Formant (Part 1) on Synth.nl

Another project by Synth.nl
"I have been planning to build a Formant modular for a long time as well. I found all the documentation on the Internet and was already reading myself into this material. But I also saw that building these projects take a lot of time take keeps me from producing music. So I looked several times to buy a used set. But most of the times they just didn't fit my needs. Until very recently. I found a very nice set on a Dutch website. They guy that sells it even lived very close to me. At first I started bidding, but later I just mailed him what he asked for it and decided to go for it. I will pick it up on Monday if all goes well."
Note: Synth.nl also put up Part 5 of the ASM-2.

flight of harmony July newsletter

"Now that the madness of developing the Parasite is over, we can tell you about some new developments and upcoming offerings.

· Some of our behind-the-scenes business deals were finalized yesterday, enabling us to receive much better volume pricing on many components and services. Now we get to pass the savings on to you as well! For starters, the price of the Parasite is now just $185.00.

· A stash of the enclosures used to build both the Parasite and the Plague Bearer has been discovered! We are happy to announce a run of twenty v1.1 Plague Bearers, at $240 each. Version 1.1 has a few changes, mostly internal – PCB layout tweaks and Power Supply changes. The patch panel will be all 3.5mm jacks as well. The Parasite v1.0 run has been extended to 50.

Upcoming:
· Modular versions of the Plague Bearer, Parasite, and the Infernal Noise Machine are in development.

· The standalone version of the I.N.M and the Imp should be available soon, with custom wood enclosures, which leads us to:

· We have expanded our crony resource list to include a custom cabinetry manufacturer, and will be offering custom wood enclosures soon.

· And a few more things to be revealed in the future…

Oberheim Matrix-6

Thought this was an interesting shot via trash_audio's latest workspace post on "On Holiday."

"What are your current favorite pieces of hardware? ...I used to love my Oberheim Matrix 6 because it transports you to a magical place of cheesy 80s horror films, but Qrixs broke a bunch of the keys and it's been dropped a lot, so now it's starting to program its own not-good sounds. I'm pretty sure none of that is actually 'hardware,' but ah, well."

the grey knobs are available to tweek from inside one of the eight stored patches. the black ones only work in 'manual mode,' when you save a patch their settings are stored with the patch, when you call a patch they are disabled , kinda wierd but that's how it works"

I Eat Beats

I Eat Beats from Kyle McDonald on Vimeo.
"Skittle-based beat sequencer, a tangible and edible music interface. This is a prototype developed over the course of two evenings, with a webcam and Processing.

The webcam is mounted using cardboard/wood above the screen, and Skittles are placed on the screen -- a cheap responsive surface (when a circle is active, it turns green).

Future directions may include: more sensor types (e.g., a slider for tempo control), note-sequencing mode, and assigning the different colors to different rhythms or instruments (purple as bassline, or yellow as "every other measure").

There is a cut in the middle where it transitions from solo improvisation to three people interacting simultaneously. Any out-of-sync audio/video is due to my frazzled camera.

One of the other big problems: people like to eat Skittles." via AnalogSuicide

Tassman

via brian c:
"Tasssman is a sound construction set where you model sounds and then compile the instrument - its quite fun. Version 4 is latest rev. It can be standalone or a VST or Mac plugin. I got roped into it via an Ableton users discount of 45% - good thru July 31. I'm an easy mark for Abeton marketing I guess

The intriguing part to me was the physical modeling part, kind of like my old Technics WSA1 only better cause it is more expandable

Attached is a simple demo of one simple preset for a bass , it starts out with an ultra simple SCI TOM loop, then Tassman bass line and then joined by the old trusty DSI evolver - quick and fun

for more info on Tassman check out
http://www.applied-acoustics.com/tassman.htm
Plenty of better samples than mine there too.

'The Tassman is a tightly integrated environment comprising three interfaces: the Player, the Builder and the Browser. With the Tassman Player you are ready to play any of the synths included in the library. The automatically generated Player interface is inspired by classic analog hardware making it easy to tweak any of the existing factory presets to create and save your own custom sounds.'"

Synthorama - Entrance Room

This is the next post in a series featuring the Synthorama synthesizer museum in Luterbach Switzerland. See the Synthorama label below for prior posts.

The museum is organized into different themed rooms organized by manufacturer and/or region such as Russian synths. This will become more apparent as I begin to put up the themed flickr sets followed by the walk through videos of the museum.

For now you, click here to see a flickr set of what awaits you when you walk through the entrance of the museum.

As you enter, the Airböurne Synthesizer is directly across from you and to the right. Throughout the room are some synths waiting to be repaired and or on display. In one section of the room are a number of theremins. This is actually the theremin section of the museum.

There is an EMS Spectre Colour Video Synthesizer [pictured], a PPG Commander, PPG 380 Event Generator, Digilab [pictured], and more.

Through a window you can see the ARP room, all just a glimpse of what's about to follow.

Garfield Electronics Clock Delay

via this auction
"Description: The Clock Delay compensates rhythmic offsets caused by clock response time differences between various makers of sequencers, drum machines, arpeggiators and synthesizers. Each channel´s ROTARY control sets delay time in 2 milliseconds steps which are continuously variable with the FINE control.

To adjust the “feel” between two instruments of differing response times, clocks to the instrument with faster response are delayed to rhythmically align the audio output with that of the instrument with slower response time. In this way, the feel between the instruments can be made to “push”, “lay back” or be “on top of the beat” as desired.

CLICK, CLOCK and TRIGGER output types are produced with rising or falling edge polarity to meet the clocking requirements of all instruments. Use CLOCK output type when delaying sequencer or drum machine clocks, CLICK output type for delaying audio click tracks and TRIGGER output type for arpeggiators , individual drum trigger inputs or the synclavier.

Both channels produce 2 millisecond CLOCK output type when a plug is fully inserted to the input jack. When inserted half way, Channel A produces 10 millisecond TRIGGER output type, and Channel B produces 650 microsecond CLICK output type. Both channels produce rising edge output when a plug is inserted fully into the OUTPUT jack, or falling edge output if the plug is inserted half way. Most instrument clock inputs are rising edge. When in doubt, experiment.

To obtain longer delay times, the channels may be cascaded by connecting the output of either delay to the input of the other. This device will operate on AC power sources ranging from 100 to 250 Volts."

Vince Clarke Interview by Native Instruments

"You are famous as a user and collector of analog synthesizers, but computers made it into your setup list very early on as well. How would you describe the role of the computer in your creative work?
I started using computers around 1984. Prior to that I was using analog sequencers like the Roland MC-4, which is essentially a 4 Channel triggering device. I started to use computers with a software called UMI, which was made for the BBC Micro computer, a machine that was employed for basic education purposes in the U.K. The UMI software was a 16-channel MIDI sequencer that I used for years on the same computer. Even though technology went way ahead of me I stuck to the same piece of equipment. The reason for that was that its limitations really helped me to make the right decisions when it came down to making music. I couldn't get thrown over by having too many choices and that helped me focus on what was important in the song. When I moved to the U.S. I started using Logic and Max/MSP while I was waiting for all my equipment to arrive from the U.K. That's when I really got into software synthesizers. It was the first time I read a manual in my life. A rather difficult experience.

How did you come across Native Instruments?
That was by recommendation from Martin Ware of Heaven 17. We worked together and he recommended Absynth and FM7 to me. I loved Absynth right away because it was so different from anything else. Then I got into Reaktor through Gareth Jones, who was another producer I worked with. He explained to me how it worked. At first I was a bit put off by the idea of creating your own synthesizers. Initially, I couldn't be bothered to do that because it sounded like a lot of hard work. But I soon found out that it was also a lot of fun!"

Synthorama - Airböurne Synthesizer Videos

YouTube via matrixsynth.

As promised here are the Airböurne Synthesizer videos from my recent trip to Synthorama. Seven videos in total. The first video was literally the first video I took when entering the museum so I strayed just a bit, but I do quickly come back to the Airböurne. There is some discussion from Martin Hollinger, the creator of this modular and the curator of Synthorama. There is audio of the modular. Also note the huge white matrix sequencer on the floor to the left of the Airböurne. This is Martin's current project. Be sure to click on the Synthorama label below for more posts on the visit including more info on the Airböurne Synthesizer.

Mondo Modular Episode 6

YouTube via scootermccrae. You can find prior episodes here.
"A whole new set-up for the equipment and some esoteric additions to the line-up make for an episode in which audio aesthetics take a backseat to the simple reality of making sure everything is just plugged-in and working.

So this one is not as musically pleasing as some other episodes, but I hope you still find it interesting viewing nonetheless.

Even more equipment has arrived since this was recorded (gasp!) so the next installment should really be something...!

Thanks as always for your patience and interest!

P.S. I have tried posting replies to those nice enough to leave comments whenever I can, but more often than not they just don't register on the site so I've given up trying for now. My apologies as I'm not ignoring anybody or what they have to say."
