Patch Diary 003: Korg MS2000

video upload by Bloom Music

"Let's make this patch.

This is a new video series where I create a patch from scratch and explain it (with subtitles) along the way.

The synth for today was the Korg MS2000.

The effects used were:
TC Electronics 3rd Dimension
Mattoverse Electronics Inflection Point
Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo

This time, I made a plucky, but mellow pad sound."

Yamaha AN1X Demo No Talking - Unusual but very cool presets

video upload by js-sound

"For the good old AN1X synthesizer, I am ready to say a lot of thanks to the creators of that time, even if it is not perfect in everything.
For all the modern developments of Yamaha over the past 15 years, I would not say a single thank you and would drive all the creators (sorry not a creators! I am must be more precisely, fu...ing marketers) with a broom from the yard. The Yamaha Montage advertised by the "stars" should not have appeared at all in the form in which we received it."

Live annotated eurorack Tangerine Dream inspired cinematic synthwave, ARP-2600, Moog, OB-6

video upload by EthanJamesMusic

"This is a live cinematic synthwave electronic music performance inspired by later Tangerine Dream music, where I wanted to setup a more meditative environment and create a slow musical progression by interweaving layers with the Eurorack, providing bass from the Moog Grandmother, chords from the DSI OB-6, and melody from the ARP-2600. This is an entirely live and unrehearsed improvised performance, and I included annotations to show some of what I'm thinking about and also to demonstrate the different musical themes weaving in and out of the texture Since I'm a film composer by trade, this came out relatively cinematic and would work in certain movie score settings. This is a very simple setup to make a big sound. I hope this is educational for you as well, in terms of how I put these performances together. Hopefully this camera angle also helps you learn something!"

Why Do We Still Care About the Juno?

video upload by Alex Ball

"In 1982 the Roland Corporation released a budget polyphonic synthesizer. On paper you'd expect it to have been forgotten about within a couple of years, but the opposite is true.

In this video we explore why that happened and look at the modern successor, the Juno-X.

Thank you to Roland for sponsoring this video.

Tom Oberheim Joins Bob Moog Foundation's Captains of Industry on His Birthday Today

via The Bob Moog Foundation

On his birthday, we welcome Tom Oberheim to a special group of supporters

Pinch us, we're dreaming! Visionary inventor, innovator, and iconic synth designer Tom Oberheim, founder of three electronics companies including Oberheim Electronics, Inc. and the man behind the new OB-X8 analog synth, has joined our Captains of Industry program.

Backers like Tom don't just celebrate birthdays and create world-class synths, sequencers, and drum machines. They help us grow scientific and technical literacy today, while preserving the electronic instruments of the past.

Our Captains of Industry program lets supporters like Tom and others empower our efforts on a larger scale, with a three-year pledge of $5000 USD or more annually.

Our supporters help us shape a better future.

With Tom Oberheim on our side, we can do even more to increase scientific literacy and grow technological understanding, introducing young people by the tens of thousands to what inspired Tom, Bob, and all our work: the science of sound, and how the engineering principles that inspired both Tom and Bob can be an experiential part of learning to think and act critically.

L-R, a few greats: Dave Smith, Bob Moog, Ikutaro Kakehashi, and Tom Oberheim

There are still more seats at the table for those who want to join the three-year mission that is our Captains of Industry program.

'We are deeply honored to have Tom Oberheim join fellow synthesizer and music technology luminaries Ernst Nathorst-Böös, Marcus Ryle, 8Dio, Gerhard Behles, Chris Halaby, Daniel Haver, iZotope, Christoph Kemper, Ray Kurzweil, Spectrasonics, Larry Thomas, Universal Audio, John Worthington, and Hans Zimmer/Remote Control Productions in supporting the important work of the Bob Moog Foundation through our Captains of Industry campaign. Their support inspires us, bolsters our projects, and sustains our work during an unpredictable time.'
- Michelle Moog-Koussa, Bob Moog Foundation Executive Director
Welcome to the Captains of Industry, Tom. We're glad to have you, and we can't wait to put your support to work. Happy birthday!"

MIDI Patterns: Acid/303-Style Sequences for DAW & VST synths

video upload by Anton Anru

"This MIDI-Pack was requested by many customers who liked my Behringer TD-3 patterns. And now the same patterns are available in a universal/standard MIDI format.
Import a pattern into your DAW and put in on a midi-track with any VST synth. The patterns include Accents via Velocity and Legato notes for Glides. For proper work, use monophonic timbres with Envelopes and Glide in Legato mode.
🗂 Get the patterns: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/vst/ (Available as individual soundsets and as a bundle)

The sequences are organized in the following way. Each pattern inside the group has 2 variations: A and B. A has fewer notes and articulations, it's good to start with it, while B is much more energetic and expressive variant of A. This organization gives an opportunity to develop your bass line from "soft" to "expressive" (or vice versa) just in one click. And, of course, you may do any changes in sequences while performing or jamming.

The sequences are suitable for many genres: Acid, Rave, Techno, House, Trance, Downtempo, Lounge, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore, Industrial, Dub, Electro and others.

⛔️ Important! The patterns are in .mid format. It's not supported by 303-Synths by Roland, Behringer and others. Hardware synths use their own native format. You may find the same patterns for Behringer TD-3 on my website: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/behrin...
Please be attentive before the purchase. Choose the right format: MIDI or Native-Synth."

Oberheim OB-8 with DSX Sequencer w/ Docs

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"I have been obsessive about gathering complete documentation for my OB8, keeping it in top condition, and leveraging all of its flexibility and features. There is no reproduction synth that gets at the sound and character of the real thing. So, in support of this instrument, the OB8 comes with a hard case (the case is attributed to Loren Jones of “Sweet Tommy” fame…), six (6) CEM 3340 VCO chips (that’s three voices worth), one (1) DSX Sequencer with ElectronGate memory expansion, one (1) DSX for parts (keep in mind that the panel switches have some interchangeability with the OB8), two (2) OB8 to DSX connector cables, operator manuals, service literature, and other helpful guidance documents. It is up to date with B5 software. This OB8 has a j-wire keybed, which is a lot easier to maintain, and Oberheim MIDI implementation.

Aesthetically, the OB8 is in outstanding condition and has the Page 2 silk screened on the panel. There are surface scratches on the main panel and pitch/mod panel. The wood endbells have a few more holes in it; this from a previous owner. The high D key was repaired. See pictures.

The DSX is really cool. The learning curve is high, but the payoff is quite rewarding. You can sequence the OB8 directly, but the DSX has 8 CV/Gate outputs to simultaneously drive and sequence a bunch of monosynths. Yes, it’s very constrained interfacing, as the DSX is the master sequencer for the OB8, but with the appearance of software like DSXHack (), the gap is narrowed between MIDI and Oberheim Music Performance system. This is hardcore flexibility. There is a certain aesthetic that comes out of using this technology to its fullest, and definitely pushed my music to give it an authentically-1980s flair."

SOS arcane

video upload by studio snippets

Spherical Sound Society ARCANE (first posted here), and Oxi Instruments One seqeuncer.

Some pics and additional info on ARCANE:

via Tindie

"ARCANE is a generative synth that lies somewhere between a synth, a sequencer and a drum machine, depending on how you interact with it.

It is based on an authentic Yamaha YM2413 FM chip; the one used in some arcade coin ops, MSX and in the japanese version of the Sega Master System.

To control it it has 6 potentiometers and 3 buttons. The pots are:

-TEMPO. It controls the tempo/speed

-BASE REGISTER. It determines if the machine is more musical or glichy. Better left it around 3 o'clock position for more musical results. Turning it to the center and left side produces more noisy/glitchy and chaotic outputs. You have been prevented!

-INTENSITY. The higher this pot, the more amount of notes and percusions sounding. This is a very playable way of alter the generative composition by transitioning between the simple and complex sound patterns

-SEQUENCE. It let you browse between sequences. Turn it to select random patterns

-DISPERSION. the higher this pot, the most registers that we are writing on the chip, so the sequences get more complex and chaotic. This and intensity are a very playable pair and both are related. Once you tuned something that you like, try to do variations playing this pot and INTENSITY one

-COMBINATION. It multiplex, demultiplex and recombines sequences, keeping the output related but always fresh and different. At minimun it produces a 16 step sequence. At maximun it produces a 8 steps sequence. Between is where the magic happens, and it recombines and produce generative patterns via bitshifting and logic operations of the sequences.

It has 3 buttons, Left, Right and Reset. Reset is located in the arduino and is self explanatory. If you have been playing in the BASE REG pot center/left side and it has turned too chaotic or noisy, just put BASE REG pot around 3 o'clock and press reset. It will come back to more musical landscapes.

Left and Right buttons are to be determined as the firmware is still in development.

It has Clock In and Clock Out so you can synch it with external gear. To accept external clock set TEMPO pot at minimun.

It comes fully assembled and ready to play or as as full kit or basic kit for you to build it"
