Captain Credible - Dead Cats EP Release as a Printed Circuitboard

What is Dead Cats generative EP? (and why is it?) Published on Sep 25, 2015 Captain Credible

Captain Credible wrote in to let us know about his upcoming "Dead Cats" EP (currently available for pre-order here). What makes this particular EP unique is that as a creator of electronic instruments, Captain Credible decided to release it as a printed circuitboard, with each one featuring a different version of the final track, "main.h". The track is actually generated by the circuit board (see the main.h SoundCloud embed below for an example). The board is Arduino based, and Captain Credible made the code available here.

"Captain Credible is an electronica artist based in Oslo. Known for his violently eccentric live performances and arsenal of homemade instruments, he plays angry electronic music influenced by punk and old video games. The Captain refers to his sounds as 'filthy drunk beats bathing in a lake of melting synthesizers and old Nintendo cartridges'.

October 2015 brings with it the release of the EP 'Dead Cats' on Metronomicon Audio. This is the first in a series of 3 printed circuitboards. Unlike a traditional EP, Dead Cats is different for every copy of the physical release. Alongside the 5 downloadable tracks, each circuit board generates its own version of the final track 'main.h' using your download code as its source of inspiration. Simply plug your headphones into the headphone jack and absorbe the harsh reality that is the robot takeover of the cultural market.

The release also marks a new liveset with hand crafted space-age, razor sharp instruments utilizing a unique system of visual feedback. Causing epileptic fits and temporary blindness to both audience and performer."

Rough footage Cpt Credible Live2014

Published on Aug 8, 2014 Captain Credible

"Just a rough sketch of the new instruments in the wild, more and better footage in the making. Finally mankind has instruments that induce epileptic fits while you play them! Hooray!"

A quick side note: Captain Credible is also a supporter of the site! Thank you Captain Credible!

"Baby baby ive been busy,

Here is 3 synthesizers I Finally got round to putting together in the last 3 months. I put them in my fine art degree show so I got to get some good snaps of them.

left to right [top down]

Dual MFOS Soundlab and Keyboard
with S+H and Drum trigger
the mixers can take all 4 of the available oscillators

ASM-2 semi-modular
without patching the left side is 2 saws to state variable then vca
right 2 squares to LP moog then VCA

CLONE MODULAR
Built to act like a traditional subtractive modular. stupidly dense ( it needs to be due to lack of bedroom space ) trying to fit a sort of bank of well know filters thats , polivoks, steiner, arp, moog, korg ms20, korg resonator, ems, wasp etc - 6 YU vco's and some unusual modules like fritz chaos , tube vca, S+H/T+H, attenuverter, Noise cornicopia . with a little vca bank, it should be possible to get about 5 voices going at once. the mixers are not yet on it ( they go in the 1 u strips ) . 2xfritz AR 2xMFOS AR 1xYUADSR 1xMFOS ADSR - the mfos AR has repeat so it should double up as a sort of trapezoid LFO. It should be possible when its complete to do some FM experiments too"

Breakaway Vocalizer 1000 SN 006519

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Breakaway 1000 is a voice controlled music synthesizer. You hum into a microphone and it comes out as any synth sound you choose. It has 28 voices to choose from.

The best thing is that it is also an Analog-to-MIDI converter. You can plug a 1/4" jack into it (guitar, say) and use the MIDI OUT jack to trigger any other MIDI instrument from your guitar, voice, keyboard, or what-have-you!

The Breakaway also has 5-track digital recording capabilities with a memory of over 1000 notes, along with built-in drum machine and bass accompaniment.

Breakaway Vocalizer 1000 was released in 1988, (licensed to Breakaway by the Eltrex Corp.) and sold thru the Sharper Image Catalog, Montgomery Ward stores, and distributed by Tascam.

It's notoriety has climbed in recent years as emerging electronic musicians clamored for a means to generate MIDI sounds using only their voice. It was discovered these Breakaway "toys" were actually quite capable instruments - able to track and playback to the nearest 32nd of a semitone. The on-board tone generator was co-developed by Ensoniq, a leader in music technology back then. The unit could also track the pitch of just about any sound-producing object and generate corresponding MIDI triggers. Even today, it is sought after by harmonica players as one of the best MIDI input devices available.

Specifications:

Synthesis: Stereo, sampled waveforms.

Sound Tracks: 10 notes polyphonic and polytimbral.

Octaves: Over 7 octave range.

Instruments:

-28 preset lead instruments, built-in: piano, electric piano, piano strings, electric organ, electric guitar, fuzz guitar, electric bass guitar, slap bass guitar, flute, whistle, clarinet, harmonica, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, synthesizer brass, violin, cello, string bass, synthesizer strings, bells, marimba, steel drum, synthesizer drums, and four zany sounds; plus five drums: snare drum, bass drum, high hat, cymbal, tom.

Effects: Stereo chorus, stereo harmony, stereo echo, slide (continuous) control.

Voice Guide: Voice Guide, and Melody Guide (for song cartridges with known melodies).

SmartSongs Styles:

-12 Jam Pattern styles: rock 1, rock 2, rock 3, rock 4, soul 1, soul 2, latin 1, latin 2, jazz, blues, reggae, and country; each with different drum, bass and chord patterns.

SmartSongs Options:

-Variations: Each background has two "song" variations (verse and chorus), and two "rhythm" variations (bass or drum rhythm variations).

-levels of Accompaniment: 4 levels of accompaniment: Drums only / Drums and bass / Bass and chord / Full background SmartSong.

-Ending: Special pre-recorded finale to each SmartSong*

Steve H Plays Buchla Easel at Superbooth Berlin 2017

Published on May 2, 2017 steveHmusic

"Steve H performs his Buchla Easel Immersion concert at Superbooth 2017 Seaside Stage.

It was a very cold, rainy day in Berlin when Steve H, AKA Steve Horelick, performed another one of his Buchla Easel 3D Sound Immersion series concerts. The Seaside stage, floating in a small lake, facing amphitheater style seating, provided a beautiful backdrop to the canvas of sound.

The sound is entirely created on ht e Buchla Easel. The "canvas" is created primarily in Logic using foot controlled sends to route the Easel to different FX aux channels. Logic's Environment is where MIDI modulators are rerouted to control surround panning. This recording is captured live from stereo mics... not through the console.

The Smallest MIDI Synth Again... - Now with FM

Published on Oct 18, 2019 mitxela

via H-Pi Instruments

"H-Pi Instruments has teamed up with mitxela (the genius behind the world's smallest MIDI synthesizer) to bring you FLASH, the world's first and only very-tiny MIDI-powered polyphonic microtonal FM synthesizer. Two years in development, this little 16-voice wonder fits in your pocket and doesn't require a power supply. Just plug it into a standard MIDI OUT port*, plug in your headphones, and away you go!

FLASH features unlimited dynamic General MIDI microtuning for ease-of-use with 16-channel polyphonic tuned output from TBX2, TBX1, and Tonal Plexus TPX keyboards, and also features a mini UART-programmer which allows you to assign unique microtonal tuning tables to each of 16 MIDI input channels for full microtonal output compatibility with literally thousands of standard MIDI controllers as well as multichannel controllers like MIDI guitars and MIDI organs without a tuning device, not to mention advanced 2048 unique-pitch-output for the Tonal Plexus and other microtonal controllers like the Microzone, Axis 64, and Terpstra keyboards. Of course you can also use it as a normal synth with normal tuning ... if you're into that sort of thing.

The FLASH UART-programmer interfaces via USB with Universal Tuning Editor (UTE) cross-platform software (free license included), so you can edit tunings and upload them to the synth. Firmware is also user-upgradable via the programmer, so features can be improved or added at any time."

Pi at the absolute limit!

Published on Oct 9, 2014 Pi Synth

"Brought a desktop environment back onto my Pi for this test, which saw it right on the edge of collapse. Apologies for the carnage on my desk by the way, I have a cable hell thing going on ...

But here is a Pi clocked at 'High' / 950MHz, *JUST* getting through the Slade test - in fact you can hear me laugh at one point when the handclap comes in and the 3D 'hello_triangle' test visibly stutters horribly! But you can't really hear any glitches, even though some events definitely got backed up as synthesis took too many cycles.

But a fine achievement for the little Pi - desktop environment, plus top -H, plus a 720p full-screen 3D demo, PLUS PIANA playing 7 notes of polyphony from 7 independently-configured synths.

A bit more detail for the obsessives -

The 'tune' was sequenced in Logic. Logic is playing it out of my Mac as a MIDI stream, which is routed for a variety of odd reasons through an M-Axiom Axiom 49 (USB input, out through Physical MIDI 5-pin DIN) into an inexpensive USB to MIDI adapter so that it can then be seen by the Pi as USB MIDI. The Pi synthesizes the sound and emits it through a USB audio adapter into my lovely little Minirig. The fact that a CME Pro, the USB adapter, a Bluetooth keyboard and USB audio are all hung off the Pi speaks volumes to how much they have improved USB performance in the last 2 years. The Pi is running whatever the stock desktop is that came with it, and to monitor CPU usage I have a terminal running top -H, and to really stress the cack out of it, particularly the memory interface, I have a full-screen OpenGL ES thing running.

And it works fine, but hell's bells it is redlining - the green CPU monitor bottom right shows nothign left, and that is reflected in both top -H and in my own monitoring within PIANA which tells me how close to 44100 the achieved sample render rate was, as a percentage. So the lower the better, and you can see numbers of 64-70% on screen as I lean in. 100% is bad, and it does exceed 100% at times, meaning some packets ate into the insurance policy, which is about 8 packets wide - so if 8 packets back to back average at 100% or greater, you will hear a glitch.

Impressive though, the Pi, despite being feeble and useless, is also pretty damn great. See how conflicted I am?!?!"

Modded Roland TR-505 Rhythm Composer

via this auction

"This unit has been modified to accept a circuit board that provides individual outputs. You can see the outputs on the back panel in the images. Some sounds are shared on the same output, but the kick and snare have their own outs. The output jacks are 1/16". Included are 4 - 1/16" to RCA cables. The modification was an after market option offered by another company not Roland."

Update via Keegan in the comments: "Left to right: Bass, Snare, Hand Clap/Rim Shot, L/H Cowbell, L/H Conga, Closed/Open HH, Crash/Ride, L/M/H Tom.

They are grouped together because you can only play one of each sound at a time.

Anyone have any info on this mod? I'd like to do it to my 505."

via Ian: "http://www.burnkit2600.com/tr-505/ has info for getting individual outputs (among other things.)"

Derek Revell's EMS VSC3 Clone Project

Full details on Derek Revell's website. PCBs are now available if you'd like to make your own EMS Synthi A or VCS3 clone.

The bottom image here is the clone.

"I have made the clone , using the dimensions of the original VCS3 they are H 44cm x W 43cm x D 42cm.

The panels sizes are upper W 40cm x H 32cm x 2mm and the lower panel is W 40cm H 30cm x 2mm.

The VCS3 clone is complete on 16/03/2010, but needs fully calibrating, as there are some differences with the pots and internal wiring.

I was fortunate enough to obtain the almost complete circuit diagrams of the VCS3/Synthi A, unfortunately there are so many errors in the drawings, compared with the actual circuit boards, and the internal wiring of the patch panel and front panel potentiometers that I decided to completely re-draw the originals, a very time consuming task, I have also finished the track layouts of the three main PCB's."

Modular + Pedals

Published on Jan 8, 2018 Modular + Pedals

Playlist:

1. Modular + Pedals #1: Rings - Boss DM-2w
Self-playing ambient patch. Patch notes below.

Boss DM-2w connected and modulated via ALM Busy Circuits S.B.G Stompbox Gateway.

Patch notes:

ALM Busy Circuits Pamela's New Workout is supplying pitch CV, modulation, and triggers for the whole patch.

Channel 1 and 2 are running two different euclidean patterns of attenuated and offset random CV, those are joined by the precision adder on Mutable Instruments Links and then sent to the Intellijel uScale II, and then to Rings.

Channels 3, 4, 7 and 8 are sending LFO to brightness, frequency, damping and position on Rings.

Channel 6 is sending triggers to the trigger in on Clouds.

Channel 5 is sending a heavily attenuated random CV to the EXP input on the S.B.G, which is then converted to expression pedal, and sent to the expression pedal input on the Boss DM-2w.

All channels on Pam's are making heavy use of the random step skipping.

Mutable Instruments Rings is in sympathetic strings mode with 4 note polyphony. The odd output is patched into the input of the S.B.G, out to the Boss DM-2w and back again, and from there to the Clouds.

Boss DM-2w is in the custom mode, with medium feedback.

Mutable Instruments Clouds is the last step in the patch, adding some extra ambience and some stereo movement.
