Exploring the Serge Modular Stereo VCFQ #sergemodular #eurorack #modularsynth
video upload by The Machines Won
"Exploring the legendary VCFQ filter in stereo!! It's a perfect filter to pair with the medusa. I hope you enjoy listening to these patches as much as I enjoyed making them.
There are some jams at the end if you want to hear more musical applications with the filter. A few pinging sections of course, some pads, ambient, industrial and synth wavey goodness.
Lots to explore with this versatile filter, now made better in Stereo!"

Rare Vintage KORG KEIO (?) CHECKMATE Drum Machine
Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this Reverb listing
This appears to be the first one to be featured on the site. It looks a bit like the Wexler ROCKMATE. Teisco made a CHECKMATE keyboard. You can fhand a handful of posts mentioning CHECKMATE here.
Details via the listing:
"A vintage Checkmate drum machine, a true gem from the early days of rhythm boxes. This unit is as much a visual statement as it is a piece of music history: with its golden front panel and large knobs, it’s a guaranteed eye-catcher in any studio or collection.
Fully serviced: all electrolytic capacitors have been replaced, ensuring reliable operation.
Everything works as it should – all rhythms, switches, and controls have been tested.
Runs on a single 9V battery inside the unit, making it portable and hassle-free.
About the Checkmate
The Checkmate belongs to the family of early preset rhythm machines from the late 1960s/early 1970s, often linked with Korg’s DoncaMatic line. These units were designed for accompaniment but quickly became collectible for their quirky analog character and stunning design.
Limited but charming selection of preset rhythms.
Simple analog sound circuitry with a warm, nostalgic tone.
Rarely seen today, making it highly desirable for collectors of vintage drum machines.
Why You’ll Love It
While it won’t replace a modern drum computer in terms of versatility, the Checkmate delivers something unique:
A rare piece of music history that shaped the early years of electronic rhythm.
Unmatched aesthetics – the gold panel and oversized knobs look fantastic both in use and as a display piece.
Collector’s must-have – these machines are increasingly hard to find in good working order.
If you’re a vintage synth/drum machine enthusiast, this is a rare opportunity to own a serviced and working Checkmate drum machine. Perfect as a collector’s item, studio conversation piece, or source of authentic retro rhythms."

OXI Instruments Introduces Split 2 and Split 2hp
video upload by OXI Instruments
"Today we’re looking at the brand new OXI Split 2 and Split 2hp — two tiny but powerful tools that make it easier than ever to connect your OXI One to all your instruments.
We’ll walk you through what’s new, how they work, and why they might be the missing piece in your setup."
"The OXI Split 2, MIDI breakout box, is an efficient and inexpensive solution for users whose setup relies on MIDI connections. It is the easiest way to connect several MIDI devices, such as synths or drum machines, to the OXI One.
The Split provides:
2x MIDI DIN Out
4x MIDI TRS Outs
Select Between MIDI Out or MIDI Thru
It increases data transfer capacity and the number of MIDI channels up to 96.
To use it, simply connect the Split to the OXI One with the TRS cable included.
OXI Split 2 works for OXI One and OXI One MKII. But it doesn’t work when connected to other MIDI devices."

06.06.2025 Radio Aktivitaet for fun - Take 1
video upload by batchas
"Can't of course beat the original masterpiece by Kraftwerk, but it won't stop me to have some fun playing with all these beautiful machines.
I record only one take, to not spend too much time on settings and fine tuning.
If I had to record a second time, I'd finish the track differently.
I'll prob. do next a video to show the different audio sources / MIDI tracks before moving forward to another tune. For now here's how the differents elements arrive:
00:00 Mellotron
00:12 TR-808
00:18 Minimoog
00:26 Waldorf Q
00:35 Mos-Lab 2500 (oscillator 2 on filter 1)
01:08 Mos-Lab 2500 (white noise on filter 2)
01:10 Roland Juno 60
Effect: Audiothingies Doctor A"

05.27.2025 Supernature for fun (Long version) - Take 1
video upload by batchas
Take 2 here
"I hesitated to make this one public because of all 'thumb down' enthusiasts, but no matter how, music is my therapy and it won't stop me having fun with my machines, without any stylistic boundaries.
Pretty sure I'll record one more take of this one, cause it's far to be perfect and it's a lot of fun to play. I was 14 in 1977 when the Cerrone 'Supernature' video clip came on TV. We had never seen something like this on french TV back then and as a kid I was pretty much impressed.
As usual, one take, no editing, recorded directly to stereo out.
The MIDI tracks play muSonics Minimoog, Roland Juno 60, TR-808, Waldorf Q, Waldorf Pulse+, Oberheim Matrix 1000 and one plugin, the Mellotron. Effect = Audiothingies Doctor A.
It's quite a long version cause I did loop the last measure and could not stop playing!"

Wendy Carlos: Electronic Music's Transformative Pioneer
video upload by Resident Advisor
"'The word "pioneer' gets thrown around too liberally these days. But in the case of Wendy Carlos, the glove fits. The face of electronic music would look immeasurably different in 2025 without the American trans composer's groundbreaking achievements. Before she came along, electronic music was barely considered music at all—just "funny sounds," as Bob Moog once said.
That all changed in 1968. Produced in collaboration with Rachel Elkind, Carlos's debut album, Switched-On Bach wielded machines to produce sounds that could compete with the symphonic pop and rock of the era. The landmark LP won multiple GRAMMYs, played a key role in popularising the use of synths and became only the second classical music record to sell a million copies.
In our latest video essay, written by Sasha Geffen, we trace Carlos's story from her early experiments with Moog through to her impact on key electronic acts of the past 50 years, including Brian Eno, DJ Sprinkles and Octo Octa.

The SCREAMING Filter: How Herman Gillis Created the Sherman Filterbank
video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music
"Meet Herman Gillis, the inventor of the Sherman Filterbank, one of the most aggressive and unique filters in electronic music history! In this exclusive interview, Herman reveals how he employed Switched-Capacitor Filter (SCF) technology to create an analog powerhouse that shaped the sound of artists like The Orb, David Bowie, Human League, Ziggy Marley, and more...
What makes the Sherman Filterbank so special? Herman takes us through the evolution of his designs, from his teenage years building guitar pedals and drum machines to his legendary Filterbank 1, Quad Modular Filter, Filterbank Compact, and the latest 500 series module, the Rodec/Sherman Minirestyler.
I’ll be performing on a Minimoog and laying down grooves with a TR-909 drum machine throughout the video—bringing Herman’s filter madness to life with some face-melting musical examples! You won’t just hear us talk about this screaming filter—you’ll experience it in all its glorious, growling, and gut-punching sound!
If you’re into synths, sound design, and legendary instruments, this deep dive into one of the most extreme filters ever built is a must-watch!"

Metasonix Penile Amputator vs. X0XB0X
video upload by fishjaco
"An 'uncut' 17 min take of messing around with the new Metasonix box for you to suffer through. Sorry not sorry. XOXO"
via Metasonix
"What is it? It’s a bad thing. Tube distortion pushed too damn far.
It’s the SMALLEST product we have ever made. Shirt pocket size. Inside is a preamp with feedback controls, using two 5702 subminiature pentodes. They are real Raytheon military surplus from the 1980s, not Soviet leftovers. The quality is aces.
ONE knob. The knob controls the feedback and gain. Fully CCW is off. Turn it up about 10% and you get increasingly LOUD signal, sliding into heavy tube distortion. Keep going up and it bursts into VERY LOUD oscillation. That’s the “feature”.
The switch is the other “feature”. It applies feedback to the suppressor grid of the second tube. What does that mean? We don’t know, we’ve never done this before and neither has anyone else. It is “unique” but you get to decide if it is useful or not.
There is a CV input on the front, it basically turns the Amputator into a really awful voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA). Ideally you shouod put at least 0-10 volts into this input. Can’t damage anything because it’s an all-tube circuit and there are no transistors or chips. The output is NOT able to drive “any load” so only feed it into a HIGH impedance unbalanced input.
It’s in a transparent polycarbonate enclosure because we STILL get stupid attacks from fools claiming that there are either no tubes in our products, or else the tubes do nothing and it’s all done with a “ten cent chip”. Fuck you, buttboys.
Here’s the damn photo. No, it does not have a 'bypass switch'. It’s on all the time because you deserve it.
Power required is 12 volts dc, 2.1mm barrel plug, center positive. 700 milliamps on startup and 250 milliamps in normal operation. NOTE: the standard version includes an AC power adapter for 100v-120v countries ONLY. If you are in a 220v-240v country, a “universal” power adapter is available for $20 more. Sorry kids: inflation and supply problems.
Everything sucks. That’s why each Amputator has different offensive stickers on it.
Video demos with drum machines: one, two.
I would put insults of guitar players here, but it’s pointless, they won’t read it. Some of them can’t read at all. Did I ever tell you about my ongoing battle with the IRS over my 2023 estimated tax payments? It’s an ugly little story and most people don’t believe the IRS is that incompetent. Well, they are.
Size: no idea. Small. Weight: a few ounces.
Any more stupid questions?"

Tim Exile's Scapeshift - The Generative Groove Box That DOESN'T Use AI
video uploads by Tim Exile
Tim Exile's New Generative Music "Instrument" is Insane
video upload by mylarmelodies
"This is a first look at Scapeshift, a new Reaktor 6 ensemble from Tim Exile - it produces music & sounds generatively (ie: not AI), which you can control as little or much as you want. I'll introduce it, then I'll just jam it.
BTW - this is running on a Mac Mini M1 Late 2020 (the base power M1). The Reaktor CPU indicator is declaring 37% on this, it's quite intensive! I've only tried to run this standalone. Tim gave me a copy of Scapeshift to see what I thought, I decided to make this video to show you it. Tim's had a hell of a year with cancer, bereavement and bankruptcy following the end of the brilliant Endlesss.

CHAPTERS
00:00 Explaining the Idea
6:57 The Sequencer
9:13 Jamming Scapeshift Live
20:20 Oh!

Scapeshift is a generative groovebox and sequencer. I started building it in a hospital bed as a tool to soundtrack videos. I was documenting my recovery from major cancer surgery and I wanted a tool that would be fast and flexible and output ready-mixed music.
But I’ve ended up using it for way more than that. It’s become an inspiration machine that can take me all the way to a finished track. I’ve already written and released a full EP with it. Right now I’m listening to it in Wander mode, getting my mind melted as it weaves through continuous variations.
At its heart, it’s a machine designed for evolving, morphing and cross-pollinating rhythms, melodies and textures. The results can stand alone as finished tracks or be used to complement a production in your DAW or DAWless setup. Unlike your DAW, which reads out static sequence data, everything Scapeshift generates is controlled by continuously adjustable parameters. It can do some cool things your DAW can’t. You can morph continually between two completely different patterns, cross-breed multiple patterns or create themes to generate infinite variations on a style. It comes with 12 themes which get you started with one click. It can feel a bit like using AI, but unlike AI you can then precisely tweak the parameters of what it generates and make it your own. And it does all of this without using gigawatts of power and stolen data.
It’s got a full suite of sound engines: 5 drum synths, two monosynths, a polysynth, a resonator, a noise generator and FX. It’s also got a multiband mixing and mastering section so it outputs audio that’s ready to go wherever you want your music to go.
Scapeshift is available from my Patreon store for $59 + tax.
You get a 50% discount if you support my “Adventurer” tier. Scapeshift is my first step on an exploration into building and interacting with a new type of musical system. It's an ongoing adventure which I would love you to join me on.
I’m also rebuilding after a rough year. What I yearn for more than anything is some stability. Your ongoing support will be a huge help towards a sustainable recovery for me and my family. I want to build a village of curious players, makers and tinkerers and I would love for you to come with me on this adventure.
You’ll need a license for Native Instruments Reaktor to run Scapeshift without limitations. If you have Native Instruments’ Komplete bundle you will have this already. You can run Scapeshift in the free Reaktor Player but it will time out after 30 minutes and you won’t be able to save your work.
In terms of system requirements, the more recent your system the better. Scapeshift takes ~35% of a single core of my M2 Max Macbook Pro and ~70% of one core of my 2016 Intel Macbook Pro. A buffer size of at least 512 samples is recommended as Scapeshift does a lot of realtime event processing. This can cause clicks at lower buffer sizes. It’s recommended to run Scapeshift in Reaktor standalone. Most people have had success running it as a VST or AU plugin inside a DAW but some people have reported difficulties on older machines."

Machina Bristronica 2024
video uploads by sonicstate
Playlist:
1. Bristronica 24: MyVolts The Silent Alchemist Nears Shipping
We caught up with Caroline who gave us the latest update to the *Silent Alchemist*, a versatile power hub designed for musicians. Featuring five isolated USB-C outputs and a high-wattage sixth output capable of delivering 100 watts, the device can power a Mac with the remaining outputs providing 20 watts each. Its independent circuits ensure noise-free operation, catering to a variety of devices including the Dreadbox module and Sysmo slope generator.2. Bristronica 24: Circuit Happy ML2M Clock Sync module updates
The Silent Alchemist uses innovative step-up power tips to convert USB-C input to the correct voltage for various devices. There's also new feature: an uninterruptible power supply allowing seamless transition between wall and power bank sources. Also introduced were updated cables, such as silver candy cords and floating ring TRS to TS cables, expanding connection flexibility. The Silent Alchemist is expected to be available in December with a competitive pricing strategy.
More Info:
https://myvolts.com/
At Bristronica 2024, we caught up with the creator of the *ML2M*, who introduced us to the latest version. The ML2M is a compact Eurorack module with Wi-Fi capabilities, allowing seamless synchronization with Ableton Live, Bitwig Studio, and iOS music apps using Ableton Link without the need for cables. It either connects to an existing network or creates its own, ensuring robust sync even in environments with unreliable Wi-Fi. The module, which retains its 2HP size, now features MIDI integration through TRS jacks. Users can access a web interface to configure each output for different clock divisions and reset triggers, making setup straightforward and flexible.3. Bristronica 24: Archaea Exchange Patching Module
Alongside the ML2M, there's also the Missing Link Junior. This desktop version offers the same functionality but in a box format, complete with MIDI and CV clock outputs. Both products are now accessible, with a starting price of $250.
At Machina Bristronica 2024, we caught up with Arran from @archaea_modular_synthesis who presented the *Exchange Module*. This programmable patcher, a year in the making, evolved from its early prototype stage to a fully functional module. Arran explained how the Exchange can route synth voices via a beam controller and three exchange modules installed within the skiff, allowing for versatile patching. Operating like a matrix patchbay, it enables users to select inputs and outputs with the push of a button, create presets, and chain multiple modules for synchronized patching.
Communication between the modules occurs over the Eurorack power bus as well as over MIDI via the USB-C connection. The Exchange maintains analog integrity, ensuring there’s no conversion latency. The forthcoming release expected in late November 2024, includes a USB-driven editor for enhanced control capabilities.

The polyrhythmic clocks and Euclidean sequencer of the Modor DR-2
video upload by Richard DeHove
"Euclidean sequencers are fun, but nowhere near as much fun as polyrhythmic clocks. Turns out every track on the Modor DR-2 has three clocks. Here I demonstrate some very tame examples sticking mainly to time signatures that won't disrupt the metabolism. Truly strange options abound, the vast majority of which could turn any simple pattern into a jazzified moosh worthy of an opening night of free-form interpretive dance at a modern art gallery.
If my examples here aren't too horrendous I may have another go at some more challenging. For example, mismatched time signatures partially sticjed back together with delicately timed flams and tuplets.
Also demoed here is the Euclidean sequencer. This is a more common feature of many drum machines. What makes this one a little different is that you can have up to 64 steps and hits in each track.

The "slot machine" method of random writing with the DB-01

"Slot machines (AKA pokies and speilautomat) supposedly get a lot of their appeal through the fast cycle of anticipation and reward. And if you don't get the reward you wanted then you can instantly run the cycle again. Wins are reinforced by pretty lights and little tunes.
Well, that sounds a lot like small-chunk randomization with the DB-01: Quick randomizations of a few steps and with instant rewards. Except you won't be broke at the end.
I'm always trying to find fun ways to write patterns and this method is, imo, one of the best. Although it's specific to the DB-01 you could just as easily take a MIDI-Out feed and power other machines.
I also think it's very interesting to see the actual process people use to write patterns. If you've got a favorite method please share it in the comments.

Seuential Circuits TOM with Tauntek TOM16 extansion
video upload by ohm_studi_ohm
"The Sequential TOM was already a great drum machine at the time it was released, with a lot of nice features, especially regarding MIDI implementation. You could play, record, synchronise the machine over MIDI and adjust sample direction, volume, pitch and pan of every sample either on the device or over MIDI, in real time and for every step ! That gives you lots of possible variations. Not many drum machines could could achive that at the time.
And now thanx to another amazing engineering by Tauntek you can have 16 kits in the instrument at all time, without the need to switch cartridges. And even more important: you can swap the internal kit samples as well as the cartridge ones, enabling for any combination of 2 kits you wish. This is impossible with cartridges or other upgrade available, and only possible thanx to Tauntek firmware. And that makes a huge difference. Note that you can only have 15 sounds at hand not 16. The 8th pad from the cartridge layer is always a trigger out message and won't trigger a sound, even if the loade kit has 8 sounds.
You can even make your own kits if you have access to an Eprom programmer.
Check Tauntek dedicated page for more info (http://www.tauntek.com/TOM16cart.htm)
This unit also had its RAM maxed out, expanding the internal 8k to 32k and thus bringing the stock 2,300 notes capacity to a whopping 10,400. And believe me you run very quickly out of memory if you make some complex patterns with different variations.
So here is the demo, i didn't make patterns demos for each of the 16 kits but you'll get the idea, and I didn't go too deep into external MIDI playing/programming but bare in mind you can record instrument tuning pitch, volume, pan and sample direction (reverse) for every instrument on every step.
Here is the timeline:
00:00 stock kit patterns
02:28 TR808 kit patterns
03:56 TR909 kit patterns
05:08 TR606 kit patterns
06:25 CR78 kit patterns

[demo] Old-School Poly Sounds (Quantum/Iridium)
video upload by Synthesizer Video Service
"These are all 100 patches from my new Waldorf Quantum and Iridium sound bank in one go. This package is called 'Classic Poly Layers' and it contains pure VA sounds ('Waveform' oscillator model) for these awesome machines. Of course, all patches use mod-wheel and aftertouch.
The best: these patches are perfect for layering. Just put two of these sounds on both layers of the Quantum or Iridium to create a fat and complex sound. This way, you can create 10,000 (100 x 100) new and exciting combinations!
I modeled these sounds after a well-known synth from around 1980, but I won't say which one to dodge criticism. But maybe you can guess which one it is. It would make me happy in any case. Feel free to post your guess in the comments!
Here you get a continuous mix of all patches, recorded directly onto three DAW tracks, without additional hardware or software effect processing - just pure Quantum MK1 (only internal effects)!
Get these sounds in the shop (EU only): https://www.frequture.net/shop/"

Dewanatron machines and the Swarmatron
video upload by Robotussin Vintage Synths
"Here's the Swarmatron and its creators Brian and Leon Dewan, talking to Detroit Public TV about 10 years ago.
I posted about the Swarmatron about a year ago. It's an analogue synth that creates a tone using eight oscillators all playing slightly different frequencies. The pitch is controlled with a ribbon at the front. The difference between the 8 oscillators is controlled with a span control, from tightly aligned to woozily detuned. It's designed to produce a sort of cacophony, almost like multiple voices singing at once.
It's best known for its use by Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor on their soundtrack to "The Social Network", which won an Oscar and changed a lot of minds about the sort of movies that could use electronic scores.
Leon and Brian Dewan are cousins and together they run Dewanatron, which makes a family of instruments like the Swarmatron, the Novitiate – a one-off they made for the Bob Moog Foundation. Their instruments are unique, expensive, beautiful and very unusual. In the video you see another of their machines, which has two keyboards that face each other so two people play it at the same time.
I also found some great footage of the Novitiate they made for the Bob Moog Foundation on the YouTube channel AutomaticGainsay, which is a great resource for synth reviews and videos. I've posted more videos of the Swarmatron, the Novitiate and other Dewanatron instruments on my YouTube and on the subscriber section of this channel.
The Dewans, whose family is originally from Syria, spoke to a Detroit Public TV show about Arab Americans."

Osmose synthesizer, Expressive E - Cello 'duocello' preset improvisation with onboard reverb
video upload by exploring-notes
"A quick improv with the Osmose preset - Duocello. I cranked the onboard reverb mix up to ~80%.
The initial key press technique of placing fingers into the centre of it's tone is something I've learnt (and still learning...) from playing the Osmose for a few hours now. The very gentle touches that can render sound are wonderful.
The audio dynamics range a lot, but hopefully YouTube won't compress too much.
Recorded directly into Logic using Behringer U-Phoria UMC1820. All effects and eq are onboard the Osmose itself.

Osmose synthesizer, Expressive E - familiarisation and exploration. Haken EaganMatrix strings.
video upload by exploring-notes
"The Osmose keyboard arrived today and I recorded an initial experimentation with a pad preset and bending of chords and notes. There was a three year wait while the keyboard was developed. Development history can be found here - https://expressivee.happyfox.com/kb/a...
00:00 Intro
00:38 Initial chords
02:05 Breakdown
02:34 Stacking chords
I've only played it for a couple of hours but already I can tell that playing the keyboard can be extremely nuanced. Flicking through the presets was more than just listening as I played... each preset asks to be pushed into, pushed sideways and explored.
Three parts only:
Pad - Osmose preset Hybrid Strings 2, recorded directly into Logic
Guitar - Fender SQ Contemporary Jaguar HH played through Chase Bliss Generation Loss Mk2 Lo-fi pedal
Drums - Logic drummer played through Devious Machines Infiltrator
Mastering preset added to the mix bus.
Music sketch: 'Sad interconnection'.
