Audio d-touch is a collection of applications for real-time musical composition and performance, with very special user interfaces. The collection includes a drum machine and a sampling sequencer, both are controlled by spatially arranging physical objects on
an interactive table surface. Each object represents a sound, and its position with respect to the surface is mapped to certain playback parameters. For example, the horizontal position of an object represents the timing of the sound. The system is extremely low cost
and now it can be freely and fully downloaded from http://www.d-touch.org/audio. All is needed to get audio d-touch to work is a standard computer (PC or Mac) with a webcam and a printer.
The audio d-touch interactive surface consists of a simple printed piece of paper. The movable physical objects are marked using labels, also printed on normal paper. The computer observes the blocks and the paper through a low cost web-cam, and thanks to the d-touch marker recognition algorithm it can localize them precisely. The information about the position and orientation of each block is used to control a digital audio synthesis process. The system was designed to be extremely low cost, robust and easy to set up, which makes it possible to fully and freely release it for download.
In the research field of computer interfaces the audio d-touch interface is known as a tangible user interface: physical objects are used for the control and representation of digital information. While tangible interfaces have been well known in academic research circles for some 15 years, audio d-touch is the first attempt to make them accessible to a larger audience, requiring only products that are available in any local computer store. Audio d-touch allows people to set up and to use tangible interfaces in their own home, office, recording studio, or wherever else they like.
The release of audio d-touch is itself part of a research project about novel computer interfaces. Our aim is to advance the field by gaining insight on how tangible interfaces may be used in the real world. Please help us by trying out the applications, letting us know what you think and spreading the word about audio d-touch! To inform our research we remotely record usage data from the system, in the respect of our users' privacy: we do not record images, but only the positions of the objects in the interface and the sounds recorded on them (all details are available on the download page on d-touch.org).
The design of audio d-touch was inspired and motivated by a passion for electronic music (electronica) and minimalism shared by Enrico Costanza and Simon Shelley: the
collaboration resulted in the incredibly fast production of a number of prototypes in 2003, thanks also to the great encouragement that they received from the Media Engineering Group at the University of York. In the following years Enrico continued to develop audio d- touch as a side activity, while his day job as researcher at Media Lab Europe and MIT Media lab focused on mobile devices. Part of the original d-touch recognition system was adopted by the colleagues and friends developing Reactable at UPF in Barcelona. In 2006 the Italian composer and cellist Giovanni Sollima became interested in the sequencer and has used it in a number of public performances right up until the present day. In early 2009 Matteo Giaccone and Olivier Küng joined Enrico, who in the meantime had moved to the Media and Design lab at EPFL, and their enthusiasm and technical contribution was key for making audio d-touch truly multi-platform and available for download.

Symbolic Sound Unveils “Pacamara Ristretto” Audio Processing Unit (APU)
2.5 times performance boost, 20% lower price, expanded connectivity, and inter-application audio
CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS — Symbolic Sound announces a new Audio Processing Unit (APU) representing a giant leap forward in performance, energy efficiency, and connectivity over previous generation APUs. At less than half the size, the new Pacamara “Ristretto” delivers, on average, a 2.5 times jump in performance, a 20% reduction in cost, cooler operating temperature, expanded connectivity options, and seamless inter-application routing of audio and MIDI to/from applications running on a host computer.
Performance Pacamara Ristretto’s compute-cycles and memory are solely dedicated to sound computation, delivering unprecedented levels of performance capabilities to sound designers for film and games, live electronic music performers, sound artists, educators, researchers, and audio professionals who require the highest-quality real-time audio, responsive live interaction, and unbounded creative flexibility from their tools.
“The Pacamara Ristretto represents a radical transformation, not just because it’s Symbolic Sound’s most powerful external APU yet, but because of the ease with which it communicates with the rest of the world,” said Symbolic Sound’s president Carla Scaletti. “Audio, MIDI, and OSC streams can be freely routed between Kyma and other audio applications on your computer and audio devices in your studio, including across LANs and out onto the Internet, creating a combinatorial explosion of sound creation possibilities.”
According to game/film sound design consultant and Pacamara field tester, Alan M. Jackson, “It’s the latest, most powerful revision of the most important audio DSP environment of the last 30 years.”
Powered by Kyma Audio professionals can leverage the full Kyma 7 accelerated sound design environment for rapid prototyping, testing, creative exploration, and refinement of production-quality sound synthesis and processing algorithms to run in real time on the Pacamara Ristretto.
Kyma, described as a “recombinant sound design environment,” gives sound designers access to extensive libraries of unique audio synthesis and processing modules, along with tools for creating limitless combinations of those algorithms. Galleries of automatically-generated signal flow graphs help speed development, spark the imagination and boost the creative flow — providing creators with the advanced models needed to solve sound design challenges for games, film, live music, data sonification, voice processing, multi-sensor controllers, and more.
Deep integration between hardware and software has always been central to the Symbolic Sound approach. Hardware design is continually informed by software development and vice versa. As a result, the Kyma 7 sound development environment is optimally tuned to take full advantage of the huge increases in processing and memory bandwidth made available by the new Pacamara APU.
Sound designer and musician Cristian Vogel describes the Kyma software environment as “the best for innovating, prototyping and designing innovative digital sound processes… frictionless for ideation and research. Then, reliable and consistent at the outcome stage.”
The Pacamara Ristretto is as comprehensive in its connectivity as it is diminutive in size. The back panel of the rugged, roadworthy enclosure includes:
• USB-C port for audio and MIDI transfer to/from host computer • Two USB 2.0 ports for connecting audio interfaces and MIDI controllers • 3.5 mm jack sockets for mic input and stereo headphone output • RJ-45 network port to connect via a gigabit Ethernet cable to a host computer • Wi-Fi antenna jack • USB-C power input port
An APU does for Real-time Audio what a GPU does for Real-time Graphics Audio professionals require high quality, low latency, reliable real-time audio synthesis and processing. That’s what an APU can deliver.
“The question is not whether a CPU is capable of real-time graphics generation and processing. Everyone understands the advantages of offloading real-time graphics computation onto one or more GPU(s) running in parallel with your main CPU. Not only does it free up memory and computing resources on your CPU, a GPU guarantees the highest-quality, glitch-free interactive real-time graphic performance. The same is true for audio!”
“With the Pacamara you have high quality, configurable algorithms running on dedicated, uncontended hardware,” explains Jackson, “The result is that it sounds great and it’s reliable.”
Soft Hardware Unlike traditional audio hardware, which has a fixed functionality that never changes, the Pacamara Ristretto can adapt to the evolving needs of users. Regular, significant software updates ensure that Symbolic Sound APUs continue to gain features and functionality so that they actually improve with time.
Jackson adds, “there’s a subtle and important difference between hardware that is upgradeable… and hardware that DOES get upgraded continuously and significantly. Kyma is [Symbolic Sound’s] only product and [they’ve] been working on it, passionately, for decades. [They] have a proven history of constant and significant upgrades.”
What’s in a Name? The name, Pacamara, comes from a hybrid coffee plant bred to produce larger beans on smaller trees planted closer together — evoking both the ‘recombinant sound’ design philosophy of Kyma and the smaller size, higher-yield of the Pacamara APUs. According to Scaletti, “Coffee aficionados know that a ristretto shot delivers twice the caffeine per milliliter as a standard shot of espresso. The Pacamara Ristretto is actually 2.5 times more powerful and less than half (44%) the volume of previous generations, meaning that the computational performance by volume has increased 5.7-fold.”
Summary The Pacamara Ristretto is an APU, designed from the ground up for real-time sound synthesis and processing; it works in parallel with your main computer to deliver high-quality real-time audio signal computation, freeing up resources on the CPU for managing your overall studio workflow.
Audio professionals can leverage the full Kyma 7 accelerated sound design environment for rapid prototyping, testing, creative exploration, and refinement of production-quality sound synthesis and processing algorithms to run in real time on the Pacamara Ristretto.
The Pacamara Ristretto APU is the most recent development in a consistent flow of innovation from Symbolic Sound — from Capybara, to Capybara 33, Capybara 66, Capybara 320, Paca(rana) — the sixth generation Pacamara Ristretto APU is groundbreaking in terms of raw compute power, delivering a 2.5-fold leap forward in performance, connectivity, and dependability backed by extensive field testing in real world performance environments.

"This is the Receptor PRO Jr., meaning it has the upgraded CPU and RAM but origanlly had 400 gb smaller hard drive and was upgraded to a 750 gb drive which was the largest in this series of units, so you have more than enough space.
It is mounted within a 2"foam re-inforced Anvil road with removable front and back case.
Also included are the following software programs (worth hundreds of dollars): Spectrasonics Atmosphere, Native Instruments B4II, Kompakt Nostalgia, Bosendorfer Ivory, MTron, and SampleTank 2. Look them up. You would pay over $800 in software to buy these package programs. I have never toured with this rig and it has limited hours on the machine. I used it in 2008 for a recording session. The strings/mellotrons on Rocco Deluca's "Mercy" album, recorded with Daniel Lanois were from this Muse Receptor.
Also incuded is a 17" Envision Monitor, a full sized typing keyboard and a mouse.
Other soft-synth programs that come inside this machine ( I am picking out the better ones... ) include: 4 Front Bass Module, 4 Front EPiano Module, 4 Front Piano Module, 4 Front Rhode Module, A Sine, Cheese Machine, Claw, ComboSister, CosmoGirl, Crystal, daAlfa2k, daHornet, Delay Lama, Drawbar, Drum Kid 4, DX10, E-Flex, EMM Knagalis, Enigmatron, ePiano, EVE, Express 3, Free Alpha, GTG 7, GTG Micro, JG-3, LogSynth, MPS.1, Mysteron, OnePingOnly, Pandemonium, PDPoly, Piano, PQNCooly, PQN Mopar, sf2, Synger

You can play audio samples directly from the 16 pads on the panel, making it easy to expand your performances with loops, backing tracks, one-shots, vocal phrases, sound FX, and more. Thanks to SDHC flash memory, your samples load instantly with no wait time, and you can use the four pad banks and clipboard function to rearrange your samples as needed for any performance. It’s super-easy to sample the workstation’s own sounds or external sources via the Mic/Guitar and Line inputs, and you can even play WAV, AIFF, or MP3 samples that you’ve transferred from your computer. A variety of editing features allow you to tweak your samples to taste, including quick adjustment of playback position and level. In addition to sample triggering, the pads can be used for numerous functions such as muting parts, entering numeric values in the display, and more.
Enhance Your Sounds with a Wide Range of Simultaneous Effects
With its large selection of pro effects, the FA series provides numerous options for polishing your sounds and sequencer tracks to studio-level perfection. Independent MFX engines are available for all 16 parts of a Studio Set, giving you an enormous level of sound shaping for both live playing and song mixing. Each MFX engine contains 67 different effects types to choose from, with an additional option of a vocoder when MFX are used with Part 1. Six separate COMP+EQ processors are dedicated for individual drum sounds, while global EQ, chorus, and reverb are on tap to add a finishing touch to any of your parts as needed. With the unique TFX (total effects), you also have the ability to process the entire output of the workstation with dramatic effects such as DJ FX Looper, Isolator, and many others. All the effects can be tweaked in real time via the Sound Modify knobs, making it simple to enhance your keyboard playing, sampling, and sequencer tracks with dynamic sonic textures.
Fast Workflow and Intuitive Real-Time Control
You can feel the speed of this new breed of instrument the moment you hit the power switch—unlike many workstations that can take a minute or more to boot, the FA series is ready to play in seconds. The panel is logically organized into dedicated sections, and the large color LCD presents a gorgeous look with inviting hi-res graphics for selecting tones, working with the sequencer, and adjusting various settings. It’s easy to navigate through the workstation’s large sound selection by category and assign favorites for fast recall, while dedicated buttons deliver instant access to often-used functions such as transpose, octave range, and many others. With six knobs and a powerful yet easy-to-use assignment matrix, the Sound Modify section lets you control a wide range of parameters in real time for maximum expression while performing live and working in the studio."
"Roland popped down a couple of days ago to give us the skinny on a new product which was released today. Taking the legacy of the Fantom workstations and combining the pallette of the sonically stuffed Integra-7 sound module, and performance chops from the recent Junos and Jupiters, plus a large colour display, the FA06 and FA08 (88 weighted keys) are Roland's new take on the keyboard workstation.
With 128 voice polyphony, 16 part sequencer (each with dedicated FX plus a total FX), it's got enough voices to handle some complex productions.
The all new (ground up design) sequencer integrates with the on-board sampler to create a flexible workflow as far as we can see."

At Synthfest UK 2023, we caught up with Calc from Sequential, and he gave us the lowdown on the Prophet X. Now, you might be thinking, Prophet X? Haven't we seen that before? Well, you're right, but this hybrid instrument has been quietly making waves in the music world. It combines digital and analog elements, with digital oscillators and a unique twist in the form of multi-sample-based instruments. Yes, you heard that right, it's not just your run-of-the-mill synth; it's a full-on sampler too, boasting an impressive 50 gigabytes of memory for your custom samples. You can treat it like a rompler, a sample player, or even use those samples as oscillators, creating a whole new realm of sonic possibilities.
Plus, it's packed with stereo goodness, allowing you to explore a wide soundstage with ease. It's not your typical synth, and that's what makes its a favourute of Calc's

"An introduction to Bela. This video accompanies our Kickstarter campaign which will be on until April 1st 2016."
This one is in via MATRIXSYNTH reader Giulio who is on the Bela team.
"The most important unique feature of Bela is that it has extremely low latency of less than 1 millisecond from action to sound. This is much lower than can be achieved on any laptop or embedded computer on the market. Low latency is critically important for making intuitive and responsive musical instruments.
Other notable features include 16-bit analog inputs and outputs (8 each), onboard speaker amplifiers and a browser-based IDE (complete with oscilloscope). The project is open source hardware and software. This is basically the platform we've always wanted for building interactive audio systems, and we're excited to share it with a broader community of musicians, engineers and makers!
Bela is currently on Kickstarter where we greatly exceeded our initial goal, so much that we added new features to the board. Extended blog posts, tech specs, faqs and more examples at our website http://bela.io"
Update: I originally thought the CTRL-49 had the ability to load VSTs onboard, minus the computer, much like the MUSE Recepter, but it appears you still need the computer connected to run the VSTs.
"M-AUDIO ADDS REVOLUTIONARY VIP SOFTWARE TO ITS LEGENDARY KEYBOARDS IN GROUNDBREAKING NEW CTRL 49 CONTROLLER
Producers can now load, play and control all their virtual instrument plugins directly from the CTRL 49 keyboard, for seamless hands-on performance and perfect VI software integration.
Cumberland RI, USA (January 21, 2016)— M-Audio (m-audio.com), synonymous with innovative music production technology, today announced the introduction of their revolutionary, premier controller, the CTRL 49. The new keyboard provides advanced control of virtual instruments and DAWs via a full-color, high-resolution 4.3-inch screen. It features a 49-key semi-weighted keybed, and the directional cluster of hardware controls has been meticulously thought out for effortless operation. Producers will find the CTRL 49 to be an inspiring and intuitive experience.
The CTRL 49 is powered by the included Virtual Instrument Player (VIP) software. VIP software enables users to access any VSTi virtual instrument or effect in their computer directly from the keyboard. Users can quickly filter and search through every patch in their plugin library by using the built-in tagging function, making it simple to find the sound they’re after quickly. VIP auto-maps the CTRL 49’s controls to the selected plugin, and displays the plugin parameters directly on the full-color display for a natural, familiar 1:1 workstation-style experience.
VIP software in the CTRL 49 also creates a multi directly from the keyboard. Using a multi, producers can combine up to 8 patches from 1 or more plugins, and have the option to layer, mix and pan these patches all at once. Users can even set keyboard splits and transpose individual patches within their multi. This advanced design feature means users can save all the new sounds they’ve created and easily recall them at any point.
For optimum live performance use, VIP software also creates 'setlists' that deliver fast on-demand access to virtual instruments and effects. With the press of a single button, users can switch to the next plugin they want—without ever reaching for a computer.
CTRL 49 Features:
• Integrated 4.3-inch high-resolution full-color screen with dedicated interface buttons
• Screen provides 1:1 real-time feedback of plugin parameters
• Includes Virtual Instrument Player software--- load, play and control any VST or effect plugin quickly
• Mackie/HUI for DAW control
• 49-key M-Audio semi-weighted keybed
• 9 faders and 8 buttons with Mackie Control® and HUI® for seamless control of the DAW
• Performance-ready 360-degree encoders
• FX button for future VIP updates
• 4 banks of 8 velocity- and pressure-sensitive drum pads with RGB illumination
• Roll mode, time division, transport, arpeggiator, and tap tempo buttons
• Functions as a standalone MIDI controller or controls your plugins and DAW simultaneously
• Includes software: Ableton Live Lite, AIR Creative Collection FX (20 World Class FX AU/VST
plugins as made famous by Pro Tools®), Vacuum Pro, Loom, Hybrid 3, Xpand!2, Velvet, Transfuser, Eighty Eight Ensemble
'The CTRL 49 is a game-changer for serious producers,' said JC Sutherland, Product Manager for M- Audio. 'Now they can access their entire virtual instrument library right from their keyboard, without ever being distracted by a computer, which makes the creative/performance process smoother than ever before. Working together, the CTRL 49 and VIP unlock your VSTs and enable them to function like actual instruments. Once you get used to this, there’s no going back.'
The M-Audio CTRL 49 has a U.S. retail price of $499
It will be available in the 2nd Quarter of 2016.
Please visit us in Hall A, Booth #6700 at Winter NAMM."
"Most Eurorack modules output very hot audio signal levels that can easily overload the inputs of effects pedals or computer audio interfaces. The audio inputs in a Eurorack system also need to receive very hot signals. AA.1 amplifies and attenuates the signals to the appropriate levels, allowing you to combine your guitar gear and Eurorack modules in just about any way you can imagine. Check out the video to see four common use cases with musical examples and signal routing explanations."

"YAMAHA SW1000XG AUDIO AND MIDI PRODUCTION CARD BREAKS NEW GROUND
-PCI Board Delivers a Complete Production Studio on a Card-
BUENA PARK, CA - Yamaha Corporation of America, Pro Audio and Combo Division, has announced the SW1000XG Digital Audio and MIDI production card with XG Works Music Software. When installed in the PCI slot of a computer running Windows 95, the SW1000XG provides a totally integrated music production studio including a professional-quality 64-note polyphonic synthesizer, 12 tracks of digital audio playback, four tracks of simultaneous audio recording and seven independent 24-bit effects processors.
XG Works, included with the SW1000XG, is a complete suite of music software applications integrated into a single package, featuring: sequencing, sound editing, notation, built-in style libraries of music data and full mix control over effects processing, digital audio and MIDI tracks. This revolutionary collection of features is the first of its kind to be available in a single, affordable, computer-based package.
"The SW1000XG delivers on the age-old dream of the 'studio in a box,'" states Athan Billias, marketing manager, Digital Musical Instruments (DMI) Department. "With the SW1000XG and XG Works software, Yamaha has put an end to the chaos and confusion normally associated with assembling a studio by integrating all the components needed for professional-level music production into a single affordable product." The SW1000XG is currently shipping.
The synthesis section of the card features 64 voices of polyphony which can be divided among 32 timbral parts. Yamaha's Advanced Wave Memory 2 technology provides a selection of 1,267 different voices derived from 20 Megabytes of sample ROM.
Also on-board is the same expansion connector found on Yamaha's MU100 tone generator. This port allows for the quick connection of optional expansion plug-in cards that offer new synthesis technologies. Cards currently available include the PL100-VL Virtual Acoustic board, which delivers the sounds and features of Yamaha's VL70m physical modeling synthesizer.
The optional PLG100-VH Vocal Harmony Board can create up to three-part harmonies from any input signal. Complete control over pitch, gender, pan, vibrato and other parameters is provided for each individual harmony part. This allows for the quick creation of rich, expressive, natural-sounding harmonies.
By selecting from the SW1000XG's Input Presets, a stereo analog connector on the card can be used to directly connect microphones, guitars or line-level signals. Once a signal enters the SW1000XG, a high-powered, custom Yamaha DSP chip is used to shape and sculpt the sound. This custom chip translates into seven internal effects "blocks," each of which can be assigned to perform one or more independent effects from the SW1000XG's massive selection.
Available effects include everything from standards such as reverb and chorus to amp simulators, rotary speaker emulation and 70 types of "variation" effects. This powerful processing architecture allows for the production of completely finished works using only the SW1000XG card, eliminating the need for costly external effects processors.
Although the SW1000XG is shipped with XGWorks, it is also fully supported by most major sequencing packages including Steinberg's Cubase VST, Emagic's Logic Audio, The Cakewalk Company's Cakewalk Pro Audio, and Sonic Foundry's SoundForge.
