Sequential Joins The Focusrite Group — A Message From Dave Smith

video by Sequential

"It’s with great excitement that I announce that Sequential is joining the Focusrite Group of music and audio brands.

We're now part of a family made up of some of the best and brightest companies in the music instruments and pro audio industries: Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Martin Audio, Optimal Audio, ADAM Audio, Novation and Ampify Music. We’re in good company!

But don't worry — we’re not going anywhere. It’s business as usual for us and we'll be a separate entity from the other brands in the group. I’ll continue to lead our engineering and product development and work with the Sequential design team into the future. If anything, I'll have more time to make amazing synths!

- Dave Smith"

And the official press release:

Focusrite PLC Acquires Sequential® in Landmark Industry Development

Legendary Synth Brand Founded by Dave Smith Joins Focusrite Group

San Francisco, CA and High Wycombe, UK — April 27th 2021 — In a joint statement, Focusrite Group and Sequential LLC today announced that Focusrite plc, a leading global creator of music and audio hardware and software products, has acquired Sequential LLC, the respected American synthesizer manufacturer led by legendary electronic instrument designer and Grammy® winner Dave Smith.

Both companies stand to benefit from the synergy created by the acquisition. The Focusrite Group will add the venerable Sequential line of instruments to its already-impressive portfolio of products, which includes the acclaimed Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Martin Audio, Optimal Audio, ADAM Audio, Novation, and Ampify brands. Sequential will benefit from greater resources to expand its global markets and future R&D efforts.

Sequential’s Dave Smith said, “With Focusrite, we’ve found an ideal home and a perfect cultural and technological fit. Phil Dudderidge and his team have a long history of quality, vision, and focus on what musicians and audio professionals really want. We’re excited to join such an industry powerhouse and contribute to our mutual success. I expect great things.”

Sequential has been a leading force in the resurgent popularity of analog synthesizers over the last decade. Its instruments, which include the Prophet® 5 Rev4 polyphonic synth, Pro 3® hybrid monosynth, and Prophet X Samples + Synthesis keyboard, are known for their versatility, ease of use, and excellence of sound. They are a mainstay of performing and recording artists and can be seen and heard on countless stages and recordings.

Focusrite Founder Phil Dudderidge commented: “We’re excited and pleased to add Sequential’s instruments and pedigree to Focusrite Group’s portfolio of world-class audio and music production tools. Dave Smith’s history as an innovator speaks for itself. From his creation of the world’s first fully programmable polysynth, the Prophet 5, to his co-invention of MIDI, Dave has literally changed the world of music several times. We’re looking forward to continuing his history of innovation and expanding the global market for Sequential’s instruments.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Sequential has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Focusrite plc. Sequential’s day-to-day operations and product development remain unchanged and will continue to be guided by Dave Smith and his team.

Tim Carroll, CEO of Focusrite Group, remarked, “Sequential is a premium analogue synth brand with a big stake in music creation. The products are exceptional and the company is run extremely well, and the passion of the people at Sequential aligns perfectly with our Focusrite Group ethos. It’s tremendously exciting to be able to bring Sequential into the Focusrite family, further the incredible journey that Dave Smith started, and keep growing together.”

via Sequential

And via Novation:

Legendary synth brand Sequential joins the family

Sequential and Novation will grow together under the same parent company.

We’re over the moon to announce that our parent company, Focusrite plc, has acquired Sequential, the synth brand founded and led by legendary synth designer and Grammy winner, Dave Smith.

If you’re new to the name Sequential, you’ll definitely have heard the synths: Dave Smith is the pioneer that designed the world’s first fully programmable polysynth, the classic Prophet® 5, and he co-invented MIDI, which transformed electronic production and changed musical history. Today, countless artists still count on Sequential instruments to bring life and an undeniably rich and organic feeling to their musical creations, spanning every genre.

Before your mind goes wild conceiving the ultimate Novation x Sequential product mashup, it’s safe to say that Sequential and Novation will continue to operate independently, as separate entities under the Focusrite Group umbrella. Dave Smith will remain at the helm of Sequential, leading engineering, product development and mentorship of Sequential’s new breed of designers.

So, it’s business as usual, and we’re extremely excited to grow together, inspire each other, and together fuel the future of forward-thinking music!

I'll Be There (Jackson 5) - Arp Explorer I Analog Synthesizer From 1974

video by MrCaliforniaD

"I made this video back in 2013. I then tried to upload it on YouTube, but it got rejected because of copyrights infringements.

Now that they can monetize it all they want, maybe I can share it with the world.

This song was originally recorded in 1970. This is what it could have sounded like if all the tracks were recorded on a Arp Explorer I Monophonic Analog Synthesizer from 1974.

Polyphony was achieved by adding monophonic tracks on top of each other but it was kept pretty minimalistic."

Leonard de Leonard Dawless Techno Live in Sound Provider Studio For Techno Elevation OnLine Festival

video by Sound Provider

"Dawless Techno Jam / Live from Leonard de Leonard from the Sound Provider Studio/ Berlin for "Techno Is Our Life": Techno Elevation On Line Festival.
It always fun to do Studio session like that, it's easier to choose the gear you ll use when you work on your Studio rather than choosing the one that will fit in the suitcase when we have to take the plane 😊.(even if playing in front of IRL dancers is much much better)
Lot of improvisation here , so no "real tracks" already release, if you like some parts tell me in the comment with the timing, maybe I'll try to make some songs around these parts.

Noticeable Gear I use here:
Drums and Percussions come from Native Instruments Maschine Plus, Modor DR 2 Digital Drum Machine and Eurorack modules and Patch
Synth bass and arp come from Novation Circuit Mono Station Analog Synth and most of the time from Modular Synthesizer (lot of Roland/Intellijel/Noise Engineering...)
Live Sequence from Toraiz Squid, Metropolis, Grids, Circuit , Maschine Plus Modor..."

Pics of the inside below.

"Korg VC-10 Vocoder, a vintage analog synthesizer made famous by Kraftwerk and ELO. Also used by Pink Floyd on the album Animals. It is overall in excellent, factory condition. This synth is in wonderful shape for being over 40 years old. Cosmetically it has some light wear. The signal path is clean and clear of any static or bad noises. This synth is completely factory stock original and has been looked at by a professional technician recently... from a professional music studio, Blade Studios (of Brian Blade and Brady Blade), it has been kept in a clean and climate controlled room for all of it's life. It did not and does not come with the MC-01 gooseneck microphone."

UNO Synth Pro first patch

video by boxoftextures

"Got my UNO Synth Pro today and am super happy about it. Did a quick-minute, handheld, camera mic video of a bass pulses patch that I made, first one. Patch is my own but there are still some things left over from the preset, like the arpeggio patterns, for example. I made a second patch, not in this video, after I figured out how to initialize things so was able to start from scratch on that one.

Gotta say I think this thing's a winner. Sounds great, easy to program, will fit in a backpack no problem, even came with a USB-charging battery power supply which was a nice touch. I've literally had the thing for an hour or so and totally love it already.

Reflections in Space // OP-1 Ambient Techno

video by Eon Edge

"Rediscovering my OP-1.

After listening to Rykard's Arrive The Radio Bacon on repeat for a few days, I fell in love with gritty, unswept, bitcrushed digital sounds. And what better instrument than the OP-1 for this kind of sounds?

I took my OP-1 out from its case where it has been lying for months, and rediscovered how fun it is to make music on this machine. Yes, the synth engines are quirky and lo-fi, and the tape workflow it's not the fastest for writing a full song, but it's so fun to play with! Every time I switch it on, I get lost in hours of sound design, and inevitably come up with a few interesting loops.

So here's a track born from a simple arpeggiated sequence, I don't even remember which synth engine I used for this sound, but if I could take it on a date, I would. It sounds so interesting!

I consider this track as a training exercise to get familiar again with production techniques within the OP-1 itself, programming drums, building sections, adding transitions, etc. The long-term objective is to master the instrument and write a few songs, but mostly to remind myself how fun and rewarding it is to make music.

Hope you like it!

All sounds from the OP-1, mixed and mastered in Logic Pro.

Prophet 2000 Sampler | Fantastic sound! | Demo & Tutorial

video by Espen Kraft

"The Sequential Prophet 2000 sampler from 1985. Followed a few months later by the module version Prophet 2002. 12 bit glorious sound, analog filter and amp and a very difficult mapping structure.

There does exist several software editors for this sampler so you don't HAVE to use the sampler itself to do the editing. However, I get the most satisfaction, inspiration and reward by using the sampler itself. That's why I don't care much for software editors for any synth or gear.
Both the 'Prophet 2012' software and SampleWrench lets' you import/export samples so Google them if that's your thing.

The 'null disk' I use in this tutorial is made following the Paul Wiffen Prophet 200 clinic from Keyboard Magazine Oct' 1987.
Most of the sounds in my demo track is made from sampling some of my synths, like the Juno-106, DX7, and Alpha Juno. The drums are all coming from the Korg KR-55 as I show and I chopped it all up in the 2000 and recorded each drum hit in the DAW and arranged the beat in there.
Finally I sampled the entire song and played with the filter and resonance in the 2000, in real time, while recording that into the DAW, I then found the best parts and put it into the arrangement as you hear it.
Reverb used is Valhalla VintageVerb.
The final mix is done with stems through the SSL SiX with outboard processing and mastering."

Moog Minimoog Model D SN 5984 w/ Original Manuals

video by Ken St. Onge

"Selling an original Minimoog Model D with original manuals!! Serial number 5984, which would have been made during mid -late 1974. I have not opened it up to check production dates. In good cosmetic condition for its age. All functions work to some degree, but it will need some service. See the video for features and condition."

via this auction

""This is an original MiniMoog Model D from approximately 1974. It is serial number 5948. I recently purchased this from the original owner, who bought it new and used it as a local touring musician in a 7-piece band in the 70s. It's got tons of mojo, and will make an awesome piece for a collector or a player. I am not a synth expert, but know enough to verify that most of the features are intact in working. Watch the full youtube video to see for yourself.

This is being listed in poor condition, which means that it has both cosmetic and functional issues. Those issues include, but are not limited to the following:

1. One of the keys was long ago cracked and epoxied back together. It works fine, but cosmetically isn't perfect.
2. There is patina, scratching, dings, and other imperfections throughout.
3. The tuning knob doesn't appear to tune very well
4. Many of the pots are scratchy and do not respond as you would assume in some cases
5. Volume and consistency for several keys might no be equal.
6. The filter controls spin and seem to affect the overall output, but will all need maintenance and perhaps repair.
7. The cord, or at least the plug, should be replaced because it's splitting where it meets the plug.
8. Some of the controls are finicky.
9. These are just some of the issues -- there may be others that I don't know about or haven't listed.

Given all these issues, the item is listed in poor condition, and cannot be returned. Buyer agrees that it is sold on an "as is, where is" condition with no gaurantees or warranties, either expressed or implied. Again: Absolutely no returns will be accepted under any circumstance. By purchasing, you agree to that."

Dipole v2 by Sinevibes

video by Sinevibes

"Dipole is a through-zero flanger effect developed by Sinevibes. Available as AU+VST plugin for Mac. Product page: https://www.sinevibes.com/dipole"

"Dipole is a through-zero flanger. It employs two delay lines with dual-mode feedback, and one of the delays is able to run earlier or later in time in relation to another. As this time difference passes through the zero point, a very special sound transition occurs: with positive feedback, Dipole produces that coveted spectral “swoosh” effect of a jet plane fly-by – and with negative feedback the output signal warps and eventually cancels itself out. In the old days of audio production, such effects were created manually using two parallel tape machines - but now Dipole recreates that charismatic flanging, chorusing and psychedelic stereo widening with much higher fidelity and ease of use. The plugin offers both manual control of the zero point as well as modulation via its built-in multi-waveform generator."
