DB-01 Doom metal pedal test

video upload by Richard DeHove

"In guitarland many people have remarked how closely the Joyo Double Thruster pedal replicates the sound of the Darkglass B33K. Given that the B3K is one of my favorite pedals I bought an ugly Double Thruster to find out how it goes on synth. Originally I thought I'd do a straight comparison with waveform and frequency response blah blah but in the end it really came down to two things:

1) For me the B3K only has one 'sound' and you just dial in more or less of it. Excessive knob twiddling just degrades the effect
2) The Joyo captures about 95% of the B3K sound and has identical controls even down to the bass and mid-boost options and the feel of the footswitch

So forensic analysis seemed a bit pointless. Instead I did what many who lament mono-only pedals do: Run two identical pedals left and right to achieve a type of stereo. That worked pretty well imo and you can see the slight differences between left and right in the waveform display. I also did a quick A and B comparison, but please forgive me the video wobbles - my camera was badly clamped :/

I'm still not sure about the whole clone thing though. The ethics seem to be about defining who's being ripped off: The company or the consumer.

Oli Freke Announces Two New Synthesizer Books

Oli Freke, author of Synthesizer Evolution, has announced two new books in the series, "Vintage Synths" & "Drum Machines and Samplers".

Details on each follow.

Oli Freke, ‘Vintage Synths’

Following on from his 2021 book, Synthesizer Evolution: From Analogue to Digital (and Back), Oli Freke returns with a Synthesizer Evolution A6 zine series.

Vintage Synths celebrates that invention and its subsequent history by picking out 46 of the most influential, important or most interesting synths from 1939 – 1998. They each represent the introduction of a new technology, had particular impact, or maybe even formed the basis of entirely new genres.

Plantasia - Mort Garson. (Midi Visualizer). The Well Tempered Synth

video upload by The Well-Tempered Synth

Xaoc Devices Rostock & Drezno II: new patch ideas for the Leibniz Binary Subsystem

video upload by Tom Churchill

"In this video, I’m taking another look at the Leibniz Binary Subsystem from Xaoc Devices. This is a set of Eurorack modules that let you convert analogue audio and CV into 8-bit digital signals and then process them in all sorts of unique and interesting ways. Using various combinations of Leibniz modules, you can do everything from waveshaping and bitcrushing to sequencing and drum pattern generation.

Xaoc Devices recently sent over the latest modules in the system for me to check out. Drezno II is a new and improved version of their original analogue to digital and digital to analogue converter module which acts as the main front-end for the system. And Rostock is a binary data pipeline, or digital shift register, which lets you delay, loop, scramble and reclock the 8-bit data stream. In the video, I build a few patches that explore some of the musical applications of these tools."

TitpTop Audio Art Octopus, ATX1 and Vortex, O/C module and Error Instruments White Rabbit

video upload by Luca Longobardi

"Another short session with the new TipTop Audio Art modules.
I was exploring the Poly Voice Management of the Octopus, the module that ‘conducts’ the three ART oscillators. In the first part, the simple arpeggio played on the Arturia Keystep is reproduced in order by the first ATX1 (Midi channel 1), the second ATX1 (Midi channel 2) and the Vortex (Midi channel 3). It is easy to follow the change by looking at the red LED that lights up on the modules or the ADSR that is activated on the O/C in the case of the first two oscillators. Things get interesting when you manually switch from Mono 8 mode (one midi channel for each oscillator) to Poly 3, Poly 4, etc. These modes are designed to use oscillators in polyphony, playing chords as you do on a polyphonic synth. By sending a sequence instead, the notes are distributed one after the other among the different oscillators which, with different settings, create an ever-changing melody. A very unique way to make a sequence more interesting I think.
P.s.
The drone you hear comes from the TX-6 while the delay is the White Rabbit by Error Instruments."

natural park #2 / ambient mutable instrument in the wild

video upload by Tom Leclerc

"EN//
The Residence - The Tale of Silence - in Auvergne, France is a collaboration between photographer Joséphine Leroux and artist/musician Tom Leclerc. Capturing suspended moments of life, composition, exploration, and optimism lie at the heart of this journey of writing and documenting Tom's upcoming album. This album is the creation of a genuine natural park that can be listened to, where details, microcosms, and sonic curiosities blend in a unique acoustic ballad.

The challenge today is to offer a new, friendly, inspiring, and curiosity-inducing imagination for the delicate and bucolic nature. With this collaboration, it is also a genuine artistic exploration of the narrative of tomorrow and tranquility.

Armed with his experience with the Moss Explorer collective, Tom Leclerc is accustomed to the mountains and their inspiring secrets, which lead him to discover new forms of art production and dissemination in nature. Composing with nature is not an easy task; one must learn to let go.

In the age of capitalist anxiety, the search for tranquility becomes a difficult endeavor. And when we finally find it, we are already thinking of finding it again. In these places, the natural and ephemeral orchestra is alive; it can invite us to compose with it. I seek to bear witness to these moments to offer the world these new imaginaries.

And there are those moments, at the turn of a mountain's contour, where sound comes to life and offers us a true tale of silence.

"The ensemble is made of 4x vintage Oberheim SEM modules, revised and calibrated, a good psu, plus a 4 voices mixer inspired by FVS mixer, a Vermona 4 channels midi interface, packed in a tailored-fitted, pro-built flighcase. One of the SEM has cheese-like cheeks (a lots of mods where installed on this one) but it is back to original specs now. New face panels exists as well.

While it was built to stay true to the original Four Voice by Tom Oberheim - it is also quite easy to add a ton of patch points and convert this to a modular dream-machine"

Never seen one of these before. Note the video above is not for the listing. I found it searching Youtube for a demo of one. Roland also made the MT-300. The MT300 has MIDI out while the MT80s does not, which means the MT80s is solely a MIDI player and cannot be used to sequence external gear.

Analog synth jam with the Roland SH-101, Moog Subsequent 37, Walrus Sloër, Source Audio Ventris

A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I got an SH-101. Yes, it's simple. But I love its particular sound and find it endlessly deep and soothing. Thinking of it that way made me think to pair it with the Subsequent 37, another synth that provokes exactly the same feeling. Turns out the two make a good team.
