How Synthesizers Changed Music History

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"🎛️ The History of Synthesizers
From the massive Telharmonium of 1901 to today’s sleek soft synths, this video takes you through 150 years of electronic music innovation. Learn how electricity first made sound, how Moog and Buchla shaped the synth revolution, how digital FM and sampling changed everything in the '80s, and how modern VSTs like Serum and Omnisphere continue the legacy.
Along the way, you'll meet legends like Robert Moog, Don Buchla, Wendy Carlos, and Dave Smith—and discover the instruments that changed the sound of pop, rock, hip-hop, EDM, and film forever.
🧠 Whether you're a synth nerd or just curious how your favourite sounds came to be, this video is your complete crash course."

Dr. Endo explores LIVEN Evoke: Days

Dr. Endo – Live Set
PTN08: Days
---
Jammed a bit today with the LIVEN Evoke.
There’s always something going on in life, but just being able to spend another ordinary day feels incredibly precious and meaningful.
That’s the feeling I had in mind when making this track.
The melody is played on violin, with upright piano handling the accompaniment.
There’s also a second piano part in the higher range, set to trigger notes randomly using the Dice function at a 34% chance—so the phrasing changes subtly each time it plays.
That high-pitched piano is also sent through GRAIN FX, with the send level modulated slowly by an LFO.
This adds a soft, fading texture as the grain effect comes and goes gently over time.
I also layered in some noise to create a quiet, rain-like background.

Yu Endo
---

All the equipment we will be using for making music today was brought to the market before the year 2000 and while you might be longing for the workflows of these seemingly simpler times - be careful what you wish for.

20 voice UDO Super 8+ // How to Upgrade Your Super 8

video upload by Starsky Carr

"4 extra voices for your UDO SUPER 8 to bring the total count to 20 voices, or 10 binaural voices to give it the same as the SUPER GEMINI It's a simple procedure if you follow the instructions:

Undo the crews at the back,
Under the front lip and
All but one at the sides (leaving one as a hinge),
Then a couple from the bottom.

Open the lid, and pop in the boards - just like memory boards in a PC. Then screw everything back together.

Upload the latest firmware
Calibrate the new voices

then you're good to go."

Experimental Beats w/ Nord Lead, Modular Synth, Grandmother | Broken step 2025-06-20

video upload by atnr

"A track built with ‪@NordKeyboards‬ Nord Lead, a modular synth, and ‪@MoogSynthesizers‬ Grandmother—IDM driven by wildly shifting beats and modulation-rich stabs.

Modular drums: Two Mutable Instruments Plaits, an ‪@instruo‬ Instruō Cs-L, and a Basimilus Iteritas form the beat architecture.

Sequencing comes from a monome Grid and White Whale, with extra trigger multiplication/division via a 4ms Quad Clock Distributor (QCD).

Kick: Plaits through a ‪@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC‬ QPAS filter, shaped by a Function envelope.
Metallic percussion: Another Plaits voice.
Tom-like hits: Layered Cs-L and Basimilus Iteritas.

Nord Lead: Heavily modulated to create metallic stabs, processed with reverb from a ‪@gfisys‬ Specular Tempus."

TWO EKO RHYTHMAKER DRUM MACHINES GO TO BATTLE

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"EKO RHYTHMAKER - BIX BOX MODEL VS REGULAR SIZE - One is big - one is small - which one sounds the best?

1970 - the Rhythmaker is an analog drum machine from Italy's EKO, originally makers of guitars and amps. The Rhythmaker was one of their earlier attempts at drum machines that would later result in the legendary EKO ComputeRhythm, used by all the real synth pros of the 1970s - or at least those who could get their hands on one.

These are two different versions of the same model Eko Rhythmaker analog vintage drum machine - with identical features and preset rhythms - but they sound quite different.

Both front panels has 16 push buttons for rhythms of standard fare : Jazz, Mambo, Rock etc. These could potentially be engaged all at the same time, giving you a cacophony of poly rhythms.

On both units we find 3 potentiometers : Volume, Tempo and Sustain, the last one is a bit of a mystery since it only seems to change the pitch of a few sounds.

Quite a novelty at the time, and the reason we like the Rhythmaker so much, is the individual volume control of each of the 7 drum sounds.
Here the bigger version offers longer sliders, to more precisely dial in the volume desired.

The smaller guy is a bit punchier and warmer sounding maybe?

Light up the comment section and let us hear your thoughts."

Ancient Passage

video upload by davidryle

"This basis of this project was between the new Synthetic Sound Labs 1655 Geo-Gruvn euclidean sequencer and a few different Low Pass Filter modules. The new SSL 1015 LPG with the cadmium sulfide CdS element, the Mega Ohm Audio CdS VCF/A module and the Cyndustries Quad Low Pass Gates module. The Cyndustries module was enhanced by Phil from Mega Ohm Audio to be much more responsive. A big change and very useful.

The Geo-Gruvn module from SSL is an adaption of the Hagiwo board and was also enhanced to provide a more efficient response all the way to audio rate clocking.

The main orchestration automation module in this piece was with the synthesizers.com Q170 Midi Gates module. The use of eight channels of midi gate streams from Cubase were the way each section were enabled on and off. My hands-on modulation was simplified to allow me to change timbre, filter settings and delay rates with ease.

The center section featured the Dove Mu-Seq D900 sequencer for a pattern which began by me running the sequencer in reverse and recording the track to Cubase, then reversing it back into the mix. I started with the Woven Spirits (MI Plaits) at a higher octave and drew it down until it matched the timbre for the rest of the midsection.

The last part was the dual Matrix run into a pair of quantizer modules in which I timed the pitch voltage outputs with the Geo-Gruvn gate outs. These voices were the Dotcom Q206 and Q206A modules through the Frequency Central X Series Low Pass Filter and an Empress Reverb pedal.

Other delays included the Modcan 73B dual delay with loads of modulation, and the SSL 1310 Digital Delay.

The opening drone is a feedback from the TipTop Audio Z-DSP VC-Digital Signal Processor with the Halls of Valhalla chipset in Plate Reverb mode. This drone also arose in the center section.

A pair of frequency shifter modules (Encore Electronics and Behringer Bode Clone) were used for the Snare and Hi Hats enhancement. The kit drums were the LDB-2E Analog Drums from Delptronics and the TipTop SD808. They were sequenced from the Mutable Instruments Grids module and a pair of Turing Machines and an MI Marbles module."
