"I finally built the Roland JD-990 editor of my dreams – and it's open source.

SoundDiver is dead, Patch Base never felt right, and the JD-990's front panel only lets you scratch the surface of what this 90s synth can really do. So I built my own editor: a native Mac app (made with JUCE) that puts every parameter at your fingertips – touchable envelopes, a full effects page, a library editor and a performance view for stacking up to 24 voices across multiple MIDI channels.

My philosophy: the editor is the source of truth. Your patches live on your computer – with version control and proper backups – instead of on a 30-year-old battery.

The three areas control three oscillators respectively. Pressing them will increase the pitch, change the timbre, and speed up the rhythm. There is also a touch point on the back that will interfere with the output and produce noise. A clip can be attached to the back to wear it on clothes or bags. ROBOTRON is a MIDI controller that looks and feel like an analog synthesizer! It is hand made in France, with the highest quality material, it's very robust and durable, like the vintage machines that made history. Robotron has 26 potentiometers and 6 momentary switches. They are all assignable to any CC you desire. By default the layout of ROBOTRON gives you the essential commands of pretty much every synths that exist.

Robotron comes with a Max for Live plugin that allows you to map your virtual synths on the fly and save the mappings once and for all. You can download it here. A VST version of the plugin is coming in 2024.

Robotron has 9 sections. Oscillators, mixer, filter, 2 enveloppes, a volume, LFO, a MIDI channel selector and the free to assign knobs. Every knobs and buttons are assignable.
It works on all DAWs.

With its 16 MIDI channel selection directly available on its panel, you can quickly switch from one instrument to another, without touching your DAW. You can also control all your hardware synths using the MIDI OUT of your computer.
For those who work without no computer, a very small USB to MIDI DIN converter is coming in 2024 and will be included with Robotron at no extra charge. When you order now you'll receive your converter as soon as it's available.

The assign section has 6 aluminium knobs, the same found on Sequential Circuit synthesizers. The other knobs are made of Bakelite, an extremely solid plastic invented by Leo Baekeland in 1907. Bakelite can resist extreme temperatures and chemicals. Those knobs are the same found on Moog synths.
The top panel is made of anodised aluminium with a beautiful brushing effect to it. The wood sides are made of exotic Sapelli, often used on boats for its robustness and beautiful look. It is particularly prized for its lustrous iridescence. It is also used in the manufacture of furniture, luxury flooring, and musical instruments.

"A short demo of my 'Macumbista' sound box. Built at a workshop in London with sound artist, Derek Holzer a few years ago. It is a simple amplifier circuit with a speaker. The spring has a contact mic attached to it and it generates feedback when it's placed on the speaker. The touch points connect to various parts of the circuit so you can circuit bend it with your hands."

"Michel Waisvisz designed and built the very first Crackle circuit in the late 60ties together with Geert Hamelberg. This was simply a wooden frame with some print boards mounted rear-side up to be touched by the fingers. The circuits were ‘malformed’ oscillators that were very unstable and highly sensitive for finger connections. The Crackle circuit, as well as the powered speaker box, were battery powered to avoid hum and repeated exposure to dangerous electrical shocks. In 1973 Michel Waisvisz joined STEIM and started working on more touchable electronic instruments together with Peter Beyls, Nico Bes and Johan den Biggelaar, and by the mid-seventies they had created both the ‘Crackle Synth’ and the ‘Crackle Box’.

The Magnetic Fields recently used one in their album Love at the Bottom of the Sea. Swedish percussionist Sven-Åke Johansson carries one often and uses it frequently in recordings and improvisation. Mazen Kerbaj tours with one of the original Crackle synthesizers.

I used this once and it's been in the box since 2012. I have the pin that keeps the box closed in a baggie in the box. Get it, it's a cool little device."

'Welcome to the world of Crackle.

Michel Waisvisz designed and built the very first Crackle circuit in the late 60ties together with Geert Hamelberg. This was simply a wooden frame with some print boards mounted rear-side up to be touched by the fingers. The circuits were ‘malformed’ oscillators that were very unstable and highly sensitive for finger connections. The Crackle circuit, as well as the powered speaker box, were battery powered to avoid hum and repeated exposure to dangerous electrical shocks. In 1973 Michel Waisvisz joined STEIM and started working on more touchable electronic instruments together with Peter Beyls, Nico Bes and Johan den Biggelaar, and by the mid-seventies they had created both the ‘Crackle Synth’ and the ‘Crackle Box’...'

I bought this item from STEIM in 2005 when I was in a band, doing this kind of stuff. I'm not anymore but I do need cash to pay the rent, so I'm going to let this delightful and crazy machine go to someone who'll use it for what it's meant for, which is making weird electronic music.

The cracklebox is a beautiful thing. The wooden case feels amazing in the hand, and this example, mine, is in perfect nick. I treasured it and kept it safe from knocks or scratches. The playing surface is so tactical. Anyone who sees it, has to touch it. And anyone who touches it, smiles when they do as it responds to every nuance of movement. Now, I used to mic this up and run it through an ableton channel - I've seen folks add an audio out for a 100% wet line, I always meant to do that but never did, it worked just fine in the air - this cracklebox is 100% original and unmodded. It's lovely the way it's meant to be.

It's also 100% functional. It takes a little learning what that means; the cracklebox is a strange beast, but she'll reward your investment and give you back more than you give.

If you're looking for a way to set yourself apart, then this box will turn heads wherever and however you play it."
