Roland MKS-50 or Alpha Juno? What's the difference?

Espen Kraft

"The Roland MKS-50 is the module version of the Alpha Juno 1 and 2, but are there any differences worth mentioning? Well, there's a few; The MKS-50 have PATCHES, the Alpha does not. A Patch contains a TONE (the sound itself) and a set of parameters, like volume, tune, transpose, mod depth et etc. All stored into each patch.

One of those parameters are the MONOPHONIC mode, where you can have each of the MKS-50s 6 voices respond differently to incoming midi information from say, a Midi guitar. The Alpha Juno can also be set to a simpler monophonic mode only, by setting up a Chord Memory with only the C4 as the chord. Then it becomes monophonic and it also sends out monophonic Midi information that way. The Alpha can store ONE Chord Memory, while the MKS-50 can store 16 different Chord Memories.

The electronics inside the MKS-50 and the Alphas are on paper exactly the same. Because of that they're supposed to sound exactly the same as well. For this video I loaded in my custom Roland Alpha Juno patch bank into the MKS-50 and recorded both synths at the same time. Same volume, effects, levels, tuning, mod depths etc.. In the video I just mute on/off. Btw, the Alpha Juno 2 has a memory cartridge slot, the MKS-50 does not.

Do they sound exactly the same?"

O.Z. Hall

"This video explores expanding the ARP 2600 with an addition multi-mode filter. This is similar to what one might do with an ARP 2500 with both the 24db/oct Low Pass filter as well as the 1047 Colin multi-mode filter. I hope you enjoy the video"

Warhawk [C64] music on TI-82 Calculator - HoustonTracker 2

tubesockor

This one is in via @tubesockor

"This is a TI-82 remake of the Commodore 64 soundtrack for the game Warhawk, originally composed by Rob Hubbard in 1986. It is programmed down to the deepest details on a Texas Instruments TI-82 graphing calculator using “HoustonTracker 2”.
I start with a tech dive into how sound is generated on Commodore 64 and the TI calculator (which doesn’t have a sound chip) as well as 1-bit music in general. Then the song appears, including a custom-written visualiser that I made.

VSL Eurorack analog modular synth demo JAWS theme wavefolder AWM-3, env gen D-ENV, filter VCF-74

Vintage Synthlab

"JAWS theme on Eurorack modular synth.

Here we have an AWM-3 wavefolding, while a D-ENV drives the front end (input) of the AWM-3 first stage to created dynamic wave folding (as opposed to static wavefold). Each stage has modulation injected to it's bias / threshold / offset CV input, allowing for a big, chorus-like sound.
The VCF-74 mk2 is our LP filter also being driven by independent D-ENV for both filter cutoff and VCA. The VCO-81 is our synth voice--being driven by the Beatstep Pro Sequencer #2 (yellow)."

Serge 73-75 Voice And Control

via this auction

"This is a 73-75 Serge system with 2 panels, the Voice and the Control. Both were put together from the eDIY sets that were offered at the end of the year in 2019. In addition, LEDs were added to 2 of the slews, the envelope, and the SSG modules. This makes a big difference when using, as it provides feedback. The 2 open holes in the control panel were fitted with toggle switches on the negative slews, so you can make them cycle. Both panels have been calibrated.

Both hammond boats are connected together by 4 screws inside, as well as a rubber grommet that provides a channel between the 2 for the power to be distributed. The panels were fitted with potentiometers and then wired to the boards, which took a lot longer, but this gives you flexibility if you want to do future modifications. In fact, I'd recommend someone diy friendly buy this if they'd want to add more toggle switches, LEDs, etc. The PSU is a frequency central power unit that has a +6 volt regulator, needed for this Serge design. Jameco AC adapter included to power both panels.

Cosmetically, this is listed as 'very good' since there is a little bit of rash under the mounting screws and a few small marks here and there.

Comes with a bunch of banana cables from modular addict of varying color and length."

Live hardware jam (a collaboration with a member of Elektron!)

Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by a new collaboration. Erik Angman is a Technical Writer at Elektron, but more importantly he's a musician with nuanced taste and subtlety. Erik reached out to me about the possibility of making music together, and after hearing his work, I was happy to oblige. Here, I use some audio stems from Erik as a starting point on the Octatrack, "shred to pieces" (Erik's phrase) and then reimagined. Finally, I made some additional melodic and rhythmic content via the Octatrack, Digitone, and Monomachine. I'm very happy with the results, and here's hoping it's the beginning of a beautiful collaboration!

Elektron Octatrack MkII — Sample mangler, performance mixer, scene maker
Elektron Digitone + Cooper FX & Chase Bliss Generation Loss (into Octatrack) — Warbly melody
Elektron Digitone (into Monomachine) — Swell pad
Elektron Monomachine MkII (into Octatrack) — Drums, bass, high synth, harmony synth, and performance mixer

Written by Erik Angman and Jay Hosking. Performed and recorded live by Jay, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

2020/11 - Demosong Rack69

Stereoping

"A reallife studiotest for a prototype i've recently finished, projectname Rack69. The followup video to the breadboarded version from 12/2018 [posted here]

Based on Roland's #TR-606 (plus 808 BD & CB and DR-110 claps) schemes with many mods. 5 ringing noise flavours (#Atmel) for HH & CY, one with a falling pitch envelope retriggered by the CY, demoed around 2:26. The thing is still not fully convincing, the Toms are to clicky and untamed, HH + CY are pushing each other away when played together ...

The tweaking shows much of the bandwidth, some features could not be shown though (e.g. ACC impact or triggerlevel lift in ACC section).

Other instruments used: #TX81Z, #Novation #Summit, #Matrix6 and #OSCar."
