Kijimi VCA RC Filter Demo

video upload by Sonic Sand Castles

"This is an A/B test of an RC filter PCB I made to filter out unwanted amp envelope artifact/aliasing noise on the Kijimi voice cards due to low-res DAC amp envelope outputs going into the VCA CV inputs, compared against the default AS3360 DIP ICs.

The PCBs I made just put an RC filter in front of the VCA CV inputs of AS3360D (SMT version) ICs.

The RC filter values are:
- 1k ohm resistor
- 0.47uF capacitor

This was just a quick reversible solution I put together, no direct soldering required on the voice cards or main board.

The first section demonstrates the unwanted aliasing using the default DIP ICs compared to the adapter PCB which filters it out.

The second section demonstrates how the adapter board reduces the strength of the envelope (which is a drawback, but I prefer that over the artifact noise)."

"Late 1960’s or early 1970’s Shin-Ei (Univox) 4 In The Floor Percussion Combo analog drum synthesizer pedal unit.

Works and is in good cosmetic condition (see photos). The four food pedals trigger kick, tom, clave and snare sounds. Rotary trim pots inside the unit (mounted off of circuit board) adjust the envelope of each sound, from very short duration to a nice decay to full-on self-oscillation. Four volume sliders (one knob is missing) control each sound’s level. A rotary “repeat’ control on the side adjusts the speed at which the snare sound repeats for ‘fills’. Runs on two 9-volt batteries or 9 volt power supplies (not included). One of the battery clips is a little flaky and may need additional attention if the unit is to be moved around a lot for gigging. A printout of the schematic is attached to the bottom plate. The screws attaching the bottom plate are not original to the unit but do the job, and one of the rubber bumpers on the bottom is also a replacement.

The sounds are classic analog drum machine, and the ability to adjust the envelopes for each of the voices allows for a lot of sound-tweaking possibilities. All four spring-loaded foot triggers work great. There’s a couple youtube videos demoing this unit that provide examples of the sounds this unit can make. I’ve noticed that if the batteries aren’t fully charged the snare sound is the first to drop down to a click, and in fact on the bottom of the unit it is printed “Replace both batteries if the snare effect become bad or the sustain of other effects become insufficient”. If you make sure to unplug the audio cable when not playing it the batteries won’t get drained (and there’s no power indicator light), but I’d recommend using a pair of plug-in 9 volt battery eliminator units as they will provide consistent power even if you leave an audio cable attached for days at a time."

Worth the Hype? The Mannequins by Whimsical Raps Mangrove Formant Oscillator

video upload by pitch patch

"This is a demo of the Mannequins by Whimsical Raps Mangrove formant oscillator. I go through all knobs and show you three patch ideas.

Mangrove is an analog formant oscillator that contains a triangle-core with a dedicated square wave output and a shaped impulse-train generator output through an internal VCA and waveshaper.

Many of the brands in the world of Eurorack modular are small businesses that produce in small numbers. To me, it is deliberating that not everything is immediately available all the time and every once in a while there are modules that are on backorder, out of stock, or out of production. With its unconventional and inspiring design, the Mangrove formant oscillator is highly regarded even years after its release. I think it is well worth the hype."

Best Small Digital Eurorack VCO? The ALM Busy Circuits MCO

video upload by pitch patch

"In this video, we are taking a closer look at the ALM Busy Circuits MCO compact digital Eurorack oscillator. I go through all knobs and waveforms and show you three patch ideas.

The MCO features 10 morphing waveforms with a resolution of 16Bit/48kHz (AKM audio codec). It has a morphing wavetable out, additional variable pulse segments out (think Alpha Juno style saw wave PWM), and a sub-square wave out. It is said to have an early 90s slightly crunchy digital type sound (like Ensoniq or Kawaii Kx synths)."

Behringer Introduces the UB-1 Spirit for $49

Another mini synth from Behringer. Curious what makes one a Spirit vs. Soul. So far they have introduced the ProVS Soul, the JP-4000 Spirit, the Saturn Soul, and now the UB-1 Spirit. I thought this one was based on the OB-Xa/upcoming UB-Xa, but per below it uses the Matrix-6/1000 CEM 3396/3397. via Wikipiea: "CEM3396 Microprocessor Controllable: Wave-Shaper x2, VCF, VCA. CEM3397 same core design as CEM3396 but with separate external signal (noise/sub/wavetable) input and VCA to mix stage and additional Pan VCA and L/R output stage. Originally labelled MS1215 and designed for Marion Systems MSR-2. Relabeled as PA397 for DSI."

I'm guessing no matrix modulation on the UB-1. It's not a mini Matrix-6/M1000. It just uses the chip.

Details:

"Introducing the UB-1, a Portable Analog Synthesizer with 2 Analog Oscillators, Classic VCF and Arpeggiator.

Uli passionately believes in empowering everyone by providing access to great sounding musical instruments, especially for kids, so they can start a lifelong love affair with electronic music and sound synthesis.

The UB-1 synthesizer is fully developed and once we receive the chips, we’ll be shipping this marvel your way. Don’t be fooled by the size - this is a monster synth in a small package. Best of all the estimated price is only US$ 49.

What’s under the tiny hood?

- Programmable synthesizer with 2 DCOs and classic 4-pole filter

- Legendary 3396/3397 analog chip design, found in the Oberheim Matrix 6/1000*

- 16 touch
-sensitive keys for great playability

- 32 memory presets, expandable via SynthTribe app

- Arpeggiator with 3 patterns and hold function

- Individual envelopes for VCF and VCA for creative sound shaping

- 2 powerful LFOs to control filter and oscillator tuning

- 6 functions buttons and OLED display for easy and immediate parameter editing

- USB Micro connector allows powering via smartphone, power bank or computer

- Comprehensive USB/MIDI implementation (including NRPN/CC control of all parameters and bulk load/save)"

2¼ Minutes of Exquisite Distraction

video upload by boxoftextures

"Well, it was 2:15 in length when I started, but then I had to let it play longer so there'd be enough to keep going under the credits. I'm putting this in the "demo" category even though it's also actual music, but it may be quite some time before it's filled out, added to, totally finished.

So basically this is one way to work on the iPad. Four synths, effects, clips being launched, mixing, etc. Well, two synths I guess as the bass and the piano are pretty much set. And using presets kind of goes against the grain for me but the Other Desert Cities rhythm/echoes thing was just so juicy when I was flipping through the list looking for mine that I had to keep it. And then I used it again LOL. It just makes the thing come alive somehow.

So this tune shows how it all comes together on the iPad, at least for me. Everything in AUM (AUM as a platform?), with launchable MIDI clips in Atom Piano Roll 2. The first clip is just "on" by default, meaning it automatically starts up when the AUM play button is tapped. The others come in when manually launched. It may appear that they're not immediately starting when the button is pressed, mainly because that's true. The clips start on the beat, so if you're careful things can easily be kept in sync. And I'm not going to mention a take or two where I was not as careful as I needed to be and things were on beat two or three instead of on beat one. There's settings to deal with that if you care to, but I don't usually.

Bass courtesy of iFretless Bass, the closest to a Chapman Stick you can get without getting a Chapman Stick. As I've said before, always wanted one and may someday actually do it. There's a black 10-string Railboard (with aluminum dot inlays and a MIDI pickup) with my name on it somewhere off in the possibly distant future. But I digress. Weird but entrancing "clapping" rhythm provided by adding Other Desert Cities onto the bass. Flipping through the presets and I literally did a "whoa" when I stopped on that one. Piano chords from Ravenscroft; it just feels like a piano to me when I play it. Extra added space courtesy of Eos 2, kind of my go to. Then some ridiculously thick and moving textures from Flowtones. Only had it a little while but it's already one of my favorite synths, enough so that I'm probably going to get the Mac version too. And then I decided I needed a little bit more of some punchy rhythm so I went for Laplace and cranked up some resonator action. And then I sent that through the same Other Desert Cities preset and on into Shimmer for added texture. As one does. And then we'll see what happens after that once it's given some time to develop.

NYC Composer Michael Whalen on the Minimoog Model D Signed by Herb Deutsch

video upload by moogfoundation

"'... It's a piece of art ... a piece of history.' - Michael Whalen

Recording artist, synthesist, composer, and producer Michael Whalen on why the Minimoog is so iconic, and why this one, in particular, is priceless.

Enter to win this stunning vintage Minimoog Model D in a custom walnut cabinet, signed by synthesizer pioneer Herb Deutsch https://bit.ly/DeutschMinimoogRaffle

The Minimoog featured is serial number 11,535, built at Moog Music’s Cheektowaga, NY factory during the late 1970s. It has an estimated value of $10,000. Due to the highly-coveted nature of this archetypal synthesizer, and the iconic signature from Herb Deutsch, it is likely to increase in value. This Minimoog has been meticulously restored by revered synthesizer technician Wes Taggart of Analogics, who also crafted its new custom walnut cabinet enclosure. It is in excellent technical and physical condition.

The raffle begins on February 9th, to commemorate Deutsch’s 90th birthday, and serves as an homage to his seminal contributions to the Moog legacy. It ends on March 7, 2022, at 11:59pm ET, or when all 4,500 tickets sell out, whichever comes first. Tickets are $20 each, six for $100, 14 for $200, or 40 for $500

Funds raised from the raffle will be used to expand the Foundation’s hallmark educational project, Dr. Bob’s SoundSchool, which has inspired over 20,000 elementary school students through the science of sound. The raffle will also help support the Moogseum, an immersive, experiential facility located in Asheville, NC, which brings Bob Moog’s pioneering legacy and the science of sound and synthesis alive for people of all ages. The Moogseum, which opened in late May of 2019, has welcomed over 14,000 visitors from all over the world, despite significant challenges due to the pandemic.

Our last raffle sold out so be sure to purchase your tickets early."
