Vaemi Introduces XFMR Ring Modulator Eurorack Module

video uploads by Vaemi

"Vaemi's new module XFMR Ring Modulator, designed for Eurorack systems, has introduced an active ring modulator design with transformer.

Vaemi (Volt Age Electronic Musical Instruments), which manufactures synthesizers and electronic musical instruments commercially in Turkey, released its first module Osi-Op (through zero fm VCO) in the past months and immediately afterwards they shared Eurorack modules such as Shift Register, R2r Ladder, Buffered Multiple. Now, after the XFMR VCA, Vaemi, which continues the second of its transformer module designs, comes up with the XFMR Ring Modulator, that is, an active ring modulator design with transformer.

The original scheme and the history of this design date back to Harold Bode. It was designed passively at that time. XFMR Ring Modulator is a more advantageous active ring modulator module. A very large area on the panel of the module is illuminated with blue LEDs and shows the phase and height of the output signal. The input of the module is AC coupled because it is a transformer. There are also 4 knobs for controlling the module. With these knobs, you can determine the input and output levels, the number of CVs and shift the offset of the CV signal. The XFMR Ring Modulator has a very rich sound, very soft and open at high frequencies. The module has 10Vpp input and output. Tamura brand quality audio transformers are used. Vaemi today's electronic music and popular synthesis techniques can be applied to additive, FM, Formant, Subtractive, such as synthesis equipped with a system that can be used comfortably in today's music and a modern range of systems that they aim to bring together with their users will continue to be shaped and developed with new module designs that will come this year. You can browse Vaemi's products and get more detailed information by visiting www.vaemi.net You can also follow Vaemi on their social media accounts and take a look at the promotional videos, features and sounds of their new modules.

PPG wave 2.2 vs 2.3 are there any differences?

video upload by synthlegends

"I used to have a PPG wave 2.3 and I also got a 2.2 later on. Then I had to decide, which to keep and I compered them to each other. I prefered the 2.2. In this video you can hear some dfferences. The 2.3 sounds in many patches weaker and the panorama settings of the voices behaves sometimes strange. I suppose that the unit has some slightly issues, althought it got a full service and overhaul. The 2.2 didn't get any service at all. Also the envelopes seem to behave slowlier on the 2.3. When regariding the specs, the transient sounds in the PPG Wave 2.3 played with 12 bit or with non-linearly scaled 8 bit. The 2.2 played with 8 bit. Both PPGs used the same DA converters. Both used the same filter SSM 2044. In both PPG i had the latest OS 8.3 developed by Hermann Seibt. So I wonder why there are sound differences. My thesis is, that the 2.2 should not sound different from the 2.3. In this video it does. Now I only have the 2.2 in my studio, I sold both, the 2.3 and also the EVU, which you can see in this video."

Arturia MiniFreak Demo (No talking)

video upload by Hunart©

"Hy Everyone!

I've finally had a chance to spend some time with the "new" MiniFreak. Honestly, I really like that one. As usual, no external effects, just a limiter and a bit off low cut (It can get ugly sometimes XD) on the whole material. Everything was recorded track by track to Ableton. All sounds are from the MiniFreak.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Enjoy,
Hunart"

Playlist with additional MIDI Kit demos

Brief Overview with the CS40M

Details via LalalandSynth

CS Series MIDI Kit

"Lalalandsynth have just releases their Yamaha CS Series midi kit, this kit will work for the following Yamaha CS synths, CS5, CS10,CS15,CS30, CS30L, CS15D, CS20M and CS40m.

The kit is simple to install and will give the user MIDI IN/OUT , Dual 12 bit filter control, note priority, envelope trigger and Seq trigger for the CS30.

You can make all your settings on the keyboard or use the WIN/Mac app that comes free with the kit.

Lalalandsynth have also made a Win/Mac plugin that will allow the user to draw in their own patterns to control each filter, this plugin comes loaded with features that make it simple and fun to make patterns and riffs using the filters on the CS synths."

Filter Modulator Plugin

"The CS Modulator plugin is made to work in conjunction with the CS series MIDI Kit (see midi kit here) and will work for all synths in that collection. Essentially it gives you two tempo synced LFO/envelopes for the CS series of synths. Draw in your own LFO/Envelope shapes for each filter (where applicable) or switch over to the stepper and draw in your own steps (up to 64 steps)."

OKTAVISION - Pray to the holy ghost

video upload by Okta Vision

New from supporting member Okta Vision.

"It's almost purely MS20 ,paired with sequences generated by maths and Tip Top Z8000 sequencer , there's also a little arturia Fairlight sequence after the first bridge."

"The first track from the forthcoming new OKTAVISION LP is framed with excerpts of Chris Marker's Documentary Sans Soleil . https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084628/

Lyrics:

Were serving the rich and were praying to the holy ghost
We struggle for life and we strive to produce the most.
We’re saving the flame beacuse we are to blame and we’re saying the least cause we fear of getting lost.

The vision of power is a game of a sheer belief
To conquer the lives of others lost in the mist
No shame , no remorse , divide what you need most and leave it for later in order to save you cost.

Missing what we need while we fight and consuming, never like before. grow a higher breed , it can save your misfortune if you ask for more.

We shouldn't have gotten the need for expensive thoughts, desire and hunger are not for the needy most
We’re shouting on impulse we’re screaming for need we’re taught just one lesson, this way we’ll be always lost.

The spirit of our angst derives from their nasty thoughts. Demanding and pressing for power in their tied knots. They're calling police but we have nothing to miss , a small opportunity here for a future loss."

Groove Synthesis 3rd WAVE vs PPG Wave 2.2

video upload by synthlegends

"Short Demo of 7 factory and custom PPG sounds reprogrammed on the Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave together with my friend Till Kopper. Till is the frist owener in Germany with a 3rd Wave and he lives only 20 km from my home. So we meet regulary to play synths. We tried out how the 3rd WAVE is capable to adopt the classic sound of the PPG wave. I have a 2.2 in my studio and it was quiet interesting, hard at the same time to recreate some classic PPG sounds on the 3rd wave. Our impression is, that they can sound very close. The PPG wave has some mistakes in the sound which made it legendary, so over the whole keyboard the sounds are different with aliasing in higher octaves an brizzelng in deep registrations. It is very hard to get this effect on the 3rd wave, but we think that the guys from Groove Synthessi did a great job to get the 3rd wave as a succeedor of the old PPG. The demo is without any FX or mastering. The sounds you can download free for the 3rd wave here: https://till-kopper.de/3rd_wave/3rd_W..."

Waldorf Blofeld Coming of Age

video upload by Starsky Carr

"It's been around since 2007 so how does it stack up in 2023? Surprisingly The Waldorf Blofeld is coming into its own... only take 16 years:) I'm desperately resisting the urge to put Bond references about Blofeld return etc... mainly because I can't think of any good ones!

Its the perfect accompaniment for a DAWless setup - get yer pads out... 16 tracks and 25 voices simultaneously and all sounds bang on. Nice and neat - so powerful with a miniature table friendly footprint."

'FAT BASS' - Bigger Sound for Synth Bass Lines using the Wave Swarm & Ring SM Eurorack modules

video upload by AJH Synth Official

"Some fat synth bass line sounds using a variation of 2 VCO, Ladder Filter, Wave Swarm for a thick sawtooth pad, and Ring SM for sub basses. Either or both of these 2 modules add a lot of scope to the sound of even a single VCO, even more so with two. Patch notes at the bottom.
The Wave Swarm uses it's 12 waveform animators to create thick, buzzing supersaw style sounds, from either a single saw wave, or from two independent saws, even as part of two completely separate monophonic synth voices, even a two-voice polyphonic patch. Check the links below for User Guide and some patches.
The Ring SM has both a vintage-voiced, fully analogue ring modulator, modelled on the ring mod from the EMS Synthi and VCS3, but it is also a 5-channel Moog CP3 style mixer, capable of soft clipping overdrive/distortion, and most importantly for bass patches - a sub bass/sub-octave generator, needing only a single VCO to generate both -1 and -2 sub octaves simultaneously. All functions can be used together, or on their own. The sub basses are shaped sine waves, which sound thicker and deeper than plain square waves, which are most commonly used by synths as sub basses.

The AJH SYNTH Eurorack range consists of high-end modules, all hand-made in the UK, most of which are based on classic, vintage designs, authentically recreating the circuitry of much sought-after analogue instruments and technologies of the past, whilst greatly expanding them, and bringing them to modern Eurorack levels of convenience, limitless flexibility, and reliability.

Check out the AJH Synth playlists for module 'User Guides', and 'Patch of The Week' videos, which will be either performances or 'how to' guides, detailing functions/methods, and a range of sounds, some familiar, some less so, containing a patch sheet at the end to show you how to construct it for yourself.

Meet us and the modules in person this year at Superbooth 23, Berlin, on May 11th to 13th.

You can find a demo of one here.

"This is an early breath controller/filter module originally made for the Crumar Stratus. It can be connected to almost any vintage analog synthesizer. It has two trigger outs, three transducer voltages out, touch modular pad, bite and breath attenuators, and sensitivity adjustments. It can make almost any analog synth breath controllable.

This filter module was originally sold from 1978 - 1980. This particular module shows signs of mild rust and paint blemishes. The breath tubes are yellowed and old. It has not been tested, however, since this is an old analog synthesizer module, the components can be easily replaced if necessary. Possibly only the capacitors would need to be replaced.

The last photo of the serial number plate still has the remnants of the plastic cover on it."

What a Synthesizer Designer learned from a Neuroscientist?

video upload by Meng Qi

"I made a calculator based on the concept of Critical Bandwidth. It returns the percentage of tonal pitch intervals given base pitch and ranges of numerator and denominator. It's to aid the decision-making for the ranges of controls on a musical instrument. As musicality lies in a range, experimentation lies on its edges, and controllability is better when the range is smaller. We do want a healthy balance of all three elements.

ENSONIQ ESQ-1 - Synth Demo | Sounds, Patches & Presets

video upload by synth4ever

"Ensoniq ESQ-1 synth demo featuring sounds, patches and presets. The ESQ-1 is a vintage digital / analog hybrid synth released by Ensoniq in 1985. This Ensoniq ESQ-1 synthesizer demo showcases various sounds including pads, basses, fx, bells, strings, drums and more.

Released in 1985, the Ensoniq ESQ-1 has 61 velocity-sensitive keys, 8 voices of polyphony, 9-part multi-timbrality, 24,000 note & 8-track sequencer, 3 oscillators, 3 LFOs, 4 envelope generators, low-pass resonant filter, MIDI and storage for 40 internal patches (expandable via cartridge).

The ESQ-1's 3x oscillators are digital and use a custom Ensoniq chip to generate 32 different waveforms. The low-pass filter uses a CEM 3379 chip however does not fully self-oscillate and is only 32-steps of resolution. The VCA is also fully analog. In addition, the Ensoniq ESQ-1 can respond to polyphonic aftertouch via MIDI.

The Ensoniq ESQ-1 also features amplitude modulation, oscillator sync, monohponic mode and portamento. Programming is done via the buttons and data slider on the front panel, however changes do not take effect until the subsequent key press. Sequences of up to 999 bars can be chained to songs for massive performances.

The Ensoniq ESQ-1 has a classic digital / analog hybrid sound from the mid 80s and is a workhorse synth that continues to be loved and appreciated to this day. It is very fully featured and despite the lack of knobs and sliders, is fairly quick to edit. If you are interested in early hybrid synth sounds from the 1980s, the Ensoniq ESQ-1 is a great choice."
