Best Ambient Synth Shootout #55: Roland M-VS1 - Song 1

Published on Sep 19, 2018 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the Roland M-VS1. It's a 28 voice 8-part multitimbral ROMpler from the mid-90s with a focus on vintage synths.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Roland M-VS1 - Alesis Ampliton - Alesis Philtre - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a small Behringer mixer into the pc for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

"MuMidi HubLink provides a means for Musicians to connect USB-MIDI devices together. Typically, this might be a sound generator device (such as a synth) and a controller, such as a keyboard or similar. Its rugged yet stylish design makes it suitable for desktop, studio and stage use.

By also providing power over USB to bus-powered USB-MIDI Devices, MuMidi HubLink can remove the need for copious power connections in a MIDI setup."

NOISE x Cubasis 2.6: a complete expressive mobile music studio

Published on Sep 19, 2018 ROLI

"Producing expressive tracks with your iOS device is now easier than ever with a groundbreaking update to the Cubasis app and NOISE.

The latest update for Cubasis (2.6) gives you access to all the MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) capabilities of BLOCKS and the NOISE app in one extensive integration. For the first time every stage of the producing process for MPE sounds — recording, editing and mixing each instrument on a timeline based workflow — is now possible from a mobile device.

Start experiencing all the expressive sounds of NOISE within your Cubasis project. Add a NOISE instrument to your project to compose with nearly every expressive drum kit and melodic preset from your favorite ROLI and artist soundpacks.*

Enter Audio Unit (AU) full-screen mode to switch sounds, add effects and lay down your track with new Lightpad Block and Seaboard visualizers. You’ll be able to access plenty of your favorite NOISE features inside Cubasis — including Groove Kits, available in the NOISE AU for the first time ever.

If you own BLOCKS, the possibilities extend further. Pair with Cubasis 2.6 to take control of a completely portable and astonishingly expressive music studio. Connect your Seaboard Block or Lightpad Block wirelessly to Cubasis via MIDI over Bluetooth, then use the NOISE Audio Unit visualizer to record your tracks just as you would in the NOISE app.

As well as full support for BLOCKS, the latest Cubasis update also lets you use your Blocks to control the parameters of other apps that plug into Cubasis — such as the effects app Turnado or Moog’s Model 15 synth — so you can add extra expression or modulation as you perform.

Download Cubasis today from the App Store and pair with NOISE to enjoy the most advanced MPE music making experience for iOS.

*SWAM soundpacks are not supported by the NOISE Audio Unit."

Yamaha CS60 - Aftertouch to LFO Speed modification

Published on Sep 19, 2018 noddyspuncture

"The CS60 is an amazing and powerful synthesiser - but it's no CS80. As we know, the main differences between the two are that the CS60 is just a single channel instrument and also that it doesn’t have the individual [polyphonic] aftertouch which makes the CS80 so special. But there is another thing the CS80 can do which the CS60 cannot - and that's the touch response (aftertouch) control of the LFO speed. I decided to modify my CS60 so that it could and this really does take it so much closer to it’s big brother sonically. I still need to decide where to put the depth control which is why it's hanging loose while I test & demo the mod - but as you can see and hear - it makes a world of difference, taking it much closer to the CS80 and opening up possibilities never before seen on a CS60..!

So I am offering this *aftertouch* modification, which I can perform on your CS60 in roughly just over an hour - but you would need to bring the synth to me. You’d also have the added bonus of a cup of tea and also get to see my CS80 - if you’re lucky. ☺

Please contact me for full details: noddyspuncture@yahoo.co.uk"

monop - Korg Mono/Poly & Buchla 100

Published on Sep 19, 2018 zack dagoba

"Just had the Korg Monopoly fixed up - its sounding SWEET. I love the way the arpeggiator works in polyphonic mode - you can mess with the waveforms and octaves of each of the 4 notes as it goes along, which gets some unique results, sort of half way between an arpeggiator and sequencer in a weird way. The Buchla is doing the percussions, using filtered noise through the 194 bandpass filter and a mixer to change the sound in real time"

"Playing Bach's Goldberg Variations Aria with two synthesizers (Moog Grandmother and Korg Mono/Poly). This is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Posts You Don't Want to Miss

I've added thumbnail icons on the top of the site, right under the Sequential banner. Clicking on them will take you to the corresponding posts. They will feature what I consider to be the biggest news featured on the site. Remember to regularly check the New Gear and Popular Posts links on the top right of the site as well.

Update: It turns out the thumbnail icons were good in idea but not so good in practice. I've opted to bring back the Featured posts label and go with a new menu bar up top.

Here's why the thumbnails were a bad idea:

1. Once they drop off the front page they get lost. I created a "roll off" page to host the thumbnails, but over time that page would likely get too large to load. It makes more sense to just give them the FEATURED label.

2. The thumbnails were all set for the same height (100 pixels). As the width of images vary so does the overall width of the section. One too many and the last thumbnail wraps to a new line. One short and it just throws the formatting off.

3. Upkeep of the thumbnails and the "roll off" page was clearly going to be too much maintenance.

4. And finally, I am prone to error. I found a couple of the thumbnail links had typos in them or were incorrect. Not good. Going back to the FEATURED label should eliminate that problem entirely.
