resonant accordion - Baghead

"the resonant accordion sound is from a Prophet 2002 sampler, with a Wine Country purchased accordion sample run through the Prophet 2002 filters which are analog - hardly sounds like an accordion does it? The MP3 doesn't do the sound justice, there is a gorgeous chimey/ring quality to it live. The drums are a Korg ER-1 thru an Alesis Bitrman and that's about it, Ableton Live is the sequencer"

MAESTRO VINTAGE RUSSIAN SYNTH

images via this auction

"Maestro is the first russian synth with microprocessor inside. Maestro synthesizer was prodused on Kachkanar military radio plant on the same factory where well known Polivoks synth was prodused. Synth has nice compact design. There are 16 base waveforms onboard. Some waveforms feed to analog filter with resonanse. There is interesting arpeggiator also with memory of key's order and speed control. The synth is polyphonic, you can play 4 voices at one time. Than there is nice sounding rich chorus effect with mix/dry amount control. LFO can modulate pitch by triangle waveform. There is controls of modulation speed and amount of pitch modulation. There is nice funky 2-dimensional joystick for modulation
control."

Doepfer A-104 Trautonium Filter

via this auction

"A-104 is a fourfold formant filter as used in the Mixtur Trautonium by Oskar Sala. It is made of four parallel resonance filters, each filter can be switched to low pass or band pass or off. Frequency, resonance and level are controlled for each filter separately (no voltage control). The frequency range for the filters is about 50Hz...5kHz. The filter audio inputs are very sensitive so that distortion may intentionally be used to create new sounds - if desired. The A-104 is a versatile module for sound modification. In the first place it is used for reproduction of resonances (e.g. the vocal-like effects known from the Trautonium). In combination with the subharmonic generator A-113, the Trautonium Manual A-198 and some other A-100 modules one obtains a Trautonium replica."

The Roland S-50 on wire to the ear

"The Roland S-50 was a futuristic looking black metal monolith with a fluorescent screen. It felt long and had 61 keys. Compare that with the measly cheap feeling two octave Oxygen 8 I use now! You could hook it up to an external monitor. I had mine hooked up to a 13″ green CRT poised on a three tier Ultimate Keyboard Rack. It also came with a digitizing tablet and pen similar to a Wacom tablet. This allowed you to draw waveforms but it was more gimmick than useful.

It was 4 part multitimbral and 16 voice polyphonic. It had a 3.5″ disc drive and 750k internal memory. You could sample at 12-bit at 15-30kHz." Click here for the full post on the Roland S-50 on wire to the ear.

"Here is how an analog vocoder works. I am not going to use technical "jibberish" so I will speak normal vocabulary. This is the legendary EMS Vocoder 2000 (from 1977) which soundwise compares against Sennheiser, Moog(Bode), Synton, Roland, Korg. I will give a basic demonstration on how to use a vocoder and how a vocoder functions to give it that "robotic" sound. I used an Oberheim OB-8 Keyboard to trigger the pitch on the vocoder"

Smooth Electech - MC-909 LIVE (Part 6)

"Hi everyone,

Thanks a lot for continuing to watch and enjoy my videos on Youtube, brings a tear to my (incredibly manly) eye.

I don't really know what genre this track is - if anyone has any ideas then comment! It was made in 1 night, recorded the next night. Smooth, rolling, melodic, highly compressed, slightly French...I could go on...

For some reason, the sound quality is far worse on the upload than the recorded video - apologies for that. Kinda makes it sound quite bass-heavy...ach well!

If you have any comments or questions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again for watching...enjoy." Access Virus Classic.

Music & Recording - Digisound 80 Modular Synthesizer

"Somewhere in proffessor Elektrovolt's studio,in the vruchtenbuurt, the Hague we can find a huge, rare british modular synthesizer from the early 80s, the Digisound 80 modular. Invented and designed by Charles Blackley who would print the designs in the Electronics Today International and Electronics & Music Maker (E&MM) magazines. As obscure and extrentic as the EMS synthesizers the company from Blackpool faded away in the early 1990s."

MOOG Liberation Funds Syntar

images via this auction.
Here's an interesting auction. A MOOG Liberation being sold to fund a Syntar. Note the Syntar actually predated the MOOG Liberation as the first keytar ever, a interesting bit of synth history. The Syntar featured an amazingly expressive control interface on the neck that has yet to be reproduced and it did sound quite nice. You can read more about the Syntar on Carbon111's excellent Syntar Page as well as this interview here on MATRIXSYNTH.

It's worth noting that the person behind the Syntar was George Mattson who is currently the man behind the new Mattson Mini Modular.

As for this Liberation, here are the details from the auction:
"# This auction is only for a complete MOOG Liberation Analogue Synthesizer
# In good physical and playing condition with checking and dents in the wood
# Please click on the images below to see larger photos to inspect physical condition
# NEW chipforbrains slider caps
# NEW chipforbrains sliders installed by analogsynthservice.com
# Foam sheet over PCB has been removed and PCB has been cleaned!
# Rackmountable power/CV unit
# Control Cable has not nicks or cuts
# Hardshell carrying case
# Print outs of the owners and service manuals
# Shipping is $50 in the USA, $150 elsewhere
# Interested? All offers will be considered. The chipforbrains sliders are meant to be drop in replacements. However CY has stated that some Liberations will behave slightly differently in the Envelope Generators. If you're familiar with the Rogue or the Liberation, you will notice a difference in the behavior.

I am selling my Moog Liberation because I asked George Mattson to build me one of his unfinished SYNTARs that has sat idle nearly 30 years. As you can imagine it took quite a bit of money to convince him to dust off the SYNTAR and continue working on it. Subsequent interest in the SYNTAR has brought along his latest project: the Mattson Mini Modular .. I order two populated cabinets, so you can see, I need to LIBERATE myself of this Moog to pay Mr. Mattson."

MOOG Prodigy - Signed by Bob MOOG

images via this auction

Details (not me):
"I met Bob Moog in the winter of 1996 at the Zounds store in Chicago. He signed this synth for me. Bob was an amazing man. A humble man, A true scientist with a spiritual side that ran deep. There are those who would insist on a minimoog model D. But the prodigy is much more stable. This is my very first piece of gear. I learned about synthesis on this prodigy. This is truley my prized possesion. Flawless condition. Moog bass sounds that cannot be replicated anywhere."

Workspace and Environment: Deru on trash_audio

"What is your favorite piece of hardware?
I guess I have two favorites right now. One would be my Cwejman MKII analog synth. It sounds fantastic. It's got really quick envelopes and the oscillators sound dope. It's semi-modular so it allows for a lot of manipulation. I built a Max patch for it that does step and random sequencing. The combination of the precision from digital sequencing with the analog sound is tight. The other piece of gear that I love is my Avedis E27 eq's. They're 500 series so they fit in an API Lunchbox. They're the kind of eq's where anything you send threw them sounds better. I'm constantly on the search for gear like this. It's like magic. You can bypass them and send audio threw and it still sounds better. I want to find a compressor like this."

Tellun Doomsday Machine front

flickr by sduck409 (click for more including some of the inside).

"The TLN-712 Doomsday Machine is a voltage controlled waveform animator for modular synthesizers. Originally conceived as two separate modules, the TLN-712 comprises two different animation circuits and four voltage-controlled LFOs (low frequency oscillators). The first animator (Thalaran Radiation Emitter) is based on the Multi-Phase Waveform Animator by Bernie Hutchins. The second animator (Cascading Biogenic Pulse) is based on the Pulse Width Multiplier by Craig Anderton. Both animators have been combined into one module along with four LFOs to create a self contained system that makes optimal use of panel space. All you need to add is a single oscillator and a few patch cords to create a marvelous mayhem of sonic madness. Add a second oscillator and you'll never get a date to the prom."

Roland System 100, 101, & 102

images via this auction. via bryan.

It looks like the little piggy from this post is back.

"Roland System 100, including the 101 keyboard and the 102 expander in beautiful shape, the 102 even still has the protective plastic on the OSC knobs! The 102 unit is a 220v unit and a voltage transformer will be included in the sale. The only issue is the 102 expander mixer input jack does not seem to work, probably and easy fix, but I've just been using one of the checkpoints to patch the 101 into the 102 (for one convenient audio output for both) Also included will be photocopies of both manuals, and both patchsheet books and both service manuals. AND.. original patch cords that match the units (grey, red, and black: see pic)."

AnalogLive! Audio - The Secret Life of Semiconductors

"The Analoglive performance of The Secret Life of Semiconductors starts with Chas Smith fading in a high E maj triad his steel guitar using a small piece of glass to bow the strings in a sustinuto coloratura style which builds in intensity through the three massive E maj chords that follow. These first events give way to the start of the rhythmic stanza, which consists of the slow build of seven live voices from my synth (four of which were midi controlled and begin immediatly, and three others which fade in shortly afterward)."
