Ensoniq Mirage: Soundprocess - the forgotten OS

Published on Jan 28, 2020 MIDERA

"Soundprocess is a synthesizer engine in the Ensoniq Mirage. Everyone knows the Mirage as that hex-based, hard to use sampler. But what most people don't realize is that an alternative OS for the Mirage was made that's even more confusing than the original ones that turns it into a 4-oscillator synthesizer! This is not for the faint of heart. I am barely scratching the surface of this 'synthesizer'.

The structure is such that you have a program. Inside that program are patches. But don't think that just because you have selected a patch you are editing the patch. You could be editing a different patch. You have to make sure you're within the right split number within the program and have selected the same patch as the one you're editing. Anyway, it's a pretty cool OS, but it is hard to navigate.

I believe this OS was created by someone named Mark Cecys. Whoever they were, they did not place an acknowledgement section in the user guide, but it is easily available so anyone is welcome to download it and review for themselves."

"The machine has been stored for the last decade with the internal batteries removed. The machine has been boxed up, clean, dry, and undisturbed throughout this time. Coming out of storage the machine no longer powers up. In the last photo there is detail of a small area of corrosion that over time has degraded some of the surface components next to where the internal batteries would have been placed."

Vintage Rare 1980’s Dr. Böhm Digital Drums M. Drum Machine Drum Computer

via this auction

This might be the first one to be featured on the site. It was spotted and sent in via M Me.

"This is the original drum machine 'Digital Drums Music' from Dr. Böhm. The machine was built in the early 80s and is in very good condition.

There are 39 instruments stored as samples in 2 ROMs. The device plays 6 voices polyphon and includes the following 20 presets: Pop I, Disco, March, Jive (R & R), Waltz, Jazz Waltz, Twist, Mambo, Samba, Bequine, Pop II, Polka (March B.), Fox Trot, Swing, Slow Waltz, Slow Rock, Shuffle Fox, Bossa Nova, Cha Cha, Tango

There are 3 variations of each rhythm (except for those in the bracket standing rhythms, since these are already a variation), a break, a solo and a fill in. So that makes a total of 60 rhythms, 60 breaks 60 fill ins and 20 solos.

An Auto Fill feature adds after the 4th, 8th or one random beat a fill in one.

The tempo is set with a "+" and a "-" button and changes back to an optimized pace when a new rhythm is selected. Do you want this avoided, you have to press the 'Hold' Button before changing the Rhythm

For adjusting the volume, there is the silver colored pot button.

The output jack is designed as a stereo jack, that means, that some instruments are on right and some are on the left. In order to connect the drum computer with a monophone amp I will deliver a stereo-mono adapter.

The sound is punchy and reminiscent of a Linn drum from the 80s.

The Böhm Digital Drums is in a good condition and works 100%. The machine is clean, but has due to age some cracks on the user panel, which were glued (see photos for reference)"

Roland JP-8080 JP-8000 JP8000 demo

Published on Jan 28, 2020 Polyvox Style

Supersaws... Roland introduced the supersaw waveform with the JP-8000.

via Wikipedia:

"The supersaw is a waveform created by Roland for their JP-8000 and JP-8080 line of analog modeling synthesizers. It emulates the sound of multiple sawtooth oscillators using a single oscillator. The waveform is described as a freerun oscillator whose shape resembles 7 sawtooth oscillators detuned against each other over a period of time.[3][4]

Since production of the JP-8000 ceased, several companies have incorporated "supersaw-like" oscillator algorithms into their hardware and software synthesizers. SUPERWAVE P8 is an example of a software synthesizer inspired by the architecture of the JP-8000, with its multiple sawtooth oscillators. Another is the Supersaw Plus, which has a JP-8000-style interface and a variation on the supersaw waveform that provides 2, 4, 6 or 10 oscillators. In 2005, Access Music released the TI-line of synthesizers, which feature an oscillator type called Hypersaw that is similar to Roland's supersaw oscillator. Roland also continues to produce other synthesizers, such as the SH-201, the SH-01, the Roland V-Synth, and the Roland V-Synth XT that have the supersaw oscillator type. The supersaw gained popularity in electronic dance music, especially with its use in hardcore and trance music."

It's both, this is the sequel to the previous Blip Box, the new After Dark version has a new visual aesthetic and more powerful sound capabilities, including MIDI control from any external keyboard etc. (This is the NAMM prototype, the product is pre-ordering now?)

[This shows a product which can be a Toy, so I have marked it 'for kids'.]"
