface makes it a flexible and unique control device, no matter what your musical genre."

New Triadex Muse Converter Proto

Published on Sep 15, 2018 otherunicorn

"Second generation of the Triadex Muse converter during development. A collaboration between Nathan Thompson and Ken Stone. [Ken Stone of Cat Girl Synth/CGS]

Basic test only: 3 VCOS, one following the octave slider, one following the standard output of the Muse and one controlled by the slide pots, each being selected by the 3 bit address generated by the note sliders on the muse. Slider tuning is slightly off - a hazard of all analog sequencers.

If only the original Muse had sounded like this...."

"More Cellular Automata-based sounds with the Organelle! We're using the CA Filter patch along with with other effects for rhythmic sound design. CA Filter is a 15-band filter controlled by a generative algorithm called Elementary Cellular Automata.

To show off this generative effect we connected our Organelle to a Boss DR-770 drum machine. In some clips we have synced the tempo between the Organelle and the drum machine via MIDI. Then we added other effects to the chain, namely the Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder, Old Blood Noise Endeavors Haunt Fuzz, Moog MF Delay, Boss DM-2, Boss OS-2, and the Yamaha FL-01. See what sounds your pedals can make with CA Filter!"
