Open Source Modular Additive Polyphonic Software Synthesizer

A new open source modular additive polyphonic software synthesizer by Sean Luke.

"It's called Flow, and we've been working on it at George Mason University for a year or so. Download it at github.com/eclab/flow/. It's still got some wires hanging out here and there, and could use some polishing and improvement, but it's ready to go.

Flow is a fully modular polyphonic additive synthesizer. It supports up to 16 voices, up to 256 partials, and has about 50 modules right now. It also supports macro modules: you can save patches and load them as modules to be used in later patches (including parameterizing them). It comes with an extensive manual too. And it supports MPE.

Flow is useful as a music synthesizer and as a teaching and research tool. As you might suspect this is computationally expensive: it's a standalone, not a VST, and with typically about 30 threads running it'll keep your computer nice and warm. :-) Typically uses about 2.5 cores on my Macbook.

Flow is meant to be easy to extend with new modules of your own design: and indeed the back half of the manual is dedicated to software developer walk-throughs.

The software runs on MacOS, Linux, and Windows.

Flow Version 0 is in prerelease, meaning that changes we make are likely to not be backward compatible and could well break your patches (we'll try not to). But try it out, let me know what you think. Write some patches! Design some new modules! We'd love some feedback and contribution."

"Ok, ok. The name is juvenile and it's graphics are ... controversial. But it's sound is unique. It's character is unmistakable. This is a product that genuinely lives up to, and surpasses, it's hype.

This machine is not for the feint of heart. It's unruly and unpredictable. You can simply use it as a subtle processor for the buttery cream of the filter stage and plug an expression pedal or CV source in to sweep it (or let the envelop follower do the sweeping for you). But the 'Blaster shines when you unleash the tone generating noise oscillators and let 'er rip. It never sounds the same twice which is glorious.

This particular unit also has a custom flamed maple box. The original units came housed in a plastic lunchbox. I had previously cut the lid off of said lunchbox to create more space on my table top. But being a finish carpenter by trade I eventually built a box deserving of the electronics and finished it with three coats of clear satin polyurethane. The bottom of the new box has vent holes drilled to allow for air cooling, as recommended by the manufacturer Eric Barbour. I've used this unit lightly in my non smoking home studio. It's serial #95 and I believe only 100 total were ever made. Soon it will undoubtedly achieve collector's item status."

"The Microcon is a modern-day little analog monophonic synthesizer module emulating the simple design and sound of classic Roland TB-303 andSH-101 synths. They are made by Technosaurus, a Swiss company best known for their high-end Selector modular synths. It is hand made using the same discrete circuits found in its bigger brothers.

Laid out like a 1970s monosynth, the control panel offers six sections. The VCO is, as always, the first element in the main signal path, andin use proves to be remarkably stable. Furthermore, the discrete circuitry employed should prove to be future proof, unlike synths based on Curtis chips. There are four VCO controls and likethe TB303, the Microcon offers just square and sawtooth waveforms. However, unlike its Roland forebear, it also offers a sub octavesquare wave that you can mix with the standard VCO signal in anyamount from 0 100 percent. There is also a transpose switch ( 2octaves), and LFO driven pitch modulation.

The Price
To make one controller costs about 500$. Only at a scale of 200 pieces can we lower the price to about half that. We would love to offer it even cheaper, but it is not possible without significant loss of quality. Intellijel Planar2 jam session #intellijel #planar2 #eurorack

"If you like my stuff please support me on http://music.ollilab.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/theBURG

A couple of weeks ago I finally received one of the long awaited modular for my control rack, the intellijel Planar2. This helps to almost complete the controller section that I have been planning for some time.

In this video i wanted to do a quick and simple patch, using only the planar2 as controller.. but after some noodling the MI Ears also got to play a simple part during the test.

Modulation patch notes:

- Planar X output to MI Braids Timbre IN
- Planar Y output to MI Braids Color IN
- Planar A Axis out to MI Ripples FREQ IN
- Planar B Axis out to to intellijel uVCF FM1 (freq) IN
- Planar C Axis out to MI Rings Damping IN
- Planar D Axis out to MI Rings Structure IN
- MI ears envelope out to Rings Strum IN

Sensititivy on MI Ears is half way through the video set to max so when tapping the Planar2 it triggers the strum input on MI Rings through the ENV out.

Audio patch notes:

- MI braids OUT -- Ripples LP4 -- uCVF HPF -- Quadratt mixer
- MI rings OUT ( odd ) -- Quadratt mixer
- Quadratt Mixer out -- Strymon ICE delay -- EQD transmisser
- 2 track recorder

I hope you can enjoy this little demo jam session :)

KORG Mono/Poly - First Contact (no talking)

Published on Nov 3, 2018 Tim Shoebridge

"Here is my first hands-on play with the Korg Mono/Poly. Such an amazing synth in so many ways, it has some really cool features and of course is a classic vintage 100% analogue synth.

You can listen to the track on soundcloud here: https://soundcloud.com/tim-shoebridge...

The synth arrived two weeks ago but this is my first chance to play it. Unfortunately it has some issues with the keyboard so I will be shipping it back very shortly for repair. Such a shame, hope to have it back in my studio before Christmas :("

"Instrument in very good condition given its age, electronically and cosmetically. 99% original and 100%functional. 99% original because 1: I replaced the original, worn cinch of the high output with a heavy duty, good quality jack and 2: one screw holding the score rest metal piece is not original. Slight wear on the graphics around the volume slider. No further comment needed: the pictures speak for themselves."

Easy tap and step edit modes on the sequencer and very intuitive pattern chaining for live use. Also has a copy/paste function so you can easily create variation patterns to chain together with the sequence keys. You can also send CV, gate, and accent out to other gear, eg modular of vintage synth. And it sends DinSync!"

"Analog synth & sound effects generator

Whether you're a musician, producer, sound designer or DJ - all the best of analog fatness & warmth can now be yours. At the heart of Synthex is a true Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) with Square & Triangle Waveforms - but that really is just the start.

Two audio inputs for massive Hard Sync & FM effects, dedicated control of Mix and Levels, signal path reconfiguration at the flick of a switch and a world of pure analog bliss.

Bored of lame, thin-sounding soft synths? Need a sound that is truly your own? Synthex is your synth."
