ADDAC System Introduces Michel Waiswisz's Cracklebox ADDAC708 Eurorack Module

Pics and details below via ADDAC System

[The video of an original Cracklebox box on ADDACs site was previously posted here back in 2009. You can find additional posts including demos of other designs of the Crackle Box here.]

Introducing a limited edition re-release of this iconic electronic instrument in a modular format.

This limited edition of 75 units is a tribute to the pioneering work of Dutch musician and instrument maker Michel Waiswisz (1949 - 2008), who first invented the Cracklebox with Geert Hamelberg in the late 1960s.

The Cracklebox was a small, handheld device designed as a way to explore new sonic territories. It was one of the first electronic musical instruments to use circuit bending techniques in the creation of electronic music. It allowed musicians to manipulate and control electronic circuits in real-time, creating a wide range of unique and experimental sounds. He used a circuit from a toy piano as the basis for the instrument, and then added a series of touch-sensitive pads that were connected to the circuit. When a player touched one of the pads, the circuit would be completed, producing a crackling sound.

The Cracklebox was probably the first commercialy available portable selfpowered alternative 'keyboard' analog electronic instrument with inbuilt loudspeaker.
In the 1970s about 4000 Crackleboxes were built and sold by STEIM in Amsterdam.

Nowadays many people refer to the The Cracklebox as the archetype of 'glitch' or 'circuit bending'.

In the decades since its invention, the Cracklebox has continued to be an important and influential instrument in the world of electronic music. It is still in use today, and is considered a classic example of the potential of electronic music to create unique and innovative sounds.

This Eurorack recreation includes a 9v battery, swappable through the frontpanel, this allows to isolate the current flowing through the user's fingers from the Eurorack frame PSU, protecting the user from undesired electrical shocks. We also removed the internal speaker and used a transformer instead to isolate the output signal.

The output generated can be used as an audio, as a gate or a cv signal, when using it as a cv source, due to the specific qualities of the signal, users may want to send it through other modules as slews, sample and holds, quantizers to tame/control it's peculiar cv output.

Controls:
- The module features an on/off switch to turn off the 9v battery (remember to turn it off when you turn off your Eurorack system).
- A Power Starve knob, reduces the 9v voltage feeding the circuitry changing it's overall timbre/pitch
- An Output Gain knob to control the output volume.
- A Boost switch to add more presence to the signal.

Tech Specs:
12HP
5.5 cm deep
20mA +12V
20mA -12V

Ace Tone Rhythm Ace FR8-L with pin matrix

video upload by batchas

"I use the proto of a pin matrix I did for another machine, so the panel is not adapted, but I wanted to test the principle. 30 different rhythms/clocks (vertical lines) and 10 instruments (horizontal lines) to choose from. All combinations possible. I'm happy with the result :)
The additional boards we see at the left side (red board for external trigs + midi board) have nothing to do with the matrix itself. These are different mods that I installed.
Next I'll make the hardware for all the mods that I added."

sequential OB-6 patch 244 Chords - tweaked and surrounded

video upload by Franz Schimmel

"summer funk ! in this i took the patch 244/744 from the obie, and play an arrangement with an Arp on the Microfreak, a drum pattern on the Model:Samples and something live in addition on the Yamaha reface CP. Freak and the Yamaha went through my specular tempus, Obie and M:S came out of the box. All mixed in one take on the old Behringer analog Mixer MX802A.

Something that i like on the sequential is the fact that you can switch it into permanent sustain mode while running a sequence or Arp, when the sustain pedal is pressed. I soldered a footswitch thus i can switch it on if needed.

have a nice day-!"

Blue Thunder: The Sounds I Made For The Film

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"In this video I breakdown the FM Synclavier sounds/sequences I made for the 1981 movie Blue Thunder, Staring Roy Scheider & Malcolm McDowell.
https://archive.org/details/Hollywood...

Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work 'In the Family Way', written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.

His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

video upload by Electrum Modular

"Exploring the wonderful world of hocketing, using Disting EX's 'Chord Engine'.
Recorded "live", adding only EQ + compression in Logic Pro.

Patch is described in the video. Just one clarification: as the sequencer spits out a new note every 2 bars, and the voices take it in turns to be the recipient of that new note, each voice changes note every 8 bars. As there are 7 notes in the sequence, this piece effectively repeats itself every 56 bars.

The piece excerpted in the first few seconds is “In saeculum breve,” a motet by an anonymous French composer, from the 13th-century manuscript, the Bamberg Codex. To avoid incurring the wrath of the copyright gods, I made my own version, inputting midi into Logic Pro and using brass instrument instead of voices, and adding convolution reverb with an impulse file recorded in a large church.

7/18/23 Roland 104 (for sale) sequences UH-lectronics telephone synth + Fairfield Circuitry + D-TWO

"Fairfield Circuitry’s Unpleasant Surprise pedal eats a telephone-cum-synthesizer created by UH-lectronics, which is being sequenced by a Roland 104 sequencer from the legendary System 100. Some T.C. Electronics D-TWO too. The 104 sequencer was refurbished in 2020 by the very meticulous Tone Tweakers in NYC, which is reflected in the price at Christopher’s Boutique 489 on Reverb where it is for sale." Link below.

"Ergonomics are not just for the elderly! If all that Eurorack wiggling and tweaking is giving you arthritis, get yourself a vintage sequencer with big knobs made for a human hand, but fitted with with the ubiquitous 3.5mm output and input jacks.

This 104 sequencer was created as part of Roland’s classic System 100, but it is very useful with other synthesizers. I have used it on Roland’s SH 101, but mostly on Roland’s System 100m. The 104 and the 100m get along very well.

The 104 produces CV and gate, has an internal clock, and can be externally stepped. Two CV channels. Series outputs and parallel outputs. 2.5v, 5v, 10v selectable per channel. CV in on the clock! End pulse output. Plus the Step button—handy for getting your sequence to the right step before starting up the master clock, or for punching in 1/8th notes when you overdub on a song you recorded to tape, but the tape stretched and you can’t clock the sequence you wanna drop so you go manual and tap that step button.

This 104 has been fully serviced by Tone Tweakers. They call it “future-proofing” but their servicing really means it works and is dependable because they fix anything wrong with it and preemptively replace parts known to fail."

Roland TR-808 Vs. TR-8S | How does it sound with samples?

video upload by Espen Kraft

"The Roland TR-8S drum machine can import samples. So I sampled the classic TR-808 and used these in the TR-8S, to hear how close it came. I've been wanting to sequence samples TR-style for a while and the TR-8S seemed to be the natural choice.

Vintage ARP / Eminent Solina String Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Solina String Synthesizer is the rare brother of the String Ensemble. Only about 100 were made, so they are very hard to find. The String Synthesizer is basically a combination of the String Ensemble and the Arp Explorer 1. You can select between Preset sounds (trumpets, flutes, and clarinets) or make your own using the added VCO, courtesy of the Explorer. It offered way more sound editing than the String Ensemble, and was capable of more diverse sounds. The unit is technically flawless, it was serviced about 2 years ago. There is also little to complain about visually."

4ms Looping Delay - Karplus-Strong Synthesis

video upload by 4ms Company

"How to create a Karplus-Strong synthesis (aka Waveguide synthesis) patch using the Looping Delay. The Sampler is used as a sound source to create bowed metal, plucked string, and exotic alien lead sounds.

The Looping Delay is a clock-based delay for creative synthesis. Not a tape or analog emulation, but a modern crystal-clear digital delay, the Looping Delay combines features of delay, looping, and sample-tight synchronization for powerful and dynamic sound capture and modification. Based on the Dual Looping Delay, the Looping Delay offers the same high-quality sound in a smaller, single-channel format. Available now as a pre-built module, or as a DIY Kit."
