Todd Barton on BBC Sounds + Multum in Parvo Release

Excerpts of Todd Barton's performance at the Unsound Festival in Krakow is up on BBC Sounds.

"A rebroadcast of excerpts from my performance of Music and Poetry of the Kesh at the Unsound Festival in Krakow last month with a wonderful ensemble of Polish musicians. Here's the link which will be active for a month.

And the first excerpt on the broadcast is from my new solo Buchla Music Easel album, Multum in Parvo with cover art by Ursula Barton! [embed below]

Much more to come in 2019! Gigs in Belgium, NYC and Santa Barbara. New Album releases too.

Happy Holidays!
Best wishes,
Todd"

"If you’re anything like me, then one of your favourite albums of 2018 was Music and Poetry of The Kesh, released on the Freedom To Spend label. Recorded over two years in the mid-1980s, Music and Poetry of The Kesh in truth was never really designed as an ‘album’ as such. It was a cassette bundled with early editions of the legendary author Ursula K. Le Guin’s Always Coming Home novel.

The novel described the art, culture, language and ethnography of a fictional tribe of indigenous inhabitants of North California, 500 years from now. On the tape, Le Guin and her friend and collaborator, composer and sound artist Todd Barton, created a detailed, vivid musical identity for these people - the Kesh.

Listened to in 2018, the sounds of Music and Poetry of The Kesh feel simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Todd designed and built new instruments to realise the Kesh’s music, which were woven among synthesisers and field recordings from the Kesh’s native Napa Valley.

It’s a stunning, singular piece of work, but the story doesn’t end there. Anyone intrigued by Music and Poetry of the Kesh would be well advised to dig further into Todd Barton’s work, starting with Multum in Parvo - a brand new piece Todd composed using the Epoch Modular Benjolin and Buchla Music Easel.

“Don Buchla created a musical instrument that he said had no ‘preconceived ideas,’” Todd recently told the Listen to This website. “He wanted people to figure out how they wanted to interface with it. You see that with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Alessandro Cortini—they’re bringing their own voice to the palette. For my part, I’m obsessed with sound, with the ‘Buchla Paradigm.’

“His approach to synthesis, which was so different from Moog on the East coast, is immediately evident to anyone who has ever touched a Buchla instrument. If you listen to a Buchla, it will start rewiring your synapses.”

Todd honed his craft composing for acoustic instruments - string quartets, small ensembles and orchestras. In the 1970s he was drawn to emergent synthesiser technologies because of their abilities to access tones ‘between’ the standard 12 notes of the Western musical scale, and to have the power to craft music out of glitches and unique sonic gestures that are unplayable on acoustic instruments.

Multum in Parvo is reflective of this approach - it has a definite and logical flow as a composition, but its content is abstract sound sculpted out of pure energy, something only analogue synthesis can offer.

Sometimes sparse, sometimes bristling and jumping with detail, Multum... provides a genuinely multidimensional experience. Listen to it in the dark on your best headphones, you experience your brain moving slowly through a black space where an orchestra of strange, electro-microorganisms seem to swarm, murmurate and disperse, adding their distinct flutters, whispers and calls to an immersive electronic symphony.

Like the classic Forbidden Planet soundtrack, which Todd was inspired by, or indeed Music and Poetry of the Kesh - Multum in Parvo seems to function as part of some unique sonic ecology, according to its own rules, in its own universe and somewhere just beyond time.

Multum in Parvo is available on CD with artwork by the artist Ursula Barton - Todd’s daughter, named after his great friend and collaborator. It is also available on cassette with Blue Tapes artwork as ‘blue twenty-eight’.

Praise for Todd Barton:

"Multum In Parvo creates a very real imaginary place, and then it weaves that imaginary place into exactly where you are right now. I’ve listened to Multum In Parvo a dozen times or more and I’ve never heard the same album twice, because I change and my mood changes but also because incidental noises in my body and my surroundings – from sighs to car horns to distant giggles – all seem to be on very friendly terms with Todd Barton and his Buchla." - The Quietus

“Listen outdoors and the creek water you hear in Le Guin and Barton’s songs may sync up to the muddy river you’re passing; listen during a city’s winter and the percussive rhythm and bell-like tones will commune with your apartment radiator. These are sounds that seek to speak from then and beyond, to right now.” - Pitchfork

New Cogito Cartesian Sequencer for Audulus

"Using Audulus for audio processing and pushing the iPhone to its ultimate limit, Audulus user Bimini Road has created Cogito, a Cartesian Sequencer. Building on the work of other talented Audulus users--JDRaoul, afta8, and jjthrash, --- the patch is worked out and explained in detail on the Audulus Forum.

The Cogito Sequener’s user interface is enabled by the Custom Nodes upgrade, an Audulus feature which allows custom-designed user interfaces.

Audulus is a minimalist modular software synthesizer and effects processor. With Audulus, users can build synthesizers, design new sounds, or process audio. All with low latency real-time processing suitable for live performance.

Audulus for iOS is available on the App Store for $14.99. An iPhone 4s or iPad 2 is required.

Audulus for Mac is available on the Mac App Store for $29.99. Mid 2010 or later Mac is required.

Audulus for Windows is available directly through audulus.com for $29.99. Buy now and receive ALL in-app upgrades FREE. That’s $45 worth of upgrades.

For more information, visit audulus.com."

The following are some details on the sequencer captured from the Audulus forum. Impressive.

"Ok, so here it is - the first (somewhat buggy) draft of Cogito, my Cartesian Sequencer - so called because...well, you'll see. I pushed the iPhone to its absolute limit with this one. It only takes up - ONLY, haha - 30% of the CPU, but I can *barely* get it to work with a synth beefier than 1 OSC node, 1 ADSR, 1 delay, and 1 reverb. It's official - I need to get a new Mac if I really want to pursue my Audulus dreams.

First, thanks are in order:

Wurlitzer Analog Swingin' Rhythm Drum Machine 5020

via this auction
SN E210732
"Wurlitzer Model 5020 Analog Drum Machine. Electronic Swingin' Rhythm, Model 5020. I'd say this is probably early 1970's. Great vintage sound. Trigger (or play) the kit yourself with depression buttons for bass, brush, snare (roll), block, and cymbal.

If you've played one of these before, I don't need to describe the simple pleasure of playing a really complicated beat on four or five fingers and having your other hand free as well as your feet for bass and lead parts. The built in loops are pretty standard for the era of organ accessory drum machines: Waltz, Latin, Foxtrot, Teen, & March.

You can double and triple up the loops as well as adjust tempo, and also add your own embellishments with the five individual drums that you can trigger. The light on the left is power, the light on the right flashes in time with your preset tempo.

This isn't a super easy drum machine to find, both in terms of general scarcity and because if you have one, you're playing it. Fresh from a local estate. It's about 4" tall, 7-1/2" wide and 9" deep. It is unique and different from the Roland, Univox, Maestro, Korg or other combo organ analog drum machines you'll find around.

It is a mono unit, single RCA output as well as an auxiliary input, and an external control that must be organ driven via single RCA. Great old drum machine with a great sound. Someone else wrote on Ebay awhile back but 'The subtle uniqueness of this machine truly stands out in a mix, and that is why rappers, hip-hop artists, and circuit-benders seek them out. Uniqueness is in and it can bend!'"

Het Concreet Scanner 2023

video upload by

"In November 2023, I joined the team at Het Concreet in Tilburg, The Netherlands for a week long residency.

Het Concreet is a Dutch sound collective dedicated to finding new sounds by experimenting with analog electronic devices, magnetic tape and acoustics. Their analogue ambitions are rooted in their studio space, where they seek to find new meanings of sound by working with techniques that have become largely obsolete in today’s world. Their main instrument is magnetic tape, so I collaborated with my own analogue gear.

Radio Concrète was a a 12-hour broadcasting marathon that explored radio as a compositional tool and included contributions from Margherita Brillada, Veerle Pennock, Clara Byom, Bas van Druten, Nele Möller, Marieke van de Ven, Sharon Stewart, and was hosted by Steph Byrne.

During my stay, I fell in love with the Elektor Formant, a vintage Dutch synth handmade by Jos van Ras. In addition I used my SOMA Ether, Lore Mill Keyed Mosstone and Make Noise Strega synth. At the end of the broadcast, I made an intimate performance for a live and dedicated audience in collaboration with Het Concreet. This is an excerpt from that show."

natural park #2 / ambient mutable instrument in the wild

video upload by Tom Leclerc

"EN//
The Residence - The Tale of Silence - in Auvergne, France is a collaboration between photographer Joséphine Leroux and artist/musician Tom Leclerc. Capturing suspended moments of life, composition, exploration, and optimism lie at the heart of this journey of writing and documenting Tom's upcoming album. This album is the creation of a genuine natural park that can be listened to, where details, microcosms, and sonic curiosities blend in a unique acoustic ballad.

The challenge today is to offer a new, friendly, inspiring, and curiosity-inducing imagination for the delicate and bucolic nature. With this collaboration, it is also a genuine artistic exploration of the narrative of tomorrow and tranquility.

Armed with his experience with the Moss Explorer collective, Tom Leclerc is accustomed to the mountains and their inspiring secrets, which lead him to discover new forms of art production and dissemination in nature. Composing with nature is not an easy task; one must learn to let go.

In the age of capitalist anxiety, the search for tranquility becomes a difficult endeavor. And when we finally find it, we are already thinking of finding it again. In these places, the natural and ephemeral orchestra is alive; it can invite us to compose with it. I seek to bear witness to these moments to offer the world these new imaginaries.

And there are those moments, at the turn of a mountain's contour, where sound comes to life and offers us a true tale of silence.

Moogfest Announces Protest Stage in Response to HB2/Travel Ban

via Moogfest

"Once again, we are stunned by discriminatory politics in our beloved home of North Carolina and across the U.S.

Last March, North Carolina state legislature passed House Bill 2, a law that enables discrimination across gender, sexual orientation, and class. Specifically, the law eliminated past protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, stripped local government control over minimum wage, removed the right to sue for discrimination at the state level, restricted city councils ability to protect local residents from discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation, and barred transgender people from using bathrooms that do not match the gender they were born with.

Moogfest 2016 .: Day 2

Published on May 21, 2016 Moogfest

Moogfest took an immediate stand against the law, reaffirmed our commitment to protest inequality, and offered a safe space for all artists, fans, and visitors who attended. This past December, despite the ongoing work of our community and our allies, lawmakers failed to repeal the law.

Now, as we prepare for the 2017 festival, we are faced with new and mounting concerns. Lawmakers in Texas and Kansas have taken steps toward enacting laws similar to HB2. And in his first few days in office, the 45th president has taken actions, such as the travel ban, that threaten our foundational beliefs and intimidate members of our diverse global network of thinkers and makers. But we are not afraid. We are not hateful. We are alive in our mission to bring the dream of a more equal society to all humans. We seek out facts, respect evidence-based science, and welcome a wide-open worldview. We believe this base of knowledge powers creativity, imagination, and innovation.

We stand with the millions who marched on January 21st in cities around the world for the rights of women. We fiercely support the march’s mission of standing “together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.” We also stand with those who have been continuing to protest over the last few weeks. The intersectionality of those participating in these protests makes it clear that we cannot turn inwards, and we cannot exist solely for the individual. As said by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. while behind bars for protesting in Birmingham, AL, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

We are inspired by this movement and the spirit of those that came before it. The fight against inequality echoes our own mission to design radical instruments for change and reflects the legacy of Bob Moog, the inspiration behind Moog who believed that true innovation comes through collaboration, not exclusion. Moogfest is transformed, by the urgency of our times, and we invite you to keep marching with us into the future.

• Write to North Carolina politicians to share your love for the people of our state and your strong opposition to HB2 and other discriminatory laws. You can write your own or use this form from Equality NC or this form from Democracy.io.

• Support the work of our allies at the ACLU of North Carolina and in other states around the country.

• Join us at Moogfest 2017 and attend the Protest Stage, a dedicated space for resistance. As one of our key themes this year, Protest will also be brought to life through workshops, installations, conversations, and masterclasses. We will stand in full accord with artists from various communities to collectively celebrate inclusivity and elevate the fight against discrimination here in North Carolina and across the world.

Participating artists on the Protest Stage will be announced soon in our weekly newsletter, Future Thought Future Sound. Sign up here.

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens) Uses MIDI Sprout

Published on May 8, 2016 MIDI Sprout

"Excerpt of an interview and performance with Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe from his residency at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, California"

"DATA GARDEN RELEASES 60 MIDI Sprouts FOR SALE ON MAY 22nd AT NOON EST

The arts collective Data Garden is announcing another sale of their highly anticipated MIDI Sprout device that allows people to generate electronic music from their houseplants. Two years after their successful Kickstarter campaign, the collective is making 60 of these rare devices available for purchase to the general public on May 22nd at Noon EST.

'We’ve received a steady flow of interest from people who missed our Kickstarter and want to buy a MIDI Sprout,' says Joe Patitucci, artist and founder of Data Garden. 'While we are open to partnering with hardware manufacturers to make more, we currently have no plans to do so. With only 60 units available and more than 900 people on our waiting list, this is an important time to act in order to buy one as soon as the sale goes live.'

Interested people can go to www.MIDISprout.com to signup for email updates as the sale approaches. The collective will launch an internet pop-up shop at the end of the month during Moogfest in North Carolina, where they will be leading plant music meditation and composition workshops.

'This is a really exciting time for us,' muses Jon Shapiro, Data Garden performer and practitioner. 'I’ve met such wonderful people performing and doing installations with MIDI Sprout over the past two years. We would connect deeply on how this device can change people’s personal and artistic lives. I always felt a twinge of remorse when they would ask how to buy one and I didn’t have a concrete answer. Though the amount we can offer is disproportionate to the large demand, this is a wonderful step forward.'

The musical collaborations that Shapiro is referring to have included musicians like Laraaji, Greg Fox, Lichens, King Britt and Bryce Hackford. Meanwhile, Patitucci continues to exhibit his sound sculptures while leading group meditations and furthering his listening practice under guidance from Pauline Oliveros. Sam Cusumano, the engineering mind behind the MIDI Sprout is working on an upcoming collaboration with John Zorn.

About Data Garden
Data Garden creates experiences through music and technology. We seek to connect people and nature in new ways.

Begun as a record label releasing downloadable album codes printed on plantable seed paper, Data Garden has become a worldwide public art project building community and connection to living plants through art."

Update via Samuel Cusumano in the comments: "Get detailed information about the MIDI Sprout, code, schematics, board designs, and instruction at support.midisprout.com! I'm always happy to discuss the technology. Understand how your tools work!"

Top 20 Wierdest Instruments On Sonic State

"Voting starts today as we countdown towards our next IPTV series, the Top 20 Weirdest Instruments. And it's not just synths - you can vote for acoustic instruments, outboard effects, circuit bendery, software, even toys - in fact anything that makes a sound and is truly strange will be considered for the shortlist.

Sonicstate.com has featured lots of strange instruments in news stories and videos from NAMM and MESSE, as well as frequent visits to Jack Waterson's Future Music shop in LA. So what is the attraction of weird technology? "Everyone is fascinated by odd-looking gear that makes weird and wonderful noises," says Simon Power who produced the recently broadcast 'Top 20 Greatest Synths' IPTV series, "when you hear something new and different on a recording it really makes you sit up and listen. We'll be featuring some very leftfield gear in this show. And now that it's possible to emulate lots of these sounds, I think it's interesting to see the hardware origins. Hopefully the programme will inspire the viewers to seek out some of these amazing instruments."

The series will feature more exclusive interviews with producers, musicians and users as well as instrument demos and film footage. "This series is less chart-based than 'Top 20 Greatest Synths'. It will have a different feel to it with a lot of emphisis on the instruments," says Power. "We've already lined up some interviews that I'm really excited about. I can't wait to get started. It's great fun putting these series together for Sonic."

"We always try to push the boundaries a bit, but we were really surprised by the popularity of the show, adds series cameraman and Sonicstate co-founder Andy McCreeth. "It was interesting to see how passionate some of the chatroom discussions about chart positions were too We'll be interviewing more musicians, producers, and hopefully some of the inventors behind some truly oddball instruments - I'm really looking forward to it."

As usual the shows will be presented by 'Professor Marc Norris' who's eccentric comments and links became a feature of the recent Top 20 Synths series. But how did he get involved with Sonic State? "Those fine fellows at Sonic found me on YouTube drifting around in Cyberspace," said the Professor (AKA actor and comedian Marc Norris), "I've always had a great passion for electronic music and I was very excited about being asked to present the show."

The Top 20 Greatest Synths links were recorded at the Sonic offices in a single day as Marc was due back on stage for an evening performance. "It was all a bit of a rush, but I had great fun working with Simon and Andy. We had a script but we sometimes just wandered off to see where it would take us."

And what can we expect from the professor in the new series? "I think we'll be seeing more facets of the professor's twisted personality. He's a great character to play with, but leaving him behind at the studio is becoming more and more of a struggle for me!"

The weird instruments to be included will be decided by a combination of voting and the choices of the people interviewed. There will also be suggestions from the Sonic staff and a few unexpected surprises thrown in for entertainment value!

So vote now for your top 3 weirdest instruments of all time, and remember, it's your vote that counts!

Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s SN 7885

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Analogue Solutions Leipzig-s synthesizer is a two-oscillator monophonic fully-analog MIDI synthesizer. Its signal path is not only analog, but so are its control functions... envelope, LFO, etc. Because it is a fully-analog synthesizer with circuit designs based on vintage analog synthesizers, it evinces the tone that is what you seek when you're looking for vintage analog sound.

In addition to amazing and fat tone, the Leipzig-s has a great set of functionality. The oscillators have independent glide and independent pulse-width modulation. There is a sub oscillator that can be generated by either oscillator. The filter is a 24db per octave low pass that seems like it was deeply inspired by Moog, and generates one of the thickest, richest filter tones in modern analog synthesizers. The filter can be controlled with either of the two envelopes. The modulation section is complex and allows each oscillator to be modulated by a number of sources, including different waveforms from the LFO, envelopes, the other oscillator, and MIDI. The filter can also be modulated by these sources, allowing a level of complexity that is very useful. Especially for creating drum sounds.

The Leipzig-s also has an analog sequencer that can be MIDI controlled. If you want true vintage analog sequencing sounds with an analog synthesizer, this is a quick and inexpensive way to get them! The sequencer is single-channel, but allows you to control the oscillators in independent amounts. The sequencer can also control the filter."
