"Excellent condition holy grail synth. All voices tune and everything works except the lowest C note won't sound, undoubtedly an aged contact not electronic issue. See pics for cosmetics. Sounds glorious and with the Kenton midi retrofit this is the best version of this synth outside of the $20k+ LAMM version. Don't be fooled thinking the plus is better, it is not .. the factory midi and sequencer on those overtaxed the z80 processor affecting the envelopes. The original MM with Kenton (this) will never have those issues. Includes light duty hard case..."

Eurorack, Keystep & A Fallen Hero (Berlin-style Improvisation)

Published on Jun 16, 2019 DreamsOfWires

"Old school Sci-fi inspired jam using a Eurorack modular system including AJH Synth modules (see gear list) and 2 Arturia Keysteps. One Keystep is sending pitch to the XVCO, which is filtered by the Sonic XV, to create a continuous drone, but it is simultaneously transposing the other Keystep's sequencer (via Midi). This sequencer is is controlling the 3 AJH VCO's, which are sent to both the Ladder filter and Gemini on separate audio channels. The Gemini is being used as a stereo filter here, in Dual mode, both sides being modulated in opposition to create stereo movement. All 3 audio sources are then mixed in real time using AUM on the iPad.

I'm dedicating this to one of my childhood heroes who passed away this month - actor Paul Darrow, whose charismatic, witty, and vividly memorable portrayal of the character 'Avon' in an old UK sci-fi TV series called Blakes's 7 has stayed with me throughout my life. Ironically, I re-watched the entire series just recently. I like to think he escaped the final gun battle, and made it away on the Liberator (ship) to some distant refuge with a cargo-hold full of riches.

Gear used:
AJH Synth MiniMod system with 3 VCO's, 2 VCA's, Ring SM, Sonic XV, Ladder and Gemini filters, Dual Contour Generator, DH-ADSR (as an LFO). Frequency Central XVCO (drone) & Wave Runner (LFO).
Arturia Keystep x2.
Recorded into AUM on an iPad with EOS2 reverb. iConnectAUDIO4+ audio interface.
Eurorack cases made by me.
Filmed on a LUMIX GH4.

Next album: 'Live' single-take recordings, no overdubs, all analog instruments. Most tracks are based on past compositions, but re-recorded and re-imagined, as I've wanted to do so for a long time. Most tracks are complete, but I'm in no rush."

via this auction, also on Reverb.

"The celebrated little brother of the Prophet 5 and the first commercially available synth to feature MIDI functionality, the P600 model is an incredible value, retaining the rich tonal quality and much of the functionality of the Prophet 5.

The P600 has two oscillators per voice with sawtooth, triangle, and variable pulse waveforms. The oscillators can be individually tuned or synced together. Similar quality VCF and VCA sections from the Prophet 5 can be found here too! The P5's Poly-Mod section has also been passed onto the P600. An extremely versatile and easy to use synth, highlights of the P600 include the onboard arpeggiator, two-track sequencer and poly-modulation. The P600 is great for creating analog effects, swells and drones, and additionally boasts a glide effect and very flexible modulation possibilities.

The synth has been thoroughly tested and all functions and features work as intended. There's light wear on the solid wood ends framing the synth, and only a couple stray light nicks on the black finish. All but one of the original knobs are intact too, and the synth comes complete with its original power cable."

"The Yamaha FS1R is an 8 operator FM synthesizer with Formant filtering, manufactured from 1998 to 2000. Based on formant synthesis it also has synthesis capabilities similar to the New Montage.

The FS1R synthesizer has an impressive set of new wave forms over the earlier line of 6 OP FM synthesizers, which have since been incorporated into the new Montage line from Yamaha (with the exception of the Formant wave form). These wave forms include Sine, All1, All2, Odd1, Odd2, Res1, Res2, and Formant. The new wave forms are each constructed with a large number of inherent harmonics making FM synthesis far more efficient. Each one of these operator wave forms can replace an entire column of operators in a Yamaha DX 7 synthesizer algorithm

Akai AX-80

via this auction

"The AX-80 was their top end 8-voice analog keyboard, and it has a very similar architecture to more common 80s polys like the Juno 106, Chroma Polaris, Prophet etc, and so on. Two oscillators per voice, plus sub, all put through a classic Curtis CEM filter which gives it a bit of an Oberheim flavor -- the filter is, to my ears, most comparable to a Matrix 12 type sound (which is natural, as it uses the same Filter/VCA chip).

As to the condition, I've restored the power section and replaced the membrane buttons (which often go bad over the first 20-30 years of life) and the sound is absolutely gorgeous. Low noise floor, bright and punchy, warm and lush. The playability of this is a 9/10, or maybe a 10/10 depending on how generous you are. However, it seems that the screens were not completely salvageable so be notified that I am decreasing the price to just 650 as replacement screens are not easy to find. (If you do find some later on, feel welcome to bring it back to me and I'll install them for you).

However, the synth is perfectly well playable without the screens, and editing parameters is virtually unaffected by their absence. (The screens are really just there to look cool, in my opinion)."

Podcast 280: Leonardo Laguna Ruiz

Published on Jun 16, 2019 20Objects

"Fans of VCV Rack and Voltage Modular will be all over the name VULT, but it's also making its name known for both hardware modular gear as well as nifty DSP trickery. Created by Leonardo Laguna Ruiz, Vult produces some of the best virtual modules I've tried, and is branching out into hardware modules and even DSP programming languages. And, of course, this amazing body of work is coming from an equally amazing guy.

Leonardo is one of those pan-continental, pan-discipline people that will make you love the modern world. Leveraging a love of recording technology with an education in electrical engineering, he is one of those guys that thinks in differential equations. His passion is in modeling, and his work shows it: the filters, oscillators and other devices that he's created are fabulous examples of math-in-audio at its best.

In our chat, we talk about the modules, the language, hardware developments and Leonardo's beginning story. The whole thing is inspiring, and it'll make you want to crack those books again. Enjoy!

In the introduction of the podcast, I mention the opportunity to support Paul Birken's upcoming 'zine release. If you are interested, you can check out the first edition here, find out more on Facebook, or touch base with him at tonewrecker@gmail.com. Support the 'zine cause!"

Roland SH-3a - Playing the 'SAMPLER'

Published on Jun 16, 2019 Unun Septium

"The Roland SH-3a is an interesting little single oscillator monophonic synthesiser dating back to 1974. It was Roland's first non-preset based model and had some unusual features when compared to the typical organ-top design of the time.

The most obvious of these was the oscillator section, in which the single oscillator was divided into a range of different 'footages', somewhat akin to way a divide-down organ is voiced. These can be added or subtracted, in a choice of three different waveforms, to create a variety of timbres.

Another quite idiosyncratic feature of this synth is its Sample and Hold section. A little confusingly to the modern user, Roland labelled this 'SAMPLER'. This S&H can modulate pitch and filter settings using the more conventional random sampling, or use a choice of three different LFO shapes. Using a modulation matrix, each of these S&H LFOs can then in turn be further modulated by two seperate LFOs with three different waveforms. All told, it's quite a sophisticated feature for such an apparently modest synth.

I've been experimenting with trying to 'play' the sample and hold, i.e. get relatively musical patterns out of it. By shifting the relationship between the various LFOs and bringing the different footages of the oscillator in and out of the mix, along with the usual filter and envelope tweaking, it's surprised me how biddable it can be for live improvising.

I videoed a few of these efforts, thinking they might be interesting to others. On reflection, it wasn't the most enthralling visual spectacle, so I gratuitously rinsed the whole thing with a liberal dose of video effects, just to keep the eye busy.

The recording chain here is SH-3a to Strymon El Capistan dTape Echo to Yamaha RM602 mixer to Panasonic Lumix GH3 camera."

Roland JX3p vs alphaJuno 1

Published on Jun 16, 2019 synthlegends

"Review and comparision of basic differences and sounds. First of all I made 4 different sounds compared on both synths and in the second part I demonstrate some different strenghts of both synths. I didn't go too deep becuase it would make this video too long and maybe boring. I should give you a good and objective overview of the strenghts, advantages and disadvanteges of both synths.
My conclusion is: the alpha goes very deep with additional waveforms, great PWM, adjustable Chorus and adjustable suboscillator. Also you have great several stages envelopes with different settings.

The JX3P is less capable, but has two oscillators for warm vintage tone to detune, sync oscillator and ring modulation. It has no real PMW, but you can adjust it over the sync mode, but than you only have only one oscilator sounding.

The JX3P has the Jupiter 8/Juno 60 filter, which is IMO an poor mans JP8 and a better Juno without knobs. The alpha Juno has a bit a more gritty filter, sounds a bit harsh and less warm, but you can get really great 70ies like stuff and modern tones out of it as well.

Some great vintage tones of the JX3P you can't program on the alpha, but the other way round, the JX3P is much less capable to match alpha tones. So you need both synths :-)"
