"The Chroma Polaris was the second synthesizer made by Fender/Rhodes after they took over ARP, following their classic Rhodes Chroma. It has a classic analog ARP-like sound, kind-of tinny but also fat. Sounds can be layered up to 6 voices. It has typical analog synth controls including a cool 'sweep' knob for sweeping through the LFO or analog filter cutoff parameters. It also has a simple real-time sequencer and 132 memory patches.

There's also a nice and colorful layout with sliders similar to Roland Juno synths, membrane push-buttons and a large velocity sensitive 61-note keyboard making the Chroma Polaris a very nice synth. "The AI016 Eurorack Tape Echo Interface is a Limited Edition Module that uses a pre-amp and buffered feedback loops to allow a standard three head tape recorder as an analog tape echo. It also provides op-amp saturation on the input when pushed.

The tape recorder must have three heads (erase, record, and play) for it to work as a tape echo. This type of tape recorder will have a button or switch that allows the monitoring of the source audio, or what has just been recorded to the tape. The space between the record and play head creates the delay, and the Tape Interface feeds back into the unit to create repeats.

The AI016 provides the following tape controls:

Delay time is controlled by the tape deck. Not all tape decks allow speed control while recording, and modifications may be needed.

The WASP filter does nice bass duties as long as the resonance isn't increased too much. Adding the WAVEFOLDER after the filter, lets you mangle that filter-smoothed waveform again for some distorted dirty bass sounds. Turning up the WAVEFOLDER's Drive knob is ofter already enough."

With the addition of two Polyend Anywhere modules and two Intellijel Palette cases to my setup, I can now fit a powerful, fully-battery-powered system into my backpack and make music anywhere in nature. I almost called this first piece 'Trio for Friends, Rings, and Sparrow' because it uses three voices: Just Friends played by Monome Norns (via Crow), a micro version of Rings into Clouds, and a live field recording that features a sparrow that flew directly overhead as it sang. Listen closely and you'll notice that the sparrow also called the exact moment the piece ended. Magic. Sparrow Totem.

"Great sounding but obscure discontinued item similar to the Creamware desktop synths...it is a hardware device that runs off software editor which turns it into a great sounding hardware powered synth with MIDI in and analog audio outputs, which doesn't actually use your PC's processing power like a VST software synth....but it does use a software editor to access all the parameters and store presets...other than the ones on the front panel.

I got this many years ago and was supposed to set it up on a Win XP computer but it was around the time of switching to Windows 7 so I never got around to it. I do not have access to a XP computer now to check it out and it has been sitting unused for many years..."

Flame instruments 4 VOX Quad Polyphonic Wavetable VCO & Funkstill -Threek 13700 morphing Filter

"Today I have a small movie using 4 VOX Quad Polyphonic Wavetable VCO from Flame instruments and the newest Analog Morphing Multimode Filter Threek 13700 from Funkstill.

I specifically used to show both modules of the ambient patch because it shows the great sound of 4 VOX and you can clearly see the use of morphing with the Threek 13700 filter.

I added LFO for morphing, but also for mode and toggle changes, as you can see the diodes change, it means that the filter changes in different modes: 3 LP, 3 HP, BP, 2L-1H etc.

in 4 VOX I also set 3 different wavetables which, as you hear, change through LFO and morphing, I set two voices for a light move envelope, because the dial can be assigned to various parameters, like chords, envelope, pitch, detune, octaves, semitone and more.

The 4VOX is a quad wavetable oscillator with up to four voices per VCO channel, resulting in a maximum of 16 voices at four individual outputs. Due to a MIDI input the module can be played both with CVs or / and directly via MIDI - MIDI allows for modulating some additional parameters. There are 39 memory locations for wavetables and 32 patches for all global and VCO parameters.

The parameters of a wavetable can be controlled by CVs and by MIDI. For instance you can morph through a wavetable with a CV, a MIDI controller or manually with the potentiometer. The range of waves within a wavetable can be selected by minimum and maximum values ​​individually per voice which allows for creating more complex morphs. Further controllable parameters are Detune, Semitone, Octave, Chord, Portamento, Amplitude and Amp Move (90 degrees phase shifted volume modulation of a VCO's 4 voices). Min and max values ​​can be selected for those parameters as well. Via MIDI it's possible to control further parameters (notes, chords, pitch bend, patch selection and wavetable selection)

The Filter Threek 13700 is an analogue, 3 Pole Morphing Filter with 6 steplessly variable and voltage controllable modes. It provides self-oscillation, wave shaping (between the modes) and a lot of modulation possibilities: VC-Mode (continuously), VC-Resonance, Linear FM, two assignable CV inputs and more. It is a low distortion filter, which develops its rough character through the various modulation and feedback possibilities. Especially if you modulate the Mode at audio rates for example with a VCO or by feeding back the output signal to the Mode input (CV1, Out Mode) you can explore very unique und dynamic sounds. With the additional 1 Pole input and 2 Pole output there are 12 filter modes available.

"The Analog Delay Unit is based on the design created for the Voltage Lab synthesizer module. A finely tuned circuit designed to enhance the source material by adding depth and warmth.

Module Overview

The Analog Delay utilizes a pair of 4,096 stage BBD chips to produce a voltage controllable analog delay signal. Clean delay time can vary from 16ms to 340ms. The maximum delay time can be increased using the TIME CV INPUT delay time maxes out at 465ms but the increased time comes at the cost of fidelity and a bit of high frequency clock noise bleed. The name BBD stands for bucket brigade device in reference to a line of people passing buckets of water to quickly extinguish a fire. Each stage of a BBD chip contains a single capacitor. Pairing two chips together creates a chain of 8,192 capacitors. Like the water buckets, an audio signal is passed from capacitor to capacitor within the BBD chips once every clock step. A slower clock produces a longer delay and a faster clock produces a shorter delay.

Delay time

Delay time is set by adjusting the DELAY TIME SLIDER. Moving the slider up increases the delay time. Delay time can be voltage controlled by patching into the DELAY TIME CV INPUT JACK and adjusting the DELAY TIME CV TRIMMER. The DELAY TIME CV TRIMMER is an attenuverter. That means the incoming signal is off when the trimmer is set to the 12 o’clock position. Turning the attenuverter to the right passes the original signal through. Turning the attenuverter to the left passes an inverted version of the original signal through. Turning the DELAY TIME CV TRIMMER to the right will increase the amount of CV passed through to the delay time. Turning the DELAY TIME CV TRIMMER to the left will increase the amount of inverted CV passed through to the delay time. Locating the exact off position of an attenuverter can be difficult. The easiest wave to remove the CV signal from the signal path is to simply remove the patch cable patched into the DELAY TIME CV INPUT JACK.

Feedback

The DELAY REPEATS SLIDER sets the amount of repeats created by the delay. Moving the DELAY REPEATSSLIDER all the way down will produce 1 repeat. Adjusting the slider up increases the number of repeats until the delay begins to self-oscillate.

Output Mix

The DELAY MIX KNOB acts as a balance control between the dry incoming signal and the wet delayed signal. Turning the DELAY MIX KNOB to the left weighs the output toward the dry signal. Turning the DELAY MIX KNOB to the right weighs the output toward the wet signal. In theory, setting the DELAY MIX KNOB at 12 o’clock creates an even mix of the wet and dry signals. In reality, the tolerance of the potentiometer, waves shape, and dry signal level all influence the location of an even 50/50 mix.

"The launch of the new Expressive É Osmose was last week - the 49 key, keyboard based instrument introduces a new concept in keyboard expression, with a completely custom keybed that controls: - initial pressure (highly sensitive), secondary pressure and lateral movement (side to side).

We were very keen to see it for ourselves and had a visit from Expressive É with a prototype of Osmose - it will be changing - larger LCD, industrialized production etc. This was a mockup of the key-bed, connected to a laptop running the sound engine, the finished unit will be stand alone."
